At long last it is finally time to return to the History of the Earth! Picking up where we left off at the end of the Permian and taking our first steps into the next major chapter in the story of our world. And we see how the stem mammals form the previous era begin to lose their grip on the world because it seems the planet itself is working against them. There is only one massive continent called Pangea, which causes drought conditions world wide and will push the already stressed survivors of the great dying even further as they attempt to gain control of a largely vacant desert world. This all leads to the reptiles having an advantage in this new hot environment. Setting the tone for the next 230 million years.

  • I adore this series and I genuinely think it’s largely because the care and effort you put in shines through. A little bit of perfectionism can be good, so long as it isn’t making you miserable. Art that means something will always be at least a bit of a struggle. Fighting a project isn’t a sign of failure or weakness, it’s usually a sign of growth. Thank you for making and sharing your work, it’s really inspiring. The Complete History is the first time I’ve really been able to learn this topic in a way that sticks. You have the ability to make all the content information dense but also engaging, which is rare. You’re an amazing teacher. Your videos have also had a personal effect for me…this is the first time that the previous mass extinctions have been put into a perspective I can comprehend.. and honestly it’s been a HUGE part of my learning to make peace with the current state of the world. So I’m deeply grateful for that. Sorry to be so verbose and maybe over the top, I just needed you to know that what you do and the care you put into it is a true gift to the world. Take care of yourself, take your time, keep it up. We’ll be here :)

  • While this is the late Triassic, I would just like to point out that if you stepped into the waters of the Chinle Formation, you would encounter 11 different species of Phytosaur with some of them like Redondasaurus becoming more terrestrial and being about as big as a Postosuchus, any of the three absolutely massive Smilosuchus species which are the first, second, and fourth largest phytosaurs to ever live dwarfing even the saltwater crocodile. Not to mention any of the other phytosaur species. On top of this you could also run into the 3 meter long amphibian Anaschisma. And finally on top of all of that there’s the otter sized Vancleavea. Needless to say how all of these species were able to coexist for some 20 million years astonishes me.

  • This series is exemplary of some of the best science communication that is physically possible on this platform. Never sacrificing content for humor or for sound bites, while simultaneously remaining fun and digestible. I think it takes a very specific personality and a well-honed set of skills to be able to relay the amount of information this series does without it turning into a slog of an info dump, and you do it flawlessly and expertly. For someone who doesn’t have a degree in life sciences but is slightly more knowledgeable that an average person, this show strikes the absolute perfect balance - I’m learning lots of things at a depth and breadth that mainstream documentaries don’t cover, but I don’t feel like I needed four courses of prerequisites to understand what’s going on. Just truly excellent. I very rarely contribute in online spaces, but this series made me subscribe to your patreon. You’re a goddamn inspiration sir.

And yes this gets more important in the middle/late triassic just like the Archosaurs, but since this is the first time our walking motion started on this earth, and how it changed literally everything about how predators worked in the years to come, i felt like it was important! Glad to see you back on the evolution path! Hopefully TimTim won't get eaten on the way there

He has a soft spot for turtles because they remind him of his tough outer shell, rich inner life, and that he’s struggles to get up when he’s on his back like a turtle. • Many of the Archosauroformes of the early to mid Triassic weren't actually ectothermic but were instead mesothermic. This meant that they had an increased metabolism and an internal temperature that was above their suroundings but their internal temperature still veried with the external temperature. Animals that were mesotherms were thought to have an advantage over true ectotherms because they grew faster and can therefore reproduce sooner which was advantageous in the extremely unpredictible environments of pangea. The mesothermic matabolism wasn't as taxing as a fully endothermic matabolism was so it became widely successful through this time. Later on in the triassic the archosaur clades that would lead to both Dinosaurs and crocodilians gradually grew higher and higher metabolisms until dinosaurs achieved a fully endothermic metabolism and the crocodilomorpha clades somewhere down the line reverted back to an ectothermic metabolism. The animals at the very stem of the crocodilomorpha clade had the highest metabolisms of all the psudosucian while more derived decendance later reverted back to an ectothermic metabolism. For a semiaquatic ambush predator that relies on animals off shore for food, having an ectothermic metabolism is advantageous for the reasons the narator mensions.
