  • I had trouble with timing and coordination or breathing in freestyle until I realized that it's very similar in to breathing when you sing, where you have to take a breath only occasionally and then regulate its release. So I started taking a breath and then singing to myself (I started with 'Up the Lazy River') as I swam, sometimes even 'vocalizing'; as almost all songs a re 4/4 time that helps coordinate arm movements and breathing as well. The other thing that helped was paying attention to diaphragmatic breathing, and breathing by just opening the mouth and allowing the relaxing diaphragm muscles to take in the air by themselves.

  • The biggest challenge for me has been to actually exhale enough air before turning my head to breathe to avoid the buildup of co2 in my blood. I've tried doing those sinkdowns, but I've found that it's not that easy to tell if I've exhaled enough air while I'm actually swimming. I also forget to breathe out if I'm not paying close attention. Ultimately it's too many little things that I have to pay attention to, while being in that sort of panicking state of mind like you said. Like should I breathe through my nose, mouth, or both? Ideally I want to find a rhythm and just stick with it, but so far no matter what I've tried, I always become exhausted after 100-200 metres and my form starts to fall apart. In my experience the most difficult aspect of swimming is breathing in freestyle, which has been very hard for me to put into muscle memory. I'll try this next.

    • Márton Zay I definitely understand your frustration. The best way to break this cycle is to learn the rhythm first before attempting it when you are swimming. So practice the rehearsal shown in the video for nine to ten minutes straight with no stopping will help you get into a groove eliminating all the complexities of breathing. You will also find out if you are exhaling to little or too much when you practice this in place. The goal is to do this without stopping. If you feel the need to stop, you will know what to do to keep you relaxed. I go through in more detail about the exchange of air here: kzhead.info/sun/aL2zZJmBppqGgp8/bejne.html -Coach Mandy🏊🏼‍♂️

  • I was doing the technique well that made me feel comfortable and better. But I was getting tired as I reach 400m. I tried for many days till I figured out the tuning I should have done; timing! Timing of exhaling is so vital to me. I start to exhale when my left hand is in the recovery phase (out of water). Still my right hand is stretched forward. When I start the right hand stroke I inhale. Like this I broke the barrier of 3km swimming ✌️😉😃

  • My biggest challenge was getting over the fear of putting my face in the water and breathing! Now that I overcame that fear, I am swimming in a weekly group class and practicing during the week. When I freestyle swim I find it hard to keep my head on my ear and I over rotate to get my face out of the water to breath. Or, I have also lifted my head out of the water, again to get my face out of the water to breath. I am exhausted and out of breath after one length of the pool. I have been practicing the bobbing and breathing, in between laps to catch my breath, but still get too tired to do more than one pool length at a time. Or, I do freestyle and switch to backstroke to catch my breath and then back to freestyle. I am glad to have watched this drill which is new to me and I am running to the pool now to try it. TY!

Then all of a sudden the build up of CO2 happens and makes me rise my head higher than I was doing during the initial 20 meters and eventually legs sink, I get tired and have to stop. • Breathing is my biggest problem [of many] trying to learn to swim better - I think I am not as relaxed as others/as I should be and end up sorta hyperventilating, maybe (over)filling and emptying my lungs to an extreme or at least more than a good swimmer/breather does. Since yesterday I came to naming my breathing style “gasping” - is that why I cannot go more than 25-30m? [maybe 50m very max if I push myself]. Practicing now to try to calm myself down and get more comfortable as an [fake] aquatic animal. I am inclined to put it down to a few bad experiences as a small child [i.e. out of my depth, in water, and hence never learned to swim until I was a teen] - coaching comments welcome [go easy plz]. I had a first lesson in ages yesterday and the teacher commented that “every time you breath it’s quite the EVENT” - I think he was spot on tbvh.

    @adambird9949@adambird99494 жыл бұрын

    @bozhidarmadzharov7066@bozhidarmadzharov70664 жыл бұрын
    • No need for a drill. How to correct this issue is to focus on getting the breath early. You are moving your head position too late which is 1. throwing you out of sync and 2. will make you feel lower in the water thus taking too long to breath. There should be zero delay as you rotate for a breath. Try getting the breath early and refer back to my freestyle breath demonstrations to see the timing which will give you more context to this specific point. Let me know how it goes by dropping a comment below! 🏊😄 Coach Mandy

If so, you would be holding your breath incorrectly. If not, you have established correct breathing rhythm/timing that works for you. 🙌🙏 This part of the stroke is very much unique to each swimmer. -Coach Mandy

  • I’m so glad I found your channel. Thank you. I finally feel slight comfort with the freestyle breathing but feel I made a mistake just turning to one side as I was learning. . My instructor said I could learn to do both or pick a comfortable side. I chose wrong. Now I feel like I am starting over as I train to breathing to both sides. I’m fighting muscle memory and the anxiety of when I miss is terrible. I’ve tried counting. That helps some. I’m going to do this standing drill and turn to each side. Any other advice ?

    @Gutisusa@Gutisusa5 жыл бұрын
    • Susan G I’m so happy you found my videos helpful! Yes you are correct a general rule is to practice both sides equally to avoid falling only dependent on one side. If you only are comfortable with one side only, your breathing typically will have habits formed due to trying to compensate to get the air. The best thing for you to do right now is to just practice the standing drill definitely on your uncomfortable side and slow it down. You want to become more comfortable with turning your head to the side with your neck relaxed. This takes time so give yourself permission to be patient. Even though it seems like this drill is not a big deal it’s actually really important as it helps you rehearse the breath in place and you will start to understand and feel where tension could be. So bottom line, practice this in place on both sides and trust the process! -Coach Mandy 👏🏼🏊🏼‍♀️🙌🏽

I’ve gotten better at keeping my head low and having half of my face lay in the water as I take a breath in through my mouth but I always take in water through my mouth as I take a breath. I’ve tried to lift my head more as I take a breath but then I get exhausted to quick at only 20 ish meters. How do I keep one side of my face in the water and breath in through my mouth and not take in water through my mouth? Much appreciation for any suggestions.

    • Hello Debbie - great question. There are two factors that contribute to getting water and feeling out of breath or panicked. This has to do with alignment and establishing a proper foundation to your freestyle first. Once you are level, then it is time to start practicing breath control and the mechanics of the movement. You do not want to lift your head as this causes your body line to fall and you end up panicking and taking in more water. The key is to stay relaxed and keep your head still and down. There is a process and structure to learning how to swim freestyle correctly. I have this all detailed in the following swim courses inside my digital community. 📲 SWIMVICE Kickstart Part 1 - helps you achieve and execute alignment 📲 SWIMVICE Kickstart Part 2 - how to time and connect your kick properly 📲 SWIMVICE Breathing Series - how to achieve a smooth complete breath in your freestyle technique 👉🏼 You can learn more by visiting here: community.swimvice.com/ Hope this helps answer your question Debbie. @jorgeaguinaga6817@jorgeaguinaga68174 жыл бұрын
    • Jorge Aguinaga yes that’s definitely a significant reason as to why you are having problems breathing. You never exhale everything because you would automatically sit lower in the water and it would make you feel out of breath. It is a fine balance to keep you buoyant and comfortable at the same time. 👍🏼 -Coach M

    • I am not able to understand how much to breathe out. The same problem happens with me. If i breathe out lesser than when i turn to inhale i have only a limited amount of air and inside the water i have nothing to exhale which causes anxiety and i have to stop to take a breath.

      @gurpremjitsingh7047@gurpremjitsingh70474 жыл бұрын
    • Gurpremjit Singh the short answer to your problem is that you are exhaling way too much too quickly which gives you no reserve for the roll to breathe and also no reserve to keep you relaxed and balanced (this is where the anxiety is triggered). I haven’t gone through this in a video yet however go to the exercise at 2:38 of this video. Do this exercise in place and breathe as often as you need. Try to do this for a solid amount of time for about 2-5 minutes. What you will start to discover is where you are out of sync. You will then adapt and change to help you sustain this given amount time. For example, maybe you need to calm your exhale to a steady stream. This is very personal to you so this exercise will help you find out what is happening and how to change it. Give yourself patience with this point it does take time but try not to get frustrated as that type of mindset will hold you back from ever figuring it out. So go through the rehearsal exercise with the intent to practice the exchange. Try it out and let me know how it goes! You will get this it’s just a matter of time. 🙌🏽🏊🏼‍♂️ -Coach Mandy

    • @@SWIMVICE okay so constant breathe out from nose or mouth? Is it true that breathing out though the nose means you don't get a build up of CO2 and become fatigued?

      @David-wh7rm@David-wh7rm5 жыл бұрын
    • @@David-wh7rm good question... so it's easier if I answer this in two parts. 1) If you are struggling with breathing, its easier to control the exhale through your nose versus the mouth. This significantly helps with understanding the exchange of air when you rehearse it in place. 2) You can exhale through your mouth ( it is not wrong ) however learning this sequence by separating the two ( i.e only exhale with your nose / only inhale with your mouth ) from the start will help you relax and overall and you won't build up CO2 in your lungs. Try the rehearsal on your own and only allow yourself to exhale "smoothly" on the roll out, then once you feel air on your mouth inhale through your mouth. Lastly, exhale through your nose on the roll back to where you started. Notice how I breathe in the rehearsal on video. I am using the same sequence. :-) Let me know how you feel afterwards. - Coach M

    • @@SWIMVICE thank you, I'll defo try that in about 3 weeks when my toe is healed / not broken and I can get back to it. It's funny, I've felt I could control the breath more by exhaling though my mouth but I guess not as I still get tired too quickly, so I'll give this a go: breathe out through my nose and when turning my head just open my mouth and inhale, and not try to take a massive breath and get tense. Final bonus question if you fancy top points 😉 I've heard you should breathe in using your diaphragm, let's say I breathe out steadily and relaxed through my nose, turn my head, open mouth, how do I breathe in relaxed but using my diaphragm? Does this mean just from deep down in your chest? How do you do this but stay relaxed and not end up focusing on a 'big breath'? Thank you!!!

      @David-wh7rm@David-wh7rm5 жыл бұрын
    • @@David-wh7rm exhaling from your mouth is not wrong either. Most people are able to relax and control the exhale easier through their nose because you still have to exhale through the nose regardless when you roll for a breath. Diaphragmatic breathing is to help you expand the breath from your stomach versus from your chest. Most swimmers who struggle being out of breath is due to breathing shallow from the chest only. This causes stress, anxiety, and overall not feeling satisfied with the inhale either. So how do you practice a diaphragmatic breath? Lie down on the floor, elevate your legs on a sofa or chair, and place one hand on your stomach with one hand on your chest. Practice a slow inhale through your mouth where you feel your stomach expand for 4 seconds then exhale consistently through your nose as you feel your belly fall. This sequence should feel seamless, no interruptions, and no stress. You can even use the breathing app on your Iphone if you have one and it will guide you with the timing of a relaxed and mindful breath. Try it out and let me know how it goes! Anytime you feel fatigued as yourself are you tired? OR are you just out of breath? If its the second point then use this breathing exercise to feel more comfortable each day! - Coach Mandy

  • my wife has been working to breathe more easily on her 'awkward' side. For her this is the right side. The problem as I watch it is that when she breathes to the right she rotates her head in such as way that her entire face is out of the water and almost looking straight up to the roof she also lifts her head a bit too during the rotation. This face rotation takes more time than breathing to her left so her hips roll to almost 90 degrees perpendicular to the water's surface. This over rotation causes her to lose her balance/stability. To correct this over rotation she then does a kick in which her legs are splayed to correct for the over rotation. To her credit she spends a great deal of time in the pool swimming using a two beat breath to the right rhythm and doing a drill where she grasps onto the edge of the pool with her left arm extended and then breaths to the right side as she gently kicks. Progress is slow but I think it is getting better.

    • Mike Bailey great observation Mike. What would help is to practice the movement in place and getting comfortable with have one goggle in the water. Instead of seeing the air, she needs to feel the air on her top goggle, nose, and mouth. This will help her shift her position to stay low and not roll her face all the way out of the water which is too far. Most people think they need to see the air in order to breathe but that comes with a huge consequence. It’s much lower than people realize and you create more space to breathe. • When I trying to breath my body going to sink Can you please help me out how to fix this issue

    • You are probably lifting your head out of the water too much. Instead of lifting your head try twisting your head to the side.

  • Hello, I just started learning how to swim and I am so discouraged. The breathing is the hardest for me. When I turn to the side I always take in water and I also feel like I'm sinking.

  • I feel panicked while breathing in swimming. It's been a month I have been learning swimming at the age of 22. Before that I had been hydrophobic. Can I ever get over the feeling of panic which allows me to barely swim beyond 5 metres??😭😭😭

  • I don’t know if I am supposed to rotate my torso or just my head.

    • It is hips, torso, and head position all together. Your hips guide the breath.🏊😀🙌 -Coach Mandy
