In this video I build an Arts and Crafts fireplace mantel. This is my second fireplace mantel video and I thought it was different enough from my last one, that it would be neat to have the two similar projects yet two totally different outcomes. I start by selecting the best looking materials for the front of the legs and move on to building the structure. I use a biscuit joiner for the joinery tasks, and I spend a good amount of time show how I build the various details that give this fireplace mantel an Arts and Crafts feel. I finish the video by showing in detail how I fit and attach the mantel to the existing fireplace. I hope you are at least moderately entertained and better yet, pick up a couple useful tips.

  • As the owner of this house I can say that we absolutely LOVE our new fireplace and couldn't say enough about Mike's work and his professionalism. Also, Mike, that would not have been the first F-bomb dropped in our bungalow. Not even close. Your work is outstanding and it's so cool to be able to see the whole process on here. Thanks!

  • I helped a friend (with my truck) pick up 2 tons of white oak he had milled. In return, he gave me a dozen 6/4 x 20" x 10' boards...some are quartersawn and have the rays as you pointed out. Having also lived in Colorado, I know the "dry" reference...many a bloody nose till I learned a few trick (humidifier and some chapstick up the nose!).

  • Perfection...that is nice, but you said something I consider today "brillant", when I was young, one day I was in a discussion with a stranger, I don't recall exactly the situation, but the old man asked me, if I would rather be good or lucky, I answered like an idiot, I want to be so good I want to be the best, today I feel I totally messed up, you made the best comment, better be lucky than good...but nobody can deny the fact that your very good also!
