Dear friends and followers, welcome back to my channel!
So lets take a closer look at the famous follow me car itself. From the outside it definitely stands out with its black and yellow checkered paint job. That‘s the primary reason, to stand out from all other ground vehicles. On the roof you have a set of antennas to receive data link messages and to be able to communicate on all airport frequencies. Then the large infamous „Follow me“ sign which the driver controls from his dashboard and another feature you‘ll see in minute. Some follow me cars have extra bright lights mounted on their roof or bonnet to light up the taxiway or runway during night time operation.
Inside the car, the dashboard with the associated switches. A traffic screen to send and receive messages from dispatch and the mentioned radio to listen to given clearances. Besides standard safety equipment like a fire extinguisher, first aid kit etc. the car comes with an extra set of wheel chocks and these handheld wands, but more about in a minute.
But the primary purpose for what the Follow-Me car is best known for is of course, hence the name „Follow me“. So guiding airplanes around the apron and the taxiways, to or from active runways. If a Follow-Me car is requested upon landing, the driver, who is called a marshaller, will be notified by one of the air traffic controllers in the tower, either on a separate radio frequency or via data link messaging to his monitor. Once he receives and confirms the order, he positions his car where the arriving cockpit crew can see it best once they exit the runway. Then monitors the active ground frequency and waits for you to receive your taxi clearance. Once you’ve read back your clearance only then will the driver turn on his beacon and the “Follow me” sign and expects you to keep up with him and match his speed. Some of the of Follow me signs have arrows which will flash up once the driver uses his indicator, signaling the pilot that a turn can be expected and second now. Some also have a trigger in the handbrake, switching the follow me instructions to Stop!
But see more in the video ...
Thank you very much for your time! I hope you enjoy this video!
Wishing you all the best!
Your "Captain" Joe

A worker had forgotten to switch off the orange lights of his construction van when he -- looking in his rear mirror -- suddenly realised, he had made a "catch" and a jet was following him. Luckily he stopped, as moments later the buildings around would have come too close to the wings... The jet was pushed back and the worker never was allowed again to drive construction vehicles at the airport.

Usually they drive far enough ahead for the pilot to see them. We use the Busses (VW T4 at the time), because their size gives some resonance for a loud crunch when the plane wheel hits us, so the pilots know to back off a bit."

As a non-English native speaker, I have few problems understanding you. But this is mostly due to the technical terms. Thank you for the many hours of video material and I wish you all a good flight.

    • You would no doubt be amused by Heathrow, where a taxiway crosses a main road and we have a giant sized level crossing. It is only used a few times a day for aircraft to access the maintenance areas. It is great fun to see the reaction of foreign drivers when they stop expecting a train and a Airbus 380 crosses in front of them.

Other times I’m having to look at an airport diagram I pulled up on my iPad, which can be a bit time consuming and a bit frustrating at times, especially in X-plane 11 and MSFS. 8:02 Or worse, cause a plane to crash after takeoff. Much like what happened to Air France 4590.

  • I'm an aprrentice at a german maintenance company. For some checks, e.g. of the Weather radar, we need to take the Plane to a more open space, which in oure case is on a Taxiway right next do the Runway. Eventhough our airport is rather small and the Ground Control kows that the Worker maneuvering the Plane does know the way with only 2 or 3 turns. They nevertheless send out a follow me car to guide us back to the hangar every now and then. They propably do so if there isn`t much airtraffic to keep themselves busy lol. Btw, I really like your videos, they`re really interesting and informing, even our teacher shows them to us quit frequently. Keep up the good and passionate work. greatings from bavaria

  • I've provided a follow me service a few times. I was an airport reporting officer and works safety officer for a small regional airport (YWSL). We were under going mager upgrades and some taxiways were closed. While the nearby military base provided air traffic control for the area, my airport has no tower and as such there is no ground control. Enter the pilots who got a little lost and my plain white utility vehicle with only amber beacon lights and a radio to guide them to their parking. Not a service normally operated at such a small airport, but necessary at the time due to contruction works which I was supervising.

  • Another GREAT video C.J. THANK YOU !!! What a simple yet BRILLIANT idea !! Maybe a system like this could have prevented the carnage at Tenerife ??
