In part one I show you all the materials that you will need to build you cage trap and how to build the main cage. This is a great way to get into trapping without breaking the bank! About 45-55 dollars in materials and the most basic of welding skills, ( I learned to weld by making these cages) You will have an outstanding cage trap that you can start using to bring home fur! Or get rid of some nuisance animals around your house. Check out my trapping videos from this year to see these cages in action.

I join the corners the same way wire wrap and j clip, makes nice strong corners. I second the recycle sentiment, my first cages were framed with mud flap anti sail brackets off a big rig ( 3/16 round stock) now I get pieces of grid wall and break it down for the 1/4 round stock and build frames out of that
Thats awesome! I reuse whatever I can to cut cost. Just buit three more cages and made the doors with some 1/4inch round stock from.a trampoline net. Worked great! Thanks for watching!

I have changed up the way I attach the rails to the cage. I make a solid frame that I then attach to the wire. I am going to be building some more cages soon. So I will film that and add it to this play list.
Nice, same way my dad and I build cages, but we could not find anything for the rails/tracks for a guillotine door so we make swing down doors. I am interested to see how you split that tubing to make the track

Hey Mike where are you getting the 1x1x36in x 100' cage wire now I cant find it anywhere, Ace says they don't carry it any more I'm in Phoenix, thx.
Tractor Supply carries it. If you order a 100 foot roll they will deliver it to your house for free. I had to order it on line. But it was cheaper than ACE and free delivery.
Would 1x2" wire work ok? It's the only thing I can find locally.
Yes. I know a few guys who use it. I just like the 1x1 better. But the 1x2 will work fine.
When I cut my wire off the roll I cut every other piece of the wire on one side then I cut the other side so I have a one inch long wire to wrap around the corners of the cage every two inches. No J clips required. I make rabbit cages and I re-enforce around the door with wire from election signs. I am looking at making cage traps outt of powder coated wire closet shelving. I find lots of it in trash piles.

Would 16 guage wire be strong enough in a framed cage my idea is remaking the duke style trap but 20x20 inch for fox
I haven't tried the 16 gauge wire. However the animals are harder on a framed cage because it is not able to flex when they fight the cage.
@OutdoorMike do you think the 14 gauge wire would work well if it's 20x20 inch or does it need to be narrower to have the rigidity as all the traps iv seen on KZhead seem to be narrower than they are wide
What type of welding wire do you use…brand/ name…wire size….Do you use the same welding wire on all the metal cages that you build….. On that particular welder you’re using, what power setting do keep it on,…what wire feed setting do you use…. I’m still in the trial & screw-up stages. Thanks for all your videos.
The welding wire I use is Vulcan .035 Flux core welding wire. I buy it from Harbour Freight in 1 lbs rolls. My welder is just a 110 Chicago Electric also Harbour Freight. I have it on high and then I just tinker with the feed rate until I get a nice bead. I think it is usually round 4 or 5. I learned to weld building these caged so you may just have to play around with your setup to see what works best for you. Thanks for watching . Hope this helps.

I buy mine from Ace hardware. Also called True Value. If they don't have it on hand they can order a 100 foot roll for the store and you can buy it from them by the liner foot. The 36" wide roll is 2.99 a liner foot from ACE.

What made you go with 9 inches wide ?
I build a few different sizes so I can store cages inside each other. So the wire I had allowed me to build 2 10inch wides on 9 wide and one 7 wide. Thanks for watching. Hope the videos help.
Hi Mike I am building cages , I have 14 ga wire. Is that ok , insted of 16 ga. My neighbor had a 25 foot roll he gave me.
14 ga is the size I use for my cages.

What are the demission's of the formed steel?
It's 1x1 formed steel. Then after I make the cage portion I cut the steel to best fit in the front of the cage.

Yes. 1/8" cold rolled. I buy it in long sections, and it looks just like a long wire. So I kept calling it that.

Probably not. These cages get a lot of abuse from the animal you catch. 16 gauge may not hold up.
