Thanks a bunch for mentioning stopkillinggames! While The Crew more than deserves to be saved, what we're doing will go towards stopping this sort of thing from happening in the future in games like NFS 2015, TDU Solar Crown, we're trying to challenge the legality of the practice outright. The law on this practice is not settled at all outside of the USA!

The only online only racing game in recent memory that received an offline patch at the end of its life is Gran Turismo Sport. GTS has a lot of single player content (GT League), and if you buy a used GTS disc, you can access this portion of the game just like any other racing game. I know this because I'm playing through the GT League as we speak. So, it can be done. I hope the same thing happens with GT7, once it enters its end of life because it's another "online only" game that has a ton of single player content along side MP racing.
5:40 Not a lawyer but in Germany, if a software you pay for isn't supported anymore by the creators it effectively becomes abandonedware. And if abandonedware breaks you are allowed to fix it yourself. It gives legal ground to modify a program that you don't have intellectual property to. Revoking our licenses is them covering their ass so that they can sue people that run public servers.
Although, since the server will be a black box reverse engineer I don't think they'll have the legal grounds to do that anyways. It will make it a lot harder to get the game files tho... Shout-out to anyone that participated in recording their play session communication. They are the reason this will likely be quicker to reverse engineer than most people think. Definitely not like Lego universe...
Not a lawyer and as far as i know Abandoneware is not legal in Germany. But you certainly wont get in trouble for that, because the license for that software is held by nobody (since companies split or just stopped existing) or companies would need to take a lot of money and do a lot of research if they would want to f* with you. "a copyrighted work whose rights holder can no longer be traced" "Despite constant efforts within the scene to reach agreements with the software companies or to influence the legislators in order to get out of illegality, such plans have not yet been seriously tackled and the operators of abandonware sites continue to act in the knowledge that they are infringing copyright law" It is a lot more complicated that that, but in short. No it is technically not allowed to publish abandoneware. EDIT: "In Germany, the Copyright Act and, where applicable, the Art Copyright Act are the relevant sets of standards that regulate, among other things, the right to reproduce and distribute works." This is the legal ground for abandoneware "Urhebergesetz und ggf. Kunsturhebergesetz." EDIT 2: Or you meant just fixing it for yourself and not publishing it, then it would be in a gray zone i think.
Considering how heavy handed that country is with piracy, that's refreshing to know they're more sympathetic when the software becomes abandonware
Another reason to despise IP laws
@@HSG4meRI respect piracy laws and goodness of fair use, but I despise the DRM law. Apple made it an excuse to sue people who repair their devices. And I think car companies did as well.

Funny thing is that, from what I remember, you can lose connection mid-race on singleplayer in this game and it will allow you to finish the race before it attempts to reconnect back online.
Yes, because it "pings" the server once you've done something or want to do something. Everything that would normally require saving or reading your savefile needs an internet connection because your save file is stored on their servers. When the Servers shutdown you could still drive around in the car you were in no problem, but once you wanted to start an event or change a car or anything it kicked you to the Boot Screen with the Error.

Kinda fitting how the "internal voice" of Gordon Freeman, (Context: Accursed Farms is the dubber of the "Freeman's Mind" series.) is trying to save video games. And this all started from a video game with a protagonist who looks like Gordon Freeman.
You aren't wrong there, it does seem fitting indeed

This and abandonware sites are godsends for those of us who want to play older games like TDU 1 and 2, and the older NFS Games. It's a damn shame I can't just pay to get a legit, working copy on pc when it would be so simple.
Pantha: "Anger doesn't help, be kind" Also Pantha: "F...U Car Manufacturers"
I find this licensing deals so bullshit, they only apply rules like this to games, because THEY CAN. They insert a music piece in a movie, or a car brand, it's fine 30 years later on.
Licensing in films is different from games
Nah, licencing is a reason to delist a game but not to make it unplayable. It's entirely up to ubisoft to shut down servers, release an offline patch, etc.
a lot of the time that's not still not even true with music though. you'll find in a lot of movies and tv shows that later re-releases and streaming releases will have licensed music taken out and replaced with stock music.
Well there some indie games that ball to copy a model of a car and rockstaar GTA radio system were. We can play our own music
It sucks. Maybe they could re brand the cars with fake names, maybe change the look of them ever so slightly and you have your unbranded spoof cars. But I guess that means effort and care. I would totally play this game with fake cars.
The thing is that Ivory tower doesn’t make the decisions when it comes to if The Crew lives or not, this is on Ubisoft. The studio can add an offline patch, but that is if Ubisoft allows this, and I don’t think they will.
Oh please. The devs are just as guilty for not having the fucking balls to stand behind their consumers and say no.
I don’t think it’s that possible because the game itself is foundation is based on a live service model. Which I would imagine would need to be recoded which then requires money. I think the game is now.
@@Game4LordNo, thats not really most of it works.

A note for any fellow Canadian citizens, the one for Canada isn't up yet but the site says they'll give an updated link once it is.
9 hours bro till your summit can’t wait the only problem tho is It starts at like 4 in the morning in the uk
Yeah I always thought it was weird the game company has to pay to then show off their cars, sounds, style, ect... so not only do they can advertisement of their vehicles but they also get paid for them advertising their vehicles.
Racing games aren't just games for people to drive a car but it's also advertising them because there's cars that speak to someone, I myself love the mitsubishi Evo X (from MW ik questionable liking but custom design not blacklist) but these games not only bring people into certain car communities but why bother they'll just get the file after it goes through 9 different hands (Ford v Ferrari reference)
Not only cars in media make me like them but also music. I am a huge fan of Bullet For My Valentine, Avenged Sevenfold and Celldweller since I played Most Wanted and made them tons of money with merch and concert visits. It's free advertising for them and if there has to be a license fee at all it would have to be an infinite one and not one that can expire. Game preservation is non-negotiable!
Preservation applies to Most Wanted as it can be played via piracy. It's just not sold anymore, and they still don't make PS2/X360 games anymore.
@@luckaswolf You are right and it should at least be listed on Steam since many more people would be able to still play it and would be willing to pay for it still.
Another thing that baffles me, cuz he brought it up, is in game licensing such as media or in this case car brands. If a company pays anyother to use its brand in their product, that Initial transaction should be it. It blew my mind that rockstar had to update their 15 year old game to remove some music. That needs to change. I would never expect someone to pay me for the rest of their life because they had something I made in their product.
We need to champion offline content over everything else, we need plenty of things and mods to do with the game, because for always-online games, there will come a time where they will stop functioning for good, not all of us play online, and we just want to enjoy the cars and world with AI opponents endlessly however we like for infinite amounts of replayability no matter where your interests lie, without heavy reliance over online.

thing is, Midnight Club LA allows you to play the single player part of the game completely cut off from the internet, which unfortunately games like The Crew, NFS 2015, and upcoming The Day Before Solar Crown just lacks in that department meaning that regardless if you even own physical copy of the game or not, good luck trying to get past the "unable to connect to servers" message even if you're just wanted to play the single player part of the game, because you can't

Well nostalgia aside times are changing as well as media in general gaming specifically is now on a dark path like always online why if you are gonna kill them atleast make them offline before taking down the servers damn what is wrong with publishers and devs in general
Publishers are money hungry but are quick to cut corners or losses in spite of the customer, and Devs “need to eat” meaning they either have no balls and not enough of them are willing to stick up for themselves and others in the industry, they co sign these type of ideas or they are simply just not concerned about the consumer, they make the game cause their boss says so, ship it and could care less outside of that
For The Crew 2, I hope we will at least get a way to save our pictures. And even better if we get an official offline mode

I never managed to beat this game. It's nice what the community is doing, but I don't have a PC so I have no way to play this game (not that that's any different from everyone at the current moment in time). I did watch your video on the game, seemed like fun.
Facts, my dude! Spit your stuff indeed!
F, i tried starting the game through the launcher in the explorer and well it starts ubisoft connect and asks for a key. i guess they just removed the key for the game from all of the accounts and well that is just wrong and to me more of a problem then not having official servers for the game. well i guess it will take some time for the community to get the game running on custom servers or just offline, well wouldnt be the first time for a community to get their own servers running for a game like that.
Surely developers are pissed with this stuff too. Why would I want to put time and money into making stuff when after a while it becomes lost media at the snap of someone's fingers? At least with other delisted games you can still play them offline.
Let's hope we save the crew
What an amazing Renaissance era for this, I'm willing to see the outcome.
I really hope this works out.
All i'm gonna say about that is : " All of you should've seen it coming when the developers, back in 2010, adopted the "all online" mentality " That idea was going to turn bad for a multiple reasons. Glad to see the game getting a sort of revival like NFS:World did, it will take time but i certainly want it to succeed 👍
I'd like to confirm that yes we the French know how to make things done with our government, but we got our own Thatcher ta its helm currently. good information this is why gta 5 don't have real cars and games like roblox we had to pull our lambos and bmws cause of some copyright issue.
TC was the only exception, but 99% of games that contain third-party content can be accessed anyway regardless of who originally purchased it or not. Not to mention that console games stop being sold regardless of licenses, especially because they no longer manufacture PS2/PS3/X360 games
There is a song called countdown to shutdown by the hives. Someone needs to make a crew remix of it
Isn’t it possible for studios and manufacturers to sign a contract that says the car can be used in the IP as long as the IP keeps getting made? Idk how contracts work but like can’t they say they’ll put a Nissan cars in the games as long as The Crew IP stays alive? Or is it required to sign contracts for each individual games?
Fun Fact for you Theo: Generally in europe (speaking for italy now), since TC1 got abandoned and revoked from licensing, we are legally allowed to fix the game, fuck the licensing file to make the game think it's licensed anyways, and spread the "new game" and to call it YOUR game, like Counter Strike was a modded Half life, and it's a standalone game. But yeah, the whole game would have to be different (that does NOT include car models or driving physics in this case)
If happens with NFS 2015, they know what are gonna do
if i had a racing game like this, i'd make a license-free backup design for each car, music and whatnot in the game, and when the license ran out, i'd replace everything with original fantasy designs, and a custom sound track, just to let the game keep on living. if racing tracks require licenses too, then chop off all that do and include a simple track editor. there
Yo someone posted on the DRIVECLUB sub of them being on the games DLC which was a masive post as the game is shutdown, all tho the person is inactive and the whole comunity is hoping for any progres from them
The car license issue is a quite a big issue this is why the 99% of old games are unable to play unless you buy a CD copy for fricking 79$ or pirating

in some way it´s a shame, but you know that the internet starts "preserving games". it´s only a matter of time until you can emulate/ crack everything, especially a game with that mainstream success and that prominent history
This reminded me when NFS World died, EA shut the game down and the community worked hard to have community servers and reanimate it. But in this case Ubisoft demonstrated to be the bigger asshats by making sure most people can't access the game, because making the files completely inaccessible from their launcher is one of the biggest dick moves I've seen.
people would just pirate the game and ignore Ubisoft Connect entirely ;-)
