As a life-long Red Wings fan, watching this game is like eating bacon-wrapped filet mignon. Just stupid good. Side note: I really, REALLY miss the commentary of Gary Thorne and Bill Clement.
I was at this game. My ears are still ringing in 2018!
ame is like eating bacon-wrapped filet mignon ---- i hope you do well in 2019
That is THE TEAM ever. I mean the amount of HHOF players and this domination? Never EVER has league seen such dominance in game 7.
@@MaestorRasanen not only on game 7. This team is the greatest in NHL history. Many guys were there: Yzerman, Lidstrom, Shanahan, Fedorov, Larionov, and on. And the aditions of Hull, and Robitaille, and Hasek
Me too man on both accounts. Gary Thorne and bill clement were great for wings playoff games...
Kinda fitting that Roy's two most humiliating losses happened at the hands of the Detroit Red Wings.
To be fair, the Red Wings were insane in both years.
Thomas Knapp what was the other humiliation
His last game as a Canadien was an 11-1 loss to the Red Wings where he demanded a trade because he got pissed beyond hell at his coach at the time.
What was Tremblay thinking? lol
and vs hasek ;)
This was the single greatest ass kicking I've ever seen in a game 7 ever. And the fact that it happened to Roy was the cherry on the top.
One of the best games ever, and I'm not even a Red Wings fan
Wow, Roy must've broken your hearts at some point lol
He was a great goalie that we face a lot in the playoffs and lost some and won some. Rival and hatred is what defined Avs v Wings in the late 90s/early 2000s
WOW! You won the Stanley Cup with a dozen Hall of Famers. Unbelievable lol... Still took seven games to beat the Avs- who btw, had *FOUR* Hall of Famers.
GrassValleyGreg hall of famers aside, the Avs were coming off of a championship season. They were pretty damn good. It's not about how many players made it to the hall of fame its how you play as a team. The Wings and Avs were an evenly matched rivalry. You sound like a salty fanboy
As a Sabres fan this 2002 Wings team will always be my all time favourite Roster. Unbelievably stacked from top to bottom. Gotta love the pre-salary cap era .
I am sure part of that is a former Sabres Goalie, Dominik Hasek was on the Red Wings. He was my favorite Goalie and was very happy that my favorite team could get him a Championship after Dallas ruined his first chance in 1999.
This game really really puts on display two things, Roy's falloff and haseks rise into the books. Roy was at this point known and was using HUGE pads, while hasek was known for the opposite, his leg pads in his early years barely came up that high at all. If you find pics you can see what i mean. I was a huge buffalo fan, and was going crazy during there 99 run. I bought a home sabres jersey that year, and i live on long island im an islander fan. But the sabres i love, there like new yorks forgotten team. But yeah man Roy was getting real lazy here, and huge pads are on display. Those Kohos were ugly to, the Bauer react 5's are to this day one of my favorite set of pads, they were expensive but good. Koho doesnt seem to make pads anymore, and bauer makes like the best pads or atleast top 3 still to this day. But yeah alot of people like the era of Roy, alot of trading sports cards have him rocking those giant Koho pads. But this was also during his decline. Roy was the reason there was a limit put on pad sizes i beleive, and it was sometime around this era.
You know who was Hasek's roommate during training camp? Brett Hull. That first night I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall.
That roster had over 10 Hall of Fame players, the Avs vs wing were the best games ever...
The Sabres turn to win the Stanley Cup 🥤is due in 2025.
Most definitive ending to a hockey rivalry ever.
Absolutely. Couldn't have been any more.
Nofirst Nolast Franzen ! 9 goals in four games ! Unreal ! Still one of the best individual playoff feats I’ve ever seen !
@Nofirst Nolast And now here we are 12 years later, and the Red Wings are dead. They have become the old Avalanche fan meme: The Dead Wings.
@@Cynthesis21 And the Avs still have yet to make it back to the Conference Finals since this game. 🤷♂️💯
@@dylanhills3244 maybe this year 🤔
I truly believe hockey will never be as good as it was during this time period.
L Hayden it’s not as good now?
it's faster, but way too many injuries. jus my opinion of course. I feel like players arent used to or adjusting to big hits anymore. I miss the clutch and grab hockey, not really into the touch a stick penalty

@@versacebent I'm one of the few who agree with you. For me hockey was amazing in the late 90s and early 2000s
The NHL in the 90s was LOADED; and it's a different game post-lockout. Sill love it, but it's very different.
I was at game 5 and 7.. devastated after game 5.. shocked and utterly moved to tears of joy at game 7.
I was at game 5 too and leaving Joe Louis that night was like leaving a funeral home .....
Yzerman, Hull, Hasek, Shannahan, Federov, Lidstrom, Datsyuk, Robataille, Holmstrom, McCarty, Maltby, Draper. It would be impossible to have a team like that today.
Nathan Crapo yes
Sadly the salary cap would take all but maybe 3 or 4 of them. Certainly no way that Hull, Rob, and Hasek are signed.
How tf you forget chelios and larionov? Either way, best team of all time.. period
@Dragovich Tomlinson Koslov was gone, but Datsyuk was a rookie on this team. About a dozen hall of famers includng Bowman.
This series had about 20 Hall of Famers, the Red Wings and Avs were BOTH stacked. But post lockout, no way either teams exist today.
One of the greatest games in history. Roy's embarrassment is priceless.
He was wearing such huge pads around this era and it started getting rediculous, Roy is the reason there was a limit put on pad sizes iirc, and it was around this era. He was obviously falling off and looking for ways to cover more of the net. It wasnt only the legpads either, im pretty sure it was like every single pad lol and his shoulder chest pad looks huge.
Seeing Roy get pulled in this game will forever be one of my all time favorite Red Wings moments. It's definitely top 10. Would be top 5 if not for all the Cup wins and the beatdown of the Turtle.
“The Beatdown of the Turtle” Would be a great folk song hahaha
@@Mattribute It would be maybe Mac can get his band together and do it.
My Grandma had just passed away, and on the day of this game 7 we had her funeral service at her church, and then had a gathering for family and friends at a Hall in St. Claire Shores. Game 7 was on at the Hall in a back room, and I remember the pastor of her church coming over and giving updates to everyone when the Red Wings scored a goal, which was early and often in the first period. One of my Aunt's frowned upon him doing that...but hey, It's Hockeytown! I think my Grandma looked down from above over her Red Wings and made sure the Day would be Special!
Awesome.
I'm sure she wouldn't like her service to be any different. That was the ultimate respect. Remember and smile because it happened, despite the pain
My church in northern Michigan had youth group night every Friday, and I wanted to skip to watch the game, but as the pastor's kid I was somewhat obligated to go. Every time there was a break in whatever game we were playing that night I'd run and turn on my car radio to catch the score; none of us could believe it. Great memories and my favorite hockey game of all time. I hope your Grandma was smiling too.
My grandmother passed in 2015, and one of the memories they asked people to share was Red Wings related.

Yzerman, Shanahan, Robitaille, Hull, Lidstrom, Hasek, Datsyuk, Fedorov. Enough said.
Don't forget Larionov and Chelios.
And federov
simpler to announce whole team! AND CHIEF COACH Scott bowman!
best salary cap team of all time
Holmstrom was a stud in front of the net.
The greatest hockey series of all time. Avalanche fans mad respect to all of you and the years of wanting to rip each other hearts out. When Detroit and Colorado played, the entire world tuned in. Can't believe how long ago this was. Datsyuk was a rookie. Drury was a 3rd line center for Colorado. Absolutely crazy the talent on both of these teams!
Osgood is always the great forgotten man of the Red Wings championships.
no!!!!!!!!!! we remember
@Daniel Hulett I would say Osgood held his own against Roy who was definitely bigger.
Osgood wasn't in the same league as Roy or Hasek. A nice guy? Yes. I'm pretty sure he would agree with me. I don't hear any Detroit fan saying "If we just had another Osgood.."
biff slamchunk I’d kill to have another Osgood. I remember when the Wings brought him back, a lot of people groaned, I was thrilled. Back to back Stanley Cup Finals. 13th all time in wins. Ozzie was exceptional. No, wasn’t in Roy or Hasek’s level. Or Brodeur. But he wasn’t far below !
Plus, like Brodeur, Ozzy is one of a handful of goalies who's managed to put one in the other guy's net.
Gary Thorne-Bill Clement. Best hockey announcer-commentator duo in the US, ever.
The Gary Thorne call on McCarty's goal in game 4 of the 97 finals is amazing! Goosebumps every time.

- Looking back, it's ironic that Patrick Roy's rivalry with the Red Wings from 1995-2002 was in fact bookended by a pair of blowouts; the 1st one when they scored 9 on Roy in his last game with Montreal before they traded him to Colorado, then this game when they put 6 past Roy in his last playoff start vs the Wings. Hockey can be a funny game y'know..... ;)
I remember being so anxious before this game started. That quickly went away 👍🏼
Had a similar feeling before the Pens played Nashville in Game 5. That quickly went away too when Sidney Crosby got a break-away off the face off and Justin Schultz buried the first shot that resulting power play saw.

I was wondering what that cheer was about thanks for pointing that out haha
Ahaha! That's so savage.
LOL, the Detroit fans were merciless.
@@Torgo1969 Must've been a relief for Motown after being down 3-2 in the series lol! Yes, it was 7-0, a shellacking- but it WAS Game 7, which I think is often overlooked. Had Detroit not won Game 6 in Colorado, their season would've been over. But Colorado didn't score in Game 6 OR 7, so... Avs apparently ran out of gas lol
@@GrassValleyGreg Hard for Roy to win if his teammates can't score, but easy for Wings to score if Roy can't hold onto the puck when he does his Statue of Liberty move, LOL. Roy is immortal for his greatness, but he surely was a bit of a goofball.

That moment when you realize the 7th goal was scored by the Magic Man himself.
baby legend moment
Red Wings, Roy's worst nightmares.
lol From 1984-2003 (Roy's career) : Roy = 4 cups (and 3 Conn Smythes), Red Wings = 3 cups (3 different Conn Smythe winners). Big Gulps, huh? Welp, see ya later.
GrassValleyGreg those stats don't mean anything since it's not a head to head match up
Especially Darren McCarty
Sir Aaron Roswell, Four Stanley Cups and THE MOST Conn Smythe Trophies by ANYONE, EVER doesn't mean anything? lol Ooookay..
GrassValleyGreg I admire Roy's stats, but why didnt he win AGAINST The Wings.
This was beautiful. I watch this every day
Watched this game live at age 12 with my old man and his buddies. My favorite game of ALL time! My voice was horse for most of the next day. Go Wings (90's Wings)! Hopefully the Wings will get back to a dynasty again soon...
They will regain the dynasty!! I also had a soar throat and a hangover the next day. (age 25) Go Red wiiiiiiings!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was also 12 when this game was played. Whole family went to my brother’s house (he’s 18 years older than me) to watch. We were so tense, it was obviously a huge game. Could hardly believe how the game unfolded, the tension turned to elation, relief, and enjoyment real quick.
Datsyuk looks so young!
He was only 23-24 years old at the time. This was his rookie season. That's why he looks so young. Lol
Man. What a team.
GrassValleyGreg what else would it be? A juice box?
This still makes me smile ear to ear, almost 20 years later. My favorite team of all time. I still remember watching this game with my brother and dad.

the crowd chanting "PATRICK" still gives me chills!
The glory days of the Red Wings
That Bronx Cheer at 5:13 might just might be my favorite part of this video.
Greatest rivalry ever in all of sports was the Wings and Avs. Did I expect the Wings to completely blowout the Avs 7-0 in game 7? No I didn't. Was I glad they did? HELL YES I really do miss this rivalry though. GO WINGS!!!
Rob Weck a die hard red wings fan, i have to disagree here. UofM vs ohio is imo the greatest sports rivalry of all time
Brandon5495 As a Wings and UM fan, I have to agree with both of you somewhat. Wings/Avs and UM/Ohio isn't as great now, as it used to be. UM and Ohio were only both really good (top 5 ranking) at the same time in '97, '03 and '06, but most of the time, one was playing the spoiler role for the other. Wings/Avs, while even in '02 the rivalry was starting it's decay, was still a good rivalry, but nothing in comparison to the late '90's teams. Both were championship caliber teams, and the road to the Stanley Cup HAD to go through either Detroit or Colorado for the other to win, combine that with the bad blood from the Draper hit, the revenge on Lemieux and that fantastic March 26, 1997 (No Wings fan will EVER forget that date), and this was a rivalry just as good as UM/Ohio. Both rivalries were fantastic when they were relevant, which is why I can only agree with both of you. IMO both were equally amazing to watch as a sports fan.
Rob Weck well in the 90's it was the wings and avs but now us wings fans have the number 1 spot with Chicago
I'm surprised Roy didn't go up to the coach and say "I just played my last game for Colorado"

Wow, the amazing Hall of Fame talent on the ice for both teams. Crazy.
I never realized how stacked Detroit was back in the day, I mean even Datsyuk was out there. I didnt even know who Datsyuk was back then and now hes our number one player!!
that was dats rookie year. z came the next. they were 6th and 7th round draft picks. incredible. if you ever wanna say Detroit bought a cup, it was that year in 02. we had EVERYONE. it was awesome haha.
2002 Red Wings is actually regarded as one of the most stacked teams of any sport ever.
David Dilaura they didnt pay as much as you would think for all these players, most of them came for a stanley cup team and were willing to take a drop in their salary for it.
the first time i saw the new "#13" on the ice. i said its the new slava kozlov. before i started seeing the magic from dats. i said this new number 13 datsyuk fella is not gonna live up slava kozlov. then i saw him go through 3 hurricane players in the finals. then i said wait never mind. he is going to be something special.
I hope your dad slapped you upside the head for being such an ignorant bigot.

I was working during the game at a restaraunt. Had a bus boy keeping me up dated. I didn't believe him when he came back and said 4-0 in the first. Always wished I could have taken the day off to watch.
Holmstrom's deflection goal was fucking sick.
Not sure it was the "greatest" moment in Detroit sports history...but it's definitely my favorite. The most definitive ending to a sports rivalry ever.
with #5 and #91 being inducted into the HOF that makes 12 Hall of Famers on that '01-'02 Wings team.
And you can add another for when Datsyuk gets inducted.
Insane lol.
Unbelievable.
And counting
This game is especially memorable for me because it was the night of my high school graduation. I remember rushing home from my commencement being a nervous wreck, walking in right after the 7th goal was scored, checking the score on the tv and thinking that I was just seeing things after seeing COL 0 DET 7. It had been such a tight back and forth series that I could not believe my eyes.
20 years ago to the day!!!!! Go Wings!!
Rarely has such a high-level rivalry in any sport been so definitively decided as it was in this game.
I remember the game watching at home. It was all tense for 6 games and then "pure paradise" in game 7. Never a doubt from the 2nd goal onward.
Detroit native, Red Wings are without a doubt my favorite franchise/dynasty of all time. Can we as fans admit that 5:03 was a blatant offsides? Glad they put that challenge and review system in because of the shoe was on the other FOOTE we'd be pissed as fans.
I remember watching this game while pet-and-house-sitting in Upstate NY for some folks and their kitties, and I remember Holmstrom paying the price for Goal 1. Always liked that guy after that!
The Joe was a rockin that night.
Instinctz Hassalin I was there. every day I think back on that experience. Holy crap, my ears are ringing 15 years later. I was at an Indians/Tigers sold out game at Progressive Field, this past Saturday, 7-8-17. The Indians won 4-0 and someone told me, wearing a Tigers shirt, how loud the crowd was. I kindly explained to him what deafening crowd noise was, and cited this game.
They don’t make arenas like that no more. Shame he’s gone but we have memories and videos. Wings will be back. 🏒
For me, one of the greatest games of all time. Lost my voice for 3 days after this game. Good times.
After Lidstrom's goal from center ice, no one had a chance to beat the Wings. The Avs were incredible that year but the Wings had one of the greatest rosters ever built. Seriously the Wings in 02 were insane. The fact that Datsyuk made this team should have told everyone that he was going to be special.
That's what you get without a salary cap.
Shit you could see that man was special right off the hops . But you’re right lol for a Russian Rookie taken very quietly a thousand twenty first over ( lol ) making a team that stacked is pretty telling who the kid was gonna be
What makes this so much more amazing....it was against Roy......

Very good rivalry, but this win just cemented the Wings winning the rivalry as a whole (2008 didn’t involve most of the old players). Wings won in Cups Tied in Playoff Series Wings won overall record Wings won in fights March 26th. Wings won. Non negotiable
2008 was icing on the cake though - the Wings won that series in a sweep and chased the Av-holes goalie 3x. This in spite of a cheap shot on Lidstrom.

As an Avs fan, being recommended this video was painful. But I watched it anyway because I respect hockey history and understood just how good of a rival the Red Wings were.
Loved this basically the conclusion to the that rivalry. Was never the same after Roy retired.
Few moments in Detroit sports history were as absolutely, shockingly awesome as this one
Red Wings were insanely good that year. 116 point reg season.
this was the series that determined the winner of the stanely cup that year. there was no way that any team in the east could have beaten either of these two teams.
TheMe9595 I really wish Detroit played Toronto that year instead of Carolina in the final.
TUdaToken Me too & I'm a Leafs fan, a Wings-Leafs Stanley Cup Final would've been EPIC! But the Leafs were a banged-up team by the time the Hurricanes finished them off in 6; TOR had already been through a pair of 7-game battles vs the Islanders & Ottawa Senators & played hard vs Carolina but just simply ran out of gas. Carolina in their own right was a good tear themselves, eliminating New Jersey & Montreal in the 1st 2 rounds. But they were still no match for that powerhouse Red Wings team. :)
@Les Moore And besides, I don't think anybody was beating that stacked Red Wings team in 2002. For nostalgic purposes, a Wings-Leafs Final would've been fun to watch....but the Wings were probably going to win anyway regardless of who they played. Might've been a blessing in disguise that the Leafs didn't get thrown to the wolves against that Wings team in 2002 maybe. ;-)
@Les Moore I guess maybe it would've been interesting to see if actually could've matched up against the Wings, but I dunno, like we were saying earlier, the Leafs went through those earlier series vs the Islanders & Sens and it took a lot out of them by the time they made the conf. finals vs Carolina. If they couldn't get past the 'Canes then they certainly weren't going to beat the Wings, that's for sure. I always refer to those 2002 Wings as the 'Hall Of Fame Red Wings', because practically everyone on that team either is in the Hockey Hall Of Fame or will be inducted there at some point. Easily one of the greatest single-season NHL teams ever assembled. Once they added Hasek and Brett Hull and Luc Robitaille to their lineup before that season, the Wings were the heavy favorites to win the Cup & anything short of that would've been a colossal failure for that group.
@@ckendall67 all true. I would've liked that final because of Mats Sundin. Since Toronto won the Cup for the last time, he is likely the best player to ever put a Maple Leafs sweater on. I vividly remember this game. At the outset of the season, I printed the Red Wings 2001-02 schedule in Excel and taped it to my wall, highlighting Wins in yellow, Losses in blue, Ties in pink, and Overtime Losses in green. When they went down 0-2 against Vancouver in the first round, I was a little rattled, but figured they'd win it. When Pronger tried to take out Yzerman in the Blues series on a bad reconstructed knee and served his own demise up on an icy platter, I knew it was going to be a special run. When they went down two different times in the Conference Finals against the Avs, I thought they might get eliminated, but when they tied it up and forced Game 7, I knew it was in the books. Then, when this game happened, I flipped the f*** out with excitement with each goal. After the rest of the series was so contentious, it was magical to see the Wings so thoroughly dominate on both ends of the ice, and to score SEVEN in GAME 7 was doubly sweet! And to clinch it in the now defunct Joe Louis Arena, their home ice, was triply sweet :D The Wings had such a ridiculous future Hall-Of-Famer roster that season, too. Yzerman, Lidstrom, Hasek, Duchesne, Fedorov, Datsyuk, Chelios, Olausson, Hull, Robitaille, Shanahan, Larionov, Legace, plus the Grind Line with McCarty, Maltby, Draper, and occasionally Devereaux. They seriously had one of the deepest rosters in NHL history that year!!!
