Where can I find the whole "open matte" version movie?
i NEED THIS OPEN MATTE VERSION
What does this "open matte" mean, in laymen's terms? I have recently watched The Terminator in a great remastered blu ray version, but it had horizontal borders on top and at bottom as most films has on my 16:9 screen. Would love to have more movies actually use all of my screen space but not if some of the picture is cropped. Just trying to understand if "open matte" is like a "Best of two worlds" kind of thing :)

I like how when the terminators arrive, they appear stoicly, with elegance, as they stand up and analyze the world around them. But when humans arrive, they miserably flop on the ground like a fish out of water
What do you expect from a machine that has no feelings or remorse. Going through the time displacement device was like walking through a door for terminators
It gives the impression that the machines knew exactly what they were doing when they sent T-800 back, but the humans were basically just guessing with Kyle.

Michael Biehn is the under appreciated action hero of the 80s
He is just one of the most under appreciated actors of all time. His roles in The Terminator and Aliens, should have made him a star. Jim Cameron actually fired another actor originally playng Hicks and told his then wife and producer Gale Anne Hurd, to call Michael Biehn and offer him the part. He was flown to England and started shooting the next day.
Always will be my favorite action hero.

He played a pretty good villain in Abyss too.

This scene is great. It shows how painful time travel is for a human, but for a terminator it's nothing.
For a terminator, time travel is the equivalent of a nice night for a walk.
It may sometimes depend on the time machine. The machine in Terminator is a huge “weapon” so it makes sense for a human to be in pain from using it, whereas if it were like a walk-in pod, maybe the trip would be less painful/overwhelming, just a bit of a daze.

They then step onto a magnetic platform & giant rings begin to gyrate around the subject, gradually picking up speed until the rings form an orb. This creates massive arcs of energy, which proceed to strike the subject. The gel eventually burns into a fine white powder by the time the subject arrives at its destination. That's the reason for the excruciating pain Reese was in when he arrived. Landing on solid pavement didn't help either!
Always loved how the cops’ flashlights hovering in the background searching for Reese are allusions to the HKs in the future. Great visual symbolism for Reese: he’s always being hunted no matter what.

Patrick Caville Yeah they’re also the one in T3, but specifically in T1 they are seen in the future war where there are HK drones flying around using their spotlights to spot survivors. There’s a scene where Kyle Reese is chased while in a car and get blown by the HK.
I always thought it was convenient that while the future had nothing but rubble, you'd spend most your time crouched and running around. I always thought that in my mind as how he escaped the cops in the store.
"I came across time for you, Sarah." One of the best romantic lines of all time, and he delivered it perfectly.
Just a shame Kyle does appear in only one scene in T2

I like how this opening scene illustrates Kyle’s stealth. Not a sound made while grabbing resources. All to imply Kyles hellish life of hiding from the machines.
Yeah. Still beats me how he somehow broke into a police car, stole a shotgun, and ran off without the police even knowing. Obviously, the new technology makes breaking into a police car without being noticed, not mentioning stealing weapons and escaping without a trace, near impossible to do, but I'm pretty it was still extremely hard in the 80s. But he was raised in an apocalyptic land and had to sneak around just to evade machinery, so I guess he had an advantage with that.

Love the detail at 4:11 where he runs out of the alley with the shotgun and the two inconsequential people in the background at a distance immediately slowdown and hug the wall.

Biehn’s’ Reece is paranoid, scared, intense, wired and absolutely brilliant. You really get the feeling he’s on edge, about to snap, and is in pain after being hurtled into 1984 New York from the future. Maybe Mr Bland who played him in the dour Genysis should’ve taken more notes...

This is great on so many levels. I like how the LA of 1984 is portrayed as a terrifying wasteland on par with the post-apocalyptic future. It also demonstrates that Kyle Reese is an extremely intelligent and resourceful soldier. This confirms that he is the best person the Resistance could have sent back to 1984.
From Reese's point of view he was taken from one nightmare he was familiar with to a new unknown nightmare.

Michael Biehn said in an interview about 4 years ago that this scene--where his stunt double falls naked on the cement--was one of the hardest stunts he had ever witnessed. The stuntman fell about 6 feet onto the cement without any padding or protection. It is actually hard to watch. 0:27

Michelino Sports Drugs ? I never read that anywhere . I know he had problems with alcohol though. The original actor cast to play Hicks in Aliens (James Remar) was fired for problems to do with drug use. Then obviously replaced by Michael Biehn.

I know the mainstream audience prefer T2. I get it. Its a fun, buddy-buddy action movie. But in my opinion the original Terminator movie is by far the best one.
2-4-5 TRIOXIN: The difference imo is that T1 is a SciFi/Horror movie and T2 is SciFi/Action. I liked T2 but loved T1.
I loved T1 in the theater in 1984, and have loved it since. When I finally watched T2 recently, I could only stand 30 minutes before going straight to the ending. It's an awful movie.
I watched T2 before T1. It honestly boils down to your tastes - if you like horror, T1 does it best. Meanwhile T2 is more explosions and action.
Sam Brasel Yes. T1 and T2 are very different movies. T1 = outmatched humans vs unstoppable monster. T2 = good monster vs bad monster. I find the whole Dyson subplot in T2 to be very long and very boring. The subplot in T2 also breaks the pace and build up of tension. The original movie keeps the pace and tension build up going from start to finish. Its always focused on the outmatched protagonists trying desperately to stay one step ahead of the Terminator. In T2 the pace and tension build up is broken when the story deviates into the Dyson subplot. Also in T2 the protagonists have an actual Terminator to protect them. The protagonists in T1 are more vulnerable. They have nothing to protect themselves except trying to take pot shots at the Terminator to slow it down so they can put some space between themselves and it. And the weapons they have are basically useless. Its bloody brilliant. T1 is the perfect Terminator movie really. The whole movie is 100 percent focused on the outmatched protagonists, desperately trying to stay one step ahead of the Terminator, and gradually we see the Terminator waring them down and catching up to them, right up to the point where the Terminators figers are inches away from Sarah's throat. The film is brilliantly done. T1 is humans vs machine. Simple, focused, perfectly paced and intense. T2 is machine vs machine and mother and son. Its drama with over the top flashy action scenes, fun and humour thrown in.
@@sbrasel You must be the first person I've ever seen who said T2 is bad. Wow. But I am gonna admit that it's overappreciated. Try watching the movie thoroughly before you judge if you haven't yet. I'll say they made John Connor way too whiny (I get that he's a kid, but he hardly developed at all throughout the film) my second biggest issue with it is the dragging Miles Dyson side plot, but it was also the strongest at the same time.

I always felt sorry for Reese. Imagine coming from a world you are comfortable with and being transported through time to a world you only read or heard about. You have no place in that world you don't know anyone. Your all alone and on top of that you must protect a 19 year old woman with only your skills and a shotgun against a almost unstoppable cyborg

Yes, but I love the idea that no one cares what she carries under her sweater and they don't see the barrel sticking out. Watching The Shawshank Redemption? There, no one even saw the prisoner come out of the cell in patent-leather shoes. Because nobody looks at the shoes. It's the same story with Grace, you can walk around with a gun under a sweater as much as you like, but no one will notice.
Tbh, Grace had stolen some clothes to masquerade as a security guard.
Here's something you might find interesting: Take a close look at Kyle when he first arrives. He has scars and bruises all over his body, he looks worn out and emaciated and his physique is borderline average and unassuming -- it's details like these that make you believe he actually does come from a post-apocalyptic future. Then go over to his laughable portrayal in Genisys -- he's jacked, hale and there's not even a single scar or bruise on him. Jai Courtney's bad acting notwithstanding, there's no way in hell he could convince you that a soldier from a post-apocalyptic future could look that clean and healthy. Amazing how much of a difference a little worldbuilding can make, isn't it?

@@DeDasilva81 I very much disagree. If it was Biehn then they would’ve taken advantage of it and not obscured his landing with the cop car. They’d want to show off the fact that it’s him. Also, just because he CAN do the stunt doesn’t mean that they’d want to use him. If something even slightly goes wrong then that’s one of the lead actors injured and filming severely affected. This is primarily why they use stunt actors, not to do what actors can’t, but because actors are too essential to risk injuring.

Imagine yourself being Kyle Reese. You're sent though time and space to a place you don't even know, on a mission to save the mother of your commanding officer, and hero the resistance, from an infiltrator unit that you don't even know what it looks like. You're naked, alone, helpless. Gotta give it to this man, even with all the PTSD he's carring, he never lost focus on his mission. He is not just a mere character, he represents humanity, as beings that never give up, no matter how hard or difficult the situation, or life, can be.

I've listened to the entire soundtrack and it really does tell the story and take the listener on a journey - absolute fantastic composition which compliments this movie tremendously. What a masterpiece.
This was intentional - it made a cat and mouse kind of thing where no-one could tell what they wanted Sarah for (Sarah was defenceless and completely naive).

Michael Biehn IS Kyle Reese. He really nailed the character, both physically and emotionally. He really does come from a bleak, dirty, dangerous and dark future. Jai Courtney's Reese came from a future of cleanliness, with an endless supply of gym equipment and protein shakes.
Totally. Michael Biehn's Kyle is lean and mean. Like a feral cat. The other is like an inflated cantaloup.
Michael Biehn player the role like it should’ve been. Paranoid, angry, scared, on edge trying to survive. He looked starved, covered in scars and very human. You really felt he came from a horrible war zone, and the odds were stacked against him in this mission. Compare that to the muscular plank of wood they got for Genesys.
Biehn makes you believe he’s actually a soldier from the future fighting for humanity’s future. Incredible performance

Michael Biehn is "the thinking man's" action hero actor. He's also "the feeling man's" action hero actor. Kyle Reese is his personal favorite character of all he's portrayed (or so I've read). All of Reese's strengths, especially his resourcefulness, come from his humanity. There's nothing superhuman about him. He's raw and real. Of all the '80s and '90s action icons that are (or should be) household names, Michael Biehn and Bruce Willis were the best at blending "yang" strength with "yin" sensitivity to embody whole and realistic characters.

Very believable in the way he movies that he's a soldier from the future who had to watch out for HK's and terminators. Jai Courtney on the other hand moves around like a lumbering bear.

I love how he's running on adrenaline and according to the novelization stimulants the resistance gave him before traveling through time, then catches himself and blends in as much as possible.

I didn't realize until now that at 1:09 Reese is looking out for HKs. The shadow cast by the floating paper and the sound of the helicopter are triggering long-ingrained fear and survival habits. But he also sees LA in 1984, still standing rather than a pile of rubble. Hence, he knows that he isn't in his own time anymore.

Kyle Reese's ability to blend into his surroundings, as seen at the 4:14 mark, demonstrates his exceptional stealth and adaptability. His gradual entry into the phone booth highlights his methodical approach and unwavering focus on his mission to locate Sarah Connor.
i think the mistake of the later terminator movies is that they tried to remake terminator 2, instead of remaking terminator 1. they lost the fear aspect and the gritty realistic weaker abilities of the human protagonist and stuff.
The protagonists in this film were ordinary scared humans, not the brave superheroes of later films.

The thing is that horror never took off as a blockbuster genre unlike sci-fi action. Cameron modeled the first movie after Halloween and that still doesn't sell anywhere near as much.

I love the contrast between the arrival of the terminator vs that of Reese. Arnold, the villain arrives glamorously and in a badass way, on a pimped out balcony overlooking the city. Reese, the hero arrives shivering and disheveled in a back alley next to a dumpster. I think people nowadays people remember this movie for the wrong reasons; for Arnold and the punchlines. Those were great of course, but the best part of this movie is the story, the writing, acting and directing of Sgt. Kyle Reese and Sarah. This was easily one of the best action/dramas of the 80s even absent of “I’ll be back”. On your feet, soldier!

@trajan hercules Well where I live, if you attack a cop and steal their gun, there'd be a national manhunt for you. Also, I'm sure the police were alerted to begin with due to reports of the T-800 walking around naked. The patrols probably assumed that Kyle was the naked cyborg.

Real stuntman falls from over 6 feet no cgi. This is why old movies like this are superior to the modern counterpart.
I'm all for calling out shitty cgi but even today, in most cases a stunt man would be used. Modern films are shittier to older ones for other, more important reasons.
Imagine if he would've stepped on a broken bottle or anything that would've tore his feet up.
