Welcome to this week's Tribe Tutorial, we are now getting into the nitty gritty part of becoming a kitesurfer, the board starts. At this stage in your kitesurfing career you're looking to ensure that you're going out at the perfect time to enhance your learning experience. You should be looking for flat water, suitable wind conditions and the right size equipment. Board wise you should be looking at a high volume board or generally a longer board when you're talking about twin tips.
This part of learning to kitesurf can be frustrating if you have never done board sports before. My immediate advice is take your time, make sure you are completely comfortable with flying and managing the kite. If your kite skills are poor, progress on the board will be slow. You're almost there so good luck and enjoy the ride!
Tribe Watersports is a kitesurfing school that operates in Watamu, Kenya. We are always happy to walk you through the different riding spots and provide you with all the information you need to ensure your time in Watamu is not only great fun but also safe.
Our Tribe Tutorials are intended to be an add-on to your Kitesurfing lessons, these videos are to be used as reminders and or a review to your actual kitesurfing lessons. Maaate that was briliant video, you are defo great instructor, i might start looking for 2nd hand gear and teach myself with your videos❤
This was a great video compared to others. Keeping tension steady is something I missed in individual lessons and other videos. Thanks
Glad this has helped! Good luck.
this was a awesome tip i agree. great video
@@kevmn glad to have helped, we have also started pushing out tutorials on our Instagram page as well. Feel free to check those out anytime.
I usually take a leak in the water when I'm standing like that legs are relaxed. good instructional mate!
Brilliant video pal
I think the hip trick is so important I’m gonna try it again and come back for an update 🤙🏼
Thank you maestro!
Your explanations are great. You would be great to learn with!!!!!
That's very kind feedback, thank you.
Fantastic you made look so easy thank you so much
Love how relaxed you look. This is probably the most helpful point of all - it is not some kind of strength contest to get up.
Yeah for sure it's so important not to fight it!
Very well explained-thank you and keep it coming 🤩
Thank you! Will do!
Great Video - Thanks!!!!
Thank you, glad we were able to help. Im always happy to answer any questions you might have so fire them over.
Great instruction
Great video, thanks Ben
Thanks Steve glad to have helped, good luck with your progression and check back in the near future for more videos
Very helpful to me, Thank You 😍
Glad to have helped, good luck with your progress!
Timely and clear tips for a guy just starting his 2nd day of waterstarts in windy corralejo. Excellent tutorial
Glad to here that this was helpful, good luck with your progression .
Not a great beach to learn on with the sharp rocks!
@SoSoSo you must be mistaken. Our teaching zone is completely clear of sharp rocks. There are other locations in Watamu that do have rocky areas, but we do not run any form of lessons in these areas for obvious reasons.
@@Tribe-watersports I mean Corralejo / Flag beach where the original poster was on about. Your spot looks great.
@@huzcer ah I see, my misunderstanding. Apologies
Nice pointer to start bringing the kite up ASAP!
This really makes a big difference at the beginning! Glad it's helping.
Excelente excellent video the best I ever seen so many fine points they had been explained. Kudos for You , Great Instructor !!!!
The condition looks amazing
They really are!
Cool. Never did this. But i think my skate board and snowboard experience matters!
It will help alot. Snow boarders tend to apply a little too much front foot pressure when starting and nose dive the board. That said any board awareness is useful, as at this stage you will find that alot of your focus will still need to be on the kite.
Really outstanding video. You explain important points for a beginner to utilize. Thinking back to issues I have dealt with, failing to keep tension on the kite when I start to sit down, putting both feet up and into the straps, at the same time, bringing the kite back up quickly and turning your hips downwind all have corrected problems I have had in waterstarts. Please continue instructions for moving forward.
Thank you for your kind words. I am planning to do some more videos in the near future.
Never done it but I feel I can do it now lol! I do have kiting, jumping with kites as a kid, and a lot of water sport experience (sailing, surfing).
We would still recommend getting lessons for the finer details. The best thing I would advise is book some private tuition so the school can cater to your existing skills and fast track you through the bits you pick up quickly.
@@Tribe-watersports ha yes sure, thanks! I would not dare to try it without lessons. These are powerful kites and I know the dangers of water, wind and current. Just a compliment for how clear the explanation is!
@@harry356 Sweet man, good luck with it !
did was amzing
very very nice video bro
Thanks Dennis, Appreciate the feedback.
Really good explained video. My main trouble is when (quite always) the sea is not as nice and flat as in your video. What to do when you you are in such a condition? Usually when I'm ready to send down the kite arrives a wave that modify my position... Thank you
Thanks for your comment. Yes, the conditions you learn in really make a big difference to your rate of progress. That's why we see people progressing so quickly here in Watamu as the conditions are perfect for learning. A few things to make life easier for you. First try position the board into the oncoming surf so it stops you from spinning around when it knocks you, then quickly shift into the correct position once you have a break in the chop/waves and go. Number 2 in wavey conditions try and keep more weight through (but not over) the back leg to keep the nose of the board up out the surf. Number 3 use a board with more rocker in the nose to assist with the issues your trying to tackle in point number 2. Hope this helps! Good luck with your progress.
amazing video ! where is this spot ? looks perfect
We are based in Watamu in Kenya. It's amazing for kitesurfing and all Watersports for that matter.
Thank you 🙏🏻 going to try today.
Awesome 🤙 let us know how you get on!
Great video & Common sense approach! Any tips for getting your board on in waves 🌊 & surf?
Thank you, in short get it on quickly 😂 In addition angle the board so it's perpendicular to the breaking waves as your waiting in the water and keep the kite on the same side so it's pulling you towards them slowly. This will stop you from spinning around or getting knocked around by the waves as soon as there is a break or calm section in the waves the straighten up and go for it. That all said, the best option above all of this is to body drag through the waves untill it's just rolling swell and then go for it from there.
@@Tribe-watersports Thanks for your speedy reply, & excellent tips! Makes sense to angle perpendicular to 🌊. Angling kite 🪁 will also help b/c less tendency to swirl/spin when there’s tension holding you.
@@drbfitk366 exactly, glad to have helped. Good luck with you progression 🤙
thanks alot
Tha k you glad you like the video
Very good tutorial I am going out recently and trying to get this mastered, I am finding that my non natural stance feels easier than my natural direction to get going so I find I am way more confident in going one way. Is this normal ? Any tips?
Thank you, strange that your natural stance feels harder. Are you usually goofy (left foot back) or regular (right foot back) when doing other board sports? What other board sport do you usually do. The straight answer is you just got to practise, that's one of the things about kitesurfing is you have to use both stances. The benefit being that it will make you better riding switch when you do go back to other board sports.
@@Tribe-watersports Thanks for that I am a goofy stance at other board sports.
@@wilsongardner1376 so you are finding going to the right easier?
@@Tribe-watersports yes for some reason I can get the board in that more down position easier going right!! When I then head left I just feel al out of balance I’m heading out Thursday for a session so will try and self learn what I’m doing wrong.
@wilsongardner1376 Good luck on Thursday, let us know how you get on.

I’ve seen a lot of board start vids on KZhead. Your explanation is really great!! Especially about the hip placement. I’m new to the sport and still learning and find this explanation very helpful. Thanks, will keep an eye out for more vids fm you.✌️✌️✌️👍👍👍
Really good video ! I’m searching for info on kite surfing, before I start taking lessons. Maybe you can help, is there anyway I can strap my right leg maybe with a boot or smth, because I’m amputee so I got a prosthesis, and I’m kinda afraid that my foot slip of the board. Thank’s for your advice mate
Hey Man, great to hear that your looking at getting into kiting. I have actually taught a guy with a prosthetic leg before. Is it the whole leg or from below the knee?
@@Tribe-watersports it’s below the knee actually so it will be easier for the board I guess just like snowboarding and skate
@@Dylangsn yes exactly, I would say stay away from the boots and stick to the straps you do want the board to come off rather than one leg being left strapped in and the other coming out. Check out an Instagram account from a lady called @la_fran_kite she is in a similar situation to you and may have some more detailed advice for. I wish you the best of luck and look forward to seeing pictures of you shredding in the future.
@@Tribe-watersports thank’s a lot you are the best !

it is amazing he could stand up by the help of wind.. and then, fly like a bird
What Slingshot model is this board ?
I'm beginning my 2nd season of trying to teach myself because there is no training available around my area. I went out probably 6 times last summer. Flew the kite several times in grassy fields at home. I made the mistake in the beginning of buying a 134cm board. I bought a 146 and it helped but I cannot seem to get continuous power to stay on top of the water. I notice you are really aggressive on moving the kite up and down at the start. I haven't figured out how far you go while doing this. I just want to ride away and go once I get up but the kite just won't pull me! (I'm 175 lbs) I started with a 12 but have a 14 now so I can go in less wind. I can wake board and slalom water ski behind a boat.. Maybe I just need more wind.. Im just afraid of getting drug across the lake by this huge kite lol
Although I would always recommend getting some lessons, the key thing if you are going to teach yourself is make sure that you are going to be safe. This is where our site assesment video will come in handy kzhead.info/sun/dd6BeMqpZ4WDeX0/bejne.html Its really difficult to advise on the problems you are having without seeing what it is that you are doing. In addition to this, wind strength is an important aspect as well, do you know how windy it is when you ahve been trying. Do you have any background in other wind based sports? My honest advice is take a holiday to somewhere you can get some advice and in person training, its going to take a long time to "work it out" by guessing what it is that you are doing wrong. Once you have the knowledge base to get going the rest is just practise, and your going to achieve this much quicker by having some lessons.
Twice you said flag the board Of course I flag my kite when I need to on the water but I've never heard the term flag the board can you explain that for me
Shit is so cool man
One moment the weight should be always centred on the board, the next it should be 30/70%. Which one is it?
The pressure applied through your feet, should be split 70-30. However it's important to keep your head over the center of the board. A classic mistake is that beginners will lean their whole body over the back of the board with thier entire body pushing the whole back end of the board too far into the water. This then creates too much resistance and the board ploughs through the water rather than gliding over the surface. Hope this clarifies it for you.
