John Higgins On The Class Of '92, World Cup Glory & His Time Out The Game

2023 ж. 25 Қар.
367 213 Рет қаралды

One of the greatest players of all time, John Higgins joins Stephen for a frame and a chat in Bolton at the Champion of Champions event. They discuss their memories of winning the snooker World Cup for Scotland, practicing together from an early age and how John felt during his time out of the game. There's also some decent snooker on show in this frame as well!
This is an absolute beauty of an episode to kick a big week of Triple Crown snooker off, so sit back and enjoy this one. Let us know in the comments what you think.

  • Met John a few times in the local Tesco and used to coach his son at tennis. Delighted to say he’s exactly like this off the table. One day he must have played 4 or 5 of us at pool while his son was playing tennis and didn’t for one second look like he didn’t want to be there (despite our rubbish chat!!). Took a genuine interest in us all and that’s the kind of thing that sticks with you. I’ve been a lifelong fan since. And he’s a Celtic man into the bargain 🤩😂 Top interviewing from Stephen too

    • @@AD82_23 Yeah, you get the occasional outburst or issues but even those are incredibly tame really. I always put it down to the fact that snooker is very different to other sports. It's like a long-sustained meditative state of mind you have to be in to play well - calm, clear and gentle as well as having to just deal with then forget about setbacks and irritations very easily and quickly. Being that way regularly for long periods of your days must surely have some effect on long term temperament. Most sports are a much more physically dynamic, possibly more aggressive etc and I can't actually think of any other game that requires hours on end of such pure quiet focus and calmness in combination with a game that is all about a kind of "oneness" of mind and body and feel and instinct, like compared to something like chess that's all thinking calculations.

  • Mr. Hendry, as someone who isn't a regular watcher of cue sports, your interview style makes each subject more interesting and engaging than the prior. I've been binge watching these for the past two days and the videos have been incredibly enjoyable. Growing up I was aware of your dominance, but being an American, snooker wasn't something I followed. Though even over here, I've heard of you and Ronnie. Your Potts interview even got me to watch a couple of his matches of Chinese 8 ball. What I really wanted to say, was that I think your "talks" are even more impactful than you might realize. You cover yours and the other players trials and tribulations and in such a gentle and thoughtful manner, that you not only bring ease to the interviewee but also the viewer. In some ways it seems almost like a psychologist session played through snooker and you let the viewer in on it. Wonderful stuff and you are superb at it. Whether or not you find the snooker game you are looking for (which I really hope you do), you have a chance here to make just as great an impact as your 7 world titles. I think having these talks with current players on tour might be helpful for them too, but I also think talks with people from outside snooker like JT and Ben Foster are also on the same level. It's like the game of snooker allows people to relax and be themselves. You've definitely earned a new subscriber and I will certainly put more effort into paying attention to the world of cue sports. Thank you Mr. Hendry.

Used to nip down from Lanark and pick him up at his house in Wishaw then go play at the Masters. Then we eventually played in at the Glasgow masters with John Muir, Dennis Masterton and myself. I stopped playing not long after because my work was just too demanding so didn't have the time to play. Massively regret it now. Had some fun games with John and even playing in team events out the sportsman in lanark. Anyone watching this that knows John really well tell him Ian Nicol from Lanark is asking for him and wouldn't mind a catch up. Cheers.

    • You're talking nonsense. And I find it insulting. John was filmed agreeing to lose a match for lots of cash. So how does that make him a gentleman? Just because what he did was in the past doesn't absolve him of guilt. He should have got a three to five year ban.

    • So you'll just refuse the evidence that he was proven to agree to match fixing and pretend that never happened?

      @CertifiedSlamboy@CertifiedSlamboy5 ай бұрын
    • I’m not sure what more you guys want. He agreed to fix a match, but never fixed a match. He was given a long suspension and served it. There’s no hint he ever actually fixed a match before or after. Given the rest of Higgins’ life and career, it’s reasonable to believe his defense that he felt threatened. Yet, despite the suspension, the loss of a year’s income, and all the attacks, he’s continued to play remarkably consistent top rank snooker. To me, that’s admirable.
