December 2023 - Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park
Heading up north 2km past the Lijersdraai picnic site we saw some lion tracks and lion scat in the middle of the road. We didn’t have to drive far before finding a magnificent male lying in the shade close to the roadside.
Have been told he is referred to as "Bulldog" and is the King of Polentswa since 2022.
Filmed with a Lumix DMC-TZ60 (Bridge Camera).

The contrast between the gold of the front-latelral part of his mane with the black of the rest is hypnotizing. 0:37

    • You can see the puddles from the overnight rain. Kgalagadi is hugely dry but it is green now after lots of rains end of 2023 and since. We visited MArch 2022 and it was much greener - see here: kzhead.info/sun/e7eCkp2Zaoyga3k/bejne.html

    • Fair comment but the wind picked up by the camera was far more annoying than a desert breeze backing track. You can always turn the volume down.

      @bennyk618@bennyk6183 ай бұрын
    • I like the sound... it's relaxing and not at all offensive. And I know from experience that the "real" sound in videos is usually of people talking (and swearing!), other car engines running, camera shutter clicks and often strong wind. It's usually not as serene and quiet as you'd think or hope it would be.

    • There is a difference between being alone and being lonely. If being alone makes you lonely then you have not found your true self. His ok, he is meditating.😊

      @breakergirl47@breakergirl473 ай бұрын
    • @@breakergirl47There is indeed a difference between being alone and being lonely, as you put it. I believe the point being made though, is that the huge lion above, the big guy above, is at his prime, is "not to be messed with," but what about the rest of his life? With that size and prime shape he is in, he probably oversees two lion prides, not just one. He looks relaxed above, which is not a bad thing, but he will shortly be up again to patrol "his territory," to patrol "his kingdom." Even his stroll at the beginning of the video is a "burdensome" sort of stroll, a stroll of the demands of being "King of the Jungle," a stroll of having to deliver on high expectations, because no one, in human society, or in the animal kingdom, will refer to you as "King" or "Queen," for nothing. Lonely in the sense, that the big guy above has to constantly keep looking over his shoulder, and cannot "sit with his back facing the door, any door." You know how in movies, gangsters taking a nap at a table have their fingers on the trigger of a gun at all times, just incase they come under attack at any moment? That's the kind of life the big guy above lives, the big guy above has his fingers on the trigger of a gun at all times. Human Beings, all of us, in different levels, "live with our fingers on the triggers of guns round the clock," and this has been the case since the beginning of time, but the higher you go up in the food chain, the more triggers you have around you, because of the more "enemies" you now have, and the big guy above, as you can imagine, has his paws on all manner of triggers, all manner of guns, all manner of "security cameras," all manner of ""Closed Circuit Televisions (CCTVs)." It can indeed be lonely living such a life, whether you are an animal or a human being. The big guy above should actually not be seated alone, he should be with his pride, he should be with his family. He and his pride should be "watching a movie," the equivalent of "watching a movie" in the animal kingdom, or he and his pride should be "playing scrabble" or "playing video games," the equivalent of "playing scrabble" or "playing video games" in the animal kingdom, or he and his pride should be "mowing the lawn of their house," the equivalent of "mowing the lawn" in the animal kingdom. Animals and human beings are social beings. What's more is that the big guy above, big, strong and in prime shape as he is, can be dislodged from his "throne" at any moment, for example, from a bad injury from a hunt that went wrong, or by being overthrown by a bigger and stronger lion, or by being overthrown by a coalition of two or three equally big and strong lions. And that coalition of two or three equally big and strong lions that could overthrow him, could even be a coalition of his very own sons whom he expelled/ejected from the pride when they were teenagers. There is no love lost in the animal kingdom. There is no love lost too in human society. If he is overthrown, by his own sons, or by other lions, he has the option to flee for his life, or be killed. If he manages to flee, what happens? If he had young and tender cubs, they are brutally killed on the spot by the lion or lions that have taken over, and then do you know what else happens? A process called oestrus is immediately triggered in the lionesses in the pride that has been taken over, that enables the lion or lions that have taken over, mate with the lionesses, so that other cubs are sired, so that a new bloodline is sired. The lionesses do not try and defend or fight for the expelled/ejected lion or lions, in other words, the expelled/ejected lion or lions, immediately become history. When it comes to a lion pride being taken over, "divorce" and "remarriage" are instantaneous, and "living happily ever after," does not quite exist in "lion matrimony." Add the instant brutal killing of any offspring of the expelled/ejected lion or lions to instantaneous "divorce" and "remarriage." Is this not a lonely life to live both in the short and long run? There is more to life than just being "King" or "Queen," both in the animal kingdom and human society. Regards, Michael M. Kamau, Nairobi, Kenya, East Africa, 7th March 2024.

  • Is he alone? No siblings or pride?

    @an_yo@an_yo3 ай бұрын
    • He is patrolling "his territory," he is patrolling "his kingdom." Sometimes they are away from their prides for extended periods of time, like one week. And then again, one week for lions, could be the equivalent of one day for we human beings. If he is however needed back at the pride, then they communicate through lion roars, though I think this rarely happens. I think when he leaves for his "patrols" it is understood that he will be back after a certain period of time, or longer, so that if the lionesses in his pride need something before that, like food, then it is for them to organise themselves and hunt for food. Chances are that the huge guy above has two prides he overseers, and if he does have two prides he oversees, then I believe he would be away from both prides for longer periods of time, appearing at both prides about once every two weeks, and patrolling "his kingdom" the rest of the time. Lion protocols are interesting. I hear it said that lionesses cannot survive without lions, though lionesses have capabilities not much different from lions. For example, one lioness alone can bring down and kill a buffalo. I also find it interesting how three or four lionesses can bring down a buffalo, and then the lion in the pride appears, and the lionesses all scatter and let the lion feed first, though if lionesses combine forces, they can kill a lion. Lion law is interesting. I recently watched this KZhead video of lionesses that brought down and killed a warthog. The lion of the pride then appeared immediately and snatched the warthog kill from the lionesses, and the lionesses stepped away without resistance. The lion then majestically walked away with the warthog kill, and I think he ate it all alone without sharing it with anyone in the pride. The way I see it, lionesses can survive without lions, except for when it comes to siring offspring, but there is something about lion law that keeps lionesses dependent on lions. What this is, I don't know yet, and I may never know actually🙂 Regards, Michael M. Kamau, Nairobi, Kenya, East Africa, 7th March 2024.
