    • It really depends on where he'd performing. Speaking as a Canadian, we don't learn about him in school. "USA History" is a one-year elective you can choose in high school, and many students wouldn't feel a need to. I imagine that course is a very condensed, "just the highlights" overview of US history that might easily skip over one 19th century agricultural scientist.

My nephew asks him his name. The guy kind of caught of guard responds with his name. My nephew, shocked faced, “on my god! He speaks English!” The dude looks at me, and all that came out of me was, “nephew, not my kid!” It starts early for some.

    • I always honestly thought John Wayne was a bit Mongol-looking. Moreso than just about any Chinese guy I've seen. People call it whitewashing, but you have to wonder how many super-talented broad-chested Mongolian actors were hanging out in Hollywood back then.

    • @@JETZcorp Considering there's been ethnically Mongolian people in China for centuries (if not millennia) how does what you said make sense? And how would there be Mongolian actors in the studio system, when the people running the studio system refused to hire them?

      @Genevieve1023@Genevieve10232 жыл бұрын
    • @@Genevieve1023 I said more than "just about" any Chinese guy "I've seen". So that's ethnic Chinese living in the Western US. Obviously if you trundle around Northern China you're going to find a lot of Mongolian looking and straight up Mongolian people. Obviously I'm not saying that John Wayne is more Mongolian looking than any single person in China. And when I said "in Hollywood", I didn't necessarily mean in the studio system, but physically in the geographic area. There were definitely some Chinese people around L.A. back then, but not a very wide cross-section of them. When my dad went to school in the 70s (20 years on from The Conqueror) there was still only 1 Asian kid in the building. The demographics back then weren't like they are now. So the ideal in making the movie would be to go on a big pre-internet man hunt to find someone who looks Mongolian, is big and imposing, and who can act very well in English. I don't think any single human on Earth in the 1950s meets all 3. They would struggle very hard to find a anyone who fulfills 2 of those requirements, or they could pick up the phone in 10 seconds and call a pro actor who definitely nails 2 of the 3. Bear in mind too that in the mid-50s you can't just bop on over to Mao's mostly pre-industrial communist China and look for actors while Chinese and American soldiers are killing each other in Korea. Going back to the original comment that started this. Let's say in the 1950s, in China, they're making a movie about Christopher Columbus. Chinese production, for a Chinese audience, Chinese language, and made on that side of Mao's version of the iron curtain. They don't even get to look in Hong Kong; that's still effectively Britain at this time. They're probably not going to find a tall skinny white guy who can can act well in Mandarin. They'd find a tall, skinny, and unusually pale Chinese actor. Now, in 2021, when half the world speaks English, and China is modern, open to foreigners, and connected through the internet, there would be no excuse for casting a big white guy as Genghis Khan. Different times bear different circumstances, so it's important to consider those differences before we judge those of the past based on our modern standards. While it IS true that they weren't very interested in pursuing diversity, it is also true that they weren't very able.

      @JETZcorp@JETZcorp2 жыл бұрын
    • @@JETZcorp Those demographics were the result of the Chinese Exclusion act, which had been around in some form for almost 100 years, and the Japanese internment camps in WW2. If that's how America felt about Asians, did Hollywood have any business making a movie about Ghengis Khan?

I laughed so hard at the end because in the beginning of the movie when she goes to his house his mom opens the door and is like it’s the mormons again and the dad is like stop trying to make us convert! 😂😂 Anyway at the end she goes over to win him back with cardboard’s with words on them and when he opens the door his parents are like WHO IS IT? & Her first card read “tell them it’s the mormons” 😂😂😂 i was dying 😂😂 they were like DOR THE LAST TIME WE’RE NOT CONVERTING! 💀

I was very confused, because it was a shitty movie that you didn't even need to watch to tell it was shitty, and still starring Matt, one of my favorite actors. • The one thing I found particularly interesting about that movie, was how racist it was against whites. It's the first time I had experienced proper racism against myself. I wasn't insulted, it was just an interesting experience. Also, I found it interesting how pro-communist it was. I didn't see any reason for such a movie to be a pro-communist propaganda. But I guess if you live in China, everything you do must be pro-communist propaganda.

      @Tjalve70@Tjalve702 жыл бұрын
    • @@Tjalve70 Yeah, you know it's a Chinese made film, set in China, paid for by China, and produced primarily by a Chinese crew. Everything China makes is anti western. Watch "Wolf Warrior" if you haven't.

      @RogerCharlamange@RogerCharlamange2 жыл бұрын
    • @@RogerCharlamange I has expected it to be anti-western. I hadn't expected it to be so blatantly racist. But it wasn't racist in the intentionally offensive way. It was just racist in the matter-of-factly way. Which was interesting. Also, the child-emperor was such blatant pro-communist propaganda, that if any western film maker had made such shallow and blatant propaganda, he would have been laughed out of the community. I do know that the official Chinese view, is that east Asians are not homo sapiens. They claim to be descendants from homo erectus. And if anyone but east Asians had said that, it would have been considered extremely racist.

  • I actually love how tipping works at Chinese restaurants when you pay cash. The waiter always breaks up the change you get back in such a way that you know exactly how much you need to leave. If the tab is, say, $29.70, and you pay $40, you don't get back a $10 bill, a $1 bill and the change, you get back the change, 4 quarters and a $5 and 5-$1's. So you know to take the $5, and that you need to leave at least half the $1 bills, half the quarters and the change.

I think the difference is if you’re eating with other families- it’s necessary to be generous and pay for the groups bill, that’s why we all fight for the bill….. But the tip part is still not very generous, but very reasonable to them, like they don’t think it’s cheap at all- the amount makes sense to them.
