Dachshund Facts
Dachshunds Have A Long Lifespan
The typical Dachshund lives to be 14-16 years old, though it is not too uncommon to see this breed live up to 17 or even twenty years. This is noticeably larger than the 11 to 12 year life span that most dogs have.
Dachshunds Come In Many Varieties
With fifteen total colours, three sizes, three coats, and six different marking types there are plenty of different styles of Dachshund out there. The most popular style of Dachshund in the standard smooth coat.
You Should Support Your Dachshunds Spine When You Pick Them Up
This breed is incredibly prone to spinal injuries throughout their life. In order to keep them in top health we recommend you pick up you support their chest as well as their bum so as to not put pressure on their spine.
This is something you should reiterate to anyone who want to pickup your doxie.
Dachshunds Are Natural Hunters
This dog breed was created to hunt badgers and other small game such as rabbits. Today in Germany Dachshunds are still measured by the size of the rabbit hole they can fit in.
Dachshunds Are Notorious Diggers
Due to their bred purpose of hunting badgers and rabbits this breed is naturally inclined to dig. So beware if you have a backyard with soft soil as these little rascals will likely have some fun with it.
Your Older Dachshund May Need A Ramp
As we stated earlier dachshunds are prone to spinal injuries. One of the biggest stressors on a dachshunds spine is climbing up the stairs. If you notice your dog is becoming uncomfortable with this action look into buying or building a simple ramp so your dog can climb up unencumbered.
Dachshunds Are The Smallest Breed Of Hounds
These tiny little hunters are the smallest member of the American Kennels Club’s Hound group.
Dachshunds Love to Burrow
You may want to take a look around before sitting down as these dogs love to burrow underneath blankets and pillows while trying to get comfy. This is another trait that can be brought back to their hunting roots.

  • My first doxie was a longhaired mini who lived for 22 years and never had any health issues until she was about 18. At that time, she was nearly deaf. She absolutely sold me on the breed. She was smart AND a smartass, loving, protective, fearless, and the Queen of the pillow pile. 4 years after she passed, I saw an ad for a mini longhair for adoption through her owners. They reason they gave for wanting to give her away after having her for 4 years was that she, "no longer fits our lifestyle". When pressed about what that meant, they told me that they wanted to get some chickens and didn't want the dog to kill them. WTH?? I really was not looking for another dog but after the chicken story, I took her home that day. That was 4 years ago, and it was one of my best decisions ever! She is the love of my life!

  • I had a dapple dachshund for 16 years. My Lucy was the most sweetest, kind hearted angel ever. Loved to lick. A lot. She had the prettiest blue eyes and everyone always thought that she was blind. But she could see really well. The only health problem she had was epilepsy. Other than that she was extremely healthy and playful. Had lots of energy and was a real hunter. Very intelligent. And when we got a new dog she would always take care of the new puppy as if it was her baby. She was very gentle and caring. After 16 years she started to walk in circles. Didn't eat a lot and I could see that she was ready to go. It broke my heart. I grew up with her. From being in grade 2 to going to high school and then starting to work. She was part of the family. And there's not one day that I do not think of her. We loved her so much. She was such a brave girl. And I wish she could've been here forever but I know that's not how it works. Miss and love you forever Lucy ❤

  • I have owned for Dachshunds in my life and you were right on the money with everything you said. A couple of other facts about dachshunds is that they are much tougher than they look. They will go after much bigger animals because they think they're tougher than everybody else. They are usually one-man dogs although they will be friendly if they know the other person. They're great dogs for twelve-year-old boys because they can go and wear each other out.

As of now he’s healthy but a lil over weight and some benign Tumors under the skin. He’s the chillest dog and definitely got a hunting instinct. I would always encourage him to chase after cats and squirrels but then we started acquiring Cockatiels he wanted a piece of them too. It’s been 6mos and he’s adapted them. Just lays down and watches them wander about the room. I wonder what he is thinking, lol.

  • Don't wait until they get older or develop problems with stairs. Get them a ramp immediately and teach them to use it so that they don't develop issues and have a better quality of life. Also, I hope that you enjoy the song of their people because a leaf will never fall that you are unaware of ever again. Also, raining outside = pooping inside. If you know, you know.

    • There are different thoughts on the matter. Some feel if you have stairs in your home and you don't allow them to use them they will never develop the correct muscle strength to safely navigate the stairs. Over time as they age, and the cartilage wears down they may be more likely to herniate a disc. We have always allowed our dachshunds to use the stairs. Some stairs are more challenging and straining on their spine. Ours aren't very challenging. Our 14 year old developed some very mild weakness in her hind leg. So we treated her per recommendations and she is seemingly better but no longer is allowed to navigate the steps. Also, depends on the length of their back. Some dogs are longer and more prone to spinal injury. Consistency is key.

My Ol Schmoe lost the use of his rear legs from stairs when he was only 6, and we had to put a diaper on him because he couldn't control his bladder. My wife thought we should put him down but i said no!...i will try everything first...Laser treatment was new at that time so we tried that...and a month later while we were watching tv...here comes Schmoe walking right past us...a little wobbly at first but he completely healed, because we continued a monthly treatment for him...We got 17 memorable loving years out of Ol Poolhall Schmoe!...What a Blessing he was...🥰

I have never let mine jump in or out of our cars either. We have ramps instead of steps to our house. It just isn't worth the risk to their spines. Years ago, our wirehaired suddenly went paralyzed in his hindquarters just from wrestling around with his little brother on the floor. Their spines are delicate.

  • As a dachshund Mom of 8 doxies over a span of 53 years, please pronounce this breed's name correctly. It is pronounced Dachs hoond, not Dash hound. It means badger dog. The breed is German in origin. These amazing little dogs deserve that respect.

  • we had 3 while I was growing up. Only time that was REALLY weird was when it got ahold of a dead ground hog my dad had just shot. ( we lived in the country.) It growled continuously while it was locked onto the dead animal shaking it. I could hear the bones breaking in the ground hog. such a loving sweet pet turned into vicious killing machine. ( killing? it was already dead lol)

    • I saw a video about how dachshunds hunt and kill. They kill prey by shaking it violently until it's dead. In the video they called it "squigging". In that case it was a groundhog that was killed. My dachshunds display this behavior with their toys.

  • After a lifetime of big dogs a dachshund wandered into my life. A charming longhaired. I had a lot to learn. Budlee has been a patient and loving teacher. All my dogs have been good ones but this little beast is so intelligent it's eerie. I have great respect for his opinion of people. If you're sketchy he knows it and makes sure I know it, too. He's been known to back people right out the door they came in thru. Very loudly. They curse the dumb dog but Bud's human friends know exactly what he's doing and there is nothing dumb about it. I have blessed with a very wise companion. I was so offended by a stupid neighbor thinking Bud was just a small and brainless yappy dog and not the highly specialized hound he is. Totally dismissed him, as he totally dismissed her as just another brainless yappy female human.

  • My dachshund (Killer) is 17 years old and he is living a good life. I’ve had him since I was 9 1/2 years old, since 2004 and he brings me joy everyday. Even though he is hard to keep up with. His brother (Dulles) is not as fast as he is and his brother is 12 years old. I can’t even walk them on a leash because my dachshund killer is faster then his brother. I have to put them in a dog stroller when I take them out someplace because again I can’t keep up with my dachshund. Even at bedtime, I have to put him in the kennel because he gets caught in the blinds and hits the window from playing, he has seizures and is partially blind. I am afraid he will run into the window and have a seizure.

  • Dear duchy lover After 20 years of owning and breading several duchunds I have to share that when they walk almost every day in open uneaven land and climb staires as soon as they can and jump up and from things as soon as they can their overall muscles become stronger naturally and none of my duchies developed back problems and they were rough and ran up and down stairs and jumped beds. I also give them nice big meaty bones at least 3 times a weak as well as chicken bone heads. I call it their doggy lollipops, they totally love it. Breading their legs to be slightly longer makes them much stronger and happier doggies that I had the proof of in all my duchies. Thank you 🤗🙏

    • I let my dachshund/pitbull mix figure out the stairs on his own, though it took 11 months for him to descend the full flight on his own, he never quit trying. He also jumped off my bed, which was very tall, and the daybed (also tall due to trundle). The vet says he has well formed, powerful rear legs. But at less than 2yoa, he hurt one of his front legs leaping off the bed. I sold the daybed, bought a low-slung couch, lowered the bed and invested in ramps for bed, couch and car. There's not much I can do about the stairs, I rent and though he may only weigh 30lbs, I myself am only 90lbs.

    @thelords4691@thelords46912 жыл бұрын
    • Yes, neutering may settle him down, however, his aggression may be triggered by fear of strangers. My wirehaired dachshund was very fearful of strangers. One day, a delivery person knocked on our door, my husband yelled for her to wait so he could put the dog in another room but she walked right in anyway. He nipped her on the leg, but he didn't break the skin. We paid for doctor visit. In my opinion, it was her fault for coming thru the door when told to wait. I kept that dog. He never ever had bitten anyone, and never did again. He lived to 17.
