  • Rule 219 of The Highway Code states: 'You should look and listen for ambulances, fire engines, police, doctors or other emergency vehicles using flashing blue, red or green lights and sirens or flashing headlights, or Highways Agency Traffic Officer and Incident Support vehicles using flashing amber lights. When one approaches do not panic. Consider the route of such a vehicle and take appropriate action to let it pass, while complying with all traffic signs. If necessary, pull to the side of the road and stop, but try to avoid stopping before the brow of a hill, a bend or narrow section of road. Do not endanger yourself, other road users or pedestrians and avoid mounting the kerb. Do not brake harshly on approach to a junction or roundabout, as a following vehicle may not have the same view as you.' Therefore, as outlined above, if there is an emergency vehicle behind you with its emergency warning signals on, it might be possible for you to manoeuvre out of the way to allow it through. Ideally this should be to the side of the road without encroaching into the main area of the junction (see below). It should only be done when it is safe to do so without putting yourself or other members of the public in danger and it should only be done slowly and carefully. If you do cross the stop line at the junction whilst the lights are on red, you will commit the offence of contravening a red traffic light. It's important to remember that in committing the offence (crossing the stop line) the onus will be on you to provide evidence that you did so to allow an emergency vehicle through. That may be considered as mitigation, but there is no guarantee that it will be. If the police decide to prosecute you for the offence and you choose to challenge that decision, it will ultimately be a matter for a court to decide.

    • Spoiler: in pretty much all cases of prosecution due to causing a traffic offence whilst allowing an emergency vehicle to pass, end up with the driver being convicted.

  • 0:31 the responder was late cancelling the tones but did eventually just to reactivate them ten seconds later at 0:41 defeating the whole point in cancelling the tones in the first place, no driver is exempt from running reds, what the officer should have done is continued ahead then turned right and gone on his way much faster, what the police and courts think are two different things, police think you should move for them regardless where as the courts say you shouldn't run reds or enter bus lanes etc for them and will prosecute you for it, my advice would be to pass this footage on so the officer can be given words of advice and is told not to try and force drivers to commit offences. I know people will say "if this was your family bla bla" the responder even if it was a ambulance could have continued ahead and cut right instead they went behind the white car which clearly had no where to go so that's on them, they created the situation by not thinking ahead which is apart of blue light driving, uniformed officers can take control of traffic and direct vehicles but they have to be out the vehicle and in uniform which this officer was sat in his car with no way of judging risk or directing traffic if needed making it dangerous neither did he give any instructions to the driver in front.

Had the white car gone through the red with a gatso camera, he'd get points & a fine so car was legally correct to wait & the bully knew it which is why he first waited & silenced the wailers but became impatient

  • This is on the police though. Drivers are not allowed to go through a red light even if an emergency vehicle is behind them trying to get through. What the cop car should have done instead is take the lane to the left (Where there were no cars as the lights were green) and simply turn right through the turning lane or whatever that lane is and pass the traffic lights like that.
