**NEW** TAKOM TIGER 1 (late) 1/35 - Full inbox and build review - SO MANY OPTIONS!

I’ve never considered myself a tiger guy, but when I saw the announcement that Takom were releasing 3 x Tigers I was a little excited. I’d built tigers in smaller scales but never in my preferred scale of 1/35. I loved every part of the Hetzer Takom release last year and if that was anything to go by then it would be the perfect opportunity to build my first 35th scale Tiger 1.
By now You’ve probably all seen the images of the beautifully rendered and moulded parts in these kits. The level of detail and the natural looking organic shapes in the Zimmerit look absolutely stunning. The kits come with link and length tracks that look lovely, even if the guide horns come as separate parts. They also come with a small amount of etch as well as a metal barrel.
But inbox reviews and studio generated pictures can never truly tell you what the model is like, so today I am going to take you through the build phase of this kit. I’m going to try and highlight some of the optional parts and share the information I have as to when you might want to use them.

  • The more choices the merrier. I never can understand anyone bitching about model kits. No one is forcing anyone to buy a kit . .and other companies models don't sell takom kits. It's logical for Takom after king tigers and Panthers. And you are spot on when it comes to versions

    • Hey Will. well said! Blows me away when the chorus line starts to complain about subject, scale, version etc etc. I’m grateful we are getting new tooled kits and getting all these choices within our hobby! Thanks for sharing your thoughts 🫡🙏😎

    • I never understood it either. When these were announced a discord server I’m in people were complaining. Yes, the market is saturated with Tigers and P-51’s. However some of those kits are from ‘67, ‘73, ‘82, ‘97… hell even kits designed in ‘06 or ‘15 can show their age. Technology and tooling is constantly improving. I’m all for new tools of things. I’d like lesser stuff too, but what sells more and attracts more people to the hobby? A tiger 1 or Mustang or some obscure variant of a limited produced vehicle only real history nerds have heard of? How many people really know about a Duplex drive Sherman? Or an M4 “Jumbo” or ME-410?

    • How expensive is it to get into a hobby like this? This tank for example.

      @lyad3618@lyad36182 ай бұрын
    • @@lyad3618 as expensive as you want it to be really. If you’re not looking to spend much money on kits or materials then you could grab a starter kit. It comes with paint and a simple kit. Some kits come with colored plastic too so you could just build it as is. The deeper you dive into the hobby the more materials and kits you collect and thus end up spending a lot in the process. Again it’s whatever you want out of the hobby. It is nice when you complete a kit. I’ve only completed 4 since I started lol

    • Hey! sorry I missed this comment - Complex question... A kit like this would be around $70AUD (give or take) - but you could pick up a kit for a lot less than that for your first attempt. A basic set of tools might be $20 AUD... Paints would be required after that...but maybe start with the build and see how you enjoy that part. It really is such an amazing hobby, so Id encourage you to give it a try if you are even slightly interested - thanks for connecting

    • I'm sure the model companies have thought about that, but unfortunately Kurt Knispel's service is poorly documented. He didn't write a book and the most important book about him (Kurowski) is not entirely trustworthy. (Some actual tankers that were interviewed, complained that the author put words in their mouths.) So it's not easy to name the "Kurt Knispel Tiger", and in fact, because he was a gunner in 1943 rather than a commander, he was probably switched between several Tigers. Nevertheless, there IS one very credible account by a Tiger commander of a particular 1943 battle where Knispel was his gunner. That Tiger is firmly associated with the name Kurt Knispel, and I have done the research to depict it.

I also saw the Asuka Sherman 1C for 54.00 with free shipping. But I have to agree, the Takom Hetzers were under 50.00 with interior, and I got all three Takom Tiger 1's for 51.00 each shipped. I hope Takom does a range of M4's, and T-34's as well. With any luck Meng will expand their M4 line.

      @silvestersze9968@silvestersze9968Ай бұрын
    • Well.. no doubting Tamiya are the benchmark with ease of build and engineering... but their range of subjects only spans so far. Takom and Meng are usually pretty predictable.. but Takom can suffer from over engineering sometimes. My advice would be to do a quick google search of the kit you are considering and see what others are saying about it. That will give you a reasonable feel for the complexity of the kit. KZhead is always good too if you can find a build video. Hope that helps. 🤗

  • The best Takom review (build review!) seen- the link in link tracks with guide-horns: to be candid, are the only thing throwing me from buying ANY of these Takom kits…although- watching you do the work, detailing and showing us the issues: how to resolve them, is encouraging… NOT having the ability to “easily”remove tracks for weathering, ditto the road wheels etc. for “fear” of breaking off guide horns, or bits of track- the hours needed to assemble the track (getting old, stiff fingered and eyes weaker) - taking away too much time from the rest of the build (and life)…. With the amazing mold technology available now- one would think that hell, why not Mold the tracks around the drives and returns- then fill in with length of track- or high tech band tracks with guide horns molded in (NOT like Dragons Magic Tracks!) - no worries about breaking bits when moving in display cases or to showings- something new. Spending time on details; is vital… as I micro drilled out the barrel of Tamiya ball mounted MG-34 on a Jadgpanther! Stunning MG-34s on that Takom! Cheers and a Good Night To All-

The Zimmerit is outstanding!!, easily the best I have seen from anyone. If I build one of these Takom Tigers I will go with Friulmodel tracks. I have never been disappointed with them. The assembly process for link & length, particularly the guide horns in this example, just doesn't seem like it's worth the effort. Anyway, overall this is an excellent kit with some helpful molding and design techniques that aid the modeller in the assembly process. Look forward to the next installment 👍

  • Clayton, thank you for an absolutely outstanding and thorough review and build. In less than 25 mins, you have done a brilliant job of detailing most of the major aspects and salient points of the Takom kit and key historical aspects to be aware of during the build, and it was also easy to watch. It is so refreshing to see someone who has done the research in preparation for their video, not only on the model kit, and its associated parts, instructions, and paint schemes, but also on the historical content and accuracy of the Takom kit. It is frustrating to see the amount of garbage content and reviews that exist on KZhead where the reviewer has done no preparation or research at all, including not even familiarising themselves with the build instructions, and constantly states having no idea what various parts are, let alone having any knowledge on the subject matter. As a case in point, I saw a recent review of an M4 Sherman kit depicting LTCOL Creighton 'Abe' Abrams' Thunderbolt VII tank on the box art and as one of the paint schemes and the content creator was totally ignorant to the historical significance of that particular tank. Suffice to say you have restored my faith in the fact that there is still quality modelling content out there by creators who actually know what they are talking about. I have built a number of Takom kits in both 1/35 and 1/16 scale and I have found them to be of excellent quality and value for money, though I would have to say they have lifted the bar again on the level of detail in these recent Tiger I kits. I placed my pre-order for the Tiger I Big Box Limited Edition as soon as it was available and it arrived a week ago. I have saved your video and will be using it for reference material during my build. Thank you again and keep up the excellent work with your videos. Oh, and do we need another Tiger I kit? Yes, we certainly need these three Takom kits to replace the many old and sub-standard kits currently on the market.

  • Awesome video and build!!!!! Have built a few TAKOM kits and have noticed that very same thing you pointed out from the first kit I build: extra sections in the instructions with no type of explanation as to what the "version" is to be called out. Figured that since most of their kits are the "2-in-1" stuff I'll build a little of both and add to vehicle - crews would be using whatever supply parts were on hand at the time whether said parts were of an earlier version or later version so it would probably be more historically "accurate" if the parts were intermixed some.

  • I bought the 3 kit box because it was a steal. Barely more expensive than a single MENG kit. A downside with Takom kits is their small instructions imo. It can be hard to determine how a part sits from the instructions. Another is the thick sprue gates connecting to the parts which were present in at least their earlier kits.

  • This looks like a lovely kit, and i have no objection to 'another tiger' but I can understand where the frustration comes from, my main area of interest is british armour and while there is a decent spread available its dwarfed by the shermans and germans and as I like to add figures to my builds because I love the sense of life and scale that they add, its really hard to find british tank crew figures in comparison to soviet ones, or especially american and german ones, but I'm happy for a release like this because these types of subjects are the big money makers so hopefully the manufacturers can make enough from these to release the odd slightly more niche offering, like a matilda 1 or a modern tooling for a CVRT in place of the now quite aged AFV Club offering, or any number of other vehicles! Plus the more well known vehicles are often what draw people in to the hobby in the forst place, and getting more people interested in modelling and hopefully the history behind whatever it is they choose to build is the most important thing!

  • Appreciate the in-depth review. I just finished a Tiger with full interior and I am looking forward to building these Tigers as well. One thing I did notice with this kit that varied from the RFM kit is the zimmerit shown on the upper glacis plate, the flat one between the front flaps. I noticed there is a museum Tiger that had the zimmerit reapplied and they applied zimmerit on that upper glacis. I scoured reference photos but couldn't find a single photo showing that zimmerit was applied there. Have you come across anything or did Takom make a mistake? I feel like the research is what makes Tigers so difficult to model because there is so little visual information available for all the variants, changes, etc.

    @relentlesstorm@relentlesstorm3 ай бұрын
    • I’ve been trying to find references on the tank I’m wanting to paint but keep coming up short. You can drive yourself crazy obsessing over details. It gets to a point where you just have to let it go and make peace with it. At the end of the day these things end up on our display shelf with us being the only ones that would know the difference between any of it. Did Takom get it wrong? No idea, but one thing I have learned over years of modelling armour is to never deal in absolutes, because these things saw so many updates and modifications. I think if something is plausible and you can’t find reference to counter it then it’s fair game. Not sure if that helps. Thanks again for connecting 🙏💪🍺

If I ever buy this kit I'll most likely get RFM plastic or T-Rex resin tracks along. As for subject... There are some Tigers of good quality - Dragon, RFM, Border Model, was this one necessary? No, but the zimmerit here looks really tasty. Still I'd rather see some good quality IS-2 or IS-3, as currently you can only have old Tamiya and Trumpeter kits. Of course I would prefer to get them from RFM, as they usually provide workable tracks ;)

  • Hi Clayton! Great video of this build as usual mate. When I returned to modelling a few years ago, the Tiger 1 from Tamiya was one of the first projects I tackled. I have built a couple since then from different manufacturers, but that first Tiger I built takes pride of place in the display cabinet. It is not as well built, or painted and weathered as well as later builds, but for some reason it represents my satisfaction with building models again after so many years absent from the hobby. With regards the Takom Tigers, I will be looking to build all three when I can get my hands on them. I love the Takom brand, and have now completed quite a few of their German armour kits. Yes, they can be frustrating at times, but overall they have few fit issues, and the crisp detail in the moulding is fantastic. Really looking forward to the painting and weathering episode on this big cat. Cheers for now mate!

  • I am currently building up the Takom Mid version and there are some real problems with the fit of the road wheels. They don't connect properly and the space is too narrow for the next set of wheels to fit into. The tracks are also painful with 6 connection points to sand including the guide horns (which are too thin). I really don't understand how a company that can go to such great lengths achieving amazing renderings can shit the bed on a simple item like roadwheel connections and tracks.

    • @@workbenchhobbies4316 The worse one for me was the 1/16 scale Das Werk Stug IIIg. Which is basically Takom plastic and instructions. The kit featured detailed interior of the fighting compartment, with a detailed gun breach etc, radios and rear bulkhead. Yet there was no guide whatsoever on what colours to paint it all. I ended up downloading the instructions for a 1/35 Mini Art Stug kit with full interior. That told me all the colours I needed. @BuggzZ1823@BuggzZ18232 ай бұрын
    • That’s a pretty complex question because it really depends on your expectations and skill set. In reality these schemes would have all been sprayed, so if you wanted to replicate the soft edges of the camo then that would be tough to replicate with a brush. But modelling is a journey, so if all you have is the means to brush paint then don’t let that get in the way of you enjoying the kit. Build for yourself and look to learn something new with each build and you can’t go wrong. Good luck 🤞 🍺🙏
