Great job HC, I've got one little tip for the good people out here, buy some food grade silicone grease ( $1 for a 1/2 oz container at my local hardware store) and coat the rubber gaskets on the filter and spout, a little goes a long way. This prevents leaks and helps the gaskets to remain supple and reusable.🙂
Where did you buy the spirits & filters. I need to get some. Thank you so much.
Thank you for sharing that tip!
Use castor oil - totally safe ❤.
Excellent advice!
OMG! An inexpensive Berkey Filter with handles! You are a genius!
I know the berkey filters say to put food coloring in the top tank when you first install new filters to make sure it isn't leaking. The water at the bottom should be clear. A great way to make sure you don't have any contaminated water leaking into the bottom chamber.
Thanks!!!
This is great! I wanted to get a large Berkey but you can't buy them in CA. I don't know why. We are so screwed in CA!
@@kathleenoleary7727 You should probably move it's not going to get any better.
@@kathleenoleary7727 can you buy just the berkey filters and make your own like this?

For pond or river water: Pre filter with an old t shirt then filter the water and then boil for 5 to 10 minutes.
Girlfriend, I was just thinking about doing this myself! I want a Berkey but just can't afford it right now. Thanks for doing the research and sharing!
I bought my Berkey used for 100$ ... on market place...
@@michaela723 "Berkley ?" Is that Berkey knockoff ?
@@JuliaSugarbaker no mine is a real one ....sorry my spelling was a nockoff 😂😂

Just a tip for drilling into stainless. Go SLOW and apply a good amount of pressure. If you go too fast it overheats your bit and ruins it. Also if using a step drill, drill the final step from the opposite side to help de-bur the hole.
Both great solid tips! Thanks
Thank you. What drill do you recommend? I ask as I bought some step drills but they would not cut through the stainless steel.
@@leopardwoman38 I had decent luck with the cheap harbor freight step bits. They’re going to get ruined by the stainless steel so go slow and consider them disposable. Also if you have gone wild and overheated the hole you’re trying to drill, it will have become extremely hard to continue drilling.
@@jpjp3873 Thank you! I bought mine from Amazon and they didn’t even make a mark on the pans. They were cheap junk. I will check Harbor Freight. Thanks for the tip.
@@leopardwoman38 Try starting a hole with a regular small bit. The step bits don’t like to start themselves.
Thankyou honey. You just showed alot of mothers and fathers how to keep their families safe and healthy.
Well it looks like you sold out Amazon on the ceramic domes. They promise to be back in stock soon. I went to Walmart got my pots, ordered the parts from Amazon and I already have the drill! Wouldn't it be great if the people in Flint Michigan that have notoriously bad water were able to share this video? I wonder who could coordinate. Maybe people could gift a kit to churches and the church folks could put them together and hand them out around the upcoming holidays. 🙏🙏
Great idea 💡
Better yet, let the water supply Co. Give out the filters
I believe Zero Water has given a bunch of pitchers and filters to Flint residents. I could be wrong but I have seen things about them donating.
Or East Palestine, OH
Flint water is poisoned with lead and heavy metal...filtration is not the resolution.😮
I love that you give us an alternative to the expensive Berkeys and others....this awesome!
This has got to be one of the most practical do it yourself I have seen in a long time. Great job!
This works well. We put city tap water through our ceramic filter, and the filter does collect a brown layer after a while. You can carefully wipe that off with a soft cloth, but it will eventually need replacing. This shows how murky even supposedly-clean tap water can be.
Do the ceramic filters filter out contaminants like bacteria, molds, spores, etc?
@@juliabrown5948 they are supposed to.. read the limits on each filter
Wipe the buckets or pot,WITH C.,LR. ,AND REMEMBER TO WASH MANY TIMES.IF USING STAINLESS STEEL. DON'T USE IT. JUST WIPE AROUND WITH STRONG DETERGENT.
@@mathiasniemeier4359 so you mean prior to using it and for cleaning especially the top pan and bottom with spout?
Yeah, my tap water takes awhile to settle
I’ve watched several videos on how to make a DIY water filter. This by far is the easiest, and it looks just dandy, the stainless steel makes it stand out as some thing a little bit more pleasing than a plastic bucket. And it’s cheaper! Thank you
Sas one using a plastic bucket, a tap inserted & 2 unglazed ceramic pots
P.S. the 2nd ceramic pot was just to raise the container enough so it makes dispensing easier.
GREAT IDEA!!!! My husband is going to make this TOMORROW! You're so clever and handy too. THANK YOU JINNE

@@trishameloling2367 You can do it!!!
I put one of these together about a year ago. I had such a hard time finding 16qt stock pots that were not part of a set. Walmart no longer sells the 16qt individually and the 16 is necessary to accommodate the black Berkey filters. So I ended up with a set of pots from Harbor freight and I used a turkey fryer vessel for the bottom tank since I got a good deal on it and it already has a spout installed.
Great idea too the spout part ..thanks!
How long are the berkey or pro one filters?
I like the stainless steel pots a whole bunch better than buckets, which I had planned to do! Just a note - Please make sure you have plenty of filters on hand as well as a spigot or two with the rubber washers as you could break one and then have nothing. With shipping problems out there, you don't want to be without. Thanks for sharing Jinne! Perfect timing 👌
Where do you get the filters? Thanks Vic
@@VWilt-so3ws Amazon.
buckets would sit down in the other bucket on bottom............these pots? If you accidentally bump the top one?? You'll have a mess.
@@3258pamela I just made this from the Walmart stainless steel pots. Two identical pots. The top pot sits down inside the lower pot by about an inch. I think you’d have to bump it pretty hard to create a problem. Seems pretty solid.
We went to test our 5 gallon bucket version and filter worked well but water wasn’t coming in the bucket! The bucket had a crack. I ordered these metal pots and found your post and we are one step closer to water filtration! Thank you!
A very attractive alternative to the Berkey in deed. One caution though. I bought an adorable stainless steel pot and after several uses, I notice that its lid began to rust. Beware of cheap product.
THANK YOU sooo much!! I will be making this wonderful Berkey knockoff this weekend . You have saved a lot of preppers hundreds of dollars that we can put elsewhere for the future. You are a lifesaver. The only thing I will add to this unit will be a terracotta saucer upside down underneath to boost off the counter. Just put hot glue around the rims(top and bottom)of the saucer, to stop shifting and sliding on counter.
You could also put it on a plant stand.
I would make a stand high enough to get a jug underneath the spigot so you can push the whole thing back on the counter and leave room for other things like doing baking or serving meals onto plates. Edit:- Ooops, as long as you have space below upper cupboards or there are none, lol.
I have a berkey and didn't want to take up counter space. I got a small rolling cart from Amazon with space under it for my trash. Park it at the end of a counter and I just roll the whole thing to the sink and use the hose gizmo to fill'er up. Love this idea as the berkey filters are super expensive and I only have one set left. Very clever and so useful.
On a side note, in case you can't put one of these together in time, you CAN filter water through a clean terra cotta pot if you had to. Terra Cotta makes an excellent filter in a pinch. There are a few YT videos on how to do this.
Great idea. Love a woman who knows tools. Self sustained.
One thing to keep in mind is what your water source will be. All of the ceramic filters I've researched state that they are not for use with "microbially unsafe water". So they are intended for water that is already "safe" but just wanting to filter out sediment or hard water minerals. In a SHTF situation, if the water you're starting with is at all questionable, you'll want to take additional steps to kill microbes (boiling/bleach, etc) before running it through the ceramic filter. But if you're using bleach to make the water safe first, then the ceramic filter would work well to remove the bleach taste. If you have any concerns about chemical contamination, then a different type of filter would be a better choice, but you can still go with the DIY setup to lower costs. I love the 2 stainless pots idea since they look nicer than the buckets, plus, 2 of the 5gal buckets would be quite tall stacked on a countertop. The 2 pots are a much more manageable size!
Can you please tell me if the layers charcoal/ sand pea gravel/ version filters out biological stuff and chemical stuff?
@@rwind656 I don't have that information. I would highly recommend boiling first if using that method.
Berkeys definitely can filter out every pathogen
Ceramic filters do not take out hard water minerals. As the inside of my Berkey can attest to. Clean your filters a bit more often and not with vinegar. Use the vinegar on the spigot and container.
@@twillbdone3273 You can use a bit of baking soda & you will not get the buildup of hard-water deposits. I use 1/4c of baking soda in the toilet tank every time I scrub the toilet- it WORKS! I tested it once & went nearly 3 weeks without cleaning it (disgusting right?) it still looked clean & fresh but I couldn't let it go another day LOL. I typically do weekly! I wouldn't think a small amount would alter flavor & it will alkalize the water. Will have to test it when I make mine
I found this tip in the comments of another similar bucket filtration system and thought it might be useful to anyone who is having a slow rate of filtration: "I would like to bring an engineering problem to your attention that will fix flow rate and also the filtration rate. The bottom container when starting has only air in it. As it fills with water, the air is pushed upwards and has only one area to escape from, and that is back through the two water filters. The filters are not able to displace the air in proportion to the water flow out of them, and this causes the filters to slow down, and eventually stop. What needs to be done is another hole needs to be put in the system, and a food-grade safe ventilation tube needs to be installed. It would need to have a threaded system similar to the filters, and a clear tube that would reach about 1 1/2" short of the top of the water chamber when filled. This will allow air to vent from the bottom chamber receiving water to the top chamber losing water, which would regulate it. Your filtration rate would increase to its maximum capacity, and the dispensing rate would be equalized by the infusion of air from the top, preventing vapor lock." Again, if anyone has this type of problem, hopefully, this modification will help....
Where does one obtain a "food grade safe ventilation tube"?
Couldn't one just drill a small hole near the top of the bottom vessel to prevent air lock? As long as the filtered water level doesn't reach the hole, it shouldn't leak. ( Or at least that's what my small brain seems to think!)
More filters works too. Saw abig family do it with 4 so it could keep up better. Icr the channel or the rate, but he said they have been using this "system" for years , for off grid living, and so far that was the best way they found. ? Just an added note. :) tyfs
my Berkey has a small 'clip" that goes on the rim of the bottom chamber. I am thinking that a couple bobby pins clipped over the edge would be worth a try to prevent airlock. or some similar 'clip'. it doesnt need to create a very big space for the air to escape.
This is a great idea. The stainless steel looks so much better sitting on the counter than plastic buckets. Thanks for showing us how to do this.
Ok...this is the BEST DIY easy-to-do water filtration system I've seen so far. Anyone can put whatever filter they choose 😄
That was the best homemade water video! Good advice to strain swampy water first and always boil for 10 minutes before running through the filter. Thank you!
Lead gets stronger if you boil water.
Looks great to me! I made one using 5-gallon food grade buckets, but this is a nice set up for your kitchen! Thank you, Jenni!!❤️❤️❤️
Don’t know how I missed this till now that’s the best and cheapest one I’ve seen yet and is so doable thanks again for awesome information ❤❤❤
I'm impressed ! I've owed a berkey for years !!! You made one ! I moved my filters to the ones your using too.,because I couldn't afford the 79.99 price of a filter anymore. If you used a three year system, which you could with the way you made this, you could put a charcoal filter in a middle pan for extra taste and filtering too ! Wow, I'm impressed ! Mine was $200. Many years ago ! Thank you for sharing this, my friends are gonna love this too ! 🥰
Thank you for the middle pan tip.
Pre-filter and boiling are always a plus!
If you remove the handle on the lower lid, and drill through the top pan to align it, then the top pan will be more stable. Install the filter through the top pan and the bottom lid.
Great idea!
Darn good idea..thanks for sharing my next unit will do exactly that
My husband purchased a bunch of those filters and I thought he was crazy. No so much now. I'm gonna make this water filter. Thanks for sharing the process.
Just FYI, There will be some water in your water heater, so if you have 30 or 50 gal water hearer there is some storage there. Just be empty into containers.
Thanks for making this video! I'm a single mom and I can't afford a Berkey water filter system. So now I just need to get a ceramic filter, a spicot, 2 buckets, and a drill bit. Thanks soooo much! This is going to save me a few hundred dollars!!!!😁😍😁😍😁😍
We just bought these pots for a filter system thank you! So much easier than we thought

This is fantastic! Thank you so much for showing us how easy this can be.
Great video Jenni. You make it so easy to make.
We mimicked this build exactly except my husband added screws through the pot even with the handles and now the top pot sits on them instead of nesting in the bottom pot. It makes lifting the top pot so much easier to evaluate your water supply.
Just wanted to say thank you or this video. I wanted a Berkey so bad, but couldn't afford it. I used the Berkey replacement filters in stead of the ceramic ones. It works great! So happy with the outcome and I am normally a DIY disaster! Love the channel and all your videos. Keep on keeping on!

Thank you for showing this and how to do it. Catching up as the household has been sick, just starting to feel better and behind on everything!!
I tried the stainless pots for this using Berkey filters. A problem I had was the rivets on the handles reacted when under water. So long as you keep the water level below the rivets you’ll be fine. Also, drilling and cutting the stainless is not easy. Getting the right bit is super important.
That's been our problem too. We're going to put some Gorilla Glue Epoxy on them because that's apparently food grade once cured.
What a great idea. As always I really appreciate the time and effort you put into your content. God Bless.

The fabric from old fashioned feather pillows (think it's called ducking or ticking) that kept the feathers inside works great for pre-filtering murky water if you're in a rush, otherwise leave it for 30-60 minutes and it'll settle to the bottom and you can syphon off from the top like folks home brewing beer do 😁
What about cheese cloth?
