  • "Why Cargo Ships Are Forbidden to Avoid Monster Waves" TItel not explained, well done. Ships are allowed to avoid monster waves, they may and will seek shelter if they can.

  • Ships designed to have an average density less than the surrounding air as stated about 1:05 are called airships. Designing an ocean going ship to be lighter than air would be a truly impressive accomplishment. As an engineer myself, I give you "props" for an otherwise excellent and entertaining video.

    • Actually, as a marine engineer and lifelong sailor, I have to say that was the most innocuous of dozens of misrepresentations in this clip. It struck me as a bit like the British radio show "David Mitchell's The Unbelievable Truth" where contestants smuggle occasional snippets of truth into otherwise implausible stories and score points for each undetected true claim.

  • They're called self-righting boats and the best at this game are the little 30-40 foot sailing cruisers - but this kind of boat design began with hookas and orkas used by the Irish back when Latin was the lingua franca and all roads led to Rome. They could sail circles around the Roman boats and that's why the Romans sent a delegation to the British Isles. For me, sometimes it's fun if I try to imagine how things would have turned out if the Romans had acquired Irish boat-building tech....

    @Mercurio-Morat-Goes-Bughunting@Mercurio-Morat-Goes-Bughunting18 күн бұрын
    • So the Irish refused to sell their boat schematics to the Romans? And they couldn't steal one for reverse engineering? Now I have to go look all that up. You do seem to be history knowledgeable, with a love of the well written sentence. Sigh, you are a dying breed. Bless your path, and during your life please model for at least one impressionable mind the bounty of learning.

  • Having been active in maritime environment for many years (some hairy but exhilarating experiences)I can clearly remember the giant bulk carrier incident many years ago. All hands lost. Happened at night somewhere in the Pacific in extremely rough waters. With the sheer cargo weight it carries all it takes for example is for ONE deck hatch to pop off. Allowing water entry. This particular giant carrier did not even have time....to send off an emergency distress signal.....which only takes seconds.

  • with the titanic, the water tight compartments were not sealed. they also did not extend high enough. in most modern ships each water tight section is actually sealed with whats called bulkhead deck. when fully sealed each section can be flooded, and in some ships, they can flood sections on purpose to keep ship balanced.

  • Air-tight-hatches can be a devastating feature: when a fire below decks occurs the crew can deprive it of oxygen by dogging the hatches as an airlock, the fire consumes the oxygen & burns itself out before spreading; fire consumes air making a vacuum, then the fire goes out, expanded-steam & air cool, contracting the air-pressure increasing the vacuum: water-pressure and atmospheric-vacuum combine to fold-the-ship equalizing pressure differences.

  • i see a lot of comments people comparing with titanic. titanic crashed into a big rock and not wrecked by waves, those are 2 different things. also titanic wasnt the same build as ships these days. a cargo ship aint a passengership like they show you in the video. also they dont show you the torque forces of a bottom of a ship what it does when going on high waves. with high waves the bow want to turn to left mean while the rear end want to torque to the right (or otherway around). this causes verry high forces on the weldings of a ship (specialy the cross parts of the weldings) were the chance of breaking is the highest!. its like sailing on a sandbank with a cargo ship (it can break in half) and will start crack at the cross points of the weldings and then go further all the way up!!! a wrong way of loading a cargo ship gives the same results (it can break in half) caused by wrong forces at front and rear. i have build and welded long ships for long years 140meters length👍
