  • *Correction on the Post-Release setting. This is from Nikon: "Choose the maximum length of time the camera will continue to take pictures after the shutter-release button is pressed all the way down: [1 s], [2 s], [3 s], or [Max.]. Shooting can continue for up to about 4 s when [Max.] is selected." I thought MAX meant unlimited until you stop taking pictures but apparently it means 4 seconds.

    • Thank you! Colombia sounds amazing for wildlife and landscape images! I wanted to know what types of hummingbirds were in Columbia and this was what I found out: "Colombia is the most bird-diverse country on earth, and it's also the most hummingbird-diverse. Of the roughly 360 hummingbird species found on earth, almost 170 are found in Colombia. Therefore, nearly half of the hummingbirds in the Americas can be seen and filmed in Colombia." That is crazy! I need to go there. Have you photographed all 170? Thanks again for the kind words and watching! Cheers

I remember the first time we visited the island, from the UK, getting up in our cottage in Comox, sat at the table having breakfast when we heard this clicking and buzzing! Loved Hummers ever since. Next time we came we were whale watching out of Campbell River, stopped eat lunch in Cadero bay and there were hundreds flying around us like flies!

  • Pre-release capture is pretty sweet for some of those action shots. What is the file size of the 120fps? Printable or just for social media?

    @coffeeatitsbest1500@coffeeatitsbest1500 Жыл бұрын
    • The JPEG size for the 120fps is 11MB. That may seem small but it's not too bad. Great for social media, website...etc. I wouldn't blow it up and print a 6 foot piece out of it but I'd print an 8.5 x 11 or even a 12 x 18. Haven't tried it yet though....

  • Beautiful! Amazing images and video. It was nice to hear (and see) the technical details about the hummingbirds. It is quite interesting that they use spiderwebs to reinforce their nests. I am guessing they are somehow aware of the amazing strength of spiderwebs (relative to diameter) and perhaps the stickiness helps make the nests more resilient.

    @celeritasc9207@celeritasc9207 Жыл бұрын
    • So glad you enjoyed the video and images, thank you! I think you are on the right track when it comes to the spiderwebs. From an article I recently read it said this about spider silk "The spider silk works not only to bind the nest to the branch, twig or other foundation, but it also helps the nest expand without breaking as the chicks grow."😄 Pretty awesome eh! I've also read that they will also use human hair for structure. I would donate mine if I know how to communicate to the hummingbirds 😆

  • Top quality video, subbed! Matt are you using the 500pf here? I think so but not sure!?

    @matthewbell1968@matthewbell1968 Жыл бұрын
    • Thank you for the great compliment and subscribing 🙌🙌😄. Welcome to the channel. The 500mm is not a f5.6 pf lens but a 500mm f4. It is a heck of a lot heavier than the pf but that extra light is nice 👌. I’ve used the 500 pf and it saves the shoulders and I currently have a 200-500 f5.6 too but if I can muscle the bigger lens…then I will do it 😄. Do you own a 500mm pf?

      @MattShannonPhoto@MattShannonPhoto Жыл бұрын
    • I did, when I had a D500 but have since gone over to the R7 with the 100-500 which (more or less) does the job. It's newer, better AF etc but is it massively better, I have my doubts. I'm after a d850 to run alongside it and will get a PF to go with it. Here in the UK the d850 still goes for good money and we all know why! Keep up the great work I've got a few of your videos to watch 😉🇬🇧

  • I noticed that you said you do this full time. Is there any tips you have for someone that wants to do wildlife photography full time?!

    @Jardinacaptures@Jardinacaptures10 ай бұрын
    • I'm not a full time wildlife photograph, but I am a full time photographer. I think the best analogy to describe professional photographers is an iceberg. Above the water you have the 10% of what everyone sees and is easy to share and connect you work with the rest of the world and the 90% underneath the surface pays the bills and runs the whole operation. I photograph for a lot of big companies shooting architectural and commercial work. My landscape photography is really what I'm known for an that is what I incorporate into my architectural work. I run wildlife and landscape workshops, sell prints, run private workshops/tours. You have to be a jack of all trades and it takes years. I've been making money taking pictures for almost 14 years. the first 10 years I did it while I had a full time job. I guess in a nutshell the tip I would give is to make photography your whole world and surround your life with job opportunities with the goal in mind that wildlife is your 20 year plan. or 10 year or for some 30 year plan. Hope that makes sense!

      @MattShannonPhoto@MattShannonPhoto10 ай бұрын
  • Love the video and photos, may I ask, the sutter speed of 1/2000, how do you get such sharp shots? I've tried this on my X-T5 and while I capture the bird in focus, I get motion blur as the bird moves off to flight. I know you can pan to avoid this, but watching your video you seem not to pan? I'd love to know the trick to get the shots sharp at 1/2000 with no motion blur!! I tend to shoot hand held, and not use a tripod. I also tend to have the IBIS on.

  • Only Sony that has the pre capture is the new a9iii to my knowledge. I switched from Canon years ago to Sony. Now i almost want to switch to Nikon lmao. I'm not a "wildlife or bird" photographer but i enjoy it and the colors are nice and the Nikon lens selection is finally looking pretty good. I do love sitting on my deck with coffee and camera getting birds though. Not sure why i complain about Sony that's much though. Most of my glass is voightlander or zeiss mf. I just want a good tele that i don't have to take out a second mortgage on.

  • the pro capture does it do alot of wear on shutter since 120 fps can add up insanely fast? another great video. i shoot olympus but enjoy learning from you.

    @sarahgrassi9648@sarahgrassi964828 күн бұрын
    • The Pro Capture feature on the Nikon Z9, like similar features on other mirrorless cameras, utilizes the electronic shutter mechanism to achieve high-speed continuous shooting. (For DSLR's it is mechanical) Since the Nikon Z9 doesn't have a mechanical shutter, there's no concern about wear and tear on a physical shutter mechanism when using Pro Capture or any other high-speed shooting modes. Instead, the camera relies on its electronic shutter, which is designed to handle rapid shooting and continuous use without the risk of mechanical failure. Electronic shutters offer advantages such as silent shooting and reduced shutter shock, making them well-suited for capturing fast-paced action with minimal disruption. However, it's still essential to be mindful of factors like heat buildup and battery life, especially during prolonged shooting sessions. I hope that answer your question. Thank you for watching!!

      @MattShannonPhoto@MattShannonPhoto24 күн бұрын
  • The main issue Ive got with pre release is that it simply loses focus if the bird moves forward or backwards, outside of the focus plane. I use custom area AF then hand over to 3d tracking. Do you just use a narrower aperture to compensate, or set the AF to erratic?

    • Check out some of my other videos, I'm best known for my landscape photography and the Z9 is killer at still photograph too. I use ND filters, polarizers, tilt shift lenses and macro. I am also open to suggestions 😃. I appreciate the feedback though. Cheers

  • Olympus pro capture does raw. Not sure if anyone else does yet.

    • From my research it looks like Fujifilm shoots RAW and Canon does a “PreRec” where it takes a video to better sort the images and from there you can extract RAW images. Nikon is the only one that uses full frame but the downside is that it shoots it in JPEG. Canon and fujifilm shoot APS-C / DX. Below is the article I sourced this info. www.digitec.ch/en/page/these-cameras-can-capture-images-before-youve-even-finished-clicking-25486 I love the feature and I don’t hear too much about it in the field. Have you used this feature much? Thank you for your comment. Let me know if you find any new info 👍😃

  • Matt, why is your vlog camera so slow to maintain focus on you??

    @davidwright8086@davidwright808610 ай бұрын
    • That is a great question. I think there are two reasons why this may be the case. Eye tracking was not turned one which is the first and the second is the focus reaction time is set too low. I will test it out on my next video. Thank you for the feedback. Cheers

    • But of course, you'll make the necessary changes and your vlog camera will be firing on all cylinders!!!
