  • Good video. Agree with everything you said. The fun is endless with these. Just got my anti SAK, SAK. The single (main blade only) silver Alox. I've got ten or so sak's and thought just for giggles I need one with only one tool. Good as a letter opener/office item.

    • @@name5949 if you can live without some of the additional tools that the Fieldmaster has, I think you won't be disappointed. The 93 mm Alox knives have bigger and thicker tools. • Your explanation of the SAK history is not totally correct in some points. Only Vic is based in Ibach (in the German speaking part of Switzerland). Wenger was based in Delémont (in the French speaking part). They were not the only companies making the first versions of Swiss Army knives. In the beginning, there were like 30 different manufacturers, some of them not even Swiss but German. Actually, back in 1890, the first knives for the Swiss Army were produced in Solingen, Germany. Victorinox (back then: Elsener) and the predecessor of Wenger (Paul Boechat & Cie) only joined the production later (1891 and 1893). The model 1908 was still made by various companies for a while, then a bit later (I'm not sure when) the contract was split between Victorinox and Wenger only. (But as an excpetion, in 1956/57, there was a 3rd manufacturer called Röthlisberger - Bärau.)

  • The Pioneer is definitely good but the Pioneer X and Farmer are even better, unless weight or thickness are an issue. For me, the ideal Alox knife right now is the Pioneer X with the bottle opener swapped out for the electrician blade. I really like having a short blade and I find the can opener a more useful tool and screwdriver than the bottle opener anyway. Granted this mod loses a bit of prybar capability but I can easily solve that by having a Leatherman Rebar nearby, which also gives me pliers, a saw, a file, and a nice 3D phillips!

It is basically my EDC (I have it at myself at home, when going for walks, at job even though I work in office), I only swich to Vic Forester when canoeing, hiking etc. in which case the Pioneer is my backup. The Emperor protects! :D PS: What I would like if it had a combo opener and a sheepsfoot blade instead of the two openers. :)

  • Wenger was one of two companies that have manufactured Swiss Army knives. Based in Delémont, Switzerland. Wenger was acquired by rival Victorinox in 2005. Since 2013, Wenger Swiss Army knives are integrated in the Victorinox collection (as the "Delémont collection"); the brand Wenger remains for watches and licensed products.

  • I have a couple of these, Alox, and a few 91mm and a few more 111mm. To the untrained eye the all look identical but to anyone paying attention every SAK is like a fingerprint. I've the Pioneer X because scissors are more useful than anything else, I use them everyday. I rarely use the main blade, don't think I have. I have a Ranger, it also has scissors but it has a saw and a metal saw/file as well. Not used nearly as often as the scissors but still very handy to half. Not having enough scissors I ordered the Alox Farmer, Farmer X of course. The X is for Scissors! Who knew! I have received my new Farmer X yet but I am sure the scissors will be like razors. You know that SAK really stands for Scissors And Knife. Not many people know that. Probably because I just made it up. I subscribed

    • What are you using the scissors for? I ask becose i cant think of that many uses in daily life.

      @Mjolbaggar@Mjolbaggar Жыл бұрын
    • The Scissors are more of a convenience thing I would say. They’re extremely good scissors. So if you have torn pockets, a thread you need to cut off some sneakers. A plastic clamshell package. Little things like that that you technically could use a Knife for, however decisions might be more controlled and precise

    • @@Mjolbaggar Well, I am a gardener, I grow all sorts of things. I am always taking cuttings from other plants, I grow into new plants and there is something about the scissor blades on an SAK that seem to not only increase my success rate but they don't seem to stress the new cuttings the same way other methods I've used to remove cuttings from plants. The difference is visible to the eye. Besides that there's other things I use them for like cutting/ trimming cigarette papers. They aren't bad for fingernails either.

I have bought them as presents for people I know, my Son's and I've even bought my wife the climber and a Limited edition ( Flags of the world) that has one small blade, a nail file and scissors. She uses the scissors on both regularly. If you vape or smoke they are handy to have. And as I've already mentioned they are so handy to have in most gardens. Sometimes you could use an open blade but the scissors are definitely safer. LOL I could sell these for a living but I don't, honestly I am just a fan.

  • There are more complete SAKs, cheaper than the Pioneer (and the Farmer, released almost at the same time), more practical, etc, etc, etc. But the Pioneer remains and will remain the model of the Swiss soldier's knife, in service from 1961 until 2008. You don't buy a Pioneer like you buy a Huntsman or another Alox model : above all, you buy a legend, a legacy, part of Swiss military history. Is it worth it in 2020, 2021 and, today, in 2022? Of course, yes ! And the answer will be the same in 2023, 2033, towards infinity and beyond 😎 The top for a SAK collector is, in my opinion, to have his officer's knife marked with his own date of birth. Congratulations on your "Model 1961" from 1992! It's awesome. Long live the original Pioneer (I leave the Pioneer X and Farmer X to the housewives 🤣 Want a pair of scissors, waxing yourself while cleaning the piece of steak stuck between your teeth ? Look like MacGyver ? Victorinox offers dozens of them with scales in Cellidor. The Pioneer has another DNA.)

  • I can't believe I never heard the (old) Soldier referred to as M61 but that is of course the correct designation, just as the SIG Swiss Army military canteen with cup I own are called M84. But I have to be pedantic and correct you on one point, Wenger is not based in Ybach where Victorinox are, Wenger is in Delemont, hence Victorinox call their Wenger-style models the Delemont collection, as they took over the Wenger knife factory there and rather than closing it they kept making knives there with the same machinery/tooling and the same employees, just under the brand Victorinox. I say Wenger ''is'' in Delemont because it was only the knife division which Vic took over and Wenger still make watches and other items in Delemont.

  • Good and informative video. I hate that your Soldier was confiscated and lost by your school principal. He had no right to do so, especially with it being your property and of sentimental value. So much for being up front and honest. I'm glad you were able acquire a replacement. I'm a knife enthusiast and have been collecting the Pioneer and its other variants (X and Solo) for about the last 3 years. I chose it over the more popular Cadet because of the size. While I miss the tooth pick and tweezers on the conventional series, I keep a Classic SD on my key ring so I'm covered. I have several Tinker's and Tinker Deluxe's, and a Farmer. I have to admit the Batman Alox in my favorite slim minimalist EDC companion of late.
