These types of episode is why I'm fan of your channel. Very open and candid. You created a huge buzz in the industry when you did your roof rack weight rating episode. So much so, other 4WD KZheadrs did their own roof rack weight rating episodes. I'm sure it's the reason Rhino Rack has now improved their website and finding weight rating for their roof racks is so much easier. I wonder how much buzz this will generate this time? Well done Tyler.👍
Thanks mate!
Couldn’t agree more with this
Fully agree with you Fatman.
we had a cop, come to the 4x4 club. to talk on 4x4 mods..i sold my 4x4. not worth having one. this country is fkt..4x4rs have car laws.3/4''tires, 2'' lift. car laws..absolutly bs..fkn nanny country. if they started up an accessory shop, dealers, like in u.s. the gov would make a sht load more money from tax. instead of 4k from you.. i own an f250 highboy, 1975. its 26'' to the sill,,std..factory..engineers are glorified fk wits..&, it should be illegal, banned, to raise any,ifs 4x4. they are not,4x4rs..new vehicles, hilux, ect, fail the moose test..swerve to you.. there aint no moose in aus..it was adopted here..if its illegal to fit 3-5'' lifts on your vehicle, without an engineer fkng your ass for 4k.. they shouldnt be sold..period.. 1 thing you missed,,was the diff ratio..it has to be changed with bigger wheels..tell the fk wit that..or low range will kill you, being faster down hill..plus , worse in an auto,,there death traps std..
This is why I love your channel. Very open and honest with useful information. I'm not ready for engineering yet but this was a great heads up on what I need sooner rather than later.
Cheers mate, glad you enjoyed it!
@@TylerThompson90 A 2 inch suspension lift + going from a 31's to 33's is a 1 inch lift = 3 inches or around a 75mm total lift. Also is the lift measured from the bottom of the frame/body(at factory recomended tyre pressures) or what the advertised size increase is ?
you know why its 4k to engineer a 4x4 dont you..so most people will not bother..this guy should watch petersons 4x4 adventures. he,ll die of heart attack..
A very interesting episode to see what you have to go through in AUS. Here in the UK we have nothing like this. Any lift, any tyre size is ok and the first thing most people do is take off the anti roll (sway) bars and throw them out! As long as the tyres are within the arches or flares and the headlights are adjusted down to not dazzle you are fine.
Bought a 105 cruiser running 35's and a 3" lift - apart from steering like a ship I also got knocked back a pre rego check - out with the old lift and tyres at a cost! More needs to be said about this! Well done on educating peeps!
Thanks for putting this video up and appreciate the content. Well done Tyler.
Hi Tyler, thanks for taking the time to do this video. I have enjoyed watching the process you've gone through and it's nice to see a positive interaction with the police given others experiences that have been posted on KZhead in the recent past.
Hi Tyler, A well presented video with interesting information. Nice job!
Great Content Mate good to see what goes on behind the scenes
fantastic content, explained in a very easy to understand way. thanks Tyler. Keep these videos coming..
Great video as always Tyler. I have learnt so much from this, thank you so much.
It’s great that you gave an honest and straight forward video on your experience with the defect and the process that you went through. Good video 👍🏼😎
What a thorough process the Engineer did. Good video.
Humble and informative, loved the video mate, and respect to you for the bloopers you left in💪
Honest and humble, good video.
What a great video with lots of great information
Well done. Well produced and definitely very interesting. Thanks for the very valuable information. 👍
Very informative. That bloke is a legend for letting us see the process
Great video mate ,very interesting
Thank you very much, I’m enlightened! Keep them coming.
Nailed it again Tyler. Great video. This is info everyone needs regardless of the state.
Great vid 👍This is the information that will help many Tyler, hopefully you didn't get stung with a big bill.
Wow what an interesting and informative video. You're the only one who actually shows the whole process and now it's much more understandable.
Thank you for your information far more easy explained information and details then other channels great content
Nice one Tyler not enough people talking about this on youtube
G'day Tyler, thanks for the ep.Very interesting! will have to check NT reg's.Thanks mate.👍😎
Nice work mate and that you are open and honest. It is important that your vehicle is safe for you to use but also other road users as well. I think that is one thing others forget.
Spot on well worth the watch 👌
Awesome video it’s things like this is what people need to know and what they will be in for and costs cheers Tyler and thanks
Cheers Tyler this helps me out alot, slowly working my way to getting my GQ engineered in NSW. You have opened my eyes up alot more and made me realise there are some extra parts I need to get😂. Cheers brother
Top vid mate. Interesting insight into the engineered modification process.👍 I totally agree - spend the money and get it done right first time. Saves hassles (big & small) in the future. Btw the mods look great👌
well done TT i’m in the same predicament ATM love the vids keep up the good honest work…
Great video , very informative
Top video mate. Explains a lot info 😎
Great info Tyler
Tyler this is a great video and is very helpful to all 4x4 owners. I'm kicking off a build similar to yours so this info will be very helpful. Cheers!
this is one of the best videos i have seen for ages im not a 4x4 , but motorcyclist , there are a lot of 4x4 s getting around and this video may just jog someone which is driving around with these mods without getting them checked and passed . good work Tyler
good work bud thanks
Been watching a few "backyard" fab and mod video series..... This video is the first of yours, and I can tell straight away the rest are light years behind you and your build. You speak succinctly, no waffling, no silly crapping on about how sick or mint things are.... You've given good, honest info, all set out in a clear format Thank you very much for all that info, so very relevant for those of us looking to buy similar soon. And the out-takes 🤣
nicely explained, thank you for sharing
Great vid, nice to see some of the behind the scenes testing that’s involved with the whole process. Will be going through this process later this year to get my duramax converted patrol legal here in SA. Hoping to get it done with the current 4” lift and going up to 35’s from the current 33’s. Quote was about $5k to get it signed off.
I love your channels on the 4wbs👍👌👏
Great vid mate
Very straightforward vid on the modification and engineering process in NSW that otherwise honestly seems to be a bit of dark art. Cheers for demystifying everything somewhat! 🍻
good to know stuff.... great episode...
Legend mate Keep up the great work
very informative documentary, awsome job Tyler, love it
Thanks so much!
That was an extremely interesting episode. Quite the process and cost. Thanks for sharing.
Cheers!
Brilliant video Tyler, thanks for sharing. I’ll never take my FJ Cruiser to this level but this was extremely interesting and informative, great work as ever! 🙌👍
Thanks mate!
A good video, well put together 👍🏻
Man! I love the outtakes 🤣🤣🤣 … keep them in always 👍🏻
Hey Tyler, that was an excellent insight into the process of having your vehicle engineered. Great to have allowed you to film some segments of the actual processes... Great it passed. 👏🚙👍
Cheers mate
Thanks for the video. Very informative. I can understand why the certification is so detailed and subsequently rather costly. The different state requirements are a prime reason why our country's Federation requires a major review.
yo im from port area aswell! running a big green 75 series with roof extension. love this talk! is a good topic alot more people need to be aware of
Great video I'm just about to go through this process with my supercharged 6ltr 105 series.
It's fascinating what you have to go through to modify a vehicle in Australia, come to Oregon USA it's a lot different - My rock crawling rig here in Oregon runs 37" tires, no sway bars, and some fun suspension adding up to a 5" lift, not to mention the lack of tire coverage, doors, or roof - and my neighbor state patrolman has said numerous times that there's nothing that would stop me driving down the public roads, here except for maybe mud flaps. It's noisy and you don't want to swerve too hard, sometimes I think it might be better we have a little stricter rules... sometimes not.
Not all parts of Australia. Lot's of unstable, or overloaded looking 4WDs driving around Queensland even in the large cities.
@@richardpowell1425 but it is all parts here is stupid on modification just some areas just don't bother enforcing it
Cheers Awesome job mate best vid I’ve seen by far on this👍wish someone would make one for going through this process in QLD
Excellent video. I'm with the other's on why I follow your channel. Excellent reviews and you just say it as it is. Keep up the great work.
Much appreciated!
That was really insightful. Thanks for the vid. The test guy seemed very reasonable and thorough. Nice work all round.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks mate very informative! Cheers
Good vid mate 👍
This has been a great video mate. Clears up alot of debate and tbh all those tests are things any vehicle should be able to do. Nothing over the top and end of the date you have a good handling, highly modified rig to be proud of. I did hear years ago you can’t change any of the specs on the mod plate, for example can’t run 33s if it says 35s as was all tested in a set circumstances. Be interested to know
Great video, i went to Sydney for the GVM upgrade on my Y62, the bloke i used is a GU specialist although he’s fast becoming a Y62 expert as well, the Tamworth mob asked for a bunch of unnecessary stuff and a ridiculous price
Super fantastic thank you
Tyler these Type of Episodes make your Channel so different to the rest. Fantastic great work, Keep them coming.
Glad you like them!
Great vid I’m in the process of taking out my cheap hilux 4inch ifs lift, going 2inch suspension 1 inch body lift as I’ve had issues with caster/camber an knocking out the alignment all together .Im sure there’s lift kits that can fix this.but it’s money better spent getting out on weekends than going through the engineering process.
Thanks Tyler - Very informative - confirmed a lot of uncertainty for me👌😊🇦🇺
Great video mate, very informative.
Glad you enjoyed it
Great job👍 what about the beadlocks and mud flaps.
Thanks Tyler, and some still think cheap is best. This is one of the reasons "Brand Name" gear isn't at eBay prices. Love your honesty. Great report.
Thank god we don't have tough regulations like you guys here in the UK 🏴👍
why? So you can do whatever you like to your vehicle even if it makes it unsafe and a risk to others?
I've heard when you go from 32" tyres to 33" the headlights turn into machine guns and the cruise control becomes a pedestrian target locking device
Meh - don’t need tough regs when you guys roll on 31’s😁
That is a first...Never seen a KZhead channel investing a dedicated video clearing such kind of stuff for audience...Good on you mate.
Boom Boom finally you are ligit. Keep wheeling. Love your videos
Awesome video with so much content in ensuring your car is roadworthy. Other off-roaders need to follow your lead and have their vehicles engineered and compliant after mods. Seen so many young guys with totally illegal rigs on the road that could potentially lead to harm or worse. Love the GVM being just so damn close - we are right on our GVM 3350 with 130lt fuel and 2 people so now the dilemma is Lovells 4.2 or DMW 4995 and a wad of cash 💰 🤓 Thanks for another great educational video TT
Basically any basic modification you do to your 4x4 needs to be engineered (bull bar, rear bar, roof racks) so pretty much any 4x4 on the road these days are unroadworthy. Many people don’t realise this.
I have genuine tb48 brake pads on my 3L GU stops pretty good
It’s pretty crap that we have different laws in different states. Why is 2” lift and 33’s unsafe when you cross the border. We are such a nanny country
Great information here. Superb insight into the engineering process. I'm from NSW too and based on what was covered here, my 1996 Landcruiser 80 Series petrol is well within the allowable modifications before engineering is required (ie. 50mm lift, standard size tyres (32"), and OEM exhaust). Thanks for sharing.👍👍
BTW Tyler, did you cover seats with the engineer? Is changing the OEM seats require an engineer's certificate?
Bloopers are crack up😂 keep up the good work mate🤙🏾
I think every four-wheel-drive I should see this video. Before they even think about changing anything on The vehicle. Well done Tyson Thompson about time someone done a very well informed video about the subject.
Another Great Video.... They must be cracking down, more scaring than fining people. I got pulled over coming through Richmond (Lithgow to Sydney) I was told that my 4wd was illegal, but when I questioned him, the police officer couldn't give me a straight answer. I have a 2 inch lift with 285/75r16 (32.8 inch) tyres on it. he then walked around my 4wd, in the end he let me go but pretty much told me not to go through Windsor/Richmomnd area as I might be so lucky next time.
if this is the only mods, you are 100% legal, no cert is required
Great vid
Great Video mate. Love how you discuss everything. By doing that I found out I can't put 33' tryes on my car. Its a PX Ranger with a 2inch Lift. I was thinking of putting 33' on. You said only go 32' to make it Legal. Cheers Mate
informative thanks
Good info. However I'll stick with 2" and 33's, twin lockers on my GU.
Thanks Tyler, good to see this info as I plan to drive through NSW soon. As I understand it, in Vic its 50mm overall with a tolerance of +/- 25mm. That means the 4x4 can measure up to 75mm from manufacture ride height without enforcing an engineer certificate. (I'm 50mm suspension and 32.7 tyres) Informing your insurance company is the big one down here, they can (and will) knock back your claim if you haven't informed them of your mods. My mods cost an extra $170 on my insurance, but at least I know I'm insured!
in iceland you can go 54 inch. but fenders must cover tires and car must get inspected. probably even larger than 54 if you find sutable road legal tires that make sense for snow driving.
Great video, very informative. It’s frustrating how costly it all is when you do suspension then engineering just to be able to 4wd and camp more in those harder to get to spots and a better vehicle for off road capabilities. I better have a look at mine then I bought it gu Ute on 33s with 4 inch lift just passed new rego check has bigger breaks etc fitted to it may not be legal without a certificate
going to be looking into 4" with 35's myself and upgrading GVM for the 3.5tonne upgrade on my 04 GU Ute as well. In QLD pretty sure 33's on 2" just scrapes the legality.
good job...very nice car
i saw you in bomaderry! i was in my 4.8 actually you were at garbutts i was gonna stop in but i was working
Wow. I watched this video because I had no idea what “defected” even meant. As an American viewer, seeing what you have to go through to modify a vehicle in Australia seems outrageous. I guess you’re used to it there, but we don’t have anything like that here (except maybe in Commi-fornia) and if they tried to enact it, people in the off-road community would go absolutely off the rails in rebellion. I feel sorry for you guys over there that want to live the off-road life. It looks hard and very expensive. I certainly makes me appreciate the freedom we have in the U.S. Love your channel though. I appreciate your honesty, openness and in depth info, behind the scenes stuff and it’s interesting to see what it’s like there compared to here. Cheers mate!
Yeah a lot of people over here are fairly frustrated with how it all works! Thanks for watching mate
The mod regs are why people are starting to move towards 4500kg gvm and over, as once you hit light truck registration doesn’t have any of those restrictions. You can run 40’s with 6 inch + lifts no problem. Only restriction is the headlight height. And only braking tests required no swerve test
And zero blood alcohol so no lunch time drink!
@@andrewcakulslynnetteoregan3934 this is incorrect, each state is slightly different but in nsw it’s 0.05 unless your over 13.9t gvm, in a bus or carting placarded dangerous goods. Qld, vic, sa and wa is the same
Frank are you sure? That's awesome
Still need engineering for 37s or 40s on the light trucks like Isuzu and Canters
@@nathan100tz correct unless it’s done under SSM, but the engineering isn’t as in depth compared to light vehicles, no swerve testing etc, just braking. And the two companies that sell the rims for the super single upgrades do all the engineering or SSM as part of the package
Well done mate , you have a lot of patience- it is great that you used quality Aussie components. Great lesson too all, I had too do the same with my Patrol in nsw , I was fortunate that all my lift kit / brake upgrade/ engine performance upgrades/ lights and light bars/ fuel tanks / water tank / air system / upgraded tyres/ battery bank / twin alternators ect all passed and I have the engineer certification for all, but I still get stopped every now and then but once I show the paperwork all is good. My insurance company is also happy , just a quick note I did increase my GVM TO 3.5 tonnes which allowed me to have stronger drive components which in turn gives me both great on road comfort but great of road capabilities with limited fuss.
can you pm me about this trying to get 35's on 4" done with hybrid superflex kit..thinking of bendix 4" kit but no one up here in QLD I can find whom even engineers patrols anymore for Y61
Great episode mate with insight into the pit falls of modifying your 4 Wheel Drive, thanks for that. I sure there will be many thinking about whether their vehicle comes up to scratch now after watching that. Do you have to keep the original certification in the vehicle or would a copy suffice if pulled over for an inspection ?.
Bloody hell mate, you deserve a few beers after that one haha. Awesome awesome video mate. Soo good to have this info explained and explained well.
Glad you enjoyed it mate!
My Mitsubishi Triton High Rider(L200 or Strada) original wheels were LT205R16. Now I've got 265/75r16LT all terrains. They fit without doing anything to the suspension. The high rider version sits high though
Congrats Tyler on the certification! 🤙. I’m sure that’s a very big deal and a huge weight off your chest, both for legal and safety reasons…. It makes me realize and feel a lot more on how much leniency but also on how much more risky, as far as safety is concerned, things are here in the US. We have NONE of those requirements. Except emissions, and possibly GVM but unless you’re in an accident and insurance has to get involved is when “potentially” it could come into play. Everything else is an easy pass here. I come from a mechanical engineering background so doing things correctly and in spec for my families and others sake is extremely important to me, so it was nice to see all the things that are necessary to have a properly engineered vehicle and what is expected after upgrading and adding mods. And it was also nice to see I have most of those things done. 💪. I would very much like to have a brake test performed even though I upgraded mine. I took plenty of notes. Thanks for this brother… 🙏 Good to see Australia is taking care of their people, even though it may be a bit of a hassle. ❤️🇦🇺 Curious, does your front sway bars need to be installed for it to pass too?
coil suspension allways has swaybars. this engineering is a money grab. im in a 4x4 club, we had a cop talk about mods.. next day you sell your 4x4, cos it aint worth having one. i have a 1975 highboy. cut to swb, 4w disc, 351, 5sp, lockers. 35,s. 26'' to sill. not raised.. metal dash, ford leather s/wheel. 82 bronco sas. 02 s/duty,3'' lift, 35,s. 62 f100 4x4, 352 fe.. &,,a dodge chall r/t 340.. in aus.. were treated like 3 yr olds here. there is no 4x4 industry. just b/bars, r/racks, winches, no d o m . no johny joints, no doublers, no unshitable uni,s. fk all..stupid thing is, you can raise the vehicle 3'' with std pizza cutters..is that safe..no fkn way..comment in u.s. was, if you raise vehicle 3'', get 3'' bigger tires.. to offset weight.centre..even slotted drilled discs are illegal.. i have 4 on the h/boy..sssshhhhh......its illegal....even s/s b/lines, were illegal..this country is fkt..stay home wear your mask,die...thank you for complying..

I was expecting $10,000 plus. I am actually building my 80 Series in a very similar specification as your Patrol. So no, not boring, in fact this video was very interesting to me. I would have been happy to see a more detailed & longer video, although I guess you pretty much covered the main points
What a great video….will be very helpful for a lot of people for a long time. Does you Navara require any engineering or is it within the limits you mention?
Mate, your certainly not the only one to drive without and engineering cert! There are a lot of very dangerous looking 4x4s on the road!
This is a very helpful video, I was thinking of going to 33's for my Hilux and few other mods that will require engineering but I think I'll just stick to legal mods because I can't be bothered with the process
is it ifs..if so, junk it, buy something with 2 diffs. ifs 4x4rs should be banned..hilux roll on swerve test..std..theres a vid on it.. its the moose test. in europe. i have an f250 highboy, here in aus. its 26'' to the sill..std factory..with 35,s..4w disc, 5sp, lockers.. gooo toyota,,no fkn way..

What a good cop. You struck it so lucky mate.
