Quando dico al qualcuno che studio l’italiano quasi sempre mi viene chiesto “perche l’italiano? servirebbe molto di piu lo spagnolo no?” e io rispondo “perche l’ho dovuto imparare a scuola e percio lo odiavo profundamente ma l’italiano era scelto da me per piacere” ed eccomi qui. Se l’inglese è un dovere per scuola probabilmente non porta molto voglia di impararlo fuori dalla scuola.
Qualcuno che ha centrato il punto finalmente... Personalmente il continuo obbligo che ho avuto fin dalle scuole elementari di impararlo mi ha portato ad una sorta di nausea verso di essa. Di fatto ho un inglese completamente basilare e non sono interessato a migliorarlo. Al contrario parlo con estrema facilità il giapponese. Lingua che ho scelto per passione personale verso la cultura nipponica e non perché mi è stata imposta di impararla.
Esatto.. come insegnante di inglese in Italia non posso che essere d'accordo. Per questo cerco di trovare sempre qualcosa che interessi i miei alunni: guardare un quarto d'ora di commenti alla Champions League con i miei alunni ogni lunedì mattina è stato spesso di grande aiuto con i miei studenti maschi... normalmente i più ostici.
@@cambiare_idea5374 Non diciamo sciocchezze dai, il problema piuttosto è un altro: se si esce fuori da certi contesti come quello delle grandi cittadine molto turistiche o di interesse commerciale con l'estero, le occasioni per utilizzare quell'inglese saranno pari a zero. Si può usare online, certo, ma finisce lì specialmente per quanto riguarda la pronuncia (che è il punto centrale), che si andrà anche perdendo pur avendola studiata bene a scuola. Poi c'è il fatto che si pretende un inglese perfetto, spessissimo gli itagliani caproni esterofili (o meglio, succubi statunitensi direi) mettono pressione, fanno vergognare, pretendono che non si doppino film e serie tv perchè "ecco perchè gli italiani non sanno l'inglese" mentre "loro" sì che lo san bene ed infatti guardano tutto in originale; si fanno le pressioni perchè "hehehe quel politico che ha parlato inglese, che pronuncia" e quindi la popolazione è ancor più restia e spaventata di parlare inglese col turista che chiede informazioni.
@@mimmiblu6138 Ripensando oggi al mio percorso da studente di inglese, dalle elementari fino al liceo, trovo quasi assurdo che tutti i miei insegnanti e professori abbiano dato così poca importanza alla "listening and comprention" della lingua parlata😅 ascoltare una volta alla settimana il CD allegato al libro di Inglese, con attori che parlano lentamente e senza alcun accento o inflessione, non mi é servito a molto😅... Non riuscire a capire la lingua parlata ed avere un vocabolario limitato che mi impediva una lettura fluida mi infastidiva. Ho deciso di fare un piccolo sforzo e ascoltare il più possibile contenuti in inglese con sottotitoli in inglese. Le piccole soddisfazioni nel capire sempre un po' meglio cose come accenti, giochi di parole, comicità etc mi hanno fatto perseverare.
Same. For me it was my parents forcing me to learn French. Sure, French is probably more useful, but the lack of choice meant I had no motivation.
I found once I started learning Italian, the "broken" English Italians speak made more sense. Their mistakes are direct translations of Italian which aren't correct in English. My cousin once asked me "What do I make?" when he wanted to know what my job was, because fare could be to make or to do. (For the record, he makes guitars as a profession, which makes soooo much cooler than his cousin who makes powerpoint presentations.)

Yes, my fiance is always putting an or before the first thing if he is saying "this or that" which I quickly realized was the Italian way of saying it "o questo o quello".
In German we use also "make" (machen) for "to make" AND "to do". It's very interesting because usually German is closer to English than to Italian 😮

Well in fact everyone does it at least when they are not proficient users: you use your native grammar and semantics to speak other languages. I've certainly done that with every language I've learned.
I worked in Italy for 16 months in my late fifties. I had no knowlege of Italian and struggled with translator apps. In time, I learned the basics of the language structure. The hard part was sometimes there seems to be ten different words to get the same point across i.e., masculine, feminine, formal, informal.. Also the adjectives coming after the noun. Seemed complex compared to English. I picked up the basics from my "foreign" friends like Polish, Romanians and Georgians. They seemed to have a knack for keeping it simple. Most Italians over 30-40 did not know or struggled with English. If I needed to know something I'd look around for a teenager. Many were fluent in English.
I would like to add that Italians were very gracious and helpful despite my poor language skills
Would you say that your more fluent now by working there for 16 months? Do you still try to speak it?
@@claudias6924 Yes, I try to add to what I know. At one point in Italy I was able to communicate without translating in my head. It's been five years since I left. I will return one day. Unfortunately I live in South Carolina, Italians are scarce here so I don't get to practice.
Yeah I mean if you ever look at a sentence in an instruction manual, the sentence in Italian, Spanish or Portuguese always have more words in them.
@@nicholascaruso428 If you happen to live close to a university, you might find a few Italian students or teachers there, in many different subjects, from physics to medicine.
The reason why people from Nordic countries and Germans speak English better is mainly because English is basically a Germanic language with most of its vocabulary derived from German (and the rest from Latin). So, it's completely okay for Romance language speakers to not have the fluency.
But most Italians also can't speak French.

@@JohnDoe-vx3z They mightn't speak it, but it's not that hard to understand. I've never studied French in my whole life, but I can understand a lot of things the native speakers are saying
it's more cultural... finns for example also usually speak great english despite it being unrelated to finnish. French on the other hand shares much more vocabulary with english than most languages but there is not such a culture of learning and using english in france
@@tressel2489 Yeah, but it's mainly because it's easier for those who speak a Germanic language to speak English than for all the other ones. Spanish and Italian share lots of words and have similiar sounds. So it's easier for me to learn Spanish than German, for ex. On the other hand, a German person would find it far easier to learn English than Spanish or Italian.
Quando vado in Italia, vorrei parlare Italiano, non Inglese. 🙂I realize English is a global language, but sometimes wish it wasn't. We native English speakers should work a little harder to communicate in non-English speaking countries!

@@daleerwin7554 That’s so frustrating!! I’m really fluent in French, and one of the main reasons I moved there was to get a chance to speak the language! But I would encounter people on a regular basis, (both French and non), who would immediately switch to English, the minute they surmised I wasn’t French! (for the record, my accent is very good, but not perfect). It made me feel like they were just assuming I must be bad at French, without even giving me a chance to show my level of fluency!! 😤 And speaking is the best way to learn!

As a fellow Brit and Northern lass, I agree completely with you about the imperial leftovers and arrogant attitude that English should be spoken everywhere. It's incredibly rude, I believe, to go to a country without the good manners and respect to at least try to learn the basics in the local language. Not only that, but it depletes our lives of so much joy and connection. In my experience, if you show this respect in most countries you stop being a tourist and become almost family. It builds unity and honours diversity. I am a proud European, I think we enjoy everything more anywhere with the effort of respectful friendship.
English is not my native. But choosing one of the most popular language and make it known worldwide is a generally good idea, because it saves HUGE amount of time for the whole world and simplifies international business. Nothing to do with respect etc
Easier said than done! You could try all your hardest to adapt to a new language and still be treated like dirt by locals. Learning a new language, yet culture is not something you learn in one night. And that is something one knows when they left their country and lived outside the border. It's important to have at least one universal language to communicate around the globe. However I can see your point of not keeping the perspective as a tourist or the cons of making english seem like it's mandatory.
@@thegreennoise533 it depends on time and motivation, I am currently learning Spanish, Italian and French in determination to get up, walking and travelling our beautiful Earth. I am also learning different birdsongs, too, it is an amazing experience with the added bonus of keeping the neighbours who nick our food at bay from 'the crazy bird lady'. 🤣 I'm joking, that's why we're growing it, if it's there we share.
English is the chosen one even because it is the easiest to learn. Imagine learning chinese: you would have to study the alphabet first, which is a nightmare, then in order to master it you should go in china which is really far away from us
@@metalfingerz4203yes, you're right, our schools teach Mandarin Chinese, here, now. It's daunting to say the least. There's a guy on here who knows it well, he loves going into Chinese places, listening to what they say and answering them in their own dialect, it's hilarious, they love it.
Questo è stato molto interessante. Sono madrelingua inglese. Riesco a leggere abbastanza bene l'italiano. Riesco a scrivere in italiano, se guardo le cose. Sono molto nervoso all'idea di parlare. Nelle mie lezioni di italiano non parliamo abbastanza. Molti americani sono molto poveri nell'apprendimento di altre lingue. Troppi americani si aspettano che tutti gli altri parlano inglese. Apprezzo i commenti di Katie sulle persone che non si vergognano di non parlare bene un'altra lingua.

@@claudias6924 no. The US is a country made up of many many many different immigrants from many different cultures, to generalize everyone and lump all the degenerates into one group is just wrong. Americans are white, black, Hispanic, Indian, Asian, pacific islander, all cultures with many different languages and upbringing. There are ignorant people in every country.
it seems that Italians speaking English have the same concerns as us English speakers using Italian. I am always scared of making grammatical mistakes and also using the wrong word for something.
Making mistakes is a good thing, from them you will learn how to speak better. I am an italian native speaker, english is my secondary language and when I first approached to it as a kid a used to make HUGE grammatical mistakes, but from them I became better through the years and I am aware I still have alot to learn. Do not be afraid to make mistake.

Durante il mio primo viaggio in Italia (ero in Campania), mi sono reso conto che gli Italiani non parlavanno meglio inglese degli Francesi 😅😅😅. Ecco perché ho deciso ad imparare italiano, non solo perché mi piace questa lingua ma anche perché era una necessità par discutare con i abitanti. E adesso, ho smesso di parlare inglese con gli Italiani : cerco sempre di parlare in italiano anche se il mio livello è semplice
I´m brazilian and everytime I visited Italy, I tried to speak in italian with the locals, at least in basic italian like asking for information, food, greeting people and so on. I think that one of the best way to conquer one´s heart is by learning the basic of the language.

Dalla mia esperienza personale, tutte le volte in cui ho girato l'Italia (sono italo-argentino), ho notato che gli italiani si sentono più al loro agio quando parlano in spagnolo. Infatti, lo imparano velocemente, senza ulteriori difficoltà. Oltre alla familiarità (radici latine) che esiste tra entrambe le lingue 🇪🇸🇮🇹, ho notato che l'idea di farsi una vacanza in Spagna o girare il Sud America o anzi, l'America Latina ('la ruta del Che Guevara' hahahah) per 3-12 mesi, rende lo spagnolo una lingua molto interessante per gli "italianos/italianas" Vi amo, italianissss! ☺🥰😘
I'm Indonesian, I speak english well, I learn italian just because I'm a Juventino 😆 Italian and romance languages are quite easy to learnt because of the similarity of the sentence structures to Indonesian language, the problem is it does not recognize masculine, feminine, singular, and plural nouns

These videos are great. My Italian has improved so much more with just daily listening. Also, a big thank you to the Italian ladies! On average they speak slower and much clearer. Much easier for my English male brain to process....
Sono d'accordo con Katie! Inglese è molto utile per lavoro (sopratutto lavoro internazionale), ma non c'è vergogna di non parlare. L'italiano è bellissimo e non vogliamo una situazione dove si scompa! Sembra anche che molti turisti desiderano che ogni persona parla perfettamante l'inglese, al stesso tempo che non provano imparare una parola d'italiano. Non è rispettoso! Se si trova in Italia, faccia una prova di parlare un po' della lingua locale 😎
Love these videos. I was quite adept at speaking Italian when I was living there but haven't had a chance to practice since I've moved. Watching these vids with both sets of subtitles is great for my brain to keep some of what I had.

I'm willing to bet a lot of Italians are better at English than I am at Italian. I recently started learning it again and it's been tough. It makes me much more understanding of what English language learners are going through. I'm having a lot of trouble with word order, sometimes it's familiar but then others it's what I would think of as backwards and I can never tell when it is supposed to be one way or the other. I'm also struggling with the concept of the formal you.

I agree with the young man with the teal coloured T shirt. For the most part, in Italy there’s a tendency to focus on grammar a little too much; well, at least in the past. Conversation rules when it comes to everyday living I think. My dad learned English from an Italian teacher based in London, but when we came to Australia, the general speech was entirely different. Much more relaxed and “ lazy”. It was an experience😂
English is not the only foreign language we ought to study. The thing is people should learn languages, not just English.
As the accepted international language, English is the most important, or the one that will come in most handy, for most people. That said, my opinion is the more you can learn, the better! 😁

This video is the first time I ever heard Katie speak an entire sentence in English! (As for me speaking Italian, I have nobody to practice with in the far north where I live.)
I am just completing my fourth semester of German, and I must say that I really have to think before I speak because it is not a romance language. Though I took four semesters of Italian four and five years ago, I am rather comfortable speaking since it is similar to French and Spanish, and therefore, the vocabulary isn't difficult to remember. To get better at speaking, one must speak it. I have resigned myself to accepting that my spoken German will never improve unless I hear and speak it more, but at 65 years of age, I guess I should focus more on those languages that I am more motivated to speak.
You could look for an online conversation partner
Huge props to you for learning new things at 65. You're an inspiration. If it's such a trouble to find some partners as is often the case for many learners not living in the country of the language, you could instead try speaking to yourself or reading texts out loud or listening to German videos and movies and repeating the phrases word by word in their accent and intonation. Progress may be slower as opposed to with a language partner but you'll get there, just trust the process and make your mouth, tongue and throat get used to the sounds of the language! Keep learning. :)
Penso che la maggior parte degli italiani parlano un inglese molto bene, Ho lavorato assieme con infermieri italiani in ospedale in Cambridge e secondo me parlano un inglese a livello alto. Quando mi hanno sentito parlare italiano erano molti contenti e nella loro compagnia non mi permettevano di parlare in inglese ! Adesso pratico il mio italiano con amici di ' Conversation Exchance ' e li aiuto perfezionare le loro competenze inglese.
As an italian I have to say that we study more grammar for real, in my career as student I only had 1 teacher that wanted us to speak, we used to do a lot of conversation and I think it's thanks to her if im more confident also the only teacher who gave me a row of 9 lol anyway, we should have more practice in the speaking instead of reviewing present perfect once again, I think I have learnt more by using KZhead than school so this is a negative thing as school focuses only with grammar and some random poet, practice makes perfect.

Well, I believe that younger people on average are pretty good but I think that we should get more certifications even with the PON activities as school with mother tongue teacher to prepare for the PET/FIRST etc. I've always been a good student in all subjects at school but English was a bit of a problem until I attended the course, hearing a mother tongue speaking for hours, trying to intervene and even chatting with them during the break (they used to stay in class) helped me a lot in all fields of the language. Then I started watching videos upon videos on KZhead in English, setting the videogames language to English (both to improve myself but also to experience the game as the developers intended it). So... I think teachers should encourage students more to take the courses and then, after the practice, they'll find their way to always better themselves
For me who is learning Italian, being a French mother tongue and perfectly fluent in English, one of the difficulties is when I try to find the right word or the right expression in Italian, often comes to mind those in English and it becomes quite difficult to reposition myself and my mind to speak and think of Italian. I don't know if it's a phenomenon that happens to bilingual people like me and who are learning Italian, but it's a particular phenomenon, let's say. Still, Italian grammar is very similar, at least in some of its rules, to that of the French, which somewhat facilitates our learning of Dante's language.
I signed up a couple of weeks ago and am I enjoying it. I hope to know enough for when I am in Florence, in July. It is a beautiful language.
Try to listen to De Andrè and Battiato to improve your vocabulary
Quest’anno sono trascorso qualche giorno con gli Italiani e posso dire che sono molto soddisfatto 😍 Alcune volte mi sento come un italiano vero e ho avuto molta fiducia in me stesso… ogni volta invece di parlare inglese in Italia, mi sono costretto a parlare italiano, anche se so che non era 100 % corretto :)

Io ricordo la mia prima impressione in Italia era che tutte le persone erano molte pazienti con me. Ho passato una settimana nel sud della Francia prima di arrivare a Ventimiglia, e, benché avevo un livello più avanzato nel francese, un B2, ogni volta che ordinavo un caffè, le persone mi rispondevano in inglese. Non era una cosa fastidiosa. È possibile che riconoscere il mio accento e rispondere in inglese sia visto come una forma di servizio? Può essere una tolleranza più bassa di ascoltare un accento straniero con il francese. Chissà? Ma, in Italia, riuscivo a praticare il mio italiano senza la necessità di chiedere direttamente parlare in italiano invece del inglese come in Francia. Questo mi incoraggiava e mi dava più motivazione di continuare i miei sforzi. Forse è una combinazione di pazienza e disagio con il inglese? Io non so. Il risultato è un buon ambiente per parlare il italiano.

I am still learning Italian but I feel that I can understand a lot of it when I read it or hear it (as long as it’s not spoken super fast! Lol). Speaking it is completely different because I don’t know if I am using the right words or tense. Also, the sentence structure which is different in English and in Italian. Also, someone of the video mentioned that you can tell when an Italian is speaking English which is true but that’s because Italian is a rhythmic language (like Spanish) while English is not. So applying the same rhythmic structure to English makes it obvious that the person speaking is not a native speaker. The opposite is also true.

I had a Brazilian friend who was fluent in French. But listening to her speak, if you didn’t focus on the words, you would swear she was speaking Brazilian!! (I know the language is Portuguese, but the Brazilians speak it way different than the Portuguese, so I’m just acknowledging that difference). Because her tone was SO Brazilian! 😂
In Germania lo parlano bene le persone sotto i 25, fine anni 90 erano i più scarsi fra i nordeuroepi
beh, il mio problema è l'ordine delle frasi in italiano. in tedesco (sono austriaca) l'ordine delle frasi è molto rigido, in italiano è tutto molto fluido, il che a volte mi fa uscire completamente dal concetto quando parlo😂 also I can confirm that austrian, german, scandinavian, Dutch etc people are mainly brought up bilingual with English as the second language following Latin, French and Italian as a third/fourth language. The school's here are pretty demanding. I actually like that the Italians value their language a lot :) it just takes time for me to think in Italian and not Austrian😂

In countries where they don't use dubbing in movies or TV...instead they use subtitles is a huge reason for learning a new language.
9:35 L'impero britannico è vero che ha fatto la sua parte nel diffondere la lingua, ma penso che gli americani siano i responsabili per l'attuale diffusione dell'inglese. I film più famosi provengono da Hollywood, molta (ma non tutta) della musica più famosa è americana, ed in generale l'influenza culturale degli Stati Uniti è fortissima.

@@LittleLulubee It true dawg, that just how I be speaking right now bruh. Most Americans don't use the verb To Be when speaking this form of English or they don't conjugate it or do it in a strange way.

As an American living in Italy I find that many Italians are surprised to find out I speak Spanish. They think all Americans are cowboys... heck in GardaLand they have a whole American section where is nothing but cowboys and Indians. The Wild West chain of restaurants is a bit racist and come one the only thing they know about American food is McDonald's and Burger King which are everywhere. We're not all the same. So anyhow that out of the way as an English speaker and a Spanish speaker it was very easy for me to learn Italian. I love the culture the people th3 language the food everything about Italy but there are many misconceptions about 🇺🇸 that I've read on this page just want to point it out. Same here, I’m an American who’s fluent in Spanish (and French). I was shocked when I lived in Paris HOW IGNORANT so many Europeans are about Americans and the US (not just French people, there were people from all over Europe there). And more often than not, it’s not just sincere, innocent ignorance- it’s downright blatantly and purposefully insulting! So many of them are SO arrogant (thinking they’re SO superior to Americans in every way, LMAO), and believe they’re SO knowledgeable about everything (including about Americans and our country)… yet that couldn’t be further from the truth!! (for a shockingly large number). Such cognitive dissonance!! Thank you for speaking up about it! 👍 God bless America ❤🇺🇸😁
What I also find hilarious is how they always criticize Americans for McDonald’s, claiming that’s all we eat, and they would never touch it… Yet when you travel around Europe, there are crowded McDonald’s EVERYWHERE, filled with EUROPEANS 😂🤣🤣

Mind you these fast food restaurants out here are way fancier than at back home. (They have servers, or at least people that bring you your food here like an actual restaurant) but yea they're always packed. I guess is their idea of "foreign food"? But man how I wish they could have an actual American restaurant that sold the best of everything from back home: Brisket, Ribs, Steak, Jumbolaya, just soul food in general, tacos, American style pizza, Chinese (American style), Indian, Thai, Vietnamese, the point I'm trying to make here is that an actual American restaurant would have all the food from all the world because that's who we are.
Beyond someone's ignorance many Italians were passionate about the Far West. One of the most popular Italian comics is "Tex Willer". Sergio Leone made the famous Spaghetti Westerns. And then there are all the mythical western parodies with Bud Spencer and Terence Hill.
Americans have a lot of misconceptions about Italians as well. They say we belong to mafia, they start moving their hands and talking like idiots when we tell them we are Italian. Many Italian exchange students were asked if in Italy we had phones, cars or TVs. And they think Sicily is a country separated from Italy. They think we eat just pizza and pasta and that we are inferior to white Americans because they say we are North Africans or Middle Eastern since some Italians have tanned skin. I have argued with many Americans many times about these topics and now I don't have a really nice opinion on Americans. Too obsessed with this damn word "race" and they always try to put people in boxes.

That’s because English is the international language. So non-English speakers have good reason to want or need it, whereas native English speakers don’t. It’s logical.

I'd say the very touristy parts of Italy there would be quite alot of English speakers. Rome, Venice, Milan etc because there's a good chance you will run into quite alot of travellers on holidays and you would need to use it to assist people with directions or even interact with them in a social setting.

L'ultima volta che sono stato in Italia (2019) imparavo l'italiano da poco più di un anno. Nel centro di Roma tutti sembravano parlare inglese meglio di quanto parlassi italiano. Poi una sera io e mia moglie abbiamo preso un autobus per il centro commerciale Porta di Roma per comprare dei vestiti. Non ricordo di aver trovato nessuno che parlasse inglese, quindi l'intera esperienza è diventata un'avventura linguistica. Una cosa divertente è successa quando abbiamo preso un taxi per tornare a Trevi, però. L'inglese dell'autista era più o meno lo stesso del mio italiano. Sono andato per sicurezza e ho parlato di musica. Quando ho detto che il mio cantautore italiano preferito era Lucio Battisti ha affermato di essere un nipote. La cosa divertente è che mentre si parlava di Battisti è arrivata in radio una sua canzone. Abbiamo solo riso e riso. Quella notte mi diede la speranza che un giorno chiamerò italiano la mia seconda lingua.
I lived in Florence for a semester (from New York) and I found Italian to be extremely difficult to speak since the structure of English versus Italian is so different. "Andiamo a scoprirlo" is a good example because in "let's find out," there is no pronoun but isn't the "lo" at the end of "scoprirlo" an added pronoun? This is one of my biggest struggles. I've been lightly studying Italian since I left Florence a decade ago, but in the U.S., there really isn't any place to practice speaking.
Understandable. But this could also be translated as “let’s go to discover it”. Word for word translations, though aren’t always helpful. But they certainly can be! Keep reading a ton and listening a ton. Good luck on your language learning endeavors!

Purtroppo la conoscenza della lingua inglese in italia è dettata molto anche dalla posizione geografica. Nel nord italia hanno una conoscenza decisamente maggiore della lingua, non mi sorprenderebbe se, la maggior parte dei giovani che vivono in città come Roma, Milano o Firenze, parlasse inglese. Sicuramente dipende anche dalla maggior affluenza di stranieri che visitano/lavorano nel nord italia.
A me, mi piace che l'Italia sia così più o meno bene in inglese, perché sono talmente d'accordo con Katie , non ci bisogna solo parlare l'inglese ma ci sono tante altre lingue per esempio che pure sia più facile da imparare a gli italiani, come il rumeno, portoghese e lo spagnolo. Ovviamente Germania e paesi del nord lo sapeve bene parlare l'inglese cioè tutte lingue germaniche
I politici italiani sanno spesso fare leggi, alle quali danno, stranamente, nomi inglesi. Ma poi sono i primi a non saperli pronunciare.
Sono Americana cosi, il mio l'inglese e bene (qualche volta lol). Ho paura quando provo parlare in italiano pero, ho trovato che parlando la lingua che si sta provando impare, e il modo migliore. Ho studiato l'italiano a scuola e all'universita, e ero nervosa sempre quando si trattava di parlarlo. quindi, non sono mai migliorata. per favore, non avere paura, e va bene sbagliare, e cosi che impariamo :)

Sono nata negli anni '70 e ho studiato inglese solo alle scuole superiori, ho frequentato il liceo linguistico e oggi ho un livello di inglese medio. Anche se nella mia scuola si studiavano le lingue, si dava più importanza alla grammatica e allo scritto, pochissima conversazione soprattutto nei discorsi diretti. Ho cercato nel tempo di mantenere almeno le basi della lingua, ascoltando video e musica. Mi rendo conto che mi è abbastanza facile capire i madrelingua, almeno il senso generale di un discorso ma ho grosse difficoltà nel parlarlo. Quando non si usa una lingua nel quotidiano si tende a "perderla". Spero che oggi il sistema scolastico sia migliorato rispetto al passato per chi desidera imparare lingue straniere...
Comprensibile, ma c'é una ragione pratica a tutto questo, le lettere Italiane hanno circa 30 suoni diversi, la lingua Inglese supera i 44 suoni, di cui circa 20 solo per le cinque vocali. Va da sè che ci risulta ostico riprodurre o percepire suoni e sfumature che solo i madrelingua sono abituati/allenati a riconoscere. Purtroppo questo gli insegnanti non lo specificano mai, ed è una delle maggiori ragioni che inducono ad approfondire la grammatica piuttosto che la pronuncia. Ho una famiglia bilingue e lo sono io stesso, ma ho ugualmente bisogno di almeno un giorno per ambientarmi quando sono in UK.

Ecco perché spesso tendo a confondere una parola con un'altra quando ascolto un madrelingua, non riesco a percepire i diversi suoni, figuriamoci riprodurli! I'm aware i make mistakes while i speak english, but honestly i don't care so much. I try my best, i'm constantly improving but it's not my native tongue so i'm nor ashamed if my speech isn't perfect.

Io riesco a parlare bene l'italiano ed anche l'inglese ma, io studio le lingue ogni singolo giorno, quindi direi che si una lingua ti piace davvero prima o poi riuscirete a parlare abbastanza bene

I would say the French & Spanish in their 20s (& older) are not worse in speaking English than Italians. Apropos: Italy's neighbour Slovenia has an English level comparable to that if the Nordics ( ref.: E.F.) . Also, ( ref.British Council) for Brits. it might be more niche ( competitive advantage) to learn Italian & Dutch ( large markets; asymmetric language abilities).
I would like to learn Italian but it seems everyone is saying the best way is to go and live there and it will soon come by necessity. Thats what Katie seems to be saying. But what if you only visit there once every two years ?

I believe it is somewhat understandable that italians don't really bother studying english. You don't need to when, as a developed occidental country, literally everything is originally in italian or translated to italian. There are plenty of different types of music and artists that originate from Italy. This language has one of the most complex and rich vocabularies in Europe, therefore italian doesn't need to take different terminology from other langages. The Roman Empire was the one to conquer other countries, pushing its culture on them, not the other way; so the different foreign influences the italian language took, were taken as "fun", not as a necessity. Even every movie you see on italian tvs or platforms are dubbed, the italian dubbing industry being a really prosperous one. Meanwhile, in Romania for exemple, a country that was for the most part under roman, russian, hungarian, turkish, etc domination, had to borrow A LOT of this languages terminology. As for learning english, after 1989, when communism was finally abolished, learning english was a must. A country that had to assimilate, in few years, western things (prohibited in the communist era) that other countries assimilated in decades, discovered new things that were all just in english. There was a period when even cartoons were not translated (the dubbing industry here is practically unexisting, EVERYBODY watches everything that comes from another country in original language with subtitles, even at tv). Plus, the gigantic wave of people who could finally leave the country to find new opportunities (one of the highest immigration rates in all Europe) that brought home new foreign things. While in italy bands like metallica or singers like michael jackson were already classics, romania was just discovering them, so we didn't have the time to take a music genre and make our own version of it (until, lets say, 15 years ago), we just took it as it was, in english. Therefore, in romania a language exists among < 35 people: rom-english (it really is a thing). So here, especially in more developed cities, you'll hear most of the teenagers and young adults alternating 2 phrases in romanian with one in english. There is more to this topic, but i wanted to make this comparison to state that, from what i observed, the more developed a country is (western countries), the more resources it has to create its own culture and doesn't have the necessity to borrow things from other langages/cultures. Meanwhile, for less developed countries (eastern countries), it's the exact opposite, so they rely more on other languages/cultures. We're not talking about nordic countries couse that's another strory :))

I studied German 2 years ago and it was too similar to English cuz both these languages are from the same group, both are germanic, that’s why germans learn English easier. Besides I don’t think that a person should be a pro or expert at a language it’s okay if we know that language to a certain or a satisfying level which we’re able to understand and speak.
Countries that do not dub TV shows and movies have better conditions for picking up other languages. As a Norwegian, I have heard every imaginable language since I was a little boy, and therefore have not only learned words, but also intonation.

Piccolo appunto: in Germania non tutti sanno l’inglese, anche se sono sicuramente molti più degli italiani. Mi sono però ritrovato in negozi dove i commessi non sapevano una parola d’inglese

Gli italiani imparerebbero l'inglese molto meglio e più velocemente se non perdessero tempo con la pronuncia. In Italia una pronuncia così aperta e vocale come quella inglese si ritrova solo in alcuni dialetti particolari e nell'accezione volgare e sguaiata, per questo si fa fatica poi a imitare quella inglese. Provate a sentire come pronuncia un inglese madrelingua la parola Toyota. Ci impiegherà 4 secondi e utilizzerà 12 muscoli facciali.
Sì ma se non si pronunciano bene le parole dubito che gli inglesi possano capire.

oggi ci sono i traduttori direttamente nello smartphone, non saranno sempre perfetti e precisi ma grazie alla tecnologia diciamo che almeno per chiedere informazioni o dare risposte non troppo articolate ai turisti sono più che sufficienti. Ovvio, se lavori all'estero o hai a che fare con un ambiente dove le lingue sono necessarie lo devi imparare quantomeno a un livello decente
