Crown Knot for Making a Cargo Net or Climbing Net
Crown Knot for Making a Cargo Net or Climbing Net
In this short video I demonstrate how to use a two strand crown knot or Japanese Crown Knot to make a cargo net. Sadly in this demonstration I do not show the full making of a rope cargo net, but you will get a good idea on how the cargo knot is made.

It's a great page! Thank you!
Wow. So to create a full size net do you need much longer lengths of rope, or are you adding lengths for each grid?
So do these ropes come long enough to, let’s say, cover a load going to the dump in my truck? Or, do you need to tie pieces of rope together to get the desired size? And once the cargo net is completed, how is it attached to the vehicle?Perhaps with carabiners? Or is there a better way? The most trouble I had with store bought cargo nets was untangling them. Any suggestions to avoid that?
I hope you have a chance to answer some of my questions, because I know there’s gonna be more lol. How long are the cords and what kind of cords are they? I guess instead a barrage of question, I’ll watch your other videos in the description. Probably best. Oh yeah, I have to thank you again for your video on jug knots. If I hadn’t found you, I would’ve had to purchase them. The first few took some time, but once I got the hang of it, it was taking me 40 seconds to make one and before I knew it, I had 30 of them. I used a few different materials. The two that I found were actually parts for making parrot toys. One was a spool of leather and the other was plastic string for stringing parrot toys. I used them for the first time and they worked fantastically. The only thing I’d like to do different next time is put soft material around the handle so when I pick up four one gallon jugs of water at the same time, the cord/leather won’t dig into my hand. Excellent video to follow. Now I hope the cargo net goes as planned. Tytyty
This is the true purpose of KZhead.

@@KnottingKnotsI was a sailor and I was always fascinated by the work done by the boatswain mates.
I am an ex stoker and in my RN days I never even thought about knots. Would love to spend some time at the training school where they teach knots.
While I 100% agree with you, I wish folks under the age of 20 realized this... Most people waste KZhead and only use it for entertainment 🤦🏽♂️
Love the elegance of this. Only one "pull through" for an entire knot.

Thank you for this tutorial. I tried to learn this knot a few years ago and was never able to grasp it. The way you demonstrate it made so much more sense to me and now I have it! Seeing it tied the same way 4 times also helped. The cargo net idea is cool too. Thank you very much! I find your channel very helpful.

Thank you dear friend ! I must say that for some time I was looking for a knot to make an elastic cargo net for use on a motorcycle. They exist for sale, but I wanted to make it and thanks to you I was able to do it. And I must also say that the generosity of sharing knowledge or democratizing knowledge is the best thing that can happen. Therefore with these brief words I give my most sincere thanks to you dear friend for providing everyone with this knot that is very useful for the original purpose but also to use with elastic rope as I did. Sincerely .
Many thanks for your kind comment Victor. You may also be interested in this blog post on the cargo net: igkt-solent.co.uk/cargo-net/
Very good this knot will be a great asset for me
This is more along the lines of what I thought I was going to sit down and do. I had made a hoop with evenly spaced alpine butterfly knots... and that's when my inspiration seemed to surpass my intellect lol. But it would make a good skeleton for this crown knot pattern, it seems. Awesome. Thank you, sir!

Looking forward to seeing how to complete this as I have an elastic cargo net, forward, in my boat (under my bow) that I use for general storage, that has deteriorated over time with sun and salt water. I should be able to get thick enough venetian blind cord for the job, so bring on part 2 please! Warmest Regards. Garry Thomas

You might prefer to use parachute cord which is fairly inexpensive and ready available. It'd be stronger and likely last longer.
Hi, I just wanted to thank you for this helpful video. I managed to add a bespoke climbing net to the end of a climbing frame for my son by following your instructions. It's not perfect, but very servicable and son is enjoying it, so job done. Thanks again. Jim
Even if not perfect, your son will remember forever that you made him that!!! Thanks for taking the time to view and also make a comment, very much appreciated.
Thank you, that's really helpfully illustrated and good step by step instruction. Thanks again!
Thank you greatly. Is there a formula for how much extra rope is used for each knot? Obviously, it's related to the diameter of the rope. This could help ppl like myself to know how much rope is needed per row of knots.
I think that this post on Cargo Nets may assist you: igkt-solent.co.uk/cargo-net/ Thanks for taking the time to view and also make a comment, very much appreciated.
@@KnottingKnots well, this was great! I don't really know how to knot, but after this video i'm planning on making a cargo net for my jeep. I thought about making a cargo net because i need one, but none of the options seemed good. Either the rope was flimsy and really wide or the net was sturdy, but too small to be useful. I decided on 1/4" shock cord. Lol. Hopefully this isn't too difficult. Do you have a suggestion on which kind of knot to use on the perimeter of the cargo net?
Brilliant! this is exactly what I need. I was going to 3-D print a connector instead of the knot but i prefer the knot. thank you . cheers brother! (with appreciation from near Baltimore, Maryland USA)

If you plan to make a large one (30'x 12') with a large grid (3'x3' maybe) I'm picturing laying it out on the ground. Using stakes or something around the perimeter each point where the rope would hit the outside edge and turn to go back the other direction. So other than the math to figure out the best division of a 30x12 space is AND the shrinkage that each knot will make on the length and width, I think it goes like this, one rope is laid down back and forth for the width without crossing it's self. The second rope would be laid down over the first, back and forth, on top of the first, also without crossing it's self. I think I would use stakes along the edge, 3 foot apart in this case. I'm describing a square turn around for now so the rope would turn left at the first stake and left again at the next stake 3 foot on, making a square turn-around to go back the direction it came from. Then at the end run a perimeter rope in and out of the outer edge, of the outer squares, pulling them into a square with one pointed outside edge, I think. Then I think you could secure to that free floating outer rope anywhere and it should distribute the stress to all the squares around it, right? I really need this to work the first time as I'm essentially homeless, living in a rotting RV. Every dime I get goes to more tarps to cover the roof. This might take care of things until the roof totally falls in. I think I have 2 or 3 years IF I can keep it dry. I live in an EXTREMELY windy place, but I'm stuck here, stuck in this situation, and stuck in this cycle of fixing something that should be burned to the ground. I have a lot of spring time storms to get through here in tornado alley. I think I'll try a cargo net to hold the tarps down from the outside instead of attaching to the tarp. Does this layout method sound like how you're supposed to do it? I'm terrible with knots so this will be a tangled, aggravating challenge lol...but, a lot of things are like that.
Thanks for teaching me how to do this. I really appreciate it! Greetings from Cancun, Mexico.
Did you hold up to recent hurricane?
knot bad lol thanks I really appreciate this and I will look forward to future videos . I make bracelets and have some rigging experience

I'm not finding much under "crown knot" except for the decorative end of rope knot. I'd be curious to hear any comparison of this to the carrick bend in usage. I like that this knot keeps the down lines down and the cross lines horizontal. Is it as strong? Slip? Weakens rope more, etc... ?
I really cannot believe, as you say, there is so very little information out there. Yes, the Carrick bend was certainly used for making cargo nets. I have to say that my main reason for choosing this knot was that I could film it easily within my limited studio. If anybody else has information about cargo nets I would love to hear. Thanks for taking the time to view and also make a comment, very much appreciated. Are you more of a practical or decorative knotter?
Very clear steps . Thank you very much.
Think I have seen this knot described as the Japanese Square knot also.. Great Video Johnny as always :)
Same as how we used to make those friendship bracelets back in the 70s lol, Cool
There’s a reason a lot of that friendship bracelet stuff overlaps with bracelets worn during the heyday of privateers in the 18th century, knot tying has its purpose be it nautical or aesthetic or both. Yo, I’m a younger generation but I really always dug being taught by the folks how to do those bracelets, so I guess what I mean to say: spread your cool style of art
Good video. Repetition is the best step in teaching. One watch and done. On to the next video! Cheers
Thanks so much for this! I’m gonna use it to make a nice climbing net for my birds to play on

What type or weave of rope is the most beneficial for interlocking and not unraveling? Great video, well spoken.
Anxious to see the full video on making the net. My interest now is how you would finish the perimeter or do you just leave the loops alone
There is so little information out there, I am finding this rather difficult to establish. If it were a three ply rope, you could I suppose splice the ends into the perimeter of a rope going around? Very nice. I've been wanting to get a good cargo net for my dump trailer. The bed size is 6' wide by 12' long. I can buy enough para cord for way less than half the cost of a comparable store bought net. It'll give me something to do rather than watch tv all evening in the winter. Those $25.00 bungee cord nets don't inspire me with a lot of confidence, and the heavier nets that I would prefer are in the $300 dollar range so maybe I'll try making my own. Thanks for the information.

So if I'm understanding you correctly, I just start with two long pieces of rope and form loops with just THOSE 2 pieces the whole time? I've tried this before, but had several pieces of rope. Needless to say, it was not a "nailed it" situation. LOL. Nice tut. I could listen to you talk all day!

I’m very interested in learning how to complete a rectangular cargo net for covering my loads to the dump. Since the video showed the first steps, you said there was a video in the description that showed beginning to end. Sadly, I was unable to find that video and was hoping you could direct me to it. Since I’ve never attempted such a project, obviously I need the complete training video as well as the length of netting I would need to purchase for a net covering the bed of my Tacoma long bed truck. In addition, I don’t have a clue how to finish the net off nor what hardware I’d need to tie it down securely. Also, what is the name of the material you use to construct the net? As you can see, I am a beginner, and I need a lot of help and direction. Thank you.
Maybe take a look at making half a Purse Net, as doing this will give you a triangular shaped net. This is very easy looking. I was a bit surprised, looking at the knot initially I would've guessed that the way you put this together is by making a vertical loop and then putting the other rope through that loop to form the same vertical loop in the other direction, just that the loops interlock. Do you not want to mirror the next loop to create straight lines instead of slightly angled due to always going to one side on the loops? Or does it not matter?

I would love to build a cargo net for the grandkids to play on on their jungle gym.
I have an 8'x10' dump wagon that I use quite often. When I haul brush and the sort, the load must be covered in the county that I live in, obviously to prevent debris from littering the road, and creating a hazard from potential flying material on the roadway. I have priced some cargo nets, and the ones I looked at, that are big enough to cover the load's height, plus the length and width of my trailer are pretty pricey. I purchased two 100' rolls of 3/8" braided polyester rope to make my own cargo net. Your video is very helpful in tying the knots. I take it that you start in a corner, and work your way towards the other corners? I am thinking that when you get to the width you want, you turn the loops back the other way? Am I thinking correctly? Great video and thanks again.
I really wish that I had done a full net, but you can see more information here: igkt-solent.co.uk/cargo-net/ Thanks for taking the time to view and also make a comment, very much appreciated.
