In the middle of the Portuguese mountains, lies a town without a single inhabitant. The last resident, a 72 year old man, left the village in 2006. He could not stand the loneliness of having an entire village to himself and left for another parish.
"What were we doing there living alone? Silence grinds our heads," he says, opening an anguished smile. He moved to a village not far away, where at least they have the company of nine other residents.
The town we’re exploring today, which once belonged to a dozen residents, has become a ghost village, with tarred roads, electricity and even a fountain, opened in 1987, which still gushes water. Surprisingly, most of the houses were still completely furnished, as if the former inhabitants just vanished into the blue. Around the town, there are still other villages with local farmers who insist on living there. But there are less and less cultivated fields that, over the past 20 years, have been swallowed up by the maelstrom of eucalyptus that covers entire slopes.
How would you feel having a complete town completely for yourself? Explore with us today, and let your imagination run wild.

Abandoned GHOST TOWN in the middle of the Portuguese mountains | Families vanished into the blue
#abandoned #urbex #explomo #ghosttown #portugal
I did some research on why the town's were abandoned. The village was for sale and it doesn't cost the owners much to keep the homes unoccupied for several years, waiting for an increase in price to sell them. There is another village in Portugal called Covelo do Monte in Boticas that hasn't had residents for 50 years. That would be a neat one to explore if you haven't already. Your videos are well produced and very entertaining to watch. Thank you, Diana.
Careful there might be anaconda living in that abandoned house..
Watching your video from the phillipines.
@@iwaydelasalas1163 +Learn where your snakes live please !!! Anacondas are from the south America and not Portugal
Watching the tank where the water was thru me back into my childhood where after school I use to go and wash my familys cloths the stone was to bit the cloths full of soap before rinsing it in the well how heart warming the note to strangers to help urseves but do not break anything memories that the heart can't carry everyday because the saudades are too heavy to carry and the lagrimas too bitter to the lips when they roll down ur face and touch ur lips
RockyRoadCreations Did it say why the town was for sale in the first place?
The reason the water was bubbling is due to the spring water coming into the holding tank. Pure Artesian water!
“Espigueiros” That’s the name for the Corn Sheds
I spent much of my childhood in a place like this: No electricity, running water, roads so poor that you couldn’t drive into them, etc. There was no bathroom, or toilet. We had to go up the hill behind the house to “do our business”. We kept a pile of corn husks near the front door, to use as toilet paper. You’d just grab one and head up the hill. I helped my grandparents by herding the goats, helping out with the harvest, participating in the slaughter of the pig, etc. In those days, (1960’s) there was life, laughter, excellent food, celebrations, culture, music. It was the best time of my life and I never really got over the trauma of immigrating from there to a large North American city. But, it was a very hard life for the adults. In the 70’s everyone started emigrating to the cities and to the rest of Europe. My grandfather always lamented not having left the place in his youth. Today, only 7 people live there, most in their 70’s and 80’s. I must be crazy but, I plan on buying a small home there, when I retire in 10 years. It’s the Citizen Kane effect.
Join the club, "Filho da Rosa" (cute name, by the way 🙂). I did and lived all those things too and also dream of having a house in my grandparents' village after retiring.... 🙂.... mainly for the memories it would invoke.... 🙂
OMG!!!!!! I can´t believe that you guys really did it. I'm so happy right now. Finally someone portrayed that place forever. Thank you so so much. LOVED IT :)
Are you sure that town is completely abandoned? A couple of those houses looked like they’re occupied, at least part time...
This is when you have to have complete trust in your driver! Reminds me of driving through mountains in Colorado where I used to live! What an awesome journey you took us on. Both of your reactions to things reminds me of a child-like wonder - so rare in this age of cynicism. Excellent as usual. Stay safe.
The last places you were in looked as if someone was still living in them, there looked like there was no dust, cobwebs, it was all very clean.
Agree looks like weekend getaway place, or to take a secret lover etc
@@georgie4808 I agree. Nothing says,”You’re not welcome without an express invitation like a locked set of gates! Or a locked door, key or not.
Top floor of the one building had living plants outside the door (38:24) as well as inside (39:12). The floor, dishes, and windows were clean. Appears that someone is still staying there or taking care of the plants at least. Plants don't survive without water. Great explore.
i also noticed the plants i agree someone had to b there
Agree
I agree with you, I would have to say that several families are using the ancestral homes as "vacation" homes as they are much cleaner and better taken care of than many of the other homes. The evidence of newer calendars and the green plants indoors proves that someone has been there in the last 4-6 week, maybe even sooner.
@@kkingshott I commented the same above. I think its a vacation or cottage get away for some people in what is probably ancestral homes. Its a wonderful idea, so far into nature, in a home your great grand parents might have be born in. Amazing thing to do. They might not be happy to see this vid on KZhead and 2 guys walking through, however careful they are.
Someone must be using those two clean places fro weekend or summer holidays and it has been summer so everything is still fresh. From the texture and smell of ash in the fireplace you could judge how long ago the fire was lit.
Thank you for being respectful during the making of your video. Portuguese country people gave their blood, sweat and tears to build villages and families in those places. It's possible that some descendants still return there for vacations, but vandals mess it up while empty. throughout the year. Too bad!
The house that has the live plants has someone staying there or those plants would be dead.
Agreed, I think people are coming back periodically, from working in the city to getting some money together, then coming back to stay rent free, in ancestral homes, that they fix up a bit to make livable for a few months of the summer, before they go back to the city to work through the winter months. Makes sense, I'd do it. You would get the best of both worlds, the city and fun there, which you can get fed up with after a while and want some quite time away from people, chill, enjoy the country.
Lee Jepson hope they locked the door again because it was someone’s home they come back to it Working else were
Patricia Galloway I agree I have been in a paranormal activity group and seen some unexplained things but I never saw a plant loving poltergeist gardener lol
Definitely
Definitely had a person living there.... those plants need regular water
This was a really unique find. The tank of water to wash clothes had those slanted grooves so you could scrub your clothes. Here in south Louisiana USA we had something smaller, but it was called a rub board. I've washed many clothes using this & stomping on them in a tub of water to get them clean, then hung them outside to dry. Thanks guys, this was awesome! 💜🙋♀️🇺🇲
I always thought it was called a scrub board
@@darlenesykes2009 En Mexico le llamamos "Tallador" me encanta lavar en tallador!🌹
@@darlenesykes2009 it's called a "frottoir" in french. Rubboard, washboard & scrubboard, which the cajuns used in the old days as a musical instrument when it wasn't being used to clean clothes.
Hmm rug board !=8)
@@JLowe-uu8lr actually it's called a rub board. 🙂
Those last couple of houses were as if someone was still coming there!! There's no accumulation of dirt and dust!! It's way too clean and refreshing!! You two really did an awesome 👌 job checking out the village!!! I am 👍 so thankful that you ❤ brought us along with you on this investigation and exploration of the town!! You're really top of the list for explorers!!! Again thank you so much for bringing ❤ 💓 us along ❤ 💖 💕 💗!!!!!
I've a special interest in ghost towns, as the village where I grew up is now a ghost town. This was unbelievable; the journey up the mountainous road itself was fascinating! There's probably myriad reasons why this is now a ghost town. I'm sure the inhabitants took what they deemed the most necessary and personal when they moved away because let's face it, that wouldn't be an easy move to make. Thanks Maureno and Danny for this wonderful journey. And thanks Sonya for the suggestion. I loved this so, so much! Cheers from 🇨🇦
Nossa, é um vilarejo?
That was the most interesting video. My granddaughter watched with me and enjoyed it also. She thinks the house plants were still alive because people could still be living there, but have not updated their calendar. Of course it could be ghosts! We would LOVE TO GO THERE AND EXPLORE.Stay safe. Thank you for sharing. 😊🇺🇸
Someone had to be caring for those plants. Maybe someone has made that place a little weekend getaway ?
I just made the same comment. You and I were thinking the same thing.
@@katndon Agree with that, probably ancestral homes they stay in (rent free) fix up a bit, kinda like a cottage.
I washed a lot of clothes In tanks like that. We are farmers and until I was 16 we didn't have electricity so we washed our clothes like this. Wow what a beautiful place very reminiscent of the state of Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul Here in Brazil . I would live in a place like this without a problem with electricity.
The journey to village was just as interesting as the village, that was until you got to the house with so many personal belonging. You have got top marks for this one. Shame your partner in crime wasn't with you. He would so love to find the car. Thank you for taking us on a mother wonderful journey. Amazing the skill & time it would have taken to build the homes out of the stones. Cheers from Australia 🇦🇺🐨🧡💛🧡💛🙏
Love Australia!
Wow, what a fascinating exploration of life in Portugal's mountainside. Amazing to see how people lived in a close communal life. I can imagine the women talking and scrubbing their family's clothes against the ribbed stone surface then dunking the clothes for the 'rinse cycle'. Thank you both, for your efforts to show us such a fascinating place!! Amazing views too. Bravo!⚘⚘
First of all, thank you Sonya for giving the guys this wonderful location. Thank you Danny for all the interesting facts about the land and the corn and for all the cute comments of surprise as you opened doors and discovered wonderful things. And Maureno, you did it again!!! Loved the surprised and happy look on your face going around every corner. You made an already superb video a joyous occasion. You found a good guy when you found Danny. Miss Remon, though.
It seems like Denny is a great 👍 exploration partner to be with you - a great video to watch - both of you can be a future archeologists - best regards and more power with your future explorations 🙂❤️🙏🏼👌✌️
There are many of these abandoned villages in Spain, Portugal amongst other places. I would call the old machine a corn thresher. Excellent explore, really good work. Thanks and all the best from Buenos Aires! 👍🤗
Thank you for these videos. I’ve spent many of my childhood summers in Portugal staying with family and it feels so good to be watching the old parts of this country that I miss. Keep making these videos!
Imagine all these houses completelly restaured ; how wonderful it could be. Perhaps one day we will meet this place full of life. Thanks guys for your dedication.
Im So glad you finally have somebody who actually knows what they are talking about on the explore with you.
The cement area for washing clothes had a neat wash board built right on it for scrubbing the clothes very interesting. Another enjoyable time virtual exploring with you.
That is the best explore I've watched yet and I watch U. S, U. K and Spanish! Your introductions and information are excellent. With views like those I'm amazed that no one has renovated one of the houses for a holiday home. A really enjoyable video, thank you. Gill 🇬🇧
That Citroen was an amazing find I couldn’t believe that there was actually a car in the garage. Loved the video keep up the good work
Portugal is beautiful and so are the people, I love visiting there and every time a new experience. Sintra is so stunning ! Portugal is the only country I have been in that I would say is more beautiful than my own (Ireland) jbh! Portuguese people as so welcoming and friendly just like in Ireland! Can't wait to get back to visit when the restrictions are over .. mid to north Portugal is my favorite and so natural .. and those sunsets ....!!! Thank you for sharing!

Absolutely beautiful. Would love to live there, make some corn, wash my laundry on the washing board, bottle spring water, collect eucalyptus for the home, maybe take a bath in the river, and maybe even make wine to sell, simply adore this town. Great video and much appreciated.
In America the corn buildings would be called corn cribs. I really enjoy your posts. More so then any of the others that I watch.
Yes these guys are by far the best out of all the urbex and second best bros of decay. These are the only urbexers I watch now because of the sensativity and respect they have whilst exploring people's homes. They make everything so interesting, they cover it all
My father said in North Carolina the kids would gather up snakes in a sack to pour in the corn crib to chase out the rats. All the neighbors would stand around the crib and kill the rats as they ran away from the snakes. The event was called a rat killing’.
Live plants, people are there often. Maybe just for a weekend getaway. The first home you were in on the hill was being renovated. The landscape was freshly cut, new wood inside, power cord, etc. That last house is still used, it is too well maintained.
In Minnesota we call the thin fragile rock “shale”
It is shist or schist. When he said that is was shisto (?) I remembered and looked it up.
it's nice shist
Mica not nice. It's all over Portugal
the mountain road reminds me of the road going to baguio city here in the philippines..🤗 that place is superb..i would love to spend my whole summer vacation there with my family and friends..the scenery is so facinating..imagine waking up early in the morning seeing the sun shines and all the fogs around the mountain..haaa! its so breathe taking..this is one adds on my favorite videos from your chanel😉😉 thankyou for this and as always keep safe and stay healthy..☺️☺️ and btw you and danny were great so sad remon wasnt there..😌😌
Same thoughts, looks like the highway going up to La Presa, Greenvalley of Baguio City.
I lived in Baguio for 7 years and thought the same thing about the roads up that mountain. I now live in the province of La Union.
Same thought! 😂
Same thought! 😂
I was thinking the same I visited Baguio city it's like paradise 💓miss it so much 😓
Omg just watching that road had me on the edge of my couch 😱😱
I was getting so anxious just watching that drive on that skinny road. I’m trying to figure out how they got turned around to get out of there!
So nice to see Danny! This is one of my favorite videos. Of course because of the buildings but also because the landscape is so incredibly beautiful. I love the shade of the green grass ❤❤
Great explore! It amazes me that there is so much history hidden away in these remote areas. At the same time, it's sad to see the life taken away. I always believed that houses have souls, and when they're abandoned, that soul withers away from lonliness.
From the drone footage there are fields with vines that look well cared for. It may be that someone comes back to tend the fields and uses the house for the time they are there.
Wow! these houses made of stones are the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. historic village. thanks for sharing these adventures with us
Hi both it’s Ann again what a find so many people living in the little houses makes you wonder how they managed with so little then you come upon the larger house great find hope Raymond is feeling better stay safe my favourite exsplorers lv Ann x uk
Thank you sooo very much for sharing this beautiful, wonderful adventure!!! This was awesome!!! Loved the Portuguese wall tiles! The last home that you explored was in wonderful shape!!! The country side was beautiful! We do have similar beautiful landscapes & questionable roads here in the US...I’ve been on them. Pretty much 4wheel drive roads only! Thank you sooo very much for sharing this beautiful, wonderful adventure with us! What an enjoyable journey that we could have never taken without you ❤️
OMG I have only watched the first 11:33minutes and I am in love. To be able to come home to such beautiful nature and peace! To live off the land, create my art, dance in the rain and under the stars. Ok, now I get back to watch the rest of your video.🤗
This is the kind of place I would love to visit so thank you Explomo for taking me there. I believe the furnished house is still used for vacation from time to time and was last used in 2018. Stay safe God bless 🧡
Loved it! My grandparents were from Madeira. My grandmother owned all of the land that their airport was on. It’s a beautiful country. ❤️❤️
Seeing the 2018 calendar was an ackward thing which most of us never expected. Love from Tamilnadu, India
Dude, those last houses ar occupied. Maybe with people coming and going. It´s impossible to be abandoned and in that condition
Several thoughts came to mind while watching this. First, where did they buy gas for their vehicle cause that was a LONG road up that mountain. It wouldn't be good to run out of gas while there, ha ha. Second, there WAS electricity there because of light switches, refrigerators, etc. but WHERE did the power come from ( I mean how far away?) and third, We saw oranges but were there grape orchards also to make all that wine? Thanks for the tour guys....it is an awesome place. I think someone DID live there up until 2018. It's still a clean house.
to answer some things, in Portugal there are wind turbines that are fairly old on almost all mountains, as well there are many rivers where they use the power of the stream to get electricity. As well many houses had their own orchards and because people living in these villages are usually extended families or friends they would all make the wine together, since its an old tradition that we still have
@@toby-kj4vv Thanks for the info. I love viewing places like this that I would never see otherwise.
Welcome to Portugal. An country full of secrets and beautiful landscapes
This was such a COOL explore I had to prop my ipad up in the kitchen and burn my breakfast while I watched it. I ended up with only toast and coffee, the eggs were a total loss but it was worth it! Absolutely fascinating.
Eu amei esse lugar, parabéns Maureno e Danny, eu assisto todo dia um ou dois vídeos seus, pena não entender sua língua. Mas cada dia me surpreendo mais Sucesso rapazes! Sp Brasil
I love love love the stone buildings and it's incredible to think everything made of stone was laid one by one each stone at a time by hand. So incredible
Hello guys!! I absolutely loved this incredible explore. I could listen to your accents all day long especially yours Mureno. You are so fortunate to be able to visit these awesome places. Thank you for all your hard work. Love you ❤️
I find it fascinating that you are so in love with the scenery at the beginning of this video. The mountains in the distance are beautiful and the boulders are cool, but everything else is....ugly. The trees are scraggly....tall and sparse (like trees that grow in a strip mine...almost weeds) and the buildings you pass are run down and shack-like. Now the deserted town is incredible...love the stone walls and wildflowers! I really want to know more about the bubbling water. 😳
Was just as surprised as you were when you saw a car. I liked the pink room in the one room. Looked like a dining room. Great job guys. Hi from Maine USA.
Very interesting. You have to wonder what life was like living there. That calendar from 2018 shocked me. Do you think someone still lived there only 2 years ago?
I believe so, 1 of those house was so neat and not dusty
2 years ago??? Lol I believe the owners are coming back this summer
Live plants ...not abandoned .
Dig deeper, a more supernatural story happened, look up the origin of these cultures the same things that had tooken place here, happened to the African blacks, they enslaved an exiled many families without the blacks even gathering there property
Portugal is breathtakingly beautiful! Loved the mountains and the amazing scenery. The village was incredible! Considering how old some of the buildings, and they were still standing, is testament to how well they were constructed. Thank you for sharing this amazing video. ❤️
It’s called Corn Cribs. Corn is commonly grown for cattle feed throughout Portugal. Traditional corn cribs are still seen on smaller farms and particularly in poor, remote mountainous areas
If I have a ghost town to myself, I would have an epic hide and seek game with my good friends and just hang out.
Those plants in the one room are still alive. Someone might go up and visit from time to time. Dishes were covered with a cloth too.
This was very interesting. I couldn't tell if Danny said the water was warm in the catchment or cold but it would have been maybe spring fed. Someone must visit the house with the plants since they are still alive and looking really good. In the US the builds for corn storage are called Corn Cribs. Take care and stay safe you guys
Hello. From. The. UNITED. STATES. !!!! Love your channel. !!!!!!!
What an amazing find. I don't think you will ever find another place so fascinating. The history of this town must be so old. I cannot imagine how long this town was occupied. The drive to the town was similar to drives I have made in the mountains of the USA. There one can also find abandoned towns as well as individual homes. Great explore.
You always bring something new to your channel guys! That's why u are the best! 😍 big thanks 😁
Good place to live next to natural springs. The young go working in or near the city, older people left behind til they can farm no more becose of age,and so villages get abandoned.Sad. It happens everywere and becose of economics and the younger generation sometimes not willing to live the old ways.what would you prefere? Thanks for exploring and uploading !

In the US we call them Corn Cribs. The pioneers built learned to build them early on to best utilize corn. Love the village. Thanks.
Hi Mo, amazing adventure my friend such a beautiful abandoned village who would think it had so much left for us to see, I wonder why it is deserted what made the villagers leave. Thank you Maureno such a beautiful place.

That water is called a 'boils', it's where the spring forces the water up through the ground, artesian spring. I would guess that even though you didn't try the faucets, they probably do work, probably also the shower. Thank you for the video! I'm surprised you didn't take an orange or two & spring water is the best water in the world.

One of your best yet!! I'm so intrigued by this wonderful country. Thank you for this series of explores. Love!!
Whenever I watch your videos, I often think that there are so many refugees across the world needing places to start communities, these places could come to life with money from the EU, and they could start their own businesses. Portugal needs younger generations to keep it going.

This is what New Zealand looks like in a lot of places but we don't need to drive miles to see this. We are very blessed here ☺
oh my..what an amazing video ! I ABSOLUTELY loved this one. Beautiful country views & the car was something I wasn't expecting. Thank you for sharing your wonderful videos. Be careful & stay safe. But the plants kinda make me wonder...they look good, not dying, so someone (?) has to be watering & caring for them. I love plants/flowers & have a LOT of them & know if I don't care for them they'll start turning brown & dying. That one place looks great, nice & clean.
Your wonderful video reminds me of my trip to Pompeii in 1967. Wonderful video. Yes, I agree. Perhaps a caretaker because the plants are still alive. Some of these homes look like they were owned by wealthy people while others looked to be owned by poor people. Narrow roads built way before cars. Still, lovely area to see. Thank you.
