Free Guy: Watch Taika Waititi’s Improvisational Skills on Set
Ahead of Free Guy's release on digital on September 28th, and 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray on October 12th, Collider has an exclusive clip showcasing Taika Waititi’s incredible riffing abilities on set.
The video begins with Jodie Comer, who plays Millie/Molotovgirl in Free Guy saying of Waititi, “I literally came to set on days that I wasn’t in to watch his scenes. Because what that guy does is, like, insane.” The video then displays the impressive improvisational skills of Waititi as the character of Antwan, the head developer at Soonami Games, who have made the game at the center of Free Guy.
In the video, Waititi talks about how important the screenplay is to him as an actor, and points out how even though he might be going off script, what is on the page certainly influences where he goes in these riffs. Waititi certainly knows the importance of the screenplay, having won an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for his film Jojo Rabbit. But this clip presents just how great Waititi is when director Shawn Levy let him loose while on the set of the Soonami Games studios.
Free Guy comes to digital on September 28, and 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray on October 12.
Here’s the synopsis for Free Guy:
A bank teller (Ryan Reynolds) who discovers he is actually a background player in an open-world video game decides to become the hero of his own story - one he rewrites himself. Now, in a world where there are no limits, he is determined to be the guy who saves his world his way… before it’s too late.

I like how he respects the script and didn't just say "I like to make stuff up"
Yeah, dont want to end up like Joey getting fired from days of our lives.
no he loves making shit up
@@jenniferheart885 Yes, but he didn't just praise himself, he acknowledged and gave credit to the script and the writers. That's quite humble of him.
He's a writer and director himself so of course he would give credit and make sure he doesn't give crew and cast a complicated time. Also considering his character as the antagonistic force, he can improvise and make him larger than life.
I cannot imaging not simping him if I had to work with him. Dude looks like that, is naturally funny, yet so inclusive and relaxed. No way is he not the star of every production he’s on.
What he says at the end is important. He gives credit where credit is due and when the spotlight is on him, he underscores the importance of everyone around him at that moment. Class act.
thats what money does to ya
@@jenniferheart885 money usually inflates egos and encourages selfishness
I don’t want to say it’s a very kiwi thing because I know there’s definitely some people who can be a bit prideful. But I would say as a whole, Its a very cultural thing over here in New Zealand. Not just because it’s good to be humble but I think it’s something taught into us because everyone, like everyone teases each other over here in New Zealand and if you ever talk yourself up and can’t follow through with your boasting then your not going to hear the end of it for a long time. And so it’s easier to talk about yourself very humbly and let your actions speak for themself. Cos imagine saying oh yeah I did all of this Im so awesome and then it comes out later that someone else did most of the work well your never going to hear the end of it. But it’s not just coming from a selfish motive it’s also coming from a kind motive because it feels really nice to give others credit. So it helps both of you. To give everyone the credit and let the actions speak for themselves. That’s just how it goes. Unwarented pride is a very negative trait over here in New Zealand.
It’s even more respectful because in all honesty the script was not very good. He’s just so damned nice that he wanted to lift them up regardless.
The amount of love I have for Taika Waititi is bigger than Antwan's ego
This guy is crazy, he needs to direct ALL comedies! Thor Ragnarok was sick!
to this day, that is my one of my top fav Marvel movies
Not just comedy the emotional part is awsome to
Taika is quickly becoming one of my favorite people in media.
That kick up attempt in the movie caught me off guard and had me rolling 🤣😂
I love this guy Taika, he was crazy in Free Guy, he literally made me laugh everytime he was on screen
Should check out Jojo Rabbit then if you haven’t already
He was the worst part of the movie. LOL Everything was cringy and its like a shitty knockoff Tiktok generation version of JP from Grandma's Boy.
Lol hes is much crazier in jojo rabbit. This was 30 percent of his true power.
Make sure you also watch "what we do in the shadows! my favorite by him. brilliant.
Nah he was weak in this film, nothing compared to him as Korg or in what we do in the shadows
Riffing over something already written, as opposed to "making stuff up". Amazing way to look at it.
Taika is a genius and surprisingly humble for someone so talented. Love his movies.
Taika was my favourite part in this film, his ridiculousness in an already absurd movie contrasted really well with the main guy who worked with him, just trying to give a rational opinion on things. The way he says Bro is brilliant. Maybe it was just hearing a kiwi talking to americans like that, felt like real life merging with Hollywood for a moment
I love that Taika Waititi. He can really Ryan Reynolds up a place.
Yeah. He and Ryan really Ryan Reynolds up Green Lantern. :D
Nope he can’t
That might be why he and Ryan get along so well
This guy is a human version of fireworks.
"Don't worry, it's okay" "IT'S NOT OKAY, I'M NOT GONNA GET IT!! DX" XD
That's the Thor Ragnarok Director right there
Also JOJO RABBIT
Imagine if he did a deadpool film 😭😂
He saved the Thor trilogy, the first 2 movies were absolute TRASH
And korg
He's a vampire
His acting were phenomenal and I loved the energy he brought to the movie! However I don't think he suits being a bad guy he's just so loveable!! ❤️
Taika is literally one of the funniest people alive.
The opening to Thor Ragnarok where Thor is just riffing is literally Taika thoughts
_"Kentucky Fried Chicken, Albuquerque Boiled Turkey"_ *TAIKA WAITITI*
Jim Carrey and Taika Watiti ...... in the same movie (Sonic the hedgehog 2 or Free Guy 2) ...... make it happen! World of improvisation will hit the nuclear button.
I sadly didn’t hear of him before free guy, but i’m so glad i eventually did. He is so funny and an all around genius
I have been absolutely in love with Taika ever since 'Hunt For The Wilderpeople' and it makes me so happy to see him more in the spotlight now cuz he is truly amazing
If Shawn Levy going to direct Deadpool 3, Korg would be in it 😆
i love his style
Taika is a legend
Hey. That's me sitting on the exercise ball at 1:02 in.
Yo thats so cool!
very nice
how much did they pay you to be an extra?
@@itsZubei you believe? If it was you you'd know exactly how much you got paid.
@@itsZubei if its for fun then the money is not important :) Its great you had fun.
Antwan is my new spirit animal.
Ngl, he made alot of the scenes in the film really good. Pretty much all his scenes in the movie.
God, I love this man....
Honor & Respect
Taika W. 's a so wild , true and authentic person , about all when he acts coz he does not act actually , that why we love him so much
Oscar winning writer ladies and gentleman
Taika is loving villain character 😉
I love the antwan character hes not really a bad guy he just has priorities, something im sure alot of people can relate too.
He still stole from keys and Millie though
To bad he didn't destroy AI
He kinda stole their work. No?
He called people nerds
he had to steal their work! it was in the script
I simply cannot fathom someone watching this video and not thinking this guys is the most obnoxious thing to happen to Hollywood in a while
Which makes me think that those comments complimenting him were fake.
It sounds like people are shitting on him just because of his kiwi accent. I bet if he sounded more American they wouldn't be criticizing him the way they're doing now because I've seen people play roles similar to this but were praised for it even though they were basically doing the same thing but with a different accent.
straight up bro
Kiwi just makes it better
I like his accent
Accent? Im not english myself lol, so I dont care. But to be honest, he's the only thing I didn't like in the movie. I have nothing against him, I dont know him at all. I just didn't like his character. Probably his improv. was too much for me, no one act like that IRL, he made me lost my immersion everytime Its just crazy how people always think negative is racism or sexism every fucking time, god!
@@XxKidnoffxX Your entitled to your opinion and I respect that everyone can’t agree all the time and I wish people would realise this but it’s the internet what else can I say
Love Taika! He's just a big kid!:)
ANTMAN!!! with upside down W
taika just doing side quests now
Rita is so lucky🤣
He should be in pirates of carribean
I like the part when he said "1, 2, 3 GET BACK TO WORK"
Lol did he basically make Raganarok with everyone ad libbing their way through the sccenes.
Actor, writer and a director 😮😮😮😮
Taika is a very guy!
Talented
I want his coat
Taika is writer director actor.. that is why
Cut thats in the movie 😂😂😂😂
IS A GUD MSKING OFF THE MOVIE
Taika sounds like New Zealand Robin Williams
That’s NEW ZEALAND BABY
We all know Deadpool 3 needs to be directed by Taika
TW could do a really good Tony Stark
Nah
I still have no idea what this film is about at all
Taika Waititi and James Gunn will save Hollywood movies.
Nope
He sound like mr bean
I look at him and think someone has done a face fake with Robert Downey Jr.
Vampire got citizenship and became billionaire...??? 🤔
Funny as hell, humble as fuck, no wonder Tessa Thompson and Rita Ora wanna jump his bones at the same time.
If only Joey did what he did at the end...
Waititi amp.
Did you know that Taika Waititi's character in Free Guy 'Antwan' is one letter away from being 'Antman'. Taika Waititi is the director of the third sequel of the Thor series Thor Ragnarok
Did you know that interesting is only 11 letters away from being pointless? It makes you think, doesn't it?
Fun fact, he was green lantern’s roomate
he outperformed ryan
Bitcoin +Dogecoin buy.
Was I the only one that didn’t like this character?
Actually everyone
I hated him in Free Guy, i desired to kick him in the face after just 2 minutes
I love Taika Waititi as an actor and director. With that said this role wasn't good. This was a role for Adam Sandler or someone else who doesn't try.
I want to share with you the truth and life. All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). God is holy and the punishment for sin is Hell. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 6:23). Jesus Christ is the way, the truth and the life (John 14:6). He died on the cross and rose again on the third day for us all. Repent of your sins, believe in Jesus Christ and accept Him into your heart and follow Him
It wasn't that good, I could tell it was improv when i was watching the movie
Yeah, he wasn't good in it & the film was kinda lame...
He stole the show
Overacting
The movie is good, but not great. The Matrix is great.
That character was irritating and one of many things wrong with this overhyped movie. Taika is a good director and a decent writer but just because of that this is not great acting. The movie was to cute and many times destroyed its own jokes by not timing them well. The beginning of the movie is great though and Ryan is good as always.
It was pretty much Ready Player One for the Fortnite generation...
Respecfully, everything bad you said about taika was objectively wrong
@@jdggaming5764 Learn the difference between opinions and "objectively". Then come back.
@@hurmur9528 it... it was a joke
Decent writer . Ummm the awards he has won from his work… he is amazing director. He is a good actor if you haven’t seen his other movies I suggest you watch them….
So first let me say that Taika is fantastic, witty, creative and rather wonderful not to mention a great director and comedian … .., BUT he was totally wasted in Free Guy, a film that whilst enjoyable was also pretty forgettable, predictable and somewhat bland. The basic concept was solid and unlike the dreadful Ready Player One at least reigned back on the incessant Easter eggs, references and in jokes. But otherwise it was just adequate at best with occasionally janky CGI, a surprising absence of actual funny jokes and a lifeless lay directed mishmash of The Truman Show and They Live (both of which are vastly superior) Even Ryan Reynolds seemed to be phoning things in with his usual schtick tailored for a 12 certificate but Taika had too little screen time and ultimately underdelivered as a dull, occasionally annoying and unfunny “villain” totally lacking his usual energetic, sharp witted style and character. Much like the movie itself … harmless but totally forgettable.
He really seems like a nice guy but his humour just isn't my cup of tea.
Its good that you aren't shitting on people who like it, lol everyone's realm of humour is just at different levels in different areas and we should all appreciate that
@@DaveKatague Yeah, who am I to judge other people's preferred taste of humour? He makes a lot of people laugh and that's a great thing.
He ruined the movie. If you can’t take the antagonist seriously, what’s the point?
The cancer joke in this film is awful
which line is it
@@warlock1816 the inoperable line
@Adam Ratman yeah
his character was one of the low points of the movie
I massively agree ! I found myself hating every scene he was in the director clearly gave him too much freedom, it was a really awful performance and understand his character is unlikable it just wasn't well acted at all in comparison to someone like Ryan and definitely Jodie Comer. Great film maker but like you said a real low point scenes with him.
highly subjective and im not a fan of this ceo character, but i think its a very good team in making movies and we are lucky that they work together for more marvel movies.
@@U-inverse369 I didn't say he couldn't make movies he's made some great films his performance was just hard to watch.
This movie os terrible
Too overconfident as compared to his talent ..
He was awful in it....
He was literally the most unbearable character in a otherwise decent film
That’s the whole point, he was supposed to be an ass.
I love Taika but goddamn he was the worse thing in the movie.
a true ea/activision ceo
Jup I agree. I like him very much but in this movie his overacting was too much...
@@rattenherz_ I thought it was perfect. He plays the obnoxious CEO to a T
Yes, love his work but not on this one. Cringey AF.
it was hard to tell if it was him or his character that was annoying. But he was defenitly the low point of the otherwise cringefesty mediocre movie.
I like his movies but he was cringey and awful in free guy
I liked his performance really annoying
Easily the worst part about the film
Taika got ONE THING WRONG about Evil doods who run buisnesses. THEY DO NOT LIE! they tell half truths people believe are one thing but actually are another. that makes this movie stupid at times. IF he played him more like the dood from ready player one or DINGIGER cos remember he isn't top of the food chain his customers are so acting like a prick will have people not wanting to work for you especially in the gaming industry, It would of been better to play down the character with the flamboyance and make it like he's Buddy buddy with everyone trying to get their ideas then STEAL THEM. (which would of been a lot better) instead he has a office full of minions who are working for him why? they all look like they would abort babies and sell their grans kidneys to be fair so i don't feel sorry for the staff at all they even made a blue shirt guy 2.0 like YES O MASTER WHO PAYS OUR MINIMUM WAGES.
To all wanna-be-actors. This is not what you are payed to do. Filming days are very expensive and you don’t wanna waste that money. Unless you are already someone like Taika, who was hired for personality.
was the most lamest actor on the show spoiled the movie.
Agreed.
He's about as funny as toothache, the best thing he ever did was go to the States. We've had to put up with his lame attention seeking for years in New Zealand.
Anyone reading this please know...DMF is in the minority when it comes to kiwis who don't like Taika...the majority of us are stoked to have the likes of him, Sam Neil, Cliff Curtis, Temuera Morrison, Jane Campion, Niki Caro, etc...representing NZ on the world cinematic stage! He's just got cavities because he's been sipping that sickly sweet haterade.
I don't like this guy... He has this weird quality about him that was present in my ex wife. She was as crazy and nuts as they come... With an aura of "Look at me" around her... Yes, she was a Leo.
This dude is annoying as hell this character is a huge rip-off of the over-the-top character from grandmas boy. Ad-libbing in his case is actually a lack of acting skill whatsoever.
the most overrated and pretentious and tacky and self-indulgent 'director/writer' out there.
