Net Making - Fishing Net - How To Make Your Own Fishing Net
In this video I show you how to make your own fishing net. I will demonstrate how to load a netting needle and then how to determine the depth of the fishing net. Once the depth of the net has been established, the net is then made by adding more netting to the desired length.

I had to stop watching due to how annoying your accent is.
I'm 75 years old and this brought back memories from childhood. it was always the little ones job to load the needles.pop used to buy pre made nets ,the needles were used to sew the net to the larger cords that held the corks on one cord and the lead on the other heavy cord and this creates the gill nets. we also made our lead weights. Thanks for the trip back to my island home.
I really do love the fact that many knots or knotting projects, bring back fond memories! Thanks for taking the time to view and also make a comment, very much appreciated.
Thank you so much. Unfortunally my father passed away before pass it on this native family tradition for me, he was the last of a kind. Fortunaly KZhead have people like you!!! I'll make my first net now.
I'm hear for that exact same reason, I inherited my dads house and for year and years when painting round the door frame in the kitchen I was reminded of him netting with his needle and mesh board by a single screw in the top of the door frame
So sorry about your loss. My mom and Dad passed in 2011. I remember he would weave turtle baskets. It’s so bad they have to leave us but that’s just the way it is. Hope they are in a better place. If I get this down I’m going to teach my grandsons so maybe they can keep it going and not let it die out like so many other things. Good luck netting.
Never take em for granted. Don't be like me. Ask the questions now learn about your bloodline! Learn it and carry it on! That's the one thing I regret in life is not asking my grandparents those questions and not spending enough time with them. Cherish every eternal moment because it's the only real time we have, the moments.

Thank you very much for showing this. I am Fisherman and learned it, but you actually explain it better than my teachers did.^^ One step i would like to mention. If you fill the needle with yarn, do not rotate it in 360°. Rotate it 180° and than back. Othrwise it will create loops to the yarn and meshes.
Many thanks for that tip Njord, as you can tell, I am not a fisherman!! 😉 😉 😉
That could explain the twisting in my yarn ...... Thank you very much Njord
That looks like finnish style needle aka verkkokäpy (cone). There is also norwegian one too. Maybe easier to fill. Making hand net for white fish. kzhead.info/sun/aNN7fZGxrmiden0/bejne.html
That netting needle’s proper name is a “Fid” or fisherman’s fid. My father was a commercial fisherman who fished the Grand Banks and George’s Banks back in the 1940’s & 50’s. I was a kid back then when he showed me how to make & repair a net. He was so adept at it that he would only use his fingers as a gauge for his left hand with the fid in his right. Great video. Brings back old memories.
Thank you so much for renewing my memories of net making with my Dad. I am 69 years old now and have wanted to remember how to do this. Dad was a Captain on the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland, Virginia and became a Master Pilot Tugboat Captain for Humble Oil. Wow, that goes back a bit doesn't it? He stayed with the company through all the changes and retired from Exxon years back. We made hammocks, nets for fishing when that was still allowed and had great times together. Bless you. I am starting to do netting again.
I find that most projects that I do are filled with wonderful memories. When I look at an item, I still feel the warmth of the sun and I can hear my dog snoring 😉 😉 😉 You may also be interested in these other Net Making Videos, there are a few different types of nets and also knots: kzhead.info/channel/PL7nysDkNnZHelZpSk9Xi0YyztSUKgC4GA.html I do hope that you find some of these of interest.
When I was a kid a LONG time ago, an old Finnish fisherman showed me how to make nets - we made a badminton net for my mom. Then when I went to a military survival school I made a crude net and was surprised at how well it worked. Recently I started putting together a survival kit for backcountry flying, and the survival nets commercially available seem like junk to me, so I decided to make my own. The first one was a disaster. The second one was much better, but a few meshes are wonky. Hopefully the third time will be a charm. It's been fun learning. Your how-to videos were the best I could find, thank you for posting them.
Thanks for taking the time to share this information, I always love to hear about knots and cordage being used in action! I assume that "backcountry flying" is flying into/over remote locations in big countries?
@@KnottingKnots Yes, flying small planes over remote places. A survival kit is required, and a net is a required component of it.
my father and grandfather were commercial fisherman from long island new york and as a very small child my grandfather taught me how to repair the ripped areas of the net. your video made me remember the knotting process which i had long forgotten! thank you for such a great teaching video! i think i might start making some nets now as well!
As you tie you knots, you will remember days long past and also create your own memories of what was happening when you were creating something. One of my Ditty Bags that I made, reminds me of Blake my choccy Labrador: igkt-solent.co.uk/making-leather-ditty-bag/
I experimented making bio-degradable net for our garden, using jute twine, watching this clip. It was one of the most satisfying and therapeutic things I've done so thank you very much!
This is the easiest to understand demonstration i have seen. Thank you.
But still hard to do
For 55 years it baffled me how this was done let's just say I'm no longer baffled thank you for the great demonstration
well done video it brings back the days of my youth when i work on a 30 ft lobster boat off the new jersey coast usa . we lifted lobster pots on a string of 25 each. the boat captain knew where all the wrecks are. many ships where torpedoed off the coast of new jersey and delaware bay. we caught sea bass ling, tog, and a few lobster.... that was a great part of my youth . I am now 71 years old and wish i could go back in time..... thanks to your post i did..... thanks dennis from sea isle city,
Being ex Royal Navy, I always considered being a fisherman too hard. Not the work, but the damn seasickness. I just love knots, every project I do puts memories into the work. When I look at some now, I feel the heat of the sun and my dog next to me snoring.
This is the best tutorial I have ever seen! Not just for netting but every step was clear and it was easy to see what you were doing. Thanks so much for this!!

Thank you so much. I watched another fellow's video and I could tell that he was very good at making nets, but I just couldn't get my hands to match what his were able to do. This time, by watching your video a few times as I worked through each step, I now feel pretty good about making this net to catch a bunch invasive carp out of our pond.
The same way I have learnt from my father 35 years ago. You have remind me something great.
Thank you!!! I was able to make a poster sized net in a morning to create a photo collage wall! It's perfect!

Hi. Until I watched your video, i had never understood a Sheetbend Knot. Now it makes since! Thank you for taking the time to show us Landlubbers how to tie a knot. I've been doing the individual lines over a single straight line and throwing square knots in them to make a cargo net. I appreciate knowing how to actually do net-making.THANK YOU!
who ever invented this technique was a genius :D, thank you so much sir, not only for sharing your knowledge but for explaining it in the clearest and most honest and sincere way. thank you one more time :]
As a child my family used to visit other family in Maine for two weeks every year. My uncle was a lobster fisherman and I spent many days at the piers and on the boat. I always saw others repairing or making their nets, but never got curious enough to know how since I live in upstate NY, and never had the need for a net. Watching this takes me back to those younger years. I am now disabled from Diabetes and wheel chair bound, and looking for a hobby to help fill my time. I am going to give this a try, although I don't know what I will do with the netting I create. My mother used to have a net embellished with sea shells we collected and lobster balls hanging in our home for many, many years. Thank you for this tutorial.
Well thank you for telling me that!! I just love the way that knots can bring back memories or create memories. One thing that I do love about net making, is that it is relatively cheap to do. I personally use nets as hammocks to keep things stowed. Hey Jonny Debt. Your tutorials are very easy to follow. However, I prefer to use the double node you showed in another video. So far, I've made myself a fishing net curtain. Thank you so much for your help. Best regards, Ellen from Denmark
I’m a commercial fishermen and I’m now fishing with a huge nets. I’m trying to do some home work and get good at fixing the holes when they are trashed. A video on how to cut and prep the repair would be lovely

Johnny Debt no problem. In my industry the best net guys can’t speak English. Hard work long hours in the hot sun in Southern California. So the language barrier is real!
I didn't want to learn how to make nets but i couldn't stop watching and now i know. This guy is crazy good with explaining.

What a great Saturday morning! Let the dogs out and then settled to watch your video, this time with the needle and card. I am thrilled to bits and so grateful that you are understandable. I'm in Canada but all my cousins are over there with the salt water and fresh fish and learning this makes me feel closer to them and also to those who have passed on but knew how to make nets. What a victory!
I just love knots and the memories that they create............. sometimes I look at something that I did long ago and remember the warmth of the sun as I made that object. Many people also tell me how it brings back memories of a long lost relative who would make nets. Thanks for taking the time to view and also make a comment, very much appreciated.
THANKS A MILLION! This is far away the most comprehensive tutorial I ever seen on the "web".
I am a crocheter and have learned to tat. The stitch you are doing is what is used in tatting only the knots are all on one thread so they can be pushed together to make tiny loops. Tatting thread is like sewing thread and uses a shuttle that is about 3 inches long. My grandmother's is metal and has a removable bobbin. BTW I was watching to learn how to make fishnet for hair nets.
"The luxury nets of the Rich and Famous" !!!
You must be rich and famous using the internet then 😁
Thank you so much for sharing. This is something that takes a lot of practice before being able to get going, but the correct knowledge is the first very important step. Maybe the best tutorial on net making on KZhead. Best wishes.
It was great
I used to watch my father and uncle tying nets at our house in Cocoa, Florida. They would attach the top of the net to one of the steel posts in our carport and they had a shuttle that looked just like the one you were working with. Their mesh was a little finer as I recall. They were making shrimp nets for casting. Of course that was a long time ago, close to sixty years back and I haven't seen it since. We moved from Florida to Alaska when I was nine, and I developed different hunting and survival skills.
I love net making, it is so therapeutic doing it. Here in the UK they catch rabbits using the shaped purse net, they also make good hammock for stowing soft toys for kids: kzhead.info/sun/h8esicyohICBqYk/bejne.html
Today, with your help I was able to make my first net, a cargo net for my motorcycle, made of elastic cord. I viewed a lot of tutorials, but it wasn't until I found yours that I completely understood the way how to do it. Thank you very much.
That is so good to hear!!! You can probably get one cheaper, but nothing better than making your own. Thanks for taking the time to view and also make a comment, very much appreciated.
I thought your video was very good! The way u explain and show in detail was great. Also the fact that u repeated the steps several times really helps to get it stuck into the mind! Im going to give it a try!

I really like the way you demonstrate and explain how to do the netting. What would really help me out, is a clip about how to knot off at the end. By the way, I agree fully to the process - it is relaxing.
Usually when I finish, I just double up on the way that I did the previous knot.
150 yards of nylon twine and 924 knots later I finished my gill net. Thanks for the clear instructions.

I repaired nets years ago as kid but have long since forgotten how to tie them .. so nice refresher; thanks. One thing you dont explain though is what to do when you run out of line and need to refill the needle and tie the new line in... would be good to know as I may soon need to tie a net thats 300-500mm deep but 20 mtrs long; not for fishing but to drag an invasive weed out of a lake.
My dad was a commercial fisherman during the 50's and 60's. I remember watching him make his nets as a little girl. I'm not sure of the name of the nets he would make but knew they were long and he used metals hoops. I'd love to learn how he made them but sadly he passed before he could teach me.
............ and now you can learn here how to make them. Once you have learnt the basic technique, just start making a net. As you make the net, you will feel the warmth of the sun, and your mind will wonder and take you back to those days!! Additionally, you will also create new memories with those who are watching you do this. Learn it and enjoy it 😉 😉 😉
Even though I'm just learning, your vids are awesome. Appreciate the reps. Lookin for the rest of completing 550 cord net. I was following along & I just can't figure out how to make the next row, but I keep trying.👍 Thanx too.

Thank God I found this tutorial 😭 I'm currently working on making my own nets out various materials as part of ongoing work for my fine art degree and this has been the clearest tutorial so far! I get confused a lot trying to watch how-to videos but this has really helped me out and given me the motivation to just get stuck in and pass the time, thank you a lot :)

When loading your needle, put 2 turns around the pin and it will hold without you having to pinch it with your fingers. It'll also hold when your needle is nearly empty. If you don't have a gauging board, you can just use your fingers, 3 fingers is a good mesh size, but you can use 4. If you're using your fingers for gauging you can work from right to left by putting the needle DOWN through the mesh on the left, then twisting the mesh between finger and thumb before you make your sheet bend knot. Incidentally, I thought when I was watching your video, that it would be good to show how to tie the sheet bend knot before going on to the net making part :) I hope some of this helps. All the best, J

Ive been tying knots for a while now and this is by far the best net making tutorial I’ve seen yet on the web. Thank you very much for the video! I was originally taught how to tie a net from an Argentine fisherman, but I had forgotten how he did it. Thank you for making a video that teaches it the way my old friend did it! Great tutorial.
Thanks for taking the time to share this information, isn't it great when something brings back memories from the distant past. I sometimes look at some of my knotting projects (especially in Winter) and I remember the warmth of a sunny day as it was being created. Funny how you forget the pain in your fingers, or if using tarred line, how it melted all over your hands. Cheers for sharing Jake.

@A Hera ok, thanks for the opinion ;)
Thank you for such a helpful video for netting.
Thank you. 😊 Brought back memories of weaving fish casting nets my Father taught my brother and me when we were little. We were taught the needle was called a shuttle and to create size of the net openings was the gauge
....depending on the size of the fish the gauge varied in size and the size of the fishing monofilament. There is a set of extra loops or eyes added at certain points to increase the size of the casting net. Tedious, but my brother and I made a lot of mistakes that my Father corrected. I learned to weave when I was 10 years old. 65 years ago....! Brought back memories of my Father.
Whenever I look at my netting, I think of the sunshine and my dog laying next to me as I made the nets. Thanks for taking the time to view and also make a comment, very much appreciated.

He did a great job at explaining this. If you don't have a measuring tool, your fingers work great. That's what we normally use on the boat.
Yes, when you first did it that way, did it rip your fingers to shreds?

Cool way to teach net making, its called a breading needle on trawlers. never seen it done with the little board before, cute trick for beginners on the internet to learn with but would soon have gone over the rail in the middle of the night in the middle of a gale in the middle of the English channel when the nets got rumpy, not a bad idea for a novice though.
Hello Andrew, as soon as you mentioned the word trawler, I felt seasick!! I have 18 years in the RN and the longer I was in the sicker I got. Thanks for taking the time to share that information, always good to hear how things are used in real life. Are you off to fight the French today? ;-)
How do ya'll gauge the netting and keep it all together?
Great. I intend making a long net for rabbiting and this is the best vid I've found so far for net making (even if its not for rabbits).
For rabbiting you can make a Purse Net: igkt-solent.co.uk/net-making-purse-net/
Thank you so much. Never made a net before, but I needed one for my garden to deter cats. Your explanation is clear which follows the video, and made it less daunting to try. I am already at my second layer of loops (length) and should have my net ready in a few hours. Oh I should add, I do not have any of the needles, or board but I can easily replace the needles with a slim stick and just cut the desired width from a hard cover to replace the board. All is good, anyone can start to do immediately. Many thanks again.

Thanks for taking the time to view and also make a comment, very much appreciated. Are you more of a practical or decorative knotter?
Great skills on fish net.guides and easily to understand what he did. Thank you very much for this video on you-tube.
Johnny, thank you so much for showing us how to do this net. My dad showed me how to tie one when i was about 12 years old but I didn't keep up with the skill and therefore, I lost it. He had a wooden needle and wooden gauge for the size of the holes. The gauge was oval shaped and about 4 inches long. I am going to build a needle and gauge and start tying nets just so I can pass it on to my grand kids. Thanks again.
Yes, do make your own needles!!! You may also be interested in this post I did. If you make the Purse Net, your kids can use it as a hammock to store soft toys or other stuff. igkt-solent.co.uk/net-making-beginners/
Thanks for the tutorial. It is very simple and easy to learn within minutes
Good explanation. Thank you so much.
Beautifully demonstrated... May I know what kind of lines are suitable for creating nets?
OK, I will admit that I am no fishing expert, but I find that thin line that is not too slippery and holds a good knot is best. If you take a look at this page, there is a link to the line that I used: igkt-solent.co.uk/net-making-beginners/
I've always wondered how they get the netting even. Thank you. You are a good teacher.

Great video thank you! I checked out other videos and they just didn’t do it for me like this one did!
Now you gotta make one and show me the fish??
Next step, Inter Net .
Mmm, for me black fishnets would be the next step..... not the fishing type!!! Just dreaming.
Watching it again because I ordered a netting needle some time ago, haven't yet received it, and wanted a refresher on how to do it. Thanks again!
That is so annoying, having to wait for a delivery!!! I love net making, just so relaxing and the end result is lovely to look at and handle.
You can get a set of 7 plastic needles online for 10 us dollars
Thank you! This was a wonderful tutorial and I went right ahead and made a small net of my own. Now I'm just wondering wether or not the net needs to be secured at the end to keep it from falling apart.

Johnny Debt please show
Hey Johnny i really enjoyed your video, educational plus i found your accent accent makes for a quite enjoyable narration, thanks so much, i think I'll try to create my meeting needle from scratch ass I'm a bit of a survivalist myself, but thanks for posting, I'll be subscribing so keep it up please
Lesson learned never type the word "fishnet", instead use "fishing net"
Much appreciated instructional video. I've wanted to know how to do this for years, possibly decades. I'll be camped out on your channel's playlist for quite some time, I'm sure. On the subject of time: I suggest you re-issue your videos in a 'Cole's Notes' form -- the minimum-sufficient set of instructions, for quick review or for quick learners, in an appropriately-named, identically-thumbnailed video accessed in the appropriate playlist. You might choose to pretend (or append) some text signifier to distinguish the long form from the short e.g." - Close Notes". On the subject of technique and tools: it occurs to me that a useful addition to netting kit would be one or more rings, worn on the left thumb and/or forefinger, made of silicone rubber and sporting a chromed conical stud above a waist… In profile, an appropriate stud or 'bollard' might look like this: /\ /. \ ) ( - - - - (The stud, above, would sit on the ring, which would be here…). The cord, during the 'large loop around' step, would pass around the waist of the stud and remain there until the cord, having been passed 'under-under-over', is drawn tighter -- at which point the silicone ring flexes, the stud tilts, and the cord on the waist is released…
Have you yet covered repairing a net?
No, not yet. I have just done a video on the round net and that was a bit of a nightmare at the beginning. I have now added your suggestion to my to-do list.
Thank you I found your video looking for lace netting tutorials your explanation was the best thank you,I appreciate it so much .I'm just using a bit of cardboard and a blunt needle ,maybe I will make a type of spool needle in time ,I suppose this is where giving and needlework meet😊its so useful not only for fishing, but, bags hammocks hair nets, plant hangers etc
Yes, you can make your own netting needles, here is one I made, just need a tidy: yt3.ggpht.com/shg1QfyjuVpU0akUOVMif746M8HnQE_sy4VFRr6ckZvgCmRCqiJwdzrAodhzlceyeF4eLZ_0D1EdNOI=s800-c-fcrop64=1,00000000ffffffff-nd

Why am I having so much trouble getting the knot so that it is above and not a slip knot?. Every time I do a knot I THINK it is ABOVE but when I check - it slips.
I always had that problem, try the method shown in this video, more secure method of tying: kzhead.info/sun/h8esicyohICBqYk/bejne.html
Thanks so much John! I was having the same problem and this more secure method really made everything a lot easier, especially with larger nets!
It is so annoying when the knot becomes a slipknot. I am glad that I was able to help. Thanks for taking the time to view and also make a comment, very much appreciated. Are you more of a practical or decorative knotter?
In one motion, pull in an arc to the side and then down, all in one movement.
I know this video is some years old now but still reaching people who want to make nets, I have made some ferreting purse nets and now on a mission for making long nets for my self , this is just what I need to make them , the only thing I’m not sure about is the mesh knots as they are just a simple knot really nothing more, purse nets have a second sinch knot with the first knot on each mesh to secure from slipping, so my knots will have the sinch knot on my meshes as well just to be extra sure they won’t slip. Great video thank you as it’s helped many make nets for sure , thanks again.👍
I have a video in this video that shows the knots that I personally use: kzhead.info/sun/bJWmetV_gJpjmYk/bejne.htmlsi=9FgpkZBvGXtO1jf7 If I worry about the knot slipping, I use the double knot method. Thanks for taking the time to view and also make a comment, very much appreciated.
