Daunte Wright's family speaks about tragic loss, receives comfort from George Floyd family | FULL

The mother of Daunte Wright said Tuesday that she was on the phone with her son in the moments before his death.
Wright, 20, was shot and killed by police in Brooklyn Center, Minn. on Sunday during a traffic stop. The police chief said Monday he believed the officer had been reaching for her Taser but instead pulled her gun and shot the man with a single bullet.
Katie Wright said her son had called her for advice after police pulled him over. She said they asked him to hang up the phone.
Wright said she called him back several times and eventually a woman who had been in the car with him picked up the phone.
“She was crying and screaming and said that they shot him and she turned the phone to the driver seat and my son was laying there unresponsive," she said.
Wright’s family spoke on Tuesday alongside lawyer Ben Crump and the family of George Floyd, who came to offer their support as the trial of Derek Chauvin, the officer charged in Floyd’s death, continues in Minneapolis.
On Tuesday, two days after his death, the officer who shot and killed Wright and the police chief both resigned.

What could be more frightening than that. I would rather be raped than have my child murdered by a habitual criminal who showed no signs of going anywhere except down a road where his death most likely would have been far worse than the drugs in his system that really killed him.

My biggest issue is that everything in this country is deemed racist and if you don't agree with the narrative, that makes you a racist (in your case, a sellout). Just about every high profile shooting of a black man has a common denominator, "non-compliance". Just comply and if you feel your rights were violated, you sue later (you don't argue your case while resisting arrest). • A Black police officer is putting cuffs on him for an outstanding warrant and he resists and tries to run, surrounded by cops with his girlfriend in the car. For the record, he absolutely should not have been shot and it was clearly an accident. But why did he need to repel and start this senseless resistance having one cuff on him already? People need to learn not to resist arrest of the law enforcement cause it makes their case significantly worse and anything can happen at that point. It is sad that Black and Indigenous people in large numbers get hurt while resisting arrests but but so do people of other skin colors and races and I don't see the way out of this by going out on streets, burning trash cans, looting the stores and physically altercating with police every time a Black person dies during an arrest. It's not good for the Black people in general and it only reassures their belief that they need to resist an arrest no matter what they've done. We can't disregard the legal norms and let people walk away with theft, weapons(Daunte's arrest charges), drugs use or whatever they do. We can change the police tactics but we can't change the fundamentals of policing. Imagine how would you feel in the shoes of a cop. The last thing they want is to wrestle with a young guy during his arrest, use force and then face public shame for doing their job because the person is Black. They can't just drop it and walk away from their duties and oath. They need to execute arrests and subdue the subjects of it. We can make our all law-enforcement agencies consist of only Black people and it's not gonna change the situation no matter whose on each side. People need to learn not to resist arrest and the BLM movement as of now only promotes social unrest, cultural disobedience and more cultural divide as well as allows people to break things and feel unpunished. The more violence and disorder it brings, the less successful it will be with the issues of social justice. Footnote: Daunte is half-black. BLM definitely needs rebranding

  • OMG! My heart goes out to this family and every single person who knew and loved Dante Wright! I'm so sorry for this tragic loss! If a police officer is too stupid to know the difference between their right and left side of their body, taser side and gun side, they should never have been a police officer. They need constant panic training to ensure this doesn't happen. I don't care if she was upset by this, she should be horrified! it's unconscionable that this happened. In the last year, we've seen a police officer, Amber Guyger, walk into the apartment of 26-year-old Botham Jean, and shoot him dead and now this?! It's definitely beyond time to retrain police officers! We watched as a police officer murdered George Floyd. This has to stop. Training needs to Include annual race screening to weed out racist police officers without question, and annual screening for power hungry police officers! If they fail, they're gone, no second chances. We also need to enact laws where, if 2 or more people witness a police officer committing a crime, they should be able to call 911, video the crime, and intervene, stopping the crime without fear of losing their life or prosecution! I know it sounds untenable but if that had been a law an year ago perhaps the family of George Floyd wouldn't be suffering through a murder trial.
