Diana Nyad Arrives in Key West After 111-Mile Swim From Cuba
KEY WEST, Fla. -- Endurance swimmer Diana Nyad walked ashore on Key West's Smathers Beach about 1:30 p.m. on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 2, 2013, becoming the first person to swim across the Florida Straits from Cuba to the Florida Keys without a shark cage.
"Never, ever give up," said the 64-year-old Nyad, her face swollen and salt-encrusted from the 111-mile swim that she had attempted four times previously. "You're never too old to chase your dreams."
She began the weekend's marathon in Havana at 8:59 a.m. Saturday and swam continuously for 52 hours and 54 minutes. Nearly 2,000 people greeted her with loud cheers and applause as she reached the beach and hugged her lead handler Bonnie Stoll, then lay down on a stretcher so medics could check her physical condition.
Nyad first attempted the Florida Straits crossing in 1978 when she was 28 years old. More than 30 years later, in 2011, she tried twice but was foiled by shoulder pain, a debilitating in-water asthma attack and multiple severe jellyfish stings.
During a 2012 attempt, she suffered multiple painful and debilitating stings from box jellyfish despite wearing a protective full-body suit each night.
She donned the suit, gloves and a specially crafted silicone face mask each night to protect her from jellyfish during this weekend's swim, and was accompanied by kayakers with electronic shark repelling devices.
While Nyad is the first person to swim across the Florida Straits from Cuba to the Florida Keys without a shark cage, Australian swimmer Susie Maroney accomplished the crossing with a cage in 1997.
I was a shark diver on that trip to Cuba with dyana. I swam with her at 4 am in 3ft seas in 1600ft of water the night before. When she came to the beach I was directly behind her to her right with blue board shorts and white shirt. She was unbelievable!!! What an inspiration!!!
Please do reply does she stop for a rest for some time in boat between her journey or she swim it all in one go and how many time did she take to complete her journey coz my friends are making fun of me when I tell about this to them that nobody without taking a break can do that thing
@@_Since-1994I think she was in the water the whole time but people fed her and gave her water while she was in it
She did it without ever touching the boat. She was to be disqualified if anyone touched her. The people on the boat gave her food and water while she swam@@_Since-1994

Just watched the movie on Netflix and all the actors did an incredible job! Such an inspiration ❤
Annette’s performance she blew it out of the water !!!
The movie was awesome, incredible story ❤
She is a fraud
I hope Annette wins an Oscar for the movie. She was brilliant.
I just finished it! Amazing omg. Everyone killed their roles. I was tearing up and even though I know how it ends I was like come on! Come on! Excellent film. Absolutely loved it! ❤
I climbed a mountain yesterday 50 meters. Darn near passed out. My respects to this lady
thats a hill
You set yourself a goal and achieved it. Good for you.
With a 10-person support team around u, I bet
She's a fraud... the Netflix series was total BS its sad they promote that shit
I climbed a flight of stairs to my apartment today and nearly passed out. She’s a beast.
So happy to see a feature film with two kick-ass women leading, Annette Benning and Jody Foster. Thank you, Diana, for listening to your heart and showing yourself, and the world, that where there's a will, there's a way. I hope Diana enjoys the limelight again with the movie.
Tears keep falling, I love what she said " never give up" she is a total inspiration.
Yes because no on else has ever said that. 😢
Amen!!!!!!!!!!!

Great quote. How did she think of that
@@joshuaramirezother said that too, and?
Who’s here after watching Nyad on Netflix? 🙋🏽♂️
She is a freaking beast. One of the most amazing things ever in endurance sports !
A man did it long before her. She also has 0 evidence of completing this swim
0 evidence? Haha @@ac-qd2cg
I met Diana Nyad last night at her book signing in St. Louis, and got a soul hand shake and a smooch/hug and a pic with her. She is beyond cool. I bought her book and she autographed it for me. she is a highly motivational speaker - Love it -- “What you get by achieving your goals is not as important as what you become by achieving your goals.” ― Henry David Thoreau
Flat-earthers/antivaxxers/conservatives/climate deniers/trumpanzees/trumpvoters will claim Nyad's swim was all "fake" and that this is just an "actor" and that there is "no evidence she ever made the swim" and that "all the evidence Nyad made the swim was fake" and "everybody who was physically with her confirming her swim was just paid to lie". That is what conservatives say about everything achievement that requires hard sacrifice and work.
Diana Nyad, who came into this world "with powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal men." Incredible. I followed her attempts years before and her accomplishing it at age 64 just astounded me! She has to be the greatest swimmer or athlete, for that matter.

Did she swim across the English Channel?
@@Scarcity2010she swam from Cuba to Florida, much farther than the English Channel. She’s swam the equivalent of the English Channel many times over. Also the water is more treacherous in many ways, like the jellyfish and sharks
@@elljeltyPhelps has nothing on her

Who would dislike this? Seriously? This is one of the most inspiring things I have ever seen. Just once, I would like to see unanimity on something that is so clearly ironclad and wonderful. I mean, this isn't about politics, religion, war, race, anything like that. I don't get it.
+Robert Ferguson I was thinking the same thing
Probably some people think there was some unfair play here. I sure thing hope all was honest. This is such an emotional moment and the effort that went into this is unimaginable.
Probably the fraud and continued refusal to address valid issues with her supposed accomplishment.
@@zydration3538why would they lie specifically on her 5th attempt lmao, 40+ people with her during the travel and they all said the same thing
@@dragonverde188 why does attempt number hold any relevance? Aside from lying being more likely after 4 failed attempts. There were no independent observers, as well as numerous gaps in the timeline.
This out of this world impressive. It’s not even the distance but the sheer dynamic of the ocean who’d make it seem like that completely impossible to pull off let alone by a 64 year old woman.

Right?? I want some of that!! Truly inspiring!
@@80snewromatic you have it already!!! get out and find it
Wow, she really shows that you're never too old to give up on your dream from 30 years ago. I hope she'll recover and show us more incredible things. Wow.
She recovered just fine; what you see here is mostly just exhaustion and the result of being repeatedly stung by jellyfish.
She didn't achieve anything it is not recognised by any marathon swimming governing body worldwide and the Guinness world record to not recognise it as she has no evidence she completed the swim.
Just watched the movie, what a human, what a friend and what a story!
I just watched the Netflix movie about her- twice. It was so good. So inspirational! She's amazing!
Same👍
This must have been very scary for her. All that screaming after that gigantic journey. But she seems pumped and thankful. Good for her!!! This is amazing xo
She is definitely one of my favorite people. She's incredible and deserves another life of the greatest passions for living.
For anyone who wants to see the emotion and the journey to get there, watch the immensely beautiful film adaptation. These are films that today's young people should watch and not all so-called influencers promoting cosmetics! This is movie is beautiful, inspiring and motivating. We humans can achieve anything, as long as we are willing to keep looking at ourselves, dreams and goals! Enjoyed it immensely, cried and laughed with happiness. What a worldly woman. The actors and their team have created this beautifully.
Shouldn't today's young people be taught the value of honesty, along with the far older people in this video and the Netflix lifetime drivel producers?
I heard there’s gonna be a movie about this. I’m excited for it but no movie can ever do justice as much as this woman has done she is inspirational and she is one of my heroes. If there’s something you’re searching for doing just do it and don’t give up that’s what I love about her.
Netflix recently released the trailer for NYAD. Annette Bening and Jodie Foster are the main characters:)
