Extremely rare third feature by filmmaker Charles Lane (Sidewalk Stories) was produced for the 11th season of PBS' American Playhouse.
This drama focuses on one Christmas at the Messiah Church in Washington D.C., when a young preacher and, later in the day, a mysterious pregnant girl arrive at the church doors looking to begin new lives. The preacher, the Reverend Oliver Crawford, is not the judgemental church committee's first choice to be the Messiah's new pastor; the unwed father of a teenage son, he is given only two days to prove his worth to his new parishioners. Faced with a difficult situation, Crawford makes use of his brief probation by familiarizing himself with the local homelessness problem. Meanwhile, Katherine, a sixteen-year-old girl who is about to give birth, has come to the area to escape an abusive home and to search for a grandfather she doesn't know. With the help of local homeless advocate "Big" Willie Thorton, Crawford attempts to revive the spirit of the church and provide solace to the displaced girl.
First Aired: December 22, 1993 Old Man Taylor: James Earl Jones. Mayor Turner: Phylicia Rashad. Big Willie: Keith David. Nat: Deon Richmond. Katherine: Tracy Douglas. Eunice: Suzzanne Douglas.

  • I have a gift from God, and he is now 15 yrs. old. His father abandoned us when he became two yrs. old. My son is precious to me. This movie was about love, and acceptance of others. It’s also about unconventional family. This movie was all about love, and helping each other in a cold and dark world. Keep the faith, because God will make a way out of now way!

    • Brenda, the Lord gave you the gift of your son and I know that you thank him daily for this. "Family is also a sense of where a person feels that they are loved." Including, yes, "unconventional families." In today's climate, having guidance and support IS indeed a blessing. May you both continue to do well.

Keith David has a BOOMING VOICE and Dennis Haysbert is so handsome and REALLY TALL! 🤔 Don't know why James Earl Jones had such a mean spirit on the set 🤷🏽‍♀️....but everyone else was great to work with....And oh yeah....😋👉🏽 the food was great 😂👍🏽!!!

    • As a person that seems to be generally kind, James Earl Jones was probably professionally trying to "stay in character". I was surprised to see that someone had casted him to portray a man that was an absolute grouch.

    • @@lisabyrd6531 that's a good observation, Lisa😄. He's such a great actor, I wouldn't put that past him.....But the ENTIRE 3 DAYS he was grouchy. More like a curmudgeon 😂! He snapped at the director several times, and refused to stand on the GREEN "X" (camera angle) while everyone else willingly did. Believe me 😏👉🏽, for three days, every "CUT" was cutting my behind and everyone else' sitting on those hard pews 😂😂😂!!! I'm aware of Actors' contractual limits when it comes to the Extras on the set. But the rest of the cast, along with Suzanne Douglas and Deon Richmond, were SOOOOOO nice and conversational during lunch breaks. Brief in their exchanges, but pleasant. Mr. Jones sat in a Church row all to himself and he refused to eat😳! We thought: Was this movie beneath him🤷🏽‍♀️? 🤔He was definitely a head-scratcher 😂!!!

  • I don't know why the pregnant young lady, so soft spoken, kind of made me sad struggling carrying that baby. But she sure was pulling her own weight with the suitcase and the baby. I shedded some tears, at certain times, during this movie, but the choir singing, at the end, picked my spirits right up, as I sung a little with them. I was kind of expecting Phylicia Rashad to hook up with the pastor, where at least his son, would have a mother. And I wanted to whip his son, lol, for giving his dad a hard time ,and stayed gone some hours. But when he came back, and talked about it, it's something how hearing their side you understand better, and you're not angry anymore at them. Because I grew up with a mama, and mostly everybody has, but when he asked the pregnant girl, what it was like to have a mama, that said it all for me, and I understood why he had been acting mean, and frustrated, and tearing up that nice house. And the answer that young lady gave him was so perfect and it described how I felt having a mother, and I'm sure we all do. A mom is like a safety net, to me, also. But I know this movie was focused around the birth, of the baby. Love how James Earl Jones took the baby out into the elements, and prayed good life for the baby. That is an old african heritage, I saw on Roots, and I think people need to go back to that, and speak life over the baby, after birth. It sure couldn't hurt. Great movie, and great cast. Thank you✌🏽
