2 Years Alone Building an Off Grid Log Cabin in the Wilderness, Start to Finish
Reflecting back on the last 2 years spent building an off grid log cabin alone in the Canadian wilderness.
Thanks for watching and Happy New Year! This video is the full version of the 9 minute video on my other channel (Shawn James), which you can watch here: • 2 Years Alone Building...
They both document just the log cabin exterior build, not the creation of the rest of the wilderness homestead, such as the outhouse, food gardens, greenhouse, etc., which can be viewed weekly or by following along in the Playlists on both channels. I'll create and upload an interior cabin video once it's finished later this winter.

I just watched an hour and a half video of a man building a cabin by himself. Today was a good day.
It has been a good day.
Wow before I read your comment I did not even notice I had spent so long watching this

I think people under estimate the overall difficulty of such a task that this man accomplished. The strength, the accuracy, time management (seasons, weather, daylight), the mental aspect (being secluded, wild animals, not close to healthcare, absent from family), oh and documenting all of it, editing and everything else that I missed. My hats off to Shawn. “My self Reliance” I couldn’t thin of a better title. Happy New Year!
Thank you! Happy New Year
Exactly..and its not Shawn's first Cabin....what Shawn does amazes me!!...mind blowing...
110% agree such a talented craftsman. Absolutely fantastic. Hey Shaun I got my “Cabin Life”hoodie for Christmas. Super comfy. Keep up the great content and HNY🎉.
It's definitely a herculean effort! No doubt!
Is this on Patreon?
This man isy hero,I wanted to do this when I was 19 , now I'm 84 and the longing is still there. So I enjoy watching our hero and pretend I'm there with him.
I am 74, you speak from the heart!

Any advice on life to a 30 year old? I appreciate you old timers
I feel like the attraction of achieving this goal is ingrained into our souls before we are born, and when meet others who speak our language it makes sense. I hear you loud and clear, my long lost friend.

@@Vibinzzzz1 That's not funny in the least. In fact, it's awful.
@@Vibinzzzz1 how do you know?
I make no judgement in what caused this persons renal failure. At the age of 60, I was disgusted with my health and realized if I didn’t change my diet, I would face a disease ridden senior life. I changed my diet to LOW CARB…in 10 months, I lost 50 lbs, got off 7 medications and had the best blood test results ever. I eat one 2k-2.5k calorie meal a day between 4-8pm. I fast 20 hours per day and I walk 8 miles every other day. I still follow this way of eating and exercise.
As a man who has trouble putting together IKEA furniture (even with the directions), I am in awe of your amazing skill and hard work. What a beautiful cabin in the woods!
Tip: its not funny or cute but foolish & weak to demean your SELF like that there's plenty of people who are all too willing to do it for you then next take from you all you have and hold most dear if that is what you truly want.

Holy smokes sir…I thought I could watch a video to help me sleep but instead I was so fascinated watching a master builder I couldn’t stop watching and it’s now 12:23 am. I considered my late husband a master builder so I was able to appreciate this so much!! Thank you! I read many comments and couldn’t agree more.
It is mind boggling to see how an extremely difficult task was managed by a single person. His knowledge and ability to use basic tools was very impressive. What the video doesn’t show is how much mental strength he needed to persist to completion. Shawn I congratulate you for completing a monumental job. It was obvious you had the ability to overcome any and all obstacles.
Absolutely nailed it sir! Good comment! I built my house but I used modern tools etc. It was “difficult” to say the least. But the most challenging thing was staying motivated. It is a monumental effort mentally, especially when things aren’t exactly going your way. This guy is an inspiration.
I dont think it was done with simple tools certain parts around the beginning you can see several excavator tracks in the dirt. A monumental task to be sure but theres things he isnt showing you
Watch @Erik Grankvist
My Amish neighbor was a carpenter, and watched him build his house, carriage house, and his barn workshop. It too was an absolute work of art. Few people will ever get to witness such craftsmanship
My Daddy built the house I grew up in, and there aren't many men like him and you left in the world--you're the true heroes! He passed away in September, and my life will never be the same. Several years ago, Daddy and I picked out a spot on our land for a cabin, but for now, I just have to enjoy others building them--this one is spectacular!
I'm sorry for your loss. Keep pushing through this you got it! Maybe one day you'll be able to be with him in heaven an build a cabin together.
Thank you for that! Brings tears to think about that possibility!
I love how the dog is always like “hey let’s play” as he’s digging out dirt and building
It is amazing what can be accomplished when you don't have to spend 8/10 hours a day making someone else rich. You've come a long way. Thank you for letting me follow along.Happy, healthy and prosperous New Year!

@@madd5 Not all employees are treated properly...especially in a modern country like the USA.
@@madd5 Average home price in the US is 428k, the average yearly salary is $54k. Average home price in the US in 1970 was 24k, Average salary was $6100. yes, owning your own business accelerates your chance of becoming wealthy.....btw you can accomplish this same goal by working for someone else...albeit you will get there, it will be at a slow and steady pace......remember...slow and steady always wins the race....lol
@@madd5 OMG another child who thinks anyone criticizing the current system must be a communist. Believe it or not, back in the 40s and 50s, when a whole family of four, a dog and cat, with a two car garage in the suburbs, etc, could be comfortably maintained on _one person's very average nine to five job,_ that was still capitalism. Countries that have free university education, universal healthcare, _those countries are capitalist systems too._ The choices are not only "suffer under the current *incredibly unbalanced* system" or "turn into China" you know. There are an infinite number of ways to improve people's lives within a capitalist system that we are not doing -- mainly because people have been told to believe that any improvement is socialism and bad for... some reason they don't understand and can't explain.
I do believe that this is every young man’s dream as a kid we used to dream about building something like this in the woods since we learned about stacking pencils in school lol anyway GOOD JOB ENJOYED WATCHING THANKS 👍❤️😁
This man is a legend! I cannot fathom the dedication, skill, and sheer willingness he possesses to complete this project. I often feel overwhelmed when looking up at my towering goals, but this inspires me to keep moving forward no matter the size of the mountain ahead of me.
MAN...the construction skills you have, foundation, basement, burning those logs, and moving those heavy logs, let alone the fabulous insulation: this will be a toasty warm castle for you. WELL DONE
When I saw you are building your cabin under the heavy snow I remembered my father that he passed away since seven years, his job was construction he was always working under the snow ❄️. God bless you and RIP my father. Men always worked for their families, he raised us with his own fatigue and I appreciate every dad that worked so hard. God bless you again.
Amen to that 💪💪🙏
If theres going to be an apocalypse I want to be with Shawn. This man is beyond a mans man.
Wow....can't even believe one man did this alone. It's gorgeous!
Absolutely awesome! Years from now this cabin will be mistaken for something that has been preserved from 100+ years ago, while outlasting the garbage products and craftsmanship of our modern 'convenience'.
Well made log cabin can last long time, my family has old stable which is made 1812. Its worst enemy is sun, southern wall vaporize slowly away, 3 other walls are in good condition.
So true and his girls and grandkiddies will be proud.
It says a lot about a man when animals, women, and children can relax in his presence. It never fails to strike me how good Shawn's vibes must be.
Your comment... u understood everything

Many Men have the financial ability to support such an undertaking yet lack the skills ,stamina ,mental and physical ability while many men only lack the financial ability to achieve such a task. A task such as this takes so much more than what is being shown. Success must first be achieved in society in order to be able to fund such an undertaking. Hats off to you for such a very hard journey and work in order to even be able to start a project like this. I sure hope someone who receives this one day understands what it took to happen. One doesn't simply trot of into the wilderness ,drop some trees and build a cabin ....years, n years of hard work long before the first tree was ever felled 👍💯
Amazing job!
Not only a master carpenter, engineer and then some, that is one serious dude. This guy is no joke. Beautiful work and dedication to a task without compromising.
I have built many things by myself, but this has to be the toughest man I've ever seen. What an accomplishment. Something to be proud of.
It was a blessing in disguise that the neighbor from his first home caused so much problems. It was a sad day when he announced he was selling and starting all over again. I remember thinking then that the Lord was going to give him a better home and more beautiful piece of land. So many prayers later coupled with an incredible tenacity and ingenuity very few can muster, Shawn has built a beautiful home for himself and his wife. ❤ & ✊🏻 for this man from us all here. Blessed CHRISTmas and ‘23 to you Shawn + your lovely family.
That amount of tenacity and grits displayed by this man is overwhelming. 👍
Shawn, there are not many people in this world who can say, they handled each and every piece of building their home. You are amazing. Hut ab.

It's been two years already?! Man, there is a lot in there I forgot was done. Considering all this was done by one man, it's an amazing accomplishment.
A real man in the truest sense of the word. Incredible determination and graft.
This is incredibly fascinating to me. Not only because of the skill and craftsmanship, and my fantasy of building an off grid homestead, but because this has 7.4 million views! - which tells me others have the same thoughts!
I just found what I will do for the last hour and 25 mins at work on last day of 2022. Thank you Shawn.
What I would've done to be on that site working with this man, and absorbing every single moment of perspicacious knowledge I could. This is the work of a man that has overcome many trials. I have nothing but the utmost respect and admiration.
I'm always impressed watching you do this, not just for your skill and dedication, but also for your planning and understanding of your own capablities. Every task undertaken is one that's within your ablities, if only just barely. That's an increadable amount of good judgement.
You are unbelievable!!! My hats off to you Shawn for your skills and knowledge in this hard hard work. You are helping so many other people in accomplishing their goals. I think we’ll see a lot more people doing exactly what you’re doing.
I've thoroughly enjoyed watching your journey from start to finish. I'm chuckling to myself as I imagine environmentalists cringing in unity at the sight and sound of falling trees while sipping on their lattes as they scroll on their phones in some metropolis. Nice job Shawn.
A great example of “you reap what you sow”. You set a great example of perseverance; what you have accomplished in amazing. May you and your family have many years to enjoy the peace and beauty of your homestead. Happy and blessed New Year.

Taking Lincoln logs to the ultimate level.
I love the shot when the first top log drops into place and all the snow drops off 39:57, very satisfying & seems like a real land mark in the build.
An astonishing solo achievement. Knowledge, skill, persistence and sheer hardworking, maybe a bit of bloody mindedness to get through the weather battered times. Hats off to you. 👍🪒😬 Phil. Suffolk U.K.
I've been watching for several years, it's amazing!! Such a lost talent, a lost art, all of this used to be common place for men. More men today should know how to do these things!! I hope more young men will be inspired & try doing a smaller version!! Hard work is gratifying especially building something with your own 2 hands & the satisfaction that comes from it!!
Had to slow this down to 1/2 speed.. thought of all that work was making me struggle to eat my Xmas pudding !
What an incredible achievement. The guy is a hero! Unimaginable strength and determination, blood sweat and grit. I've been watching a lot of log cabin builds and I think this has got to be the best one I've seen! Astonishing.
A true master craftsman at work here, measure thrice and cut once. I love the mix of old school and new, a real pleasure to watch! Awesome!
I'm no longer so proud of the shed I built. Your precision and skill is second to none. You sir deserve a beer.
Since I watched your very first video, I have been in awe of your abilities and endurance. I look forward to your future plans and beautiful videos that bring me hope and calm, inspiration, and joy. May your family and Calli be well and happy in the coming year!!
Absolutely, not just the difficulty but the determination and effort put forth is off the charts. Lots of people today can't even take their garbage cans to the street.
I have huge respect for what you have done here. Just amazing.. I’m honestly amazed

Golden retrievers make the best supervisors! I would have to have double the amount of tools because my Golden would steal the tools behind my back! Your pup looks so happy to have their toy thrown! I have to admit my back hurts watching you work so hard! Your hard work is impressive!
This man is an old soul. So much knowledge to do such a spectacular job. I can barely boil an egg. love it! 🌟
Craftsmanship out of the top drawer, that was just incredible on so many levels👌
I think it's just insane to think how much work, effort and sweat Shawn has put into his dream of living off the grid and being self reliant. Cheers to you Shawn! You have done a wonderful job and I'm glad that you took us all with you on this journey. You have what we Finns call Sisu!
Absolutely! Shawn is a relentless worker.
One meal one bite at a time…small steps for everything…be present every moment…everyone can do it…but not many people are willing to focus and try to do it…
👍 И не только Финны, но и Русские аплодируют стоя перед упорством и трудолюбием Шона!!!!! Браво Шон!!! 👏👏👏
Absolutely incredible watching the seasons change during the build, fit and finish of this cabin is astounding, the will and determination is off the charts. The ridge beam and purlins and the trust you had with that cable and hoist system, it is incredible that you were not seriously injured alone in the middle of nowhere, you must have spent weeks, just keeping the tools sharp. I have never witnessed anything like this in my entire life, absolutely incredible, my friend. You have built yourself a fortress, and filmed it for all to see, what an accomplishment, hats off to ya sir, this cabin will stand for decades, all the best for you and your family in 2023, we thankyou for bringing us along.

Oh, totally, this is THAT granddaddy that people talk about.
The long winding road from trees to cabin took its toll but look at the resulting videos achieved and the masses that stayed with you Shawn and Cali. All the best for tomorrow - 1st January 2023
Every THUD of the logs rolling into place... Beautiful.
Wow! If I hadn’t seen this with my own eyes I would never have believed one man built this cabin. Using nothing but skill, knowledge and tools that were used by his forefathers. That cabin will still be standing 100 years from now. This is the first flog I’ve seen from this channel, I’m going to binge watch the others now. I’m just in awe .
Boy GOD was with you doing that. Especially when you had that window pushing it up and it could have fallen on your head. Stay safe and may GOD watch over you.🙏😊 also where you were putting the roof on. Your ideas were amazing. 😊

Shawn really outdid himself on this build . Just hoisting those giant logs overhead had me nervous.. What a magnificent cabin.
Sitting here watching and I am young you can tell this guy lives in a different time era... Respect. if life was this simple it looks peaceful
Grandchildren(if would be any) of this man will be remembering their Grandpa for this Historic gift.
Happy New Year Shawn, as we say Goodbye to 2022 and Welcome 2023 you have a lot to be proud of mainly being able to replicate Dick Proenneke in his move to Alaska in his 50's - he lived almost another life in the wilderness. Wishing you and your family the best for 2023!!
Thanks for sharing this extended version. I really enjoyed watching it.
This is more like a real log cabin construction compared to some others which I see using commercial lumber. I am very impressed with the effort he is putting into this build. Just digging down through those roots and hard dirt reminded me of how hard it is to do. Moving all those large logs is very dangerous and you have to know what you are doing not to get hurt. Rather than the chain saw board cutter I would have gone with the one with the large circular saw blade and used it to make regular lumber for the floor joists, wall studs and rafters. But then it would not look like a log cabin. I don't know about using wood for the below grade foundation, rock and some kind of cement would be my choice. He knows what he is doing because he always has the right tool to get it done. Kudos to all the great video shots of the work, makes me feel like I am right there watching it being done.
That's one of the most beautiful pictures I've ever seen. The cabin on top of the hill in a good snow storm. Reminds me of a lodge I stayed in on top of the Cascades in Oregon. Anyone who doesn't like that has something basically wrong with them. Excellent, absolutely magnificent. That is what I would call a multi discipline masterpiece. I believe I've seen several that you crested and that's just what I've seen on the internet. Most people go their whole lives without even creating one. I feel like I built one in Nebraska back in 99. That was a good year for me and my traveling journeyman partner. Rest in peace Billy Adams Waycross,Ga 2015😇. Thanks Shawn
"No, you can't stay there pup", says it all. I appreciate the man that knows how to get it done but still has a caring eye for his best friend. I love this. Beautiful! Lucky dog.

We've been watching since you started your first cabin. It was unfortunate to see you go, but given the circumstances we don't blame you. We love THIS CABIN so much more! Possibly, it's because of the root cellar, the style and overall length. You've put yourself through some trying times and you stand by the title of your KZhead name! Where did he go?
@@dylanmccoy6029 Shawn originally built his first cabin (on this YT page) and other structural log buildings way more than 2 years ago. All that tedious work, by hand, on the same property, but in a different location. That first phase had an old-fashioned laundry room, sauna, outdoor kitchen, shed, outhouse etc... Sold it. You'd have to see if the video's are still up? Then you'd understand why the relocation. But, at least, this new cabin is much larger with a huge, root cellar and he installed/built an enclosed semi-hydroponic greenhouse and shed. Shawn is a determined man with a strong disposition. He is Self Reliance. 👍
@@goingagainstthegrain do you know why he sold it?
@@Jimimac73 I believe he mentioned someone buying the plot closer to his own, and it was too much noise, interaction and proximity to the new developers. He picked a father area on his own huge plot. Hope that helps. 😊
