  • Read "Breaking Points" by Hinckleys Parents to get another perspective of this story. Very sad. We need a population educated on brain illnesses like schizophrenia ...it would certainly help.

  • Hinkley suffered from untreated schizophrenia. Ironically Ronald Reagan is a big reason so many long term psychiatric hospitals closed but Reagon did not pour money into alternatives as Kennedy had planned before his murder...therefore we now have no help for people like Hinkley unless they have aware educated parents or get into serious trouble with the law. Untreated, many people with brain illnesses can become delusional and hallucinating and eventually tricked into taking drugs and then become chronically homeless cause no one in society is looking out for them and there are not enough people going into psychiatry or careers to treat them as its usually low paying. Usually only people with someone close to them who gets schizophrenia ends up going into psychiatry field.

    • Oh, it's worse than that, Jimmy Carter had it all sorted out with outpatient support and outreach in the works and had secured full funding for it. One of the first things Reagan did when he got in office was to scrap the whole thing. Here are some fun numbers for you... 1955 The total U.S. population was 161,136,449. With 560,000 psychiatric beds Now:The total U.S. population is 327,200,000. The U.S. now has 37,679 state psychiatric beds, that's for the whole country! They have made it almost impossible to force someone in to a hospital, and the ones that need the help the most are unable see they have a problem because their brain is literally not working right. And the ones that aren't as bad off may want to get into a hospital but are unable to find space available. I've worked at a homeless shelter for 8 years and plenty of times it too bad for us to keep them and the cops are the ones that dumped them on us. Example: One lady would get up 7-9 or more at night, get in people's faces, and full-volume yell about the devil being in her butt! Or the lady who tries to say other people's young children are her and we had to block the door because she tried to take a baby. Clearly if we have any moms with kids younger than a teenager I can't take a chance with her.

    • Really is sad - it is a vulnerable segment of society that isn't great at advocating for themself - they get left behind then everyone wants to complain about a delusional person doing a crime or all the homeless people. Often there is some hand holding and investment required, but with the appropriate help a lot of these people can live decent lives and be contributing members of society. Guess my point is, the same people who are the first to complain and want to punish these people are the exact same people that refuse to part with a penney for social services. They come from a good family, have normal mental health and are doing well - anyone who isn't doing as well as them simply needs to pull themselves up by the boot straps. What these fiscal conservatives don't understand is that an once of prevention is worth a pound of cure - some basic support and healthcare costs a fraction of incarceratring these people.

Every vote for a republican on the issue of the economy for the past 40 years, by anybody making less than a million a year, has been a shotgun blast right in their own foot. But they keep doing it.

    • America is partisan because of how our political system works as a dual-party system. Washington warned us about this. It's just that it was only with the rise of the modern conservative movement where they really started to develop it and define themselves as opposition to Democrats at all costs. Nute Gingritch really began that style, but the seeds were already being sewn.

    • It was mentioned in another documentary. Hinckley was obsessed with Jodi from the movie "Taxi Driver". Where Jodi was 14 or 16 at the time, playing the role of a 12 year old prostitute. He reportedly watched the movie over 15 times. The plot of the movie is actually Robert De Niro, playing a loner taxi cab driver who dreams of "saving the world" and cleaning up the city. So he plots to take out the Presidential candidate, and then he becomes obsessed with Jodi Foster in the movie. Hinckley was basically playing out the movie, but in real life.

  • John Hinkley certainly was a victim of mental illness. What he did was horrific and he served his sentence as he should. John went into remission and eventually was granted weekends to stay with his mom. Of course eventually Hinkley was set free and is monitored by mental health experts as a condition of his parole. Anyone wanting to see John Hinkley can look him up on KZhead as he play’s the acoustic guitar and performs cover’s as well as songs he written. This generates an income stream for John and he has many supporters. His new found freedom is controversial but he seems to have made a lot of progress and for that I wish him well.
