As the national lockdown continues, I take a look at at the techniques, tips and tricks that underpin birds in flight photography. The video highlights the importance of the six S's: Settings, Skill, Set-up, Study, Style and Story and you'll see more flight shots from my Sony A7R4 and Canon 5DSR.

the BEST on youtube. Many show LARGE birds as way of showing what they can do. BUT you are the only one showing small birds. THAT'S THE REAL birds in flight shots
Appreciated!
Your photography is fantastic!! Your shots are equal or better than some photographers that live or visit in the tropics. Tropical birds seem to have so much more intense colors that really get amplified when photographed. All I'm saying is that you really do justice to the birds you select to shoot.
Thanks Paul! I’m interested in the more local Western Palearctic species, but maybe I’ll go tropical one day. Thanks for watching!
I have referred several friends to this video so I don't have to say anything... 😎 Plus, I'm doing them a favor. All of these great points are key - well done. My fave three: (1) Be patient; it takes time to hone your skills to get where you want to go - months and even years. (2) Instead of getting frustrated when you miss, which can be understandable, smile when it doesn't work out - remember how lucky you are, where you are, and that you're going to get another chance; (3) Success rates are low; live with it, keep on keeping on! Keep up the great work, Phil; love your inspirational images...
Thanks very much Mike…you should be my agent 😃

My pleasure Ann and good luck with the BIF shots
Another great video Phil, very informative. BIF photography is something I want to try more and as you say practice makes better images! I have been practicing on the local Mallards to try to improve my technique, so thank you for the tips. I love your shot of the Egret having a poo, yesterday I narrowly missed being shat on by a Cormorant that I didn't realize was in the tree almost right above me! I was concentrating so much on photographing the birds on the pond I didn't see it, a lucky escape!
You dodged the bullet so to speak. I’m glad you are enjoying the videos...lockdown is rather constraining...would prefer to make videos out in the field. Thank you for your positive feedback!
Thank You for sharing Your experience! Great Shots!
My pleasure!
Thanks Phil, Very helpful indeed. An eye opener to learn so much about flight photography. Practice, practice, practice. And the skill comes along without being conscious about it.

@@philgowerbirdphotography I definitely like this video!
thanks Phil, amazing photos😊
Cheers
I find that a certain amount of upper body training actually helps considerably with my skill ability in the field. I do curls and bench presses with dumbbells. Nothing crazy, but it helps a lot when holding my heavy lens for a long time. Keeps my panning smoother. Never knew that I was going to have to work out to be a photographer.
Mobility and strength very important with those big lenses
Thank You for the tips!
My pleasure
I agree 100%! To get the skills is the most difficult. Great pictures und well explained. Thank you!
Thank you very much!

This is the first bird photography video I've watched that had me laughing out loud in the first few seconds -- thanks!
My pleasure!
Thank you for watching
Thanks Phil! Great tutorial!
Thank you
You are welcome Phil!
Great presentation. I like the six S's concept. With the advent of Covid, I switched from aviation to birds and it is a whole different game indeed. Lots to learn and perfect. Using a Canon 5DsR and the newer Canon R5 is helpful but that skill set is the set up for success. Thanks again and all the best.
Thank you! A good luck with the new genre of photography!
great photos. Really appreciate you sharing
Absolutely my pleasure Aldrin!
Thanks for those practical and easy to follow tips.
My pleasure! Thank you for watching!
Your photos of birds in flight are great and the Sony body is why 👍
This video was produced before I had the Sony A1 and most of the flight shots shown in it were taken with the Canon 5DSR, but the A1 is amazing for BIF shots.
Thank you, very educational. ❤
These are great, thanks so much, from western Canada!
Thank you!
Enjoyed this video! Great work too!
Thank you Jon
Well done. You have reinforced what I have learned so far as well as enriched my understanding by providing useful additional detail and by introducing some new factors which will certainly help even more. I'm an amateur enthusiast and your skill point on how difficult it can be to raise the lens and quickly see the bird through it was one of my biggest challenges. I found that aviation photography where the planes arrive/depart frequently has vastly improved my skill in this regard.
Thank you for the positive feedback skip. Keep on practicing!
A fabulous video Phil, I echo your thoughts on your advice and settings as it’s almost a carbon copy of what I have been using for years, stunning images to support your clip too, I love BIF photography myself and have almost made it exclusive to how I photograph birds, they are born to fly.
Thanks for your positive feedback....love your videos...you are an accomplished bird photographer!
@@philgowerbirdphotography Thank you Phil for your very kind words, I am not on your level with video by a long way but I had a bit of fun doing it lol If you are ever bored one day this is more what I do.... www.mykelphotography.com.au/ And Insta instagram.com/mykelphotography7/?hl=en Keep up those great BIF images and thanks for sharing your amazing work. Kind regards Michael
Excellent!!
Great video and great bif photos. Thanks for sharing knowledge and tips. I'm getting more and more into birding and bird photography. Purchased the Sony 200-600mm last year and found out the hard way how much study and skills it takes to get the good shots. But I'm slowly getting luckier day by day..
Thank you for your feedback! Good luck with the BIF shots....I love the 200-600!
Very informative, thanks!!

Hi Phil. Here in Ontario Canada I have been an avid bird photographer. You have created a video with so many useful tips to get me able to photograph BIF. I took many notes and I will be referring to them often in future, as I head out to a photography session.
Brilliant to hear Jean and good luck with your BIF portfolio. Not wishing to over-promise I might try to produce a little pamphlet on my tips and tricks! Happy snapping!
Excellent shots. Very informative . Thank you.

My pleasure! Thank you for taking the time to have a look!
Great video! Keep them coming 😀
Thank you for the feedback!
Thanks Phil for some good solid advice and for emphasising that good BIF is a SKILL not a set of gear....fabulous pics at the end, really liked too the fact that you encouraged people to get shots with some 'behaviour' other than simply flying past, of course you're right and that does make for a much more interesting image.
It’s my pleasure Lindsey and thank you for watching and commenting!
You can't shoot birds in flight without the right gear.
Great share, so useful in the field!
Thank you!
This is an extraordinary and wonderful video. Beautiful photographs and excellent advice on how to achieve similar results. Thank you.

Enjoyed that, and will have an eye out for more of your lessons..

Useful and well presented tips Phil. Great images too. As an extra tip to bring out in the skills section, I’ve had beginners ask how do you ‘find’ the bird in the viewfinder when using a long lens, and the tip would be to keep your eye on the bird as you bring the camera up to your eye making it easier to get on the bird quickly. It’ll be second nature to you of course but thought it might be worth mentioning.
Thank you for the positive feedback Alan. You provide an excellent tip, which would sit well with the ‘try with both eyes open initially’ I gave.
Yes, fix your eyes on your subject and do not look at your camera before bringing it up. You already know where it is! This sounds simple, but that doesn't make it easy. You may find you start with the bad habit of looking at your camera as you start to bring it up. You must break that habit!
