Britain Under Attack | July - September 1940 | World War II

With mainland Europe under Hitler's control, the German Führer turned his attention to Operation Sealion, and the Battle of Britain, expecting an easy victory. However he'd underestimated the enormity of the task and the spirit of a nation inspired by Winston Churchill.
Produced and narrated by Liam Dale.

  • Very good to the point of excellence, the firm but slightly modest vocal delivery is worthy of praise…for in his way the narrator reflects the perilous state in which Britain stood in 1940…Post Dunkirk we had little to boast about…yet we had delivered our retreat from Dunkirk, our great people had showed their guts to cross the Channel in our little boats to save those brave soldier souls who were ours! Then we had our Hurricanes and Spitfires and our very young pilots…God bless them - they were brave - many with so few hours’ flying hours…That takes courage! And we had our Royal Navy! Am proud to say I lived through it all, very proud, indeed, when war ended I was twice the age I had when it began, and they were lonely years, but thanks to our People who I would call “the Greatest Generation of all time”…and we had Winston! Without Churchill we’d have gone down that understandable perhaps terrible route that France had thought fit to take…alas!

  • So often the spitfire is heralded as the savior of the battle of Britain. The role that the Hurricane played was just as vital but so often ignored. Both were essential in this battle and both in my eyes are hero's as are the men who flew them with the men who serviced them. In all it was a team effort and one that was well done. Looking at the past where people knew right from wrong I find it so difficult to understand the tolerance people show today for destructive and evil ideology that persist in todays world.

    • @@joefell7845 In fairness, to get our ratios aright, might this be because there were more of them? I mean, eg, if there were 200 Hurricanes each with two kills and 100 Spits each eg with 3 kills that’d be 400 kills to the Hurricanes and 300 kills to the Spits yet per kite 2:1 favour Hurricane 3:1 per Spit…But don’t get me wrong, I too think the Hurricane was /is too easily dismissed because its aerodynamic held to be - if not even derided by some shame be upon them - a mere extension of the last bi-plane ie as opposed to the super shiny metallic Spitfire…straight from the Schneider Trophy wins….but the Hurricane to its credit could be more quickly repaired! Sydney Camm felt put out too for all his efforts…but poor Mitchell on the other hand didn’t live to see the triumph of his creation….We were fortunate to have them both…Our glasses raised…Amen

    @alaindomagala1022@alaindomagala10222 ай бұрын
    • Depuis 1932, les décrypteurs polonais Marian Rejewski, Henryk Zygalski et Jerzy Różycki travaillaient au sein du BS4 (le bureau du chiffre de l'état-major polonais chargé du décryptage et du renseignement sur l'Allemagne) et, avec l'aide capitale de l'officier de renseignement français Gustave Bertrand (qui avait cultivé un informateur allemand répondant au nom de code "Asché" qui avait fourni aux services de renseignement français des tonnes de données vitales, notamment un manuel de procédure nazi complet pour l'utilisation de l'appareil de cryptage Enigma), Grâce à l'achat d'une version commerciale de l'ancien dispositif Enigma et à de nombreuses analyses, les nazis ont réussi à pénétrer dans les réseaux de cryptage à trois rotors de l'armée de terre et de l'armée de l'air allemandes. Il s'agit d'une réussite fantastique, mais il est vrai qu'ils n'ont jamais réussi à percer le cryptage de la Kriegsmarine allemande en raison des couches de sécurité supplémentaires utilisées par la marine allemande. En décembre 1938, les nazis ont introduit deux rotors de cryptage interchangeables supplémentaires dans le système Enigma, ce qui a immédiatement interrompu la grande majorité des efforts de décryptage polonais, et ce jusqu'à l'éclatement de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Dans les semaines précédant le début de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, les travaux de recherche polonais ont été transmis aux Français qui, pendant les six mois où ils les ont eus en leur possession, n'ont guère ajouté aux connaissances accumulées, puis au Royaume-Uni où le gouvernement britannique les a saisis à bras-le-corps et a fait de leur étude une priorité absolue. C'est ainsi qu'est né le projet britannique "ULTRA". Jerzy Różycki a choisi de rester dans la France de Vichy où, à l'insu des Allemands, il a travaillé sur un système de cryptage secret distinct, qui n'a pas porté de fruits tangibles avant sa mort en 1942. Marian Rejewski et Henryk Zygalski n'ont pas été inclus, pour des raisons de sécurité, dans le projet britannique "ULTRA" et n'ont donc pas participé aux efforts britanniques de décryptage. Le projet britannique "ULTRA" s'est appuyé sur les recherches de base non opérationnelles des décrypteurs polonais et les a développées MASSIVEMENT pour décrypter à nouveau l'énigme nazie à 3 rotors, suivie en 1942 par le décryptage de l'énigme M4 améliorée de la Kriegsmarine (le dispositif d'énigme à 4 rotors, nom de code "SHARK"), ainsi que par le décryptage simultané du dispositif de chiffrement "Lorenz" beaucoup plus complexe utilisé par les hauts commandements de l'armée et de la marine allemandes (TUNNY), avant de percer le dispositif de cryptage "Geheimschreiber" utilisé par le haut commandement de la Luftwaffe ainsi que par le sommet du gouvernement nazi (STURGEON). En plus de ces réalisations britanniques, un autre produit du programme ULTRA a été la construction du premier ordinateur électronique programmable au monde (COLOSSUS) afin d'accélérer le décryptage des codes allemands. Conçu et construit par une équipe britannique dirigée par Alan Turing et l'ingénieur en téléphonie Tommy Flowers, il a permis aux Britanniques de passer d'un processus de décryptage qui ne donnait souvent des résultats que plusieurs jours, voire plusieurs semaines, après l'écoute du message par les Britanniques, à une situation où, vers la fin de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, les Britanniques lisaient BEAUCOUP de communications de haut niveau en même temps que le destinataire allemand prévu. Les premiers décrypteurs polonais ont en effet fourni le "gland" à partir duquel les Britanniques ont cultivé le "puissant chêne" de l'ULTRA.
