What were lions doing at the Tower of London?
In recent years, excavation of the moat surrounding the Tower of London revealed two skulls. The remains of torture victims perhaps? Out of favor noblemen who lost their heads?
No. These are the skulls of two Barbary lions once indigenous to West Africa but now extinct. Carbon dating places them in about the 14th Century AD.
How did these lions end up at the Tower of London?
The secret will be revealed in Museum Secrets: Inside The Natural History Museum.
Living Symbol of Power
Until they were hunted to extinction, Barbary lions were highly prized for their unique features: a physique and temperament that set them apart from other more familiar African lions. Ancient Romans employed Barbary lions to fight gladiators in the Colosseum. Centuries later, kings and queens of England bred them as a living symbol of power. They were royal pets, kept in cages at the Tower of London, along with many other exotic animals.

    • These lions would look dirty" and mange ridden on their own. Lions here are groomed and fed a special diet by staff. Many people are fooled here they assume lions clean themselves like tigers and jags, leopards do. Lions aren't clean.

  • Looking @ these lions it's instantly recognizable they are a different subspecies than what's running around in sub-Sahara Africa currently. Their faces are totally different & their eyes are larger, as well. They are absolutely gorgeous lions. It's a shame they're no longer in the wild!

  • DAMN these Barber lions are regal and royalty gorgeous. They also look different than other lions. To think that those lions were used and killed for entertainment makes me angry, really angry. The Roman idea of sports was NO game. Killing all those beautiful animals in masse is criminal.What the hell were they thinking ? Such barbarians. The Barbary lions need to be saved, brought back by the thousands. These lions deserve better. Humans can be so evil, to harm any animals is criminal behavior. These lions MUST be raised in captivity , A special program to breed them back from extinction, they deserve that. Laws should be in place to protect all wildlife.
