Making a Magnetic Drain Plug for Equipment and Engines
Equipment maintenance is extremely important, but is it enough? Many of these older machines have some really nasty oil in them when purchased used. One way to prolong life of new and old equipment is with a magnetic drain plug.
Some equipment has magnetic drain plugs, but most does not. This simple and effective process of making my own will help keep my equipment running long into the future.

Stick the magnet to your table. Lower the plug over the magnet slide off table. Done.
You might be interested to know that old 3.5" computer hard drives contain similarly powerful magnets. We use them to stick a calendar to the fridge. They are so powerful that my wife can't get them off to change the month on the calendar, so I have to do it.
Lay magnet flat on table. Put fitting over magnet. Slide off table.
Have a great vacation!
Place a couple of these magnets on the side of the oil filter to trap any metal particles that passes through.
06:50 struggling to get it in. The simple trick would have been to put the magnet on the table you‘re working on, and slide the plug over the magnet. The magnet will hold to the table because magnetism is biased to the largest mass. Once the plug is over the magnet you‘d slide the assembly to the edge and slide it off the table. Done!
Hope you enjoy yourselves. I would never get on a crowded ship with 3000 other germ carriers at very close range. Haven't been sick in years & don't intend on trying it on purpose.
Hi Josh, have a nice cruise, enjoy the sunshine. Whenever you pick up loose chips, put the magnet in a paper or plastic cup, greetings Chris.
Next time put the magnet on the table where it will stick then bring the plug to it. Give it a few minutes then slide it off, no mess and no fighting the magnet.
My mother is from Ponce my fathers from San Juan, have a wonderful trip, soak up some vitamin D. Live from NewYork. Love your channel. Can’t wait for the new projects.
Have a good holiday.
Hope you had a great holiday and managed to defrost. I hate the cold and we moved here to Queensland Australia from New South Wales around 30 years ago, but I think we should have moved further North, because the winters here are still too cold for me, but way better than where we came from. How did your bees go over winter? I hope they survived.
Good job, Sir. All oil pan drain plugs should be magnetic
josh, put the magnet on the mill bed and put the holder on top and slide it off
Bon voyage Josh!! God Bless.
Did the same to a plastic drain plug on a compressor. Then steel epoxy to hold the bar magnet in the hole, applied after a thorough degrease of the nylon and the magnet.
Cool idea! Have you tried putting the magnet on a steel plate and then sliding the plug down over it?
Stick magnet to table drop plug over it then slide it off edge of the table
Yep, you beat me to it 🙂
@@MickHealey Me too.
I was just going to say that.
I had fleeing WI on my mind. Even putting it on the end of a shaft would work. Next time I'll remember this.
😂Need some AI to fix in hole ! ! !
I have been doing quite a bit of my stuff with these little magnets,, some I found easier just to peen into the hole, all we need now is something that will attract non ferrous metals.
Yes, definitely non ferrous would be awesome.
Great idea.
Love the videos! Yep, frozen snow covered hell here in Central North Dakota also! Oh, Id love to go back to Puerto Rico again!I
Double it up and get even more pulling power.
Nice tip Josh. Thanks for sharing. Take care, Ed.
Put the magnet on the table, put the plug on the magnet and slide the unit off the table...
I prefer to lock the quil and use the knee to raise the table into the tool.
Great idea. These should be on all drain plugs except the bean counters won’t allow any extra cost. I used to stick a couple of these on my Caravan oil pan near the drain plug.
Those magnets are great. I stuck one in my head stock the last time I changed the oil. I’ll have to try making some of the plugs for my other equipment. Thanks the idea and the video.
Those magnets are cool and I really like your upgrade, it looks like it was worth the fight
Magnets aren't attracted to smaller pieces of metal as strong as they are with larger objects. If it seemed impressive with chips, it will be even more impressive when it's stuck to the side of your mill. I have a 500lb pull magnet. Nuts and bolts come off easy but when it got stuck to my vice, I was not amused.
This is a ingenious tip. Thanks I will be implementing this on my Compact tractor hydraulic tank, transmission gear box, and engine sump.
I wonder if silicone is a good idea. I would suspect it to fall apart under the chemical action of the oil, releasing particles in the oil. 2-component epoxy is chemically neutral and will most certainly not do that. I‘d go for the epoxy, just to be sure..
I only buy silicone that is oil resistant, but I definitely see your point. For this video, my epoxy was gone and I didn't want to go buy more.
Funny watching you struggle with your calipers, ever think of buying a pair of those plastic Harbor Freight calipers for those kinds of things? Or Mitutoyo carbon fiber? Or... beryllium copper (if you're made of money). RTV silicone might be a better choice than epoxy.
We would put a cow stomach magnet in the pan.
Slot drill Josh ☹🇬🇧
I ditched my GoPro for an older Samsung camera which has done an outstanding job. When I edited my videos, the audio and video were out of sync. Wasn’t fixable. Total waste of money.
I keep losing a channel of audio or the camera locks up. They are truly garbage. Looking into the DJI cameras now.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Close the silicone tube with a wood screw instead of the cap. Then next time pull the screw out with a pair of pliers.
Couldn't help noticing the strapping. Hope your injury isn't too severe.
Good to see you and thanks for the video. It is sort of funny that something so small and affordable can save the life of equipment yet manufactures will not install them. Have fun on your vacation. The deer are very active near the house so I just watch them. There was 10 deer here but they ran off into the woods.
Bavo!
What state are you located ? Thanks
Wisconsin
When he's on the cruise he'll be in a state of bliss.
Save all the metal the magnets collect and then knit a vintage VW bug.
