Friso and Mabel were married at the Oude Kerk, Delft and was not without controversy. Mabel was alleged to have been in a relationship with a drug lord, and when questioned, the couple gave the Prime Minister answers which he thought was incomplete and incorrect information. The government did not ask permission from the Dutch Parliament for the Prince to marry. Friso and Mabel married regardless, causing Friso to loose his place in the line of succession, therefore becoming a Prince of Orange-Nassau.

  • Being British I do not know much of other royal families so thank you for this story, although containing a tragedy. Mabel's dress was absolutely beautiful, the bows and trellis design perfect for taking away the flat look of so many wedding dresses and yet remaining elegant.

    • I m Dutch and i find it a beautiful dress .Mabel looks gorgeous in that dress and she gave Victor and Rolf a chance.You like it or you hate it.There are so many brides that looks absolutely plain.One ugly ill fitting dress was the ragland dress.But thats my opinion.

  • She obviously liked her dress and that’s all that matters. Personally I wouldn’t have had the large bows on the train but that’s just my opinion - others may find it attractive. I didn’t like Diana’s dress but again, it’s what she wanted and it was her prerogative to wear what she liked.

  • In my opinion, the bows got too big and were distracting. They seemed so happy, so in love. He gave up his line of succession for her and died 18 months after a skiing accident. How terrible and sad. The Netherlands is dear to my heart as my mom was from Holland.

  • Prince Friso got caught in an avalanche . leaving his wife with two small daughters. He died in the Royal Hospital for Incurables in Putney/Wandsworth , London , and Queen Beatrix used to visit her son regularly thee . The hospital staff did their best, but Prince Friso never recovered conscious ness properly-- a bit like Michael Schumacher

    • The toile for Diana's dress was on display in a local museum to me and even though it wasn't in that awful silk she chose it still looked terrible - and I was the same age as Diana, I don't remember ANY other wedding dresses as bad as her's despite claims it was ''all the fashion''. Anne and Sarah married at the same time - or within a short time at least - and their dresses were elegant and beautiful. The dress here (apart from the big bows right at the end of the train but it was the brides choice to add them presumably) was beautiful and the bows actually ADDED something to what would otherwise have been a very very plain - but which suited her perfectly - style.

  • It was her choice and it certainly is a huge improvement on the dress Diana chose, a crumpled mass that overwhelmed her and looked like something a young girl would design, it was frumpy and over the top and the only outfit she ever looked bad in.

  • It’s hard to say how much control the bride has over her dress. I don’t believe Princess Di had much input on her dress, she wore it because it was expected.

  • I didn't like the large bows! I didn't know Mabel's story, very sad to loose Frisco but I'm glad she and her daughters are still a part of the Dutch Royal Family.

  • At least their marriage did not turn out like Edward viiI (later Duke of Windsor and Wallis Simpson OR Prince Harry and Meghan Markle! I always felt bad for Prince William, the son of Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester; who did not give up his place in the line of succession, before his death (in 1972 ... His family was fighting the match -- He was not in the direct line***). He really loved that woman! The current Duke of Gloucester (Prince Richard, age 28 at his brother's death; now age 44) is the late Prince William's younger brother. [Prince William's father, who had been very ill before Prince William's death lived only 2 years after William's death. His mother, (born Lady Alice Christabel Montagu Douglas Scott (1901 - 2004) died at 102 years old. She outlived the Queen Mum by 2 years. the Queen Mum was 101years old when she died. Princess Alexandra, The Honourable Lady Ogilvy is currently 87 years old. She is the daughter of the late Prince George of Kent and the Princess Marina (of Greece) who were the Duke and Duchess of Kent. The late Kent's oldest son is Prince Edward of Kent (age 88) He is the very old man in red military uniform that has been seen at most royal events. His younger brother is Prince Michael of Kent (age 81) His wife is a German/Hungarian/Czech countess (Christine) who is known as Princess *Michael* of Kent (she was not born as a royal, so her "Princess" HRH is due to her husband's status -- Thus his name, not hers. And this bride’s dress was sweet, imo. Sadly, one Princess who could have looked fabulous in a beautiful wedding gown would have been Princess Diana. The person who created that mess of a dress should have had their thumbs lopped off!

    • That's nonsense. Diana had tremendous input into her dress, and in 1980, it was considered to be beautiful. I was a very young American woman when I watched her wedding on television in the US, and I thought her dress was perfect. You may think it was too flouncy, as many brides now prefer sleeker dresses, but for its time, it was beautiful, and perfect for her.
