    • I don't think there's any doubt that they'd be able to see it watching it on video like this, it was more than obviously framed. The brilliance was behind using the well known predictable gag as distraction, they were just set off guard.

    • To be absolutely fair. We were given a prime angle and a close up. It's sort of hard to have your senses redirected by a magician when the camera starts shoving it in your face. Especially with this trick in particular. The camera was definitely not kind to this one.

    • What nobody is getting is that the gross-out factor is _part_ of the misdirection. An old master like Teller was probably in a (thinking 'that ain't a classy move for a magic act; he should leave that part out' and 'geez what's he going to do next, offer me the glass..?!') mood. Cognitively, it smothers the load.

  • Teller is too kind. He drank all milk just to act like a regular audience member, but I'm sure he knew the magician would spit out the milk. In fact I think he had Teller and Allison there because he thought he'd get Allison with the milk but not Teller, and then he'd get Teller with the cookie.

  • It was really effective misdirection. The actual trick of the cookie appearing was so unexpected and the moment the loading happens seems so natural and unrelated to anything. It's really quite brilliant. People rewatching this while looking for the loading will see it as the plain and simple action that it was and feel underwhelmed but the thing is, this is magic in its purest form. We all watched it happen plain as day and none of us caught it, even Penn and Teller. I will always be more impressed by magic like this than slick slight of hand or clever mechanical functions.

    • Excellent call. I agree 100%. Penn is more, like he said, Carney trash. Teller is more the "Magician". So having Teller right next to him caused Tellers POV to be from the magicians eyes rather than a spectator able to see the whole trick. Also I think he didn't invite Penn to join because Penn would've easily caught the cookie load at the end. Excellent catch my friend.

      @OmniphonProductions@OmniphonProductions7 жыл бұрын
    • Yeah, I'm sad that didn't get much attention. It was my take on the 'bowling ball from briefcase" routine. I had planned on walking on stage with the case in hand. The director changed a few things just before we started and those changes made the milk and cookie jar production a non-subject. In hindsight simply placing the case on the floor and picking it up, setting it on the table, then opening it would have made a big difference.

    • It goes to show brilliant misdirection. As Penn said he was watching out for the "spit the drink out" trick and because of that focus they missed the brilliant load. P&T talk about this a lot in tricks that end up fooling them is that there are tricks where they don't know what the effect is going to be and therefore they don't know what they are supposed to be looking for. Remember everything on stage has a purpose. The whole reason he did the human blockhead and the milk spit was to prime P&T to think of juggling and not magic so when he did a magic move it slipped right on by. Very bold but also well deserved win.

  • I love that this routine has multiple outs at the end. I kinda wish that Teller had tried to trip you up on the milk spit by also saving some for that because then he would have been really silently animated when you pulled out the cookie. Give him the false sense of security that he one upped you and then BOOM, cookie.

    • I was actually hoping he would spit it out, it would have made the kicker ending even more special. I have heard Teller has had several opportunities to “mess with” the performer and has made the choice not to because doing so may ruin the performance and that's not what the show is for. The producers said it this way... “Above all, ‘Fool Us’ was created as a celebration of magic.”

    • The trick is that he tells them the game is over, so Teller pays less attention for a short moment. Also the trick is so absurd, that the way he did it would not even register to Teller as an attempt at a sleight, but simply doing what is a perfectly reasonable thing to do in such a situation, after having spat out milk. Teller totally saw him doing the sleight, it just didn't register at all.
