  • I'm Malaysian, and I am so proud of Uncle Rogerrr 🇲🇾 I only recently got into his content after seeing this interview, so I missed him during the viral days which means I didnt know he had the whole 'scandal'. So his final thoughts really resonated because as someone who didn't know about the 'storm' - it didn't exist for me, hence "go outside and touch leaves" echoes the fact that the world is bigger than the sensitivities we encounter on the internet that is siloed in social media. @hiboyu@hiboyu10 ай бұрын
    • @@hiboyu I think her jokes are not suited for Malaysians who are as easily 'butthurt' as China considering the Western comedy format she went for. There is too much cultural sensitivity and religious sensitivity in Malaysia for edgy jokes 🤷🏽‍♀️ i haven't heard anyone making fun of 9/11 successfully. And if they do tempt it, there is always a self-awareness like, "too soon?" which she didnt exhibit. So for her, it ended up having the same backlash because the context is that Malaysians dont have freedom of speech in the name of comedy or even at all. LOL. And even if a Western comedian tries this type of humor, it's always trying to be a cultural commentary. In summary, Malaysians having 60% Malays, 20% Chinese, 10% Indian and others, I would say her jokes about Malaysians think Singapore is better would be for Chinese-Malaysian sentiment 🤷🏽‍♀️ so its distasteful, especially if she sell her jokes to Western audiences who already think Malaysia is a 3rd world country that dont have internet 🤣 better stick with food like Uncle Roger 🤣

  • Really is mental gymnastics and has to be soul crushing for comedians now who've got a presence online. However, what the cancel culture fail to realize is that when they try to cancel a comedian for a spicy joke, that comedian then becomes more well known and watch their specials just like with Dave Chapelle.

  • Interestingly, I saw one of the Mikey Chen podcasts at the time shortly after. However, Mikey Chen actually did state he 'completely understood why Nigel did it' (paraphrasing). I cannot speak for every podcast Mikey Chen appeared on, but I thought he was actually being pretty cool about the whole thing and was rather understanding. I think he was a little annoyed, but he didn't verbally/vocally saying anything outwardly negative about Nigel from what I recall. However, if you do not watch the whole podcast and you are in a certain mindset, you could potentially convince yourself you were 'thrown under the bus', but I don't think that happened.
