I seem to remember there was a website dedicated to big Ron’s unique vernacular. “Ronglish”

Johnsen was really underrated. Played a ton of games in midfield and never let the team down

Inzaghi, Sheringham, Scholes, Giggs Zidane. Only football royalty on the scoresheet that night..

When the Champions League was the CHAMPIONS League...not the top 4 League

Great commentary from Brian Moore and Ron Atkinson 👍🏼 I remember this game well, was pretty relieved at the final whistle when United won it!

Giggs's goal vs Juve would be replicated in the following season against Arsenal in the FA Cup semifinal replay where he beat the Gunners famous back 4 en route to that goal. It was a carbon copy from the same spot and the manner in which he blasted the ball into the roof of the net giving the keeper no chance. He beat Italy's No.1 Angelo Peruzzi in this game and that game vs Arsenal in 1999, he beat England's No.1 David Seaman.

Such fond memories of this match. Even though United reached the semi-final the season before, they really struggled in those early Champions League years and were defeated regularly in the 3-4 seasons before this. There were losses to Barcelona, Dortmund, Juventus, Gothenburg, and Fenerbahce. And of course the away goals knock out to Galatasaray. Juventus were probably the best team in the world at that point and aside from them scoring in the first and last minute of this game, United really took this game to them, and proved that they could finally beat a European heavyweight. Amazing atmosphere as well. I feel this is a bit of a forgotten game, but for me it was one of the great Old Trafford nights in Europe. This was mentally such an important game for United, as at this point we hadn’t beat a European giant in the Champions League era. Very disappointingly we lost in the quarter final that season to Monaco. However, we all know what happened the season after.

The Sheringham equaliser and the result were huge in lifting United’s mentality in Europe. Juventus were the top team and most feared for a good few years. They beat us home and away the previous season, both 1-0, so scoring against them showed they can be got at.

Worst offside decision I’ve seen against sherringham. He was still onside when the flag was fully raised
