Nottingham attacks: Victims families angry over missed chances to stop killer

Valdo Calocane is, said the judge, unlikely ever to be released. But the decision to sentence the triple killer to be detained in a high security hospital angered the families of Calocane's victims, who say they've been denied justice.

The court heard that the 32 year-old committed "a series of atrocities" in Nottingham last year, but the Crown Prosecution Service says his paranoid schizophrenia meant there was no chance of a murder conviction

  • Are you kidding me? This was a murderous rampage, and he was previously well known to the authorities and mental health services. This is disgraceful.

    • Police and mental health services examined him and found him to be not fully responsible for the crime he committed. You may not like it but this is how the justice system works. A sentence must be passed with all due considerations. They cannot be passed based on what the families or what the public wants (which is the toughest possible sentence). This is just and fair and it's not like he'll be having fun while spending time in a hospital. He clearly has mental health issues which will probably plague him for a long time to come and as someone who has dealt with some mental health issues, they can be debilitating and awful so he certainly wont be at peace.

    • valdo calocane? more like calcocaine!! the murderer was almost certainly out of his fucking black face when he stabbed the 3 non black people to death!! there is talk of banning knives! however, i think all drugs should be made illegal!! knife killings usually involve drugs - whether being used or being sold!! anybody found with a knife & drugs should be locked up for a very long time!!! the scumbag's mental health problem can almost certainly be down to his consumption of drugs! i bet lucy letby wishes she had been tried at the same court! but there was one snag - she ain't black!!!

  • It's incredible the level of contempt that the elites of this country show their citizens in allowing soft sentences like this. This guy is a migrant to the uk who killed 3 innocent people and hurt several others. He should be getting worse than a jail sentence. It's a disgrace that now he will spend the rest of his life getting fed on British taxpayer money.

  • As someone who suffers with mental health I can confirm that the mental health services in this country (especially in my county) are beyond dire. The services are very poor, the treatment is poor, the staff are often very unprofessional, barely speak a word of English and when you do challenge them because they don't speak clearly they raise their voice and are just useless all in all. I recently had a therapist disclose my personal information when he wasn't allowed to do so which just shows the extent of how poor they really are in this country. Yeses they have failed these families and the people that are supposed to prevent these sort of things from happening have handled this disgracefully, the police, health services and even the judge should hold their heads in shame because I know people who suffer with the same disorder he does and they know full well right from wrong. Mental health isn't an excuse for what he did.

  • This was murder not manslaughter. The country has Broadmoor for a reason for the criminally mentally ill. I'm sadly very aware of mental illness. My father was sectioned because he had a series of mini strokes and lost all track of time and thought he still had guns, from when he was a target rifle competitor even though he did not they had been banned, but that was enough for the powers that be to force him to be sectioned and incarcerated in a secure facility. Yet this man gets to perpetrate offence after offence and literally from the videos walk away from murders. I know someone with schizophrenia and since treatment they're doing great...I hate that a person like this pos is using his mental health issues to walk away from a killing spree...he had the capability to plan and implement the plan so imo he's guilty as sin. My heart breaks for the families and I'm livid there's no planned revue and no real justice. This was not manslaughter just because he claimed insanity...is this our future...people can just attack and kill others and claim their mentally ill it's appauling.

Now, I find unacceptable what the elite in the country are doing, how they are just after the power and WE, yes we the people who really love that nation the decent citizens are treated. In other words he cannot have had the necessary intent for murder or intent to do grievous bodily harm which will also suffice to prove the intent necessary when someone has been killed. The families doubtless have a legitimate grievance against others in the system but not against either the CPS or the judge.
