Junk food, sugar and additives - The dark side of the food industry | DW Documentary

40% of the global population is overweight or obese. Highly processed industrial foodstuffs are largely to blame. But food companies continue to focus on products that are addictive.
Sugar is one of the strongest "drugs” and can get consumers really hooked. Food giants know this only too well. That’s why they use sugar, fats and flavor enhancers to encourage people to buy their products and boost their profits. The result: more and more people around the world are overweight or obese. Illnesses such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease are becoming more prevalent. What can be done to change or even put a stop to the food industry’s strategies?

    • Well a business technical nature is to make money with least cost as possible. It’s called capitalism. We’re a society built on capitalism without morals. So if you want to change that, best to start teaching your kids young to imagine a different type of society and have them talk about it with their friends and other people. If enough people do this to their kids/future generations will most likely make a real change to how things operate

This all stems from their their economy being stifled by international sanctions for the past several decades, and also the end of economic support and food AID from USSR following the dissolution of USSR in 1991, and NK unwilling to negotiate with USA to end their Nuclear program in exchange for aid and lifting of sanctions. Prior to sanctions their economic output and GDP was significantly higher, as was the average North Koreans ability to purchase food. This kind of measures are exactly what's needed to drive the food industry into better and healthier product formulations, if they want to avoid the unhealthy food labels. Consumers must rule over corporations, not the other way around. Especially in the food industry. Congratulations to Mexico! 👍This absolutely needs to be implemented all across in Europe as well!

I was in Mexico for a while and the people even joke about the "sellos" or labels warning them that the product is high in sodium, sugar or fat. They just look at the labels and laugh saying that those labels are not going to stop them from buying the product. It's like they even think those labels are taking away their freedom and the citizens don't like that!. I know nobody who actually feels concerned about it. I've a lot of relatives who are in their late 20s and mid 30s who already suffer from diabetes and hypertension. The problem is even worse for Mexicans living in the US because even though they work really hard, all the money they earn is not used for buying healthy food, instead they buy cheap highly processed food in order to save the rest of the money and send it to their families in Mexico to throw big wedding / birthday parties.

  • As a recovering chocoholic I can testify to the fact that sugar addiction is very real. It can absolutely be compared with crack or alcohol: One is too many, ten not enough. The most insidious effect of sugar addiction is that one craves more and more of it, never being satisfied. And while one is giving in to the addiction one doesn't eat proper food like fruit and vegetables which the body actually craves and needs. The body is hungry for nutrients, but we stuff it full of junk. It's a vicious cycle. The way I finally overcame the sugar and junk food cravings was to literally eat masses of fruit and vegetables and thus satisfy my body's need for vitamins and minerals. Eventually it stopped craving and I lost a lot of weight by simply eating huge amounts of healthy foods. But I know for sure that I may never ever have anything containing processed or refined sugar. I tried it once and I fell off the wagon big time and for a prolonged period of time. I now know that (any) addiction can be managed but never cured.

    @johnbelville4566@johnbelville45669 ай бұрын
    • Warnings on food labels are hardly effective. Addicts know that sugar/crack/alcohol is bad for them, but it's what they hunger for. They are desperate to stop but can't. The only way to break the habit is to go cold turkey and to never touch the "substance" again. Moderation doesn't work here. It's not about calories and how much one eats. It's about the "what". If one stays away from processed food of any kind - which includes all so-called junk like fast food, ready-made "convenience" meals, sodas, cakes, chocolate, icecream, chips, viennas, even bread - and replaces it with fruit and vegetables and cooks simply and from scratch, the cravings will subside and the weight will come off.

    • Hi John...Men can have 3 fruits a day, females 2 fruits a day. Sugar is in fruits....if we stay the equivalent of under 6 teaspoons of sugar per day. (Sugar fruits) if you consume artificial sugar...your body still reacts the same. (Just less calories) Try intermittent fasting to help with appetite...if you have not yet. 😊

      @zoomby4380@zoomby43807 ай бұрын
    • I agree, intermittent fasting is a good thing to allow the body to rest and digest in between meals. My point was, however, to never eat processed food of any kind including refined sugar. For some reason I find that fruit sugar in its natural, whole form, i.e. in apple or pear etc. - not even as freshly pressed juice initially - is not as addictive and will assuage the cravings of a person in withdrawal. This will lessen naturally once one has replaced processed food with whole plant food and thus have given the body the nutrients it craved in the first place. Even vegetables have a certain sugar content. The "rehab" process takes about 3 to 4 weeks. If one can stick it out 100%, one is in recovery. Intermittent fasting can be introduced afterwards.

      @johnbelville4566@johnbelville45667 ай бұрын
    • Fruits should be limited as well. Most fruits are bred for the highest sugar content, because that's what people are raised to believe, "A fruit is not good if it's not sweet."; when, in fact, fruits, like vegetables, have a range of tastes and flavors.

  • I’ve worked in an NHS mental health hospital for several years now and it never ceases to amaze me the appalling lack of knowledge and awareness medical professionals such as doctors and nurses have when it comes to the link between nutrition and health. The dementia and neuropsychiatry wards are particularly bad where patients who have fasting bloods of 7- 8, and after eating 12-13 is seen as normal and of no concern. I find it ironic that diabetic patients (which there are many) are not allowed to have sugar in their drinks but yet are permitted to eat as much toast, beans, potato, cereal, pasta, rice as they like. I once voiced my concerns about this with a senior nurse, who simply shrugged her shoulders whilst telling me there’s very little sugar in bread, rice or pasta so it was fine. I couldn’t believe this highly experienced nurse didn’t have a clue how carbs are processed in the body. For a second, I was tempted to inform her that these carbs are converted into glucose by the liver causing huge blood sugar and insulin spikes. I thought better of it. My words would’ve almost certainly fallen on deaf ears. Just the other week I witnessed a nurse encouraging a diabetic patient to eat some toast before they go to bed as their bloods were too low 5.8. I couldn’t quite believe what I was seeing. After the toast her bloods shot up to 12! The nurse was happy with this and allowed her to go to bed. Many patients are encouraged to eat three meals per day plus snacks and supper which include pudding after every meal (usually cake and custard). toast, and copious amounts of biscuits. Many patients who’s bloods are too low (5-6 range) for their insulin shots are encouraged to eat several biscuits so they can get their shot. Patients who refuse meals as they’re simply NOT HUNGRY are regularly bullied into submission and virtually force fed. Nurses and staff go into a blind panic thinking that missing a meal or two will somehow have a detrimental effect. For those who don’t cave into the pressure it’s not long before the Ensures (full of sugar) are being pushed upon them. It’s a farce. As a result of this appalling lack of understanding around nutrition many patients pile on the weight, and their condition deteriorates rapidly. Many patients are on a whole cocktail of drugs which seem to have very little positive effect whatsoever. In fact, I’m convinced many suffer detrimental side effects as a result. This is an NHS hospital where patients are supposed to come to get better. It’ a sad state of affairs! What the heck is going on!?

Seriously, it's our responsibility with knowledge to use it to better our peers. It's easy to feel overwhelmed by a crushingly powerful system, but we have some power to change it. I'm on a mini crusade to help my friends and family get off of three things: 1. Seed oils (basically industrial byproducts that are high in bad fats. Sunflower, safflower, canola, etc). Try to use extra virgin olive oil or natural butter for cooking instead, and be aware how common these oils are in almost everything. 2. Highly processed grains 3. Added sugars (anything on a label that says "added sugar" that's more than 0g) If you can avoid those three things as much as possible, you are already 80% of the way there, according to Calley Means, who used to be a corporate lobbyist for some of these unethical companies. I think if more people take it as a personal responsibility to change themselves and others around them, corporations will feels it where it hurts--their wallets.

I watch the staff shove more and more bowls of carbs under the blind woman, who is getting bigger and bigger. They serve desserts and lots of potatoes and macaroni and juice and ice cream here. I used to eat the food here and half my hair fell out. I did that because texas only allows its nursing home residents $60 of their social security checks to be kept every month. I could not afford organic raw veggies and fruits. So in July I kept my $918 of RSDI unearned income so that I could buy these organic foods. My hair stopped falling out. AND they don't find it important to wash my feet and legs where the metabolic acidosis wounds are. When covid shut down the libraries and parks, I began to sit for long periods of time. Status dermititus started with an open wound at the ankle to let out liquid. Now I have 3 wounds because I can't walk. Turns out that these sugars and carbs are acidic foods and we are alkaline beings. These processed foods turn our bodies acidic so that there is injury to the microbiome and blood vessels and organs. Swelling legs and feet mean inflammation derived from injury. Sugar is literally a poison as it clumps red cells together. This means that corporations are deliberately causing these people to become bigger and heavier. This causes even more pain which sells more pills. They tell me that medicare/medicaid makes the rules and they can't change it. Yet I have read that we are supposed to be getting a diet made specifically for each one of us. We, as consumers, deserve to know precisely what goes into the food we eat and how it impacts our health. It's not just a matter of personal choice; it's about making informed decisions for ourselves and our families. Documentaries like this play a crucial role in shedding light on these issues and prompting change. I learned once your body is nourished properly, your body/brain will tell you to stop eating. Like, you can't overeat once you body has all the nutrients it needs. There's a reason the government tells us not to eat animal foods and super low fat foods. When our body is deprived of essential fatty acids(animal fats) that switch in our brain that tells us we are nourished gets shut off, this is the reason we constantly eat and can't stop eating junk food because these foods don't nourish us. • I had the privilege to be a stay-at-home-mother of two children (it was not always easy and many times I thoroughly hated it ...), I cooked lunch and dinner and from birth avoided giving them sugar, the snacks were mostly fruit, nuts and also cookies sometimes, saying this I am also saying that the children's diets need to be monitored either by the parents or other care takers. It is a sad fact that many children today must fend for themselves, the parents are both working (because they need to) and grandparents are often not around or too far away. They often go to school without a decent breakfast and sometimes getting lunch is a rare occasion. In situations like these children grab the next best edible thing which is mostly junk food and if this becomes a habit, nothing else is as good as all that fat and sugar. Obesity in children is a huge problem in our society and is often seen in the lower income population because junk food is so so much cheaper than healthy food. I don't have a solution to this, the only thing I can say is that our society needs a big, BIG change, children are the future generations and they need to be looked after properly, you cannot blame everything on the state, on the multinationals, on all the people or organisations that want to make money out of all of our weaknesses. We, the parents, need to take responability for our children's wellbeing, their education. I firmly believe that all these eating disorders are like a cancer in this world, it all starts with a single person but it grows and grows and touches every part of our lives, health, work, realtionships etc. It truly is a sad situation, especially if children are involved.

And if lack of time or something else forces us to buy instead of bake, we get certain things over and over, from which we now that they make us feel saturated in a healthy way. Reading the ingredients is a must with anything you eat (And sadly not only once, but at least every few months, there are products we ditched after the ingredients changed for the worse.). We are not exactly thin, but at least growing some food in our garden and being cautious allows us to be overall healthy. And we got more cautious over the years and moved towards mostly buying only basic ingredients (And ordering many spices from the internet; you need more of them if you do not use too much fat and salt, most have health benefits and the quality of the spices we could get without ordering online is too low.). Yes, coking and baking is work, although developing routines makes it easier. But I also have the impression that it gets easier over the months and years to withstand most of the food (poison) industry crap. Your taste changes from finding those things alluring to finding them to taste bland. And knowing you can eat tasty things that allow you to actually feel good does not make eating artificial things that leave you fatigued or quickly hungry again look attractive. But the change for the better for whole societies and the whole world will not come if this is the only way.

TV watching on weekends. Since childhood I know sweet is bad, so my brain rejects sweet food. Im 40+ and still wear Small size. Parents should be strict and lead by example as it comes to a diet.

    • how you where raised doesn’t necessarily effect your diet in adulthood. many kids who where raised in a strictly healthy food household rebel and eat a lot of junk food once they move out and gain freedom. just as many kids who where raised around unhealthy junk food might grow tired of it and begin eating healthy once they move out of that environment. i’m the second one, my parents always had junk food on tap and now that i’m older i’m so sick of it and it doesn’t even tempt me.

    • @@sphxx7995not really, children get habits in their families, new habits are more difficult to build up. Your change is more based on the protest and refusal action towards your parents direct on the food, well, obviousy, it is good for you. You shoud study the real things connected with your parents you reject though.Maybe the way they supported and cared for you you could not accept or their imperfections, well, it would be better watch own ones.)

    • @@EnglishElly sure, many children get habits in their families. but some habits, especially good habits, are much easier to break than they where to create. and bad habits, though more difficulty broken, are breakable with effort. my “change” really has nothing to do with my parents, they never forced me to eat junk food they would just buy it, and being a child, i would eat it. once i began buying my own groceries, obviously, i started to buy different and more healthy things. you’re reading too deeply into this and fail to give me any form of credit for my own choices. also, i don’t “reject” my parents, they’re great people and i feel it’s weird and invasive for you to come onto the internet and make such stark claims with so little knowledge about me. you don’t know me. so please save your attempted psychoanalysis’ for your “studies”.

  • If you control your glucose levels by simply cutting down sugar, it will cure obesity and most of health issues. You don't even have to exercise, the body is amazing at healing itself. Exercise helps of course for many other reasons, but again a simple walk each day will do wonders! People just take things into extremes, you don't need to bench 500lbs and run 50miles a day.

  • Imagine the Nestle lady was street drug dealer and said: "Yeah, definitely drug addiction is bad. I suggest better education of kids so they know drugs we sell are bad." While thinking "Education cannot beat addiction" at the same time. There is strong paralel between drug dealers and processed food producers (focus is on sugar of course).

  • This is so tragic. We can rely only on ourselves and critical thinking that determine what's best for us. In 2017, I gave up fast food and soda. Later on, I gave up take out and only go to restaurants with friends. I went from 208 to 125 pounds. Not bragging but saying it can be done with persistence and discipline.

  • Simple ways to reduce how many calories you eat: 1. Stop drinking your calories, you don't need soda or smoothies or fruit juice or milk shakes or those really rich 'coffees' with a lot of cream and syrup. Drink water, black tea or black coffee. 2. Write down everything you eat in a day. You don't have to count calories but just write down what you eat when you're about to eat it, and look at the list when you're about to eat again. For instance, so far today I had coffee with soy milk, a small bag of Skittles, and three slices of olive bread. If i feel like eating again in a few hours I'll look at my list to remind myself I've already had a small snack (Skittles) but that I've not yet had fruit so fruit would be good to eat then. 3. Smaller portions. Get a smaller plate or bowl to eat from. When you've finished that, wait for 15 minutes or so before deciding if you want to eat a second serving. None of these things cost money but they help you be aware of what you eat and help to reduce portion size.
