BMW M4 CSL v Alfa Romeo Giulia GTA: DRAG RACE
It’s time for a Germany vs Italy head-to-head!
We’ve got Mat lining up in the all-new BMW M4 CSL, and he’s going up against Yianni in the Alfa Romeo Giulia GTA! Both of these cars are super rare, with only 10 of each being sold in the UK! The question is, which is quickest over the quarter-mile?
Starting with the BMW, it’s powered by a 3-litre twin-turbo straight-six which is good for 550hp and 650Nm of torque. It drives the rear wheels only, and tips the scales at 1,625kg - 100kg less than the standard M4! It’ll set you back a fair bit, though, costing £126,000!
Then we have the Alfa. It’s housing a 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 under the bonnet which can produce 540hp and 600Nm. It’s lighter than the BMW, at 1,540kg, but it’s also more expensive, coming in at £150,000! Just like the BMW, it also drives the rear wheels only.
So the Alfa is down on power, but it’s also lighter! Will that prove decisive? There’s only one way to find out - LET’S RACE!
Which would you choose? VOTE BELOW!
VOTE: BMW M4 CSL!
VOTE: Alfa Giulia GTA!
Both cars are insane! But the BMW M4 CSL is my favourite!

Poor yanni
it doesn't come as a surprise that the CSL outperforms the GTAm because 1. on the dyno the CSL shows 605 HP, where the normal M3/M4 already has 550 HP 2. the announced weight for the Giulia is the dry weight, so without any fluids. My Q with carbon seats and CCM breaks weights 1.755 kg, which is much more than the official weight of 1.620 kg. So both cars will weigh almost the same ... and then there is a weight difference between Mat and Yanni ... lol
This is the very important detail missed. The reason the M4 walked away is it had around 70BHP more than the Giulia. BMW told very large porky pies about the power output of their car whereas Alfa Romeo didn't. In fairness if someone owned a GTA they could gamble and have it tuned which is less than £1000 and it would have 605bhp as well but it would void the warranty on your 150k Alfa Romeo.
Questions what CSL will show on dyno? They usually have more in real life than in papers

Like your videos, but you’re just showing which one is the best in a straight line performance test. The global evaluation of these cars go way beyond that, like which is the best at real road or track driving

The italians are pretty correct and optimistic about their HP numbers, where the Germans underrate it so massively that you can almost call it lying. Usually you can count another 20HP on top of the official number. The 2021 Supra for example with the BMW B58 has 382HP on paper but close to 400 HP on the dyno. The Yianni tune adds an extra 20% power and doesn’t void your warranty 🚀🚀🚀
For those who are unsure what the difference between these cars is it will mostly be transmission. The power is more or less the same and the alfa is even lighter. The bmw climbs ahead bc it has taller gearing and holds onto gears longer meaning it sits in its power band longer. The alfa is faster off the line because its gearing is meant for early acceleration. Had the gearing been the same between both cars the alfa would most likely win due to the difference in weight. Or the alfa puts more gears in the trans and programs it to keep the car in its ideal power band always with the shorter gearing

@@jacopofrancescon2324 S58 engines had a major recall due to the main bearing shell in 2021, so this engine had problems. But unfortunately it is its design which would offer problems in the recing ambient. First of all it is a 6 inline engine: its crankshaft and camshaft are very long and therefore they lack the stiffness of a v6 engine. It is common experience, if we try to twist 2 bars of the same material and diametre applying the same torque the longer bar will twist more. For the S58, compared to the Alfa v6 90 deg, this translates into being less capable to be tuned to reach high RPM and become lighter. In DTM or in Formula 1, v6 90 degrees engines can be tuned to weigh less than 100kg and run at 14000 or more RPM. This is simply not feasible for a straight 6 cylinder engine. Furthermore S58 has a bore of 84mm and a stroke of 90mm. It is a so called "undersquare engine ". On the contrary, Alfa Quadrifoglio has a bore of 86.5mm and a stroke of 82mm. It is what is called "oversquare" engine, like racing cars. How does it translate? If we calculate the piston average velocity, this is given by the formula Vm=2Cn/60, where Vm is the average velocity in m/s, C is the stroke in m (so divide the value in mm by 1000) and n is RPM. Let's see what does it mean for S58 and Alfa Quadrifoglio engines at, say, 7000RPM. With the formula above at 7000RPM, the average piston speed of S58 is 21m/s while for the Alfa v6 90 deg engibe the value is 19,1m/s. As you can easily see, S58 pistons have higher average speeds (roughly 10% more than the Giulia, because their stroke is roughly 10% bigger) and at 7000RPM S58 passes the border of 20m/s, while Giulia's engine is still below 20m/s. This is the reason why Giulia Quadrfoglio is better designed and more reliable for races. Furthermore, while M4csl has a "chipped" version of the base S58 engine, the Giulia Gtam has hardware changes: pistons are new design and the cooling jets increase from 2 in the normal Quadrifoglio to 4 in the Gta and Gtam. In other words, while the M4Csl is nothing more than a "marketing showcar" unsuitable for racing, the Giulia Gtam is a proper race car, with race cars characteristics and big margins for tuning. A mechanical engineer, professional pilot or any enthusiast with a sound technical background would have no doubt in choosing the Giulia
@@aralfa Luckily I'm a structural engineer and so I can try to understand what you're talking about, unfortunately I'm not a mechanical engineer so I can't answer you with the same technical language lol 😅 However, the first comment refers to the stability of the car. Since you've commented, I take the opportunity to ask you how much influence has the engine geometry on the car's torsional stiffness. Honestly I expect it could be an effect on that, but not 100%.
