You can feel the power you hold in your hand, and if you're using real arrows, those are lethal weapons. • "You can get good at shooting a crossbow in 5 minutes" So true. There's a reason they started more or less replacing bows as the default ranged infantry weapon in the later medieval period. Proper archers took months or even years to train, and they had to be pretty athletic to withstand the strain it put on them. Meanwhile any shmuck by comparison could make for a decent crossbowman with a few weeks of training.

    • @Cegesh It really depends on poundage. I'm a woman with a slight build (meaning, no real muscle mass worth speaking of). I've practiced archery for years, and never had trouble with my bow. It's not a 70lbs hunting bow monster, and I wouldn't even dream of drawing that back. Most of the pulling isn't with the arms, it's with the shoulders, and that makes it much easier. I can hold my shot for up to 10 seconds (roughly), which is plenty of time to aim, secure, and release. And that's recurve, where the pull is constant. As I understand it, maintaining a shot with a compound bow is even easier because of the pulley system reducing the pull once it's drawn all the way out.

Yes, there are things that wouldn't happen in real life, such as constantly catching, blocking, and dodging of arrows shot at close range (maybe occasionally happens but not as often as shown on the show), but Amell and company took extensive archery training for the show, so they could have easily broken down the technique. I remember reading that an archery pro broke down Amell's form and said it was pretty good and realistic. Plus, one clip is with an elf shooting at half human creatures in a realm with magical rings, wizards, and talking trees, while another is a man shooting at a demi-god that is riding on an alien version of a car or motorcycle, so what happens on Arrow is far more real than either of those things.

  • One minor nitpick about the Hunger Games scene: Human ribs are oriented the other way compared to animal ribs. Unless the arrow is fletched so as to spin in flight, she'd want her broadhead blades to be horizontal if she's planning to hunt men.

    @laurenceperkins7468@laurenceperkins74683 жыл бұрын
    • Usually, arrows ARE fletched to put a spin on them. Like rifling in a gun, it helps to increase accuracy and range. Also, a proper hunting or war bow would be powerful enough to BREAK ribs as the arrow passes through.

      @johnmullholand2044@johnmullholand20442 жыл бұрын
    • @@johnmullholand2044 It really depends on who's doing the manufacturing. Fletching the arrow to spin gives you more accuracy, but a shorter maximum range (forward momentum gets transferred into rotation, slowing the arrow down) and it's more difficult to do. Definitely better in the majority of cases if you can do it precisely since accuracy is quite important, but a lopsided spin is worse than no spin so if you don't have the proper tools you're better off making it straight since that's easier to get right. And yes, a powerful bow will break ribs and go through anyway. But that's still energy that's not going toward lacerating the important bits, and can easily turn a hit at a range or angle that would barely be lethal into a hit that is merely inconvenient.

      @laurenceperkins7468@laurenceperkins74682 жыл бұрын
    • @@laurenceperkins7468 And that's why you should know your limitations. As in, don't try to shoot a deer (or whatever) at a longer range than you can reliably hit where you mean to, and know the anatomy of your target. It's one thing to put an arrow in a paper target at long range, something else entirely to shoot an uninjured, unalarmed animal. As a hunter, you owe it to that animal to kill it quickly and cleanly.

      @johnmullholand2044@johnmullholand20442 жыл бұрын

    • @Mitchell G I did mention that it matters whether it's fletched to spin or not. There are advantages to either design. Also, she's not using a modern, compound bow. She's using a recurved shortbow. Those don't throw nearly the same amount of energy per unit draw weight and she doesn't appear to have sufficient back muscles to be using a heavy weight bow the way she's shooting.

    • Since they're all completely unreal, I think animated movies often feel an additional pressure to make things 'realistic', because that helps viewers suspend disbelief. Also, since the characters are animated the animators _can_ make them real experts. Like, you don't need to teach an actress to be a so-so archer to play Merida - you can animate her to be a good archer with excellent form on every shot.

      @KillahMate@KillahMate4 жыл бұрын
    • In many ways, it is much easier to be accurate in animation. For a movie like Brave, they can bring in some expert archers and draw based on them. You don't have to train any actor to pretend to be an expert, so the level of skill you can have the character display is higher and more faithful.
