Net Making - Fishing Net - How To Make Your Own Fishing Net
In this video I show you how to make your own fishing net. I will demonstrate how to load a netting needle and then how to determine the depth of the fishing net. Once the depth of the net has been established, the net is then made by adding more netting to the desired length.

  • I'm 75 years old and this brought back memories from childhood. it was always the little ones job to load the needles.pop used to buy pre made nets ,the needles were used to sew the net to the larger cords that held the corks on one cord and the lead on the other heavy cord and this creates the gill nets. we also made our lead weights. Thanks for the trip back to my island home.

    • So sorry about your loss. My mom and Dad passed in 2011. I remember he would weave turtle baskets. It’s so bad they have to leave us but that’s just the way it is. Hope they are in a better place. If I get this down I’m going to teach my grandsons so maybe they can keep it going and not let it die out like so many other things. Good luck netting.

  • Thank you very much for showing this. I am Fisherman and learned it, but you actually explain it better than my teachers did.^^ One step i would like to mention. If you fill the needle with yarn, do not rotate it in 360°. Rotate it 180° and than back. Othrwise it will create loops to the yarn and meshes.

  • That netting needle’s proper name is a “Fid” or fisherman’s fid. My father was a commercial fisherman who fished the Grand Banks and George’s Banks back in the 1940’s & 50’s. I was a kid back then when he showed me how to make & repair a net. He was so adept at it that he would only use his fingers as a gauge for his left hand with the fid in his right. Great video. Brings back old memories.

  • Thank you so much for renewing my memories of net making with my Dad. I am 69 years old now and have wanted to remember how to do this. Dad was a Captain on the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland, Virginia and became a Master Pilot Tugboat Captain for Humble Oil. Wow, that goes back a bit doesn't it? He stayed with the company through all the changes and retired from Exxon years back. We made hammocks, nets for fishing when that was still allowed and had great times together. Bless you. I am starting to do netting again.

  • When I was a kid a LONG time ago, an old Finnish fisherman showed me how to make nets - we made a badminton net for my mom. Then when I went to a military survival school I made a crude net and was surprised at how well it worked. Recently I started putting together a survival kit for backcountry flying, and the survival nets commercially available seem like junk to me, so I decided to make my own. The first one was a disaster. The second one was much better, but a few meshes are wonky. Hopefully the third time will be a charm. It's been fun learning. Your how-to videos were the best I could find, thank you for posting them.

  • As a child my family used to visit other family in Maine for two weeks every year. My uncle was a lobster fisherman and I spent many days at the piers and on the boat. I always saw others repairing or making their nets, but never got curious enough to know how since I live in upstate NY, and never had the need for a net. Watching this takes me back to those younger years. I am now disabled from Diabetes and wheel chair bound, and looking for a hobby to help fill my time. I am going to give this a try, although I don't know what I will do with the netting I create. My mother used to have a net embellished with sea shells we collected and lobster balls hanging in our home for many, many years. Thank you for this tutorial.

Tatting thread is like sewing thread and uses a shuttle that is about 3 inches long. My grandmother's is metal and has a removable bobbin. BTW I was watching to learn how to make fishnet for hair nets.

They would attach the top of the net to one of the steel posts in our carport and they had a shuttle that looked just like the one you were working with. Their mesh was a little finer as I recall. They were making shrimp nets for casting. Of course that was a long time ago, close to sixty years back and I haven't seen it since. We moved from Florida to Alaska when I was nine, and I developed different hunting and survival skills.

  • When loading your needle, put 2 turns around the pin and it will hold without you having to pinch it with your fingers. It'll also hold when your needle is nearly empty. If you don't have a gauging board, you can just use your fingers, 3 fingers is a good mesh size, but you can use 4. If you're using your fingers for gauging you can work from right to left by putting the needle DOWN through the mesh on the left, then twisting the mesh between finger and thumb before you make your sheet bend knot. Incidentally, I thought when I was watching your video, that it would be good to show how to tie the sheet bend knot before going on to the net making part :) I hope some of this helps. All the best, J

I sometimes look at some of my knotting projects (especially in Winter) and I remember the warmth of a sunny day as it was being created. Funny how you forget the pain in your fingers, or if using tarred line, how it melted all over your hands. Cheers for sharing Jake.

  • Thank you. 😊 Brought back memories of weaving fish casting nets my Father taught my brother and me when we were little. We were taught the needle was called a shuttle and to create size of the net openings was the gauge

    @reel4fish@reel4fish2 жыл бұрын
    • ....depending on the size of the fish the gauge varied in size and the size of the fishing monofilament. There is a set of extra loops or eyes added at certain points to increase the size of the casting net. Tedious, but my brother and I made a lot of mistakes that my Father corrected. I learned to weave when I was 10 years old. 65 years ago....! Brought back memories of my Father.

  • Cool way to teach net making, its called a breading needle on trawlers. never seen it done with the little board before, cute trick for beginners on the internet to learn with but would soon have gone over the rail in the middle of the night in the middle of a gale in the middle of the English channel when the nets got rumpy, not a bad idea for a novice though.

I am already at my second layer of loops (length) and should have my net ready in a few hours. Oh I should add, I do not have any of the needles, or board but I can easily replace the needles with a slim stick and just cut the desired width from a hard cover to replace the board. All is good, anyone can start to do immediately. Many thanks again.

    • Much appreciated instructional video. I've wanted to know how to do this for years, possibly decades. I'll be camped out on your channel's playlist for quite some time, I'm sure. On the subject of time: I suggest you re-issue your videos in a 'Cole's Notes' form -- the minimum-sufficient set of instructions, for quick review or for quick learners, in an appropriately-named, identically-thumbnailed video accessed in the appropriate playlist. You might choose to pretend (or append) some text signifier to distinguish the long form from the short e.g." - Close Notes". On the subject of technique and tools: it occurs to me that a useful addition to netting kit would be one or more rings, worn on the left thumb and/or forefinger, made of silicone rubber and sporting a chromed conical stud above a waist… In profile, an appropriate stud or 'bollard' might look like this: /\ /. \ ) ( - - - - (The stud, above, would sit on the ring, which would be here…). The cord, during the 'large loop around' step, would pass around the waist of the stud and remain there until the cord, having been passed 'under-under-over', is drawn tighter -- at which point the silicone ring flexes, the stud tilts, and the cord on the waist is released…

Great video thank you as it’s helped many make nets for sure , thanks again.👍
