20 years ago I would have said you are definitely right. 10 years ago I would have said you are probably right. Now? Look at how favorably the GOP voters think of strong man autocracies. Hungary isn't in a simple position with economic concerns, NATO/EU on one side, and an obviously aggressive Putin on the other. He has worked that position to his advantage. Convince enough US voters that they are in a similar rock-and-hard place and it's *possible* those tactics would work here, among other possibilities. Say the GOP are crazy, as I think as well, but the election is still an open contest for their insanity to take hold.

I’m Hungarian and I can assure you I or anyone I know from family friends loved ones or just the people I ever crossed path with are not acting or thinking remotely close to what our lawmakers foreign minister and especially the prime minister does or says. Please don’t believe that the hard working amazing Hungarians are all agree with the Hungarian government and leadership. We are friendly and open minded people. When people fled Germany during the late 70’s and 80’s look up please how we welcomed everyone the first day asking for asylum we gave them citizenship and residency place to stay and neighbors coming together bringing whatever we could share till families could stand on their own feet the first few months. I remember my grandparents teaching me cook large amounts of dinner and lunch and we brought it to our new neighbors who were forced to leave Germany to survive. And from many other countries during war time. Please don’t believe that Hungarians are this conservatives and bigoted. Our history and reputation, to Honor our heroes who fought and died for our freedom for hundreds of years on and off is close to a primary priority to us. For someone like Orban Victor winning elections this many times with as much majority he always does while loudly and proudly flexing the polar opposite dictatorship mentality is puzzling and makes no sense. But that’s just me trying questioning things to make sense out of it. Since Orban Victor changed a complete 180° and turned into this communist bigoted toxic mentality of only white only Christian’s only straight bs I’m embarrassed every time he is in the news. My grandparents did not survived horrible times and worked hard with integrity honesty and as power of examples for the young generation to come for this. I started researching Orban the first time Trump mentioned his name. I had to see who Trump was aligning himself with. The fact that Trump wants to be Orban's mini-me, doesn't set well. Hungary was one of the worst scofflaws to NATO from 2010-2022. They averaged about only 0.8%. of their GDP to military spending. Only in 2023 did they spend more than the stipulated 2%. That was only after great pressure from NATO allies about Hungary getting a free ride. So according to Trump the US should let Russia just roll into Hungary without any defense support. So hypocritic to make Orban some icon while disparaging NATO allies on the frontline. Does Orban agree with Trump that the US should just let Russian tanks roll in like in 1956?

In his own video message, Trump confidant Steve Bannon described Hungary as “an inspiration to the world” and called Orbán “one of my heroes in the world today, in addition to President Trump.” After Trump’s loss in 2020, “American conservatives started to look for what would be a successful conservative governing agenda,” said Gladden Pappin, a conservative political theorist who moved from Dallas to Budapest and now leads the Hungarian Institute of International Affairs, a state-run research organization. “When American conservatives look to Hungary, they see a prime minister in a government that actually delivered on the slogans that they promised.” In his opening speech at the CPAC conference in Budapest last week, Orbán endorsed former President Donald Trump’s reelection bid and painted this year’s elections in the US and European Union in militaristic terms. Over his 14 years in power, Orbán has transformed Hungary into a laboratory for conservative policies and eroded democratic rights and civil society protections, according to his critics and European Union officials. Orbán has centralized power by dismissing judges, changing election rules to favor his party, cracking down on NGO’s and appointing loyalists to key institutions. His government built a fence along the country’s southern border amid a migrant crisis in 2015 and passed stricter immigration policies. It tightened its grip on state media, reducing space for dissent. The prime minister has also promoted a Christian nationalist view of Hungarian society, passing laws restricting transgender rights and adoption by same-sex couples, redefining marriage in the constitution to only cover unions between a man and a woman, and banning materials related to LGBTQ issues in schools. Ron DeSantis’ policies limiting the discussion of LGBTQ issues in schools was inspired by the Orbán government. In Budapest, critics of Orbán’s regime argued in interviews with CNN that Americans should see Hungary as a warning sign - not a model to emulate. Zsuzsanna Szelényi, who was once a member of Orbán’s political party but broke with him and now works at a pro-democracy group, said that the policies the prime minister is pushing have stripped away Hungarians’ fundamental rights. Orbán has pushed rhetoric about LGBTQ issues and migrants to avoid talking about “the problems with our hospitals, the problems of our social care services, the problems of the teachers, the problems of all of these essential institutions of the country, which are in a deep, deep trouble right now,” said Márton Gulyás, a left-leaning political commentator who runs a popular KZhead channel. But some of the American conservatives who flew into the country for CPAC seemed more focused on the optics of Budapest than on democratic rights.
