A simple way to refill an empty lighter.
I made this video because someone posted a picture of an empty lighter that was sentimental to them, so I promised them I'd show them how to refill it. Also, there are a lot of collectible BIC lighters that you want to keep using.
its not about saving money. its about keeping that favorite lighter alive
Yea, I’ve been saving my Seahawks superbowl lighter. Now I might use it.

Yeah I still have my shamrock lighter and I might actually use it again
Jay DoBetter exactly, I drew a picture on mine then put boxing tape over it. Nice to know I don’t gotta draw that shit again took me an hour😂
Back in May, I had a friend who committed suicide and I kept his little bic lighter that he always used. I can tell the fluid is going to run out soon, so thanks for this. I want to use it for a while.
Desiree Barakat So sad. I pray for your friend, the family and friends (you).
The reason I made this video was for someone who had a sentimental lighter too. If you have any questions, I can help you make sure it works right. I am going to be making a Part 2 video with a much easier method, so let me know if you have any problems getting it refilled. Take care, and that's very unfortunate about your friend. Also, I'm sorry it took me so long to come upon this comment and delete the troll comments. I hope you are doing better by now.
Still deleting trolls for you, Desiree, I'm sorry if they keep popping up. Send me your lighter and I will do it for you if you want to make sure it refills correctly.
Sam Maghsoodloo hi you are a good guy trying to help the lady with the lighter refill and deleting the idiots that are leaving those nasty messages. God bless, Nadine

This doesn't work at all I tried it like 10 times and just wasted butane. I tried to hold the butane and put the tack in as quick as possible and weighed the lighter after it was barely over 17 grams almost empty and wasted all the fuel each time. Plus it slowly leaks out and goes empty again within a few lights. And pushing that tack in and out is not easy either. I don't know how the hell youd pull a flat tack out without anything to grab onto
I've done this but to seal it I use a brass thumb tack. not only is the surfaceflat, the needle diameter is slightly wider than a push pin creating a superior seal.
Very smart! I will use brass tacks from now on!
Thanks for the tip! Will try.
right on
Hell yeah. I guess I better go grab the bic I just threw away.
lol, just BUY a refill valve for it. They're cheap.
When you buy a disposable lighter, you always lose it. When you find a disposable lighter, it always runs out. This video is a nice solution for the latter. If you use a flathead metal thumbtack, you wouldn’t need to use the cutters or have a wart on the bottom. Thanks for a great technique !
and when you lose a disposable lighter, it's always because you let someone borrow it, and they instinctively 'slipped' it in their pocket.
Thanks from Germany, for this top little movie.
THANK YOU SO MUCH! You have no idea how many tutorial videos are so bad at explaining things and expect me to know how to do similar things. If I knew that I wouldn't be watching a tutorial. You are straight to the point, clear and concise.
I had the pleasure of working at Bic in Toronto for a few years. Lmao. The factory is in the middle of one of their largest markets there - Jane and Finch! All joking aside, they were a great company to work for. At least at that location. I like the fact I am not only saving my favorite lighter, but it's one of the only ways to recycle them!

Same for me. Got some really cool Bics when I was in Tokyo last September. They're all still pretty full but I'm dreading the day when they give up on me. This method is OK I guess, pretty nifty. But can't I like contact the Bic company and see if they can refill it for me? I don't really care much about the cost.

I'm glad you posted this because there are too many of these things in landfills and in the ocean and every place else I think it's great if people can do this and it only took you just a couple minutes!
It was a sad day when they stopped making them with the adjustable wheel. I used to fill those by taking apart the top, adjusting the wheel until it was held in by only a few threads which made it loose enough for the butane to go in easily. [there was a spring with a felt pad under the adjuster] The butane can tip would fit perfectly in the hole of the adjuster and make a seal. I used the white, yellow and blue ones for this because I could put a flashlight behind it and see the fill level. When you pull the can away only a tiny bit of gas would come out while you quickly adjusted it all the way shut. [You may lose only .000001% of the butane, really insignificant.] Put it back together and away you go. The flint they use eventually wears out and it is larger diameter than a standard Zippo lighter flint, but the Zippo would still work. After they stopped making them with the adjuster, I wasn't about to give up on them Now instead of the threaded adjuster system, they just went to an aluminum sleeve that is pressed into the plastic case that the valve then slides into. Take the lighter apart, break the plastic out around the front so you can get small electronic side cutters to grip the top of the aluminum sleeve. Being careful not to squeeze too hard as to collapse the sleeve you pull it out of the plastic. Now comes the tricky part. Motion and vibration is the enemy. The colder the outside temperature the better. You are now able to see into the bottom of the tank. Hold the lighter firmly with the opening pointing up on a hard flat surface, or in a vice as tight as possible without cracking the plastic. Put the butane can into the hole [obviously upside down] and fill the tank. Slowly release the gas pressure a little at a time until it is all gone so the butane can is able to be removed without the liquid fuel blasting out all at once. I wouldn't recommend it but you could look down the hole and be able to see the liquid fuel sitting there in open atmosphere. Carefully grab the aluminum sleeve and press it into the hole and then use the electronic side cutters close using the flat bottom press the sleeve all the way back in. Now you are safe, put the lighter back together and enjoy your fully refilled lighter replacing the flint with a Zippo one as needed. I refill the clear plastic one the way I used to do the adjustable Bic lighters but the problem with those is after a few refills the plastic is so thin that it gets weak and brittle that they arbitrarily crack and if you leave in in the car on a hot day it cracks with all the fuel leaking out. One other thing is to not fill it more that 80% to allow for expansion, otherwise any lighter would crack and leak out.
I buy vintage metal lighters now but before I always wondered how people filled a BIC through the flame valve. I just did a refill type b valve. Thanks for satisfying my curiosity!
Id like to add to make sure that the wheel is put back rolling in the same direction too, or it won't strike in the direction to ignite. Has like directional grooves.
@@beththompson5845actually that's not down to the wheel. It's down to the shape of the flint caused by the wheel. Eventually it will reshape and if ignite. At least that's how it works with most lighters. I've found this to be the case in the past. It doesn't work the first 10 or so attempts. But then after it tends to work
Cool. BTW, I'm always amused to see how many people just derail in negative insults and just plain ignorant comments. Every time. If a dude wants to make a vid on refilling Bics, why not? We all ended up watching it and 99% of us ended up here by watching numerous other vids about tons of subjects. If you don't like a vid, go to the next one and chill. I would likely not refill my Bics but I learned about that BB they use as a stopper. That's enough for me. You all have a great day now and try to be a bit more mellow, life is short.
Well said. It's not always about the task but what you learn from seeing how it's done. I wouldn't refill one either but that dosen't mean it wasn't interesting to know how it could be done should I ever have a need or what I may be able to apply to some other problem. And I'll guarantee 99% of the people throwing insults and abuse don't have one single hands on thing they have done here.
A voice of reason
couz10 yeah exactly. He doesn't suggest that it would be because you can't buy another, or any other reason not to replace it. These are not refillable lighters and he has a "how to" vid on a way to refill it. That is reason enough to post a vid, some folks may find it interesting for no other reason. That's kinda what KZhead was originally for, I thought....

A great alternative to landfill. Thanks for posting!
Go go Captain Planetsaver!
hell yeah its not like the smoke is still gonna ruin the environment.
An even better alternative is not to buy a disposable plastic item in the first place tbh. Bic has been one of the biggest offender's of plastic in nature, due to basing their whole business model around this, cheap disposable products. Specially disposable empty pens It's worth it to pay a little more for a metal lighter that is way easier to refill and will last for a long time, so you don't have to keep buying new lighters. Same thing with razors, it's better to get a metal safety razor that will last indefinitely than buying disposable plastic razors
For all you haters, it's just a fun little project to try, give him a break. If you push the pin in enough, it won't pop out, I've never had that issue, I've filled tons of bic lighters. In the long run do you save a lot of money, uhm to be honest if you consider you're time and effort...not too much, but like I said it's just a fun little project. Not hating on this, but I will say thumbtacks on the bottom of bic lighters does kinda scream "t-w-e-a-k-e-r" lol 😜

Hahaha. Totally. But such a brilliant hack. I've been purchasing the classic CLIPPER lighters and CLIPPERS ARE REFILLABLE! They made a thing for that 20 years ago.
@@vorshack8968 oh yeah? Link it. The only thing I've ever seen - and i'm 50 years old and was a smoker for 30 years - was those holder things that you put your lighter in that attaches to your keychain and they were too big and bulky.

@@Pharto_Stinkus Hmm, I had posted a link but that comment seems to have been deleted.
@@vorshack8968 Well it doesn't really matter if the link just pointed to another one of the lighter "cases" which attached to your keychain, like I already mentioned above. I know those exist but they add bulk and weight. The brilliance of the whole split loop through the lighter thing that started this thread, is that its low profile and doesn't add any bulk or weight.
Yes, as long as the hole doesn't get too widened from repeated plugging. When the lighter is completely empty, pull the pushpin out with some pliers.
“As long as the hole doesn’t get too widened from repeated plugging” - That’s what she said.
There are two ways you can do this without rubber things. (I've been refilling bic lighters since a few years before this video was posted) First, you can just commando it put the nozzle on the hole, and press down, this way makes butane spray everywhere including on yourself, so be careful not to give your self frost bite or someshit, but it also fills it faster. The second is by cutting a quarter off of a pencil eraser (obviously measurements vary) and either putting a hole down the middle or cutting it in half and duct taping it down, and insert it onto the nozzle, place firmly on the torch and slowly add the butane. doing it the first way, it doesn't matter how fast you push it down, it will still spray, so I usually do it hard and fast. I can already see the "that's what she said comments"
Thanks bro
Since nobody bit, I’ll go ahead & take it ; that’s what she said .
and after going through all of this the flint runs out....
Pop the flintwheel out, the flint is loaded on a spring underneath. Replace with a zippo flint and you're good to go
Altair Ramar the flints in a nice are super long, check next time your box dies. When you take it out, it’ll still be longer than a brand new zippo flint. It’s probably like the size of three zippo flints when new. Should last a good while if you actually refilled the bic
@@NiceRage2009 i always get the lighters which have a way too short flint. Gallons of gas remain in the lighter, but the flint is gone.
@@bertjesklotepino now that's a big lighter
Hold the lighter in a vise of some sort, and do it outside, away from any sources of heat or flame, and have an extinguisher available, wear natural, flame resistant clothing and googles/face protection. Set everything up before you start, run dry runs until you can go from step to step without the instructions. Gas fueled fires mover very fast, any light fabric is a likely fire if it's nearby. Take care to work safely and you will be safe.
Why lose the factory seal? You can fill one by the valve at the top. Take the metal guard off and wedge the valve open. Butane nozzle fits right over it. When filled, remove the piece you wedged the valve open with and it's just as safe as new.
You can try to cool down butane and the lighter, before the procedure. It will minimise the spray after filling.
Very well explained and filmed. It was very useful for me. Thanks.
Hey! Thanks so much! Your little trick well outperformed the way I was doing it, I'd jam the butane nozzle in without anything, i just bored out the fill hole with a tiny drill bit just to move some plastic out of the way and try to make it more like I was inserting the nozzle instead of just pressing it out of the hole and just hoping i got a little inside. I took the little rubber sizer slide thingies that come on some cloth reusable masks, everybody has seen them by now, most likely have some still. It's tiny, rubber, has a hole in it to put the mask string through, then you slide it to fit...... well, most of us (had my second shot 5 weeks ago) don't need the masks around anymore, take your little rubber sizers off, slide it over your butane nozzle thingie, then jam er down into the lighter, I find one big continuous shot of it works best, yes a little will leak and shoot out..... Little tricks are always nice to have in your bag. Nice demo. Thanks
I have a suggestion since the butane needs heat to evaporate so after punching the hole put the lighter in the freezer until it gets cold then wrap it in a piece of fabric then continue, this way you don't have to rush to take off the tank and insert the pin inside the hole because liquid Butane can not evaporate in a cold environment so you keep more fuel inside of lighter and it is going to have more life.

Wouldn't a flat thumb tack work better?
+Katrina Faltysek With the need for speed in plugging the hole before the butane leaks out I think a push pin would be much easier to hold on to.
Just a tip ,when filling the lighter with butane it should only take about 10 seconds to fill that later butane in the can is under extreme pressure so when you push down on the nozzle releasing it it empties into whatever container you're trying to fill super quick so 30 seconds is a bit of overkill but by all means do what you wish I'm just letting you know 10 seconds is plenty of time I've watched torch style lighters fill up in a matter of three seconds and there container space that holds the butane was three times the amount of a BIC lighter so it happens really quick even 10 seconds is overkill
This seems pretty dangerous. I'm not talking about the process of refilling it; if done right, the danger from that can be managed. I'm more talking about the danger of the pin being pulled out. I can imagine that happening and posing a frost burn or fire hazard, especially if you don't clip the pin. Clipping the pin makes it a lot harder to accidentally pull out, and therefore safer, though you'd ideally want to glue it on as well.
The pin has a lot of friction on it. After doing this for years, the pin has never pulled out, but the plastic around the pin has broken off a few times. The filling is definitely the dangerous part.
If you're capable of pulling it out manually, it's possible to have it pull out on accident. Just because it hasn't happened to you doesn't mean it won't happen. Even if it's incredibly unlikely, if you play the numbers game long enough, you'll eventually lose. Eventually it'll snag on something just right in your pocket, or the pin will gradually widen the diameter of the hole as it's pulled out to refill over time and stop fitting so snug. You and I would probably realize that's an issue, but does that mean that everyone who watches the video will? Making the pin as hard to accidentally pull out as possible is just a good idea. Trimming the pin does this, so it shouldn't be an optional step (and using pins that are just more flush to the lighter from the beginning would be even better). A bead of superglue around the outside of the pin would be good too - if done right, it would be possible to intentionally break for later refilling, but difficult to completely break on accident.
If the pin comes out, it's just a little 2 second stream of butane that hisses out. It isn't going to blow up your house. I've done this for quite a while and it never happens.
The flammability isn't what I was saying was dangerous - when compressed gas, especially gases that compress to a fluid, expand, their temperature drops considerably due to the relationship of temperature, pressure, and volume. If you've ever used canned air and had water condense and even freeze on the can, or had any liquid accidentally spray out and cause water to freeze on whatever it lands on, it's the same thing. If that liquid ends up on unprotected skin, it can cause frost burns that are very painful and kill the affected tissue.
Jerl I spray pure butane on my hand while refilling pretty much everytime I refill. It just goes cold for a second and then it's gone, it doesn't leave a mark. I guess I must be superhuman.
I'm sorry but these lighters are called disposable for a reason, just buy a Zippo if you want a refillable lighter, which also come with a lifetime guarantee. Plus the lighter fluid you use to refill a Zippo is way cheaper than butane.
Ive been burning Naptha (camping fuel) in my zippos. Its way cheaper than zippo fluid. I pay 4 and changed for 32oz oz of naptha versus 2 dollars for 4oz of zippo fluid.
Joe Elmore don’t buy zippo fluid then. I just dunk my zippo in a glass if gasoline and the shit works fine. That’s what they did back in ‘Nam anways

I did this but I used one of the tips that came with my butane that was small enough to fit in the divet and big enough to cover the little keyhole slot. Just have to keep it flat when filling. The thing with the thumbtack is working so far. Or if you use metal tacks it even works as a pipe tamp.
To the people worried about the pressure pushing the pin out... a little math for ya. Butane pressure isn't as high as propane. It depends on temperature. It only starts to pressurize above about 30° F. and @ 110° F it gets up to around 50psi. Now a push pin has a diameter of .045". so it has a cross sectional area of .00159 inches. now multiply that by 50psi. and you get .0795lbs. of actual pressure exerted on the pin trying to eject it out. that is 1.272 oz. or 36 grams. so, not much force. about the weight of 5 nickles. And keep in mind that is at 110° F, it would be lower at lower temps. Also if you took a dremel with a small grinder bit and ground the pin down flush (carefully as to not get it heated up) and pushed it just below the surface, it would likely never come out since the plastic would shrink down a tiny bit behind it. Btw, I just figured this out because I was curious myself and I thought someone else may have been, so I posted it. I use a zippo.
+Chris Hoesing Zippos are the best,
+Дым Болин refillable butane jet lighters are the best
I would do this in a pinch
Sir, this video is timeless. Its 2am, need a toke and i was trying to do exactly this. Thank you!
Sounds like you need na/ rehab
@@calebpettifer Nah, I just needed a light homes
@@calebpettifer if I had stolen from everyone I know, pawned my stuff and sold my girlfriend then yes, rehab.
@@samuelmmmk181 if you need to get high so bad at 2am that you need to make a mobile IED to light up then you probably have a problem
I’m so glad you have a brown bic! That was my inspiration for refilling them!
this is dangerous that tac wont stay under pressure long, you're gonna have it close to your face while lighting it and the pin will pop letting all the butane out, incinerating your face or your hand or what have you....
😯 🔥 💥 😭
Lol
Sam Martino How do you know it wont stay? Did you try it or just guessing?
Sam Martino thats why u wrap it with tape
+Sam Martino WELL NOW IM NOT TRYING IT LOL
Thank you for making this video. I actually have another method that involves a little more work and it makes it so you can fill the Bic via a butane valve over and over without having to worry about covering holes but I don't want to divulge it here. Screw these douchebags bashing you for "trying to save a buck." That's just a bonus; every other decent person and I understand about saving lighters that we've used in the past that have some kind of meaning or that still have a lot of flint left. It's a waste not to try and re-use them.
Taking the top part of and fill it where it usually gets out
Its a waste of time and money fuck your sentimental ass
Damn right !!!
Hello great video... so I was lazy today on thanksgiving to go to store get grommets so I used a rubber and looped it till nozzle was like yours. And did the same with the pin added a seal Was thinking what if you put hot glue on the hole then when need to refill just squeeze in it so the pin isn’t needed.
Thanks for sharing, kinda always wondered how they did that. Thumbs up 👍
Sees all the things I need:I think I’ll just buy a new one
Damn, now that I seen this I’m about to use a lighter from 2013 lol
Yeah I been trying to look for that video where someone cut end of a pen for a nozzle put it in a big butane or propane canister a Colemans and transfed gas to a torche but thing I'm having problem with is the other part you put in first. Like the rubber part cause pen end is perfect fit for torch but it needs to squeeze into another part that I think completely covers canister hole so no gas really escapes and goes in smoothly. Any body know what or the video I'm taking about?
improvement idea, * if you have a rotary tool (Dremel,Proxxon,Noname copies) you can reduce the height of that needle pin even further with the pink grinding stone tool. * Alternative is there are pink grinding stones for hand drills too (>2-5$) * another idea: an angle grinder does the same job but needs steady hands (be careful). btw lol for all the people who are ignorant why this video might be helpful (resons i found for doing this mod: 1. Stores are Closed (Weekend,Night,Holidays) 2. Store to far away. 3. you need the lighter right now 4. rare limited edition lighter 5. you just want to do some hacking for the fun/ gain some knowledge
i save every empty bic for the last year....thank yooou!
because Bic lighters are super expensive...
Some lighters have stories dude or memories people like to keep shit like that around
uuuu 50 cents is expensive.
Good deal dude. Figured it had to be possible. Thanks for showing the way!
I was wondering if you can use Blu Tac to reseal it instead of reusing the pin. I felt it was much more sealant. Also.might be able to use Blu Tac instead of rubber at the top of the nozzle of gas can
You sound just like Chris Fix
If you have to go to home depot to buy materials, why not just buy a new pack of lighters?
yeah but the thing is you only need to buy the little rubber things once, and a can of butane will last a looonnnngg time
Grizz Ly until the flint runs out....
Hot glue No rubbers needed
@Dion Diova well. I don't have 50 billion fucking lighters im tryna refill so why would I need to "buy sticks of glue all the time?" Not sure what fucked off position your life is in... But the only time I need to do this with lighters is when I can't get to the store to buy a new one or something. And hot glue is something me and alot Of ppl have lying around........... I could refill 1000 bics and still not even be close to running out of 12 inch glue sticks 💁 But you do you and fill all the bics in the world with your rubbers I've tried both ways. Hot glue works better.
Damn. He's just tryna give ppl some education on turning a greedy Bic into a refillable.... So much hatin. I dont get it.
Thank you, good general idea that can be refined as you have more choice of materials. Congrats.
Omg thank you for not filing it here. I have a major audio thing against the sound of filing.. much respect bro ❤
I usually find bic lighters in the washing machine.
+Sam Maghsoodloo You should include that putting a dab of glue around the base to seal it in is highly recommended. You do NOT want to leave this in your car and have that bad-boy spit out the tack!
I agree but that would mean you can only refill it once cause of the glue.
Ash The Mohican scrape it off with a piece of plastic....
hot glue removes easily. if you used superglue or epoxy it'd be a different story.
Just what I was looking for thank you!
How would you go about refilling it with something other than butane?
Better to do this outside and don't light the bic right after you refilled it, because there's probably excess butane roaming in the air that could ignite.
refill so you don't have to buy so many lighter
this is the most useful video on the internet. well done, thank you :D
Thanks for passing on the knowledge..legit worked 👍
