  • WOW, That's amazing. In Southern California a million bucks will get you a 2 bedroom, 1 bath cracker box on a postage stamp of land conveniently located between two busy major highways and at the end of the runway of a busy national airport.

    • Exactly! I own a 1425 Sq ft 3bed home on 6500 ft lot just outside L.A. in So. Cal. valued at just over $1M. A straight tradeoff would be more costly, more work, but in beautiful France 😍 only able to visit alas due to visa needs

  • I have several friends here in France who own this kind of properties. No insulation in walls, very height ceilings (the temperature is really comfy at 3,50m hight 😅 but not so much at 1,50m where you live), if you are fortunate you have double glased windows, the roof is not insulated at all and often to renovate, wich costs another fortune in France. Most of my Friends don't live in these big houses in winter, but in cosy and confortable appartements in town. So the big mansions are not heated in winter. Don't forget that fuel prices are waaaaay higher in France than in the US. And most of these properties have ancient heating systems, not very efficient in combustion. Habitation taxes are brutal, and they are to pay every year... And last but not least, you have to love a VERY VERY rural life, because there is absolute NOTHING around. Next town is Laval, and it is not a big one. In this particular château the road is an issue, very nearby. And the farm next to the château (at 50 m distance) is a cow-farmer, so there are noises and smells, depending from where blows the wind. And big machinery passing by very early in the morning. No problem if you like rural life. And I don't even mention the parc around, if you like to spend days and days and days gardening it will not be an issue. But if you need a gardener, be prepared to spend another fortune to pay his/their services. It's nice to show these beautiful places, but think twice before buying this kind of property. There is a reason why they are so long on the market... Oh, and I forgot: be aware if the building is under historical classification, if so, even the slightest modification is a nightmare. I know what I'm talking about...

    • Nightmare in the making. You need help to maintain and if they get sick of is sick of you you pay and pay and if he never comes back to work you pay for life. If somebody with bad intensions just moves try to get them out. Heating is a problem $$$ you never get it warm even if you spend a fortune, no isolation omg nightmare, 2 type of taxes year in year out, indeed lovely and the neighbors have smelling pigs and nothing you are going to do about it. Terrible location thats why its for sale for ever. If this in the South of France or South of Spain, Portugal.

  • Quite lovely chateau! Sometimes if you get trees and bushes along the perimeter of the grounds, it can soften or deaden the traffic sounds. It would be nice if the estate realtor can let you inside and it's another way of advertising the chateau in its raw form. I hope it is like the photographs shown and probably dusty from inactive residents in the home.

  • It does appear that the land is being kept up. The overhead shots are great and do show that the front lawn / garden is well maintained. I was surprised that the outbuilding were outside the gate as they don't look like they are from the drone shots. I did wonder if the inside was staged, and pictures taken quite a while ago and the interior and furnishings look great and being abandoned for a long time is not good. However, the shutters are closed so no sun light can damage the fabrics on the furniture and drapes. When I was watching Chateau DIY there were couples that had that kind of money looking for chateaus. I'm a little surprised no one has bought it. But possibly that was pre Covid as I haven't watched that for quite a while. Thanks Ryan that was fun. Absolutely beautiful interior and not bad exterior as well.

    • @@dennispatrick4999 The different friends of mine who own this kind of properties, even if they have serious income, have one thing in common : EVERY CENT they have goes into the maintain of the château. And it never ends: You just finished (after 15 years of never ending repair and renovating), you can start again on things you began with many years ago... Some of my friends are very attached to the building, because the family line is related since hundreds of years to the place, but more than one wish he never got the heritage of the château. So many people are blinded by the beautiful outside, or like in the video, by the splendid interior shown on pictures. But then you discover that the whole electric system is from the seventies (or earlier), that the walls take humidity from the soil, that the cold is coming up from the ground....

    • Even if you could the french administration would certainly not let you see it all re-done and spruced up at your taste because it's old and most likely protected. Therefore any change has to go through the ministry of culture to be approved by their architects and they will ask you to redo it he way French used to work 200 yeas ago. Meaning no (much) modern comfort, no pool, no modern materials. Every concession the architects will give you has its cost in time, stress and money. That and the taxes are the reasons why those properties are much less expensive that one expects.

Comparing it to my million dollar home in California, and trust me it's an average 3/2 1800 sq ft on 4 acres, nothing special at all, there is simply no comparison, this is an incredibly beautiful Chateau. • Not that it's necessarily relevant to this property but a wealthy family in my area built several homes in the chateau style...they were originally French. One that comes to mind was built in the 1920s. The grounds were expansive and beautiful with gardens, large stables and other out buildings, etc. The chateau itself was as one would expect: Very large, palatial but somewhat cold. Though at first glance, it could have been livable but a large staff would be needed. The heating system was state of the art...in 1920, no AC, antique wiring and plumbing to beautiful marble baths, etc. After a LONG time on the market, the owner wound up offering to give it to a local church. The church agreed to accept the donation but only if the grantor set up a fund to assist in its uptake!! The grantor eagerly agreed.

But what you forgot to tell is why it's so cheap compared to modern mansions...at first a terrible energetic performance with thousands of euros for gaz-electricity-water each month, high costs of maintenance and repairs, and you're often far from cities with jobs. But you could get a wonderfull chateau with 15 bedrooms next to Nantes too, because french people are to poor nowadays to afford this kind of homes!

  • It's beautiful. Plenty of land to farm. Those buildings by the entrance could be converted into more living accommodation which could be let, holiday lets or sell on.

  • Ok you should get your real estate license so when Michael buys you can get the commission 🤣 but seriously you should. That said, I was in love with that property just needs a couple tweeks very tastefully done! Why would anyone buy one that needs rehabbed when you can pay that and get a finished product. Great work on finding that one. Noise or not, great find for sure!

  • I live in a semi next to a railway line and under a flight path to the nearest airport. A million dollars seems a bargain as my house is worth half that.( Prices are crazy in the UK.) The road noise wouldn't bother me. I'd put in triple glazed windows

  • Beautiful. Wish I could send you the $$$ to buy it. I love seeing what’s available in France. I live in laguna beach California and you could maybe get a 1 bed 1 bath that’s almost falling down. Amazing that you could get a home like that in gorgeous France. It’s a really good price I think.

  • I get the appeal of buying a ruin and fixing it up but if yesterday's chateau, in the state it's in will cost millions (as Billy said) to fix why would anyone do that when they can have this place that looks super nice (as per the photos) for only 1 million? That makes no sense to me, it wouldn't be worth the money or hassle to fix up the ruin and you could move straight into this place.

    • You can't make any money in resell if you buy it in prime condition. And who can afford to live in such a big place? The ongoing upkeep would take millions each year.

  • A Belgian friend of mine once told me that the surest way to lose a fortune is to buy a French chateau. They can be magnificent, but maintenance costs a fortune and essential expenses are enormous. Which is why there are so many on the market. It’s very sad, and if you have a dream and are truly rich, go ahead. I’m not being sarcastic by the way.

  • $1,000,000 NZD gets you a standard family house with minimal outside space in Auckland New Zealand. If you are talking US dollars thats probably about 2 million NZD, which still seems like a good deal. In summer when the trees are leafy, the road noise probably goes down.
