Elder Bednar on Nephi and Making Mistakes

During a question and answer session hosted by the Church Educational System of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Elder David A. Bednar offered an insight that is both insightful and encouraging! Referring to Nephi's multiple attempts to acquire the plates from Laban, Elder Bednar reminds us that every "mistake" is a learning opportunity and that as we try our best, we can trust that the Lord is in control.

Great question that we all struggle with because I think we want black-and-white answers, and most of life is just as Elder Bednar said, we go forward trying our very best and trust that the Lord will guide us . . . and this doesn't mean there won't be failures and setbacks -- they are part of our mortal learning curve.

I’m in a situation where I feel so lost, and I’m trying my best (I hope so) and I keep having feelings and I’m so scared if it’s just me or not. At times they directly conflict. I thought at certain moments that “Yep, this is it, this is how I fix my messed up life situation!” Only to hit a brick wall and fall apart. I’ll try to keep Elder Bednar’s Apostolic council in mind, and keep trying my best, and hope and pray that heaven will take charge, and that Father in Heaven will accept of my life that I honestly seek to consecrate to Him!

Turn to Jesus not the Mormon Church. Jesus sets us free not Joseph smith. He and He alone will set you free and gives eternal life (with Him) because of His righteousness not your own. This is why you “can’t” do it. We never could! That is why the 1st covenant was to show us our sin, it’s a mirror of how lost we really are! Turn to Jesus alone and be set free!!

You should consider professional counseling. Sometimes it is more a mental or social-emotional concern, rather than just spiritual.
Mistakes are a Normal Part Of Learning
Sometimes you don't have to do your best and you still get blessed sometimes the blessings come in the resting
I feel like Nephi was showing He was willing to do anything for the Lord and believed the Lord would help him. How many times do we give up when we haven't tried everything. His faith preceeded the miracle and they saw how wicked Laban was, willing to steal and kill to cover it up. And Laban met with the Elders of the church. This was corruption. Nephi showed righteousness. God proves us in all things.

You could say that Nephi really knew how to get ahead before heading off to his brothers with the brass plates.
Elder Scott once shared the barometer of our spiritual temperature as a church, as a whole, is depicted in Ether 4, verses 13 to 19, and that it can be applied individually as well.

Many times revelation comes when least expected, but is when you need it most, or the LORD wants to use you as a mouth peace. What is difficult then is to act quickly as prompted. It also can be that action which saves your life or someone else. “Do It Now” a moto on the desk of President Spencer W. Kimball. That moto goes well with action when prompted. It may remind you to call someone in need, or not stub your toe an the skates left on the floor, or it may direct you to turn on a street you had no intent to travel but heard later of disaster where you had planed to travel. You never know but the LORD does. Do it Now…
Of course! By the brothers offering Laban Gold and Silver in exchange for the plates, the circumstances allowed Laban to show his true colors by stealing the riches and attempting to kill Lehi's sons. These two acts were capital offenses punishable by death. Therefore, legally, Laban could be put to death for those crimes. This "allows" Nephi the legal right to slay Laban.

@@ts-900 Not sure that's ever mentioned in the Book of Mormon. In the Old Testament, yes. Perhaps there were no Nephilim in or around Jerusalem.

Remember Nephi said to trust in God, not the arm of flesh.
All this stuff had to happen: Laman getting kicked out and then they go get their gold. That's why they had to leave it so it would be there to try to trade for the plates to give Laban that chance. Then he went out and celebrated his new wealth and that's when Nephi was commanded to kill him. My question is what did Nephi need to learn in killing Laban? God could have made him fall a little harder and ended him there. Nephi needed to know what it was like to kill someone for the right reasons to build him into the leader he had to become.

The fact that the Book of Mormon starts out with Nephi breaking the 10 commandments by murdering and stealing has always fascinated me.
If it wasn't for that whole Martin Harris situation the Book of Lehi would have been the first book. Even Joseph Smith wasn't perfect, but the Lord allowed him to repent and things still worked out.
You've missed the point. The Book of Mormon was written by Jews that were clearly not mainstream. The murder of Laban and stealing the Brass Plates is intended to show that Jerusalem had already fallen into sin. Laban had already committed sins worthy of death. Lehi stealing the Brass Plates is a sign from God that the true Old Testament religion was moving out of Jerusalem and going with Lehi into the Wilderness. When Menelik stole the Ark of The Covenant in the Kebra Nagast, it says "the Sun has set on Jerusalem and rises over Ethiopia". This is the message Lehi wanted to convey. @@Ry-ss5dz
If you are going to take that narrow of an interpretation, you're going to have to condemn a lot of people who have committed what others call justifiable homicide. When it comes to war, are you a conscientious objector? I would think you'd have to be.
It makes sense to me. Joseph Smith started out as a necromancer and found the BOM using demons and witchcraft. Harry Potter did it better.

"You're not going to mess somebody up..." That's a bit funny, when using Nephi as an example. If the spirit constrains you to chop off someone's head, then you might mess them up. I think it is appropriate to recognize that nobody is perfect. The Brethren are far from perfect. We shouldn't beat ourselves up about being imperfect Every step we take is into an uncertain future. That's true for everyone. We can't trust that just because we're doing our best that everything will turn out perfectly. But, we can trust that Christlike love and honest will lead us in the right direction. The brethren, like all of us, come to complicated moral crossroads every day. They have to ask--should we involve church members in the financial decisions of the church and let them participate in how surplus tithing dollars are spent, or is it better to hide our investments from members and create bogus and illegal shell companies to fool the SEC so that members won't be tempted to stop paying tithing because we have over $150 Billion invested in the stock market. The brethren face complicated questions, such as, if facts and data come to light that demonstrate clearly that Joseph Smith's claims about translating the Book of Abraham from ancient papyri weren't accurate--should we acknowledge that openly and encourage members to discuss possible inaccuracies in our beliefs and become critical thinkers or should we obscure those problems and pretend that any criticisms of the Church are lies and tell members that they should "doubt their doubts" and only read from reliable sources (e.g. us) and "don't discuss your doubts with doubters" so that members won't be tempted to think that Joseph Smith did anything wrong or that the Brethren shouldn't do all of the thinking for the Church. For me, it's easier to be comfortable with my own growth, my own imperfections, and my own learning process when I recognize that the Brethren have to deal with their own limitations, too, and they can't really see around corners. So, I'm not totally disagreeing with Elder Bednar. Just partially. :)
If they stopped rewriting history and whitewashing Joseph Smith, that might suggest that we could BEGIN to trust them. Until then, why should anyone trust these people?
