In this video I build a neat fireplace mantel that is installed over some vertical shiplap. I top it off with some crown molding and base molding. I show each step of the process and of course insert my really good dad jokes along the way.

This is the first comment I’ve ever written on this channel, but holy crap. Maybe sounds corny, but I grew up teaching myself how to be a finish carpenter and cabinet maker through KZhead, and mikes channel has taught me so many of the things I know today, and has alway and will always be my favorite channel to watch. I now own a construction company that specializes in finish carpentry, and although not the only person I look up to, you’re definitely one of the people that I aspire to be in my career. I respect your work immensely, and look forward to whatever comes out next!Thank you so much for the content!
Must love Mike. Dude sparks so much joy. I just had a really rough go at a project in the shop and sat down to recharge and seeing this video made all that go away.
Thank you for the kind words and thank you for sharing. Its great to hear that my videos are of some good use.
The dad jokes in this video were on point!
Thank you.
I really enjoyed watching this project come together and thank goodness the dolphin was flogged 😅
Ha! Thank you.
Legend has it that every single item Mike has ever bought has gone through the mighty table saw.
This is true.
I think I gained like 5 yrs of lifespan with the Medium Density Farrington joke.
Ha! happy to help.
And now I know the collective noun for Construction Adhesive.
Thank you.
The man, the myth, the voice.
Ha! Thank you.
Medium Density Farrington... great nickname and great video
Ha! Thank you.
Step one is to take the first step 😂😂😂😂 love it dude
Ha! Thanks John.
ALWAYS enjoy following along!
Thank you.
Love those fun little projects that make a big impact. November Rain was the song we used for our first dance at our wedding 28 years ago! Thanks for sharing
Thank you. Thats a great first dance song.
Wow. You have a way with words. Al throughout this video there are many quotable phrases you said!
Wow, thank you!
i only cuss on the internet once a week...but making an exception...shoot that is beautiful...well done...love these types of videos
Ha! Thank you.
Clearance to combustibles around the firebox look legit, nice work. It's remarkable how often people get it wrong when updating the look of a fireplace.
Thank you.
I really enjoy the precision and neatness of your shop and work. I'm heading out now to clean up my garage purely because I watched this vid. I'll also blast some gunners as a tribute. They were defiantly not a glam-rock band. Their songs told a story, glam is just big hair and repeat the same verse over and over and over. The bike shorts may have crossed the line though. "what we have here is a failure to communicate...🙂🤘
Thank you.
Man your the best wood worker out there broski
Thank you.
Gonna say not hair metal band. Great build my man!
Thank you. Agreed.
No G&R were not a hair metal band, they were a heavy rock band. Appetite for Destruction was my coming of age music!
Agreed. I was 7 years old, and I can still tell you the exact place I first saw/heard Paradise City (MTV).
Mike, it’s gorgeous as always. I take your example as the goal I aspire to. As someone who is probably the same age as you, I have no shame in saying that.
Thank you.
Yes. My woodworking teacher Frank Derkits always told me "don't try to hide what won't stay hidden." Thanks Mike.
That is good advice.
GNR + your woodworking earned you a sub. use your illusion tour. Saw GNR live with Metallica in Buffalo ny in 92. Of course November Rain was performed.
Thank you very much, welcome aboard.
Mike the mantel master
Thank you.
I love the spring-loaded nail set! Among other things about this video. Lol.
Thank you. A game changer tool.
Solid proof that MDF is not evil. The wood, not you, Mike. I'll leave that for someone else to decide.
Ha! Thank you very much.
This is the first I've heard/seen of your channel. I'm impressed by your presentation as well as your narration. I have two fireplace mantels/hearths that are in dire need of replacement. You make it appear rather easy, but I know better! Elegant!
Wow, thank you!
When I glue my miters I apply even coats on each piece and then I let it sit for 2 minutes by the clock. Usually most of the glue gets sucked in . I the apply one more coating of glure on one of the peice. This leaves more glue in the miter and I get a stronger bond.
Good info. I glue both sides and I do it kinda slow, attempting the same thing.
love all those clamps!
Those clamps are the bees knees.
Mike, great build. I love tucking away all the pro tips you pepper your content with, dude. Also, I agree with the other commenters, and say that as a former and still-recovering Californian, G-n-R is not hair metal. They kinda defined their own niche when they got big. Also, it's hard to poof your hair and do stage makeup when you're that high. Still a G-n-R fan.
Thank you. I agree. Feels like there was a point in history where GnR would have been called hair metal. Maybe 10 years ago. Today, I look back on them as a hard rock band.
YES! A Mike Farrington Christmas Special! Since Apple TV has secured the rights to the Charles Schultz library this will have to do!
Ha! Thank you.
Excellent job! I happen to have a 70’s fireplace that looks very much like the one you covered. Now I know how to cover up the abundance of brick. Thank you!!
Thank you.
I once worked for a cabinet maker that had a contract to do all the fireplace mantels in a housing development. All I did was to cut parts on the table saw. Lots of parts. It was more fun watching this video. Thank you for sharing Mike. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
Thank you.
I don't know why that opening was so damn funny, but it had me in stitches. And of course, wonderful work as usual.
Ha! Thank you.
Extra points awarded for creating woodworking videos that incorporate attractive design!
Ha! Thank you.
MDF... kewl, thanks for sharing your expertise with us.
My pleasure.
In my opinion Guns N' Roses probably started off as a hair/glam band but then evolved into a straight rock band. When Appetite and Lies came out, they had the look of glam, but the sound was much more complex and edgier than the hair bands of the day. By the time Illusion game out, they were totally hard rock. If the original lineup (including Izzy and either Matt or Steven on drums) had stayed together, I believe they would be as iconic in the rock scene as the Stones, Zeppelin or The Who. BTW, great build as usual!
I agree !! I gave a similar comment further up. The proof is, the music still holds up respectfully...
Very good take, and good info. I agree.
I truly love how much of a Biscuit Joiner evangelist you are. Definitely an underrated tool.
Ha! I like jousting that windmill.
Dude! This is awesome... I've been watching many of your videos the last couple of weeks. Love the production, narration, and especially the level of detail and creativity on your builds! You, sir, are a great teacher! Here is my LIKE!
Thank you very much. I really appreciate it.
Mike, this stuff is so cool! Love these videos.
Glad you like them!
I like the V groove trim bit idea. I will be stealing that one and claiming it for my own.
Please do. I stole it from somewhere as well.
I appreciate your meticulous attention to detail - that job is just tickety boo.
Thank you.
Beautiful as always
Thank you.
At the time, being a fan, i would have fought anyone who suggested GnR was a hair band. Now, upon reflection, there is no doubt they were.
Good take. thank you.
Beautiful!
Thank you.
Thanks, Mike. Great to see you tackle a project that I've done at least a half dozen times over the years. I liked the "nickel gap" ship lap! I was surprised--after watching your vid on dust collection--that you didn't wear a mask while cutting MDF. However, I've found by experience that MDF dust and boogers make great nail hole filler! Always a pleasure to watch you work.
That was me just being lazy. I really should wear a mask. I like to booger idea, I'll give that one a try.
Wonderful job sir! Love what you did there. I just completed a fireplace mantle, custom cabinetry, Shiplap, crown, floors, marble, baseboards, oak stair treads, stain, new drywall ceiling and painting. I must say, this was one of my best looking projects, but the clients were the worst. Took all the pleasure and satisfaction out of my job. I hate looking at the pictures and started deleting them, to erase the memories.
Thank you. Customers can make or break a project.
Mike, your tips and technique have helped me with projects that would otherwise look crappy. Thank you for sharing your wisdom, humor, and perspective. Oh, and nice work, as always. You'll certainly be a pro-carpenter when you grow up. ;)
Thank you very much.
They played the hair metal band game that I’m sure their label told them to at first, but it didn’t last long. They sort of morphed into the leathery biker gang look later on. GREAT song btw. I remember when the two-parter music video came out, or should I say short film. It was a cinematic event on MTV.
Thank you, agreed.
Beautiful work mike
Thank you kindly
"lesson learned: don't make mistakes." LOL!
Ha!
Beautiful work. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you! Cheers!
I learned so much from this. Thank you for all the detailed video and voice over. Top notch work.
Thank you.
As always! Sweet work!
Thank you.
It's mind blowing when you learn that the first step in any process is to take the first step 😆
Ha.
1:58 in, people suggested using a nickel but all you had was a credit card made me laugh out loud fareal!
Ha! Happy to hear you liked that one. I thought it was clever.
10-4 on the crown!
Thank you.
Three quick comments. One, I've built a lot of stuff with MDF and oh do I hate MDF. Two, love the oh so subtle plug for the sanding disk. And three, I wish I could build and then let the painters paint. I always get stuck with that job too and its one of my least favorite. As always, the final product looks terrific. Excellent job.
Agree with you about using MDF and hating it. At one stage I vowed I'd never use the horrible dusty stuff again, but only a couple of years later I found I just couldn't justify staying away from it. It does have a lot of benefits. It's the dust and weight of the panels I abhor. Cheers, David
Thank you. I do a lot of painting, fortunately, not on this one.
Beautiful work
Thank you.
Sorry late to the party, really nicely done.
Thank you.
Awesome job. You are right it is a beautiful country site
Thank you.
Nice build Mike.
Thanks 👍
Another great video Mike!
Thanks again!
Beautiful work.
Thank you.
Why do I all of a sudden feel the urge to go for a jog?
Ha!
Gun's& Roses to me always was a post hair metal transition to grunge band. Not that they necessarily played music related to those genre but that the time in which they existed was during that change in style. Poison to nirvana basically. BTW I've never once seen a wood worker use those "Collin's clamps" before, very handy. Very much a soft "g." Also, never treat us to less Caveman speak. no like words, words hard, make brain hurt.
Thank you very much.
Great work Miguel 😁🙌🙌
Thank you.
Absolutely Beautiful 🤝
Thank you! Cheers!
If for some reason you can’t do carpentry anymore, or want a change in your life, you could do voice overs. Your voice has a very nice, calming and distinct tone.
Thank you very much. I have looked in to it, its not an easy field to get into, at least from what I found.
OK mike, I see you. Some new camera angles (on the biscuit joiner) and some new sound effects and graphics. Love the video as usual, thank you!
Trying to add some spice.
Love your work Mike
Thank you.
I wish I had the ability to work to that level of quality. Very nice.
Thank you.
Wow Mike excellent work
Thank you.
Guns n roses came on the scene and completely changed the whole "hair band" movement. From sweet n pretty to hard & raunchy. For my money they were a straight up rock band , who happened to have long hair...
Totally agree. Well said.
As per usual there was as many (new to me) pro tips as there was our generation pop references. Fantastic enough outcome with the mantle that it actually made the brick look fashionable! It makes me want to shout from the top of a mountain, but I don’t have a mountain I have a KZhead comment section
Thank you very much.
I’m going to assume that your home is a glass cage of emotion. Also, you have many leather bound books and it smells of rich mahogany.
Haha. I also have a dog that speaks Spanish.
Your work is superb!
Thank you! Cheers!
I fondly remember a previous mantlepiece installation you filmed, complete with a moment of sheer panic... that you conveyed quite well (and silently!). Had something to do with gluing something out of order. I think of that moment whenever I see a mantle build. I gotta get me one of them spring-loaded nail-setter thingys. Quite tired of marring a carefully-created finish with hammer blows from missing the nail head.
Thank you. Yeah, the spring nail sets are a must.
I'm baffled nobody jumped in the music discussion. Personally, I wouldn't consider GnR as a glam/hair metal band. They were really ahead for those years and they've experimented a lot (trash, symphonic, punk influences are all over the place). If you compare them to Poison/Mötley Crüe/Cinderella you clearly see the music lines are miles away from said bands. Another similar group I can think of are Skid Row, highly recommended especially during the grunge era (Slave to the grind hits easily my top 10 albums). Ah, almost forgot: amazing fireplace, great video and plenty of details. Thanks for sharing, Best!
Thank you. I agree, I think GnR was considered a hair metal band because that was the era. Guilt by association, but as time marches on I think the common view has changed.
Meticulous work as always! I may be also wanting to become a carpenter myself one day but for now I'll enjoy what I do currently :) Congratulations, the mantle came out fantastic 😍
Thank you.
MDF 😂 and I took a break to eat a plum. Hilarious as usual, thanks my friend. Used my DT sanding disc for the first time lately. Highly recommend. Just had a 10 pack of refills delivered too.
That is great to hear. Thank you very much.
Mike your not carpenter, your a cabinet maker, and a damn good one. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you.
This guys awesome.
Thank you.
man I'm getting that bit!!! I could've used it on my bathroom vanity build.
Thats a good one.
dynaflex 230. great looking job.
Thank you.
Beautiful
Thank you.
We had a radial arm saw like that in my high school shop class...two dudes were screwing around and weren't paying attention and one of them cut their hand off...I didn't see it because it was a few years before I was in the class, but I never used that saw...
I watched a kid lower a car onto his finger, cause his finger was on top of the jack stand, in auto shop. Radial arm saws are dangerous, but they are really dangerous if you aren't paying attention, or don't have experience.
Thank you for the Video! Wonderful job!! I think the Client should have rendered the brickwork somehow to compliment ur beautiful work better!
Thank you. The project isn't totally completed, a firebox is being installed, and I don't know if something will be done with the brick. That is above my pay grade.
Nice video MDF!
Thank you.
Guns and Roses not a hair band. They rocked and were appreciated by loads of folks including flattops, which I was, a generation ago.
Thank you very much.
inspirational
Thank you.
Very nice work
Thank you.
Awesome Mike!
Thank you.
MDF is the OG....I mean Ogee.
Ha!
I don’t G-n-R was a hair metal band. Just my opinion. Great work and in the video as always!! I enjoy your content and humor.
Thank you very much.
Looks like it was always meant to be there. So great job Mike! :)
Thank you.
Beautiful Mike! Thanks
Thank you.
Very cool. What a transformation. Love it!
Thank you.
Stellar work as always Mike! Keep'em comin'!
Thanks! Will do!
Love your work and your channel Mike. Keep up the great work 😁
Thank you.
Looks great!
Thank you.
Great vid as always
Thank you.
