If you're fond of sand dunes and salty air
Quaint little villages here and there

If you're fond of sand dunes and salty air
Quaint little villages here and there
If you're fond of sand dunes
If you're fond of sand dunes

  • It was 2002 when I discovered this song and Groove Armada, my then girlfriend and I were into them. This moment in time was for me a new beginning in my life, a rebirth almost. This song reminds me of that feeling I had back then. She died of breast cancer at 56…Mandy you pulled me out of that hole I was in. Thank you.

    • Amazing comment. Nothing like crying in public, on a Monday morning, in the break room at work. And nothing like reading the comments of strangers to take you there. And(!!!) there's nothing like this song. This hook is a complete experience. You use your ears, heart and soul. I can't help feeling like it's up above and on into that plane of...just above music. It's obviously music, it's Groove Armada, but it's a tiny bit more, than just that.

    • I was always an insomniac and back in the 90s I'd stay up all night watching Open University. They used to play this music during the intermissions. I assumed it was a piece of stock music written for just that purpose. Then one day, I saw a die hard film. In the basement at the airport there was a gramaphone playing. Recognising it as the sample used in this track I rushed over to my mothers house and played it for her on the piano to find out what it was. She recognised it but all she could tell me was "It's about the seaside but I can't remember the lyrics" I then put all of these details on a DIY forum in the vague hope that someone would know what I'm talking about. Finally after more than a decade of searching, someone answered my prayers and told me that the record playing in Die Hard was "Old Cape Cod" by Patsi Paige and this was used as a sample on the track "At the River" by Groove Armada.

  • My husband and I fell in love with this song when it was the track on an M&S advert. Whenever it played on the TV we would just stop whatever we were doing and just listen to it. I hunted for it in secret and eventually found it. I played it for him as a surprise on Christmas morning and am in tears writing this as he passed away nearly eight years ago. This track just popped up on KZhead after something else I was watching. Once again I just stopped and listened to it. It's nice to know that so many other people have been touched by it as we were ❤

  • 22 years ago, my father went on a business trip to California and drove along the coast from San Diego to San Francisco. Before completing the journey though, he stopped by Monterey and entered a music shop where this song was playing. Every time he told me this story, he always emphasized how it felt like he was “levitating” while walking through the store’s shelves. I was born a few years later and the same Vertigo copy he bought that day still makes up an essential part of my life. I hope to be able to travel to California someday and do the exact same thing...

  • This song reminds me of when my grandparents would take me to the seaside for the day, driving there, walking down the pier, eating fish and chips and just having a good time, the car journey home, everything. You don't realize how fondly you'll look back at each little moment of that day. They both passed and the memory feels so far away but this song brings it closer. ♥

  • "In 1998, a sample of Patti Page's recording of "Old Cape Cod" formed the basis of Groove Armada's 1998 UK hit "At the River". The lines "If you're fond of sand dunes and salty air, / Quaint little villages here and there..." sung in Page's multi-tracked close-harmony, are repeated over and over, with the addition of synthesizer bass, slowed-down drums and a bluesy trombone solo to produce a chill-out track. • We got to the tent too late at V2000 to get inside, when these gods of trip-hop & other Grooves played, so we reclined resplendently on the grass outside. It was all the more transcendental for it. We weren't being jostled, no edging yourself into a small space trying to find one of your own, that horn player melted my head from 5 metres away through a tarpaulin. 22 years on, it still melts my head. Thanks for the memories Groove Armada. I love youse.

  • I saw this music video many, many years ago, when I was a teenager and it stuck with me, but I could never remember the correct lyrics, even though I had the melody in my head - very frustrating! Today I was sitting at a restaurant and this song came up! The music was familiar at first and when I heard the lyrics I couldn't believe it - I've been searching for this song for almost two decades. Even though it's not very polite, I immediately pulled my phone out and entered the lyrics, so I won't forgot again and here I am! I'm so happy and nostalgic right now ☺

  • What is it I love about this tune so much? The vocal that reminds me of when I lived in North Wales? That trombone that arouses some deep emotion from this cold, old, hard heart of mine or that laid back beat that's in no hurry to go anywhere? Probably a combination of all those things. 🙂❤

  • As a Metalhead, I'm not ashamed to say I always loved this track. The arrangement is sublime. It really does chill me out. It's music like this and I Monster: Daydream in Blue that are the reason you don't need to take drugs, kids. Get your high from listening to the music. I've never taken drugs in my life. Music gives me my highs, lows and in-betweens. However, when I first heard At the River, I kept wondering "well, go on then, what if I am fond of sand dunes and salty air - what are you going to suggest ? Oh, nothing !".
