Nicola Sturgeon: the moments that marked her leadership

Nicola Sturgeon has resigned as Scotland’s first minister in a surprise decision, triggering the Scottish National party's first leadership election in nearly eight years.

Sturgeon became the leader of the SNP in the wake of its failed 2014 independence referendum, and made independence her main political ambition. Despite continuously performing well in elections, she faced a series of political setbacks recently, including the UK supreme court defeat of her plans for a fresh independence referendum and a damaging row over the double rapist Isla Bryson being sent to a female jail after announcing she was a trans woman.
Announcing her resignation, Sturgeon said she no longer had the stamina to continue in the highly pressured and demanding role.

  • Her leadership was driving all of Scotland's public services into the ground, islanders having to find a way to finance their own ferry (thanks to Westminster), businesses threatening to leave Scotland, businesses that gave Scotland the body-swerve. What a "legacy".

    • Shows how little you know. There have been a multitude of positive policies enacted in Scotland in her tenure. The results of a few can be seen in the recent report highlighting how child poverty is 20% lower in Scotland than anywhere else in the UK. Thanks to the Scottish government the worst of the tories austerity policies have been mitigated here as well as better access to dental care and a better function NHS. The list goes on and if you cared to look beyond your prejudices you may have cared to do a bit of research before talking nonsense.

    • @@SI-vb7hd The chairman of the Scottish BMA, Dr Iain Kennedy, says the NHS in Scotland is ‘broken’ and cannot survive as an ‘all-you-can-eat buffet service’. Health is already becoming semi-privatised in Scotland. Since the pandemic there has been a 68 per cent increase in people going private to escape eternal waiting lists. NHS dentists in Scotland are as rare as hen’s teeth...

    • @The Grouse Neither can you, apparently. Historic starts with a sounded 'h' in standard English, 'h' doesn't make a voel sound, thus 'a historic' is correct. If it was pronounced without a sounded h, then it would be 'an historic'.

    • @@thegregorycolin2335 No, an historic is generally considered correct

      @_Sakidora_@_Sakidora_ Жыл бұрын
    • @Sakidora except it's not. It's generally considered old-fashioned and poor grammar from a time when we used to drop the 'h' in words of French origin. In fact, a quick Google of the Gaurdian's style guide says as much and regards 'a historical' as correct in modern English. As does the univerisy of Bristol's, the Chicago Manual of Style, the Ap Stylebook, and The Penguin Write's Manual. Both the Oxford and Cambridge dictionaries contain a definition with the words 'a historic' or 'a historical'. So, not only is it incorrect form, but it's not even a difference between standard British or American English. The use of the word 'an' before historic, in spoken English, is entirely dependent on how the speaker pronounces the word and thus is entirely dependent on their accent. However, in written English the standard form is to write 'a' historic.
