The Tesla Model S P100D is one of the fastest production vehicles the world has ever seen. It accelerates from 0-60 mph in just 2.5 seconds, powered by dual, three-phase, four-pole motors. One motor in the front, and one in the rear means intelligent AWD that can independently control the torque bias front and rear.
The 315 mile range P100D is also designed to be incredibly safe, with all 5-star crash ratings, a super low center of gravity, and a large front crumple zone. It also features over-the-air software updates improving the vehicle with time. It was a blast to drive, check out the video for the full review!

  • Model S owner here! Just two points: * the Cd for the Model S is actually 0.24, not 0.23; the Model 3, however, has a Cd of 0.23 (Tesla was targeting, but failed to achieve, 0.21). Also, as you certainly know, it's the CdA that matters and the Model S has a cross section area (is that the correct vocable?) of 2.4 m^2; * if you can spare the time, I'd love to see a video of yours explaining the different types of electric motors used by the EV industry. For instance, the Model S uses induction motors front and rear, but the Model 3 uses a PMSR motor at the rear (Permanent Magnet, Switched Reluctance) -- and an induction motor at the front. Most other manufacturers as far as I can tell use synchronous, permanent magner motors. (and by the way, mine is a 90D, not a P100D... I wish I had waited a little longer and bought a 100D but meh)

    • Polyphase Machine. 3 minimum, needed to determine direction; forward or reverse. Machine, because it can work as either a motor, or a generator. Note regenerative braking, is the motor acting as a generator. That's why electrical engineers often refer to them as "machines", instead of motor or generator. Also, the power from the power company, since Westinghouse using Tesla design, has been 3 phase. Late 1800s, so nothing new. Your house only gets split-phase (120-0-120). The power company taps off 2 of the phases, per residential neighborhood (A-B, A-C, or B-C). But if you're in a commercial, business, or industrial zoned area, the power will be all three phases. Also patents only last 20 years (if actively extended).

  • Actually, being induction motors, there are no discrete poles on the rotor. Instead, each of the three phase windings on the armature (stator) has four poles. A common misconception is that the armature is the part that moves, but in electrical machinery, it is the part in which power conversion takes place. In this case that is the stationary "stator" part of the machine.

    • The Tesla is very good in the city, accelerating in a straight line and on the highways; but on mountain roads (and I mean Alpine mountain roads, not those huge things you got there on that side of the pond) you feel its weight. And that's normal, that's not a sports car... Which makes what it does even more impressive. Imagine a Rimac C_2...

    • Anankin12 You definitely feel the weight especially when exiting a tight turn where you pushed it near its limits. There's enough of over-steering from the inertia at the moment when you want to catapult it out of the turn in the straight line to make it something to factor in your handling. That said scaling Alpine mountain roads like there is almost no slope is always pure joy (the descent is less joyful and only fun, I'll concede that).

  • The model S P100D use 3ph induction motors, i.e. there are no permanent magnetic poles on the rotor. The "4 poles" represent 4 poles per phase or 2 pole pairs per phase i.e. 2 north and south per phase on the stator. The magnetic field excitation is inducted into the rotor via copper bars i.e. a squirrel cage by the relative speed of the rotating field of the stator and rotor.

    @dillondeonath4209@dillondeonath42095 жыл бұрын
    • Correct, the rotor does not use permanent magnets for poles, the poles are induced. (Explained here: kzhead.info/sun/eLuTm6qQa2qsqGg/bejne.html)

      @EngineeringExplained@EngineeringExplained5 жыл бұрын
    • Correct. There really isn't a physical count of the number of poles on the rotor in this case. The induced fields from the four poles (12 total because of three phase) on the stator gives the electromagnetic appearance of four poles on the rotor.

      @radon360@radon3605 жыл бұрын
  • These are, more precisely, 3-phase 4-pole AC induction motors. The rotor is asynchronous versus the rotating magnetic field of the stator. The Leaf and the Model 3 uses 3-phase AC synchronous permanent magnets motors, which are a bit more efficient vs the induction motor.

    @pxidr@pxidr5 жыл бұрын

    • In an induction motor, the rotating magnetic field of the stator induces a current in the conducting rotor. This current induced in the rotor creates its own (electro)magnetic field which interacts with the stator magnetic field causing the rotor to rotate in the same direction as the rotating magnetic field. The 4 poles are related to the number of separate coils for each phase wound on the stator. This number of pokes determines the maximum speed of the motor for any given frequency.

  • Phenomenal video and happy you finally got the chance to test out the P100D. Technological masterpiece of this era. I have one recommendation for the video though. You mentioned that the car is “fast” multiple times, but I think better and more proper terminology is “quick.” I used to use the two interchangeable until I became a cult follower of Tesla (lol), and in relation to other high-end cars, a 155 mph top speed is nothing. Just a thought! Have a great weekend 😊

    @CallMeWalshy@CallMeWalshy5 жыл бұрын
    • I’m a bit late, but the 155mph top speed is electronically limited. A lot of performance cars nowadays have their top speed limited to around 155mph, so there’s no telling exactly how fast the Tesla model S really is (although, with almost 700hp and a super low drag, I bet it could go over 300km/h).

      @beanapprentice1687@beanapprentice1687 Жыл бұрын
  • Love your videos and have sent your previous one on carbon totals to several people. You don't quite have the induction motor 4-pole correct. The stator and the rotor have 4-poles and becuase of induction the poles on the stator drag and attract the poles on the rotor so the pedal creates magnets on the stator that induce magnets on the rotor and spin it around.

    @DasCracker@DasCracker5 жыл бұрын
    • That's a much better way of explaining it, thanks for sharing! I was certainly trying to oversimplify it (as I understand the poles are induced, not permanent magnets). But yes, four poles on the stator causing the four poles on the rotor to rotate. :)

  • Great video. Tesla actually under quotes the times of the lesser models, I guess to differentiate from the P100D. The actual times are: 75D best of 3.7 at high state of charge but around 4.0 mostly 100D 3.6 P100D 2.28 with Ludicrous+ and light factory wheels, either the 19s in this video or the Arachnid 21s which are both lighter than the standard 21s. Also all seat materials are vegan, leather is not used anymore apart from the steering wheel cover. Oh and the front reduction gear is a different ratio to the rear so you can cruise efficiently at highway speeds using the small motor. This is the reason why the dual motor cars actually have more range than the lighter rear drive cars with the same battery pack.
